Use of Dexmedetomidine as an Adjuvant in Spinal Anesthesia in Patients With Femoral Fracture Affected by Moderate Aortic Stenosis: A Case Series.

The anaesthesiological management of femoral fracture in the frail patient still represents a challenge for the anaesthetist and his team. For decades, the most frequently used anaesthesiological approach in these cases has been spinal anaesthesia. In recent years, the progression of pharmacology and anaesthesiological techniques has meant that this technique can be adopted in situations where general anaesthesia was previously preferred, particularly in clinical scenarios requiring less haemodynamic impact, such as in patients with aortic valve stenosis. In this case series, we consider how a

Comparison of intraoperative blood loss during spinal surgery using either remifentanil or fentanyl as an adjuvant to general anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Remifentanil enhances intraoperative hemodynamic stability, suggesting that it may decrease intraoperative blood loss when included as an adjuvant to general anesthesia. This retrospective study compared intraoperative blood loss during spinal surgery in patients administered either remifentanil or fentanyl as an opioid adjuvant. METHODS: We reviewed clinical and surgical data from 64 consecutive laminoplasty or laminectomy patients treated at National Hospital Organization Zentsuji Hospital between April 2010 and March 2011. Patients received either remifentanil (n = 35) or fenta

Comparison of Different Doses of Dexmedetomidine as Adjuvant for Infraumbilical Surgery in Patients Receiving Bupivacaine Spinal Anesthesia: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Infraumbilical surgery today is done preferentially under subarachnoid block. The relatively short duration of analgesia is a limiting factor which is overcome by adding an adjuvant to intrathecal bupivacaine. We aimed to determine optimum dose of intrathecal dexmedetomidine as adjuvant to 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine in infraumbilical surgery. METHODS: A parallel group, double blind, randomized controlled trial was done with 105 adult patients posted for infraumbilical surgery under subarachnoid block. All subjects received 3.0 mL (15.0 mg) of 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine. Groups D

Association Between Burst-Suppression Latency and Burst-Suppression Ratio Under Isoflurane or Adjuvant Drugs With Isoflurane Anesthesia in Mice.

The same doses of anesthesia may yield varying depths of anesthesia in different patients. Clinical studies have revealed a possible causal relationship between deep anesthesia and negative short- and long-term patient outcomes. However, a reliable index and method of the clinical monitoring of deep anesthesia and detecting latency remain lacking. As burst-suppression is a characteristic phenomenon of deep anesthesia, the present study investigated the relationship between burst-suppression latency (BSL) and the subsequent burst-suppression ratio (BSR) to find an improved detection for the ons

A double-blinded randomized control trial to compare the duration of analgesia using morphine, clonidine, or dexmedetomidine as adjuvants to ropivacaine in caudal anesthesia