Quantitative analyses of adiposity dynamics in zebrafish.

Adipose tissues often exhibit subtle, quantitative differences between individuals, leading to a graded series of adiposity phenotypes at the population level. Robust, quantitative analyses are vital for studying these differences. In this Commentary we highlight two articles from our lab that employ sensitive new methods in zebrafish capable of delineating complex and quantitative adiposity phenotypes. In the first article, we utilized in vivo imaging to systematically quantify zebrafish adipose tissues. We identified 34 regionally distinct zebrafish adipose tissues and developed statistical

Adiposity and different types of screen time.

OBJECTIVE: Few prospective studies have examined separate forms of screen time in relation to adiposity. Our objective was to assess independent relations of television, electronic games (video/computer), and digital versatile disc (DVD)/videos and total screen time with change in adolescent BMI. METHODS: Using data from the 2004, 2006, and 2008 waves of the ongoing Growing up Today Study II, we assessed baseline and 2-year change in reported screen time in relation to concurrent change in BMI among 4287 girls and 3505 boys aged 9 to 16 years in 2004. Gender-specific models adjusted for previ

Maternal visceral adiposity by consistency of lactation.

The purpose of this study was to examine the assocation between lactation and maternal visceral adiposity among US women who were on average 7 years postpartum. This cross-sectional analysis included 89 women who gave birth between 1997 and 2002, who did not have preeclampsia, prepregnancy hypertension or prepregnancy diabetes, and enrolled in The Women and Infant Study of Healthy Hearts (WISH). Computed tomography was used to assess abdominal adiposity. History of lactation was self-reported. Visceral adiposity was greater by 36.96 cm(2) (95% CI: 20.92,53.01) among mothers who never breastfed

Inflammation in depression: is adiposity a cause?

Mounting evidence indicates that inflammation may play a significant role in the development of depression. Patients with depression exhibit increased inflammatory markers, and administration of cytokines and other inflammatory stimuli can induce depressive symptoms. Mechanisms by which cytokines access the brain and influence neurotransmitter systems relevant to depression have also been described, as have preliminary findings indicating that antagonizing inflammatory pathways may improve depressive symptoms. One primary source of inflammation in depression appears to be adiposity. Adipose ti

Adiposity-independent sympathetic activity in black men.

Obesity is thought to lead to sympathetic overactivity as a compensatory adjustment to weight gain. However, most of the experimental support for the hypothesis has been derived from white cohorts. Our previous study in blacks indicated that sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) is closely correlated with body mass index only in women, whereas, in black men, SNA is elevated and dissociated from adiposity (Abate et al., Hypertension 38: 379-383, 2001). To further determine whether total and regional adiposity are determinants of SNA in blacks, we performed a prospective weight loss study in 12 normo

Central adiposity and risk of Barrett's esophagus.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Aside from chronic reflux, the etiology of Barrett's esophagus (BE) remains largely unknown. This case-control study investigated body mass index (BMI), central adiposity, and cigarette smoking and risk of BE. METHODS: Washington residents newly diagnosed with specialized intestinal metaplasia on at least 1 of 4 esophageal biopsy specimens taken at community gastroenterology clinics (cases [n = 193]) were compared with matched population controls (n = 211). Case subgroups included those with any visible columnar epithelium (visible BE) and those with at least 2 cm of colu

Abdominal adiposity and the polycystic ovary syndrome.

Abdominal adiposity, overweightness and obesity are frequently present in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). A large body of evidence suggests that abdominal adiposity and the resulting insulin resistance contribute to ovarian and, possibly, adrenal hyperandrogenism. However, androgen excess itself might also contribute to abdominal fat deposition in hyperandrogenic women. Recent genomic and proteomic analyses of visceral fat from PCOS patients have detected differences in gene expression and protein content compared with those of non-hyperandrogenic women. Here we review the exis

Visceral Adiposity Index in Coronary Artery Ectasia.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery ectasia (CAE) describes abnormal widening of the epicardial coronary arteries, generally attributed to dysregulated remodeling of the arterial wall. Combining body composition and lipid parameters, the visceral adiposity index (VAI) provides an indirect reflection of dysfunctional adipose tissue and related metabolic risk. The analysis specifically evaluated differences in VAI between patients with isolated CAE and those with unremarkable coronary angiograms, as well as the independent association between VAI and CAE. METHODS: Records of adults who underwent corona

Estimating Visceral Adiposity From Wrist-Worn Accelerometry.

Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is a key marker of both metabolic health and habitual physical activity (PA). Excess VAT is highly correlated with type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. The mechanistic basis for this pathophysiology relates to overloading the liver with fatty acids. VAT is also a highly labile fat depot, with increased turnover stimulated by catecholamines during exercise. VAT can be measured with sophisticated imaging technologies, but can also be inferred directly from PA. We tested this relationship using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 20

Interactions between PTH and adiposity: appetizing possibilities.

Although parathyroid hormone (PTH) is best known for its role as a regulator of skeletal remodelling and calcium homeostasis, more recent evidence supports a role for it in energy metabolism and other non-classical targets. In this report, we summarize evidence for an effect of PTH on adipocytes. This review is based upon all peer-reviewed papers, published in the English language with PubMed as the primary search engine. Recent preclinical studies have documented an effect of PTH to stimulate lipolysis in both adipocytes and liver cells and to cause browning of adipocytes. PTH also reduces bo

Adiposity and Cardiac Defects: Pathophysiology and Etiology.

The worldwide obesity epidemic is well known, with most countries experiencing rises in obesity incidence since the 1980s. Obesity directly contributes to the occurrence of cardiovascular risk factors such as dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and sleep problems. Obesity, in addition to other cardiovascular risk factors, contributes to the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cardiovascular disease mortality. Recent research suggests that abdominal obesity, as measured by waist circumference, is a risk factor for CVD that is independent of body mass index. As adipose tissu

BACKGROUND: Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is inversely associated with metabolic diseases and adiposity markers. AIM: To assess the association of CRF with body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and obesity in a representative sample of the Chilean population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data from 5,958 participants in the Chilean National Health Survey 2016-1027 aged 15 years or above were analyzed. CRF was estimated by an equation that included sociodemographic, anthropometric and health-related data and expressed in metabolic equivalent units (METs). The association between CRF and a

Bone Marrow Adiposity: Basic and Clinical Implications.

The presence of adipocytes in mammalian bone marrow (BM) has been recognized histologically for decades, yet, until recently, these cells have received little attention from the research community. Advancements in mouse transgenics and imaging methods, particularly in the last 10 years, have permitted more detailed examinations of marrow adipocytes than ever before and yielded data that show these cells are critical regulators of the BM microenvironment and whole-body metabolism. Indeed, marrow adipocytes are anatomically and functionally separate from brown, beige, and classic white adipocyte

Effects of amylin on eating and adiposity.

Amylin's best investigated function is to reduce eating via a meal size effect by promoting meal-ending satiation. This effect seems to depend on an activation of specific area postrema neurons. Brain areas that convey the neural signal to the forebrain include the nucleus of the solitary tract and the lateral parabrachial nucleus. Acute application of amylin modulates the activity of hypothalamic areas involved in the control of eating, namely, the lateral hypothalamic area and possibly the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus. Amylin also interacts with other satiating signals, such as cholecys

Left atrial epicardial adiposity and atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) has been linked to inflammatory factors and obesity. Epicardial fat is a source of several inflammatory mediators related to the development of coronary artery disease. We hypothesized that periatrial fat may have a similar role in the development of AF. METHODS AND RESULTS: Left atrium (LA) epicardial fat pad thickness was measured in consecutive cardiac CT angiograms performed for coronary artery disease or AF. Patients were grouped by AF burden: no (n=73), paroxysmal (n=60), or persistent (n=36) AF. In a short-axis view at the mid LA, periatrial epicard

Impact of increasing adiposity in hyperlipidemic children.

Despite lifestyle management, children with high-risk hyperlipidemias may become overweight, and this may further adversely impact their lipid profile. Regression analysis was used to determine changes over time in adiposity and their association with lipid profiles and other risk factors for hyperlipidemic children followed in a lipid disorder clinic. 184 patients were included. Median age at presentation was 7 years (2-17 years), and median duration of follow-up was 9 years (5-20 years). Mean initial total cholesterol was 6.9+/-1.6 mmol/L, low-density lipoproteins were 5.2+/-1.7 mmol/L, high
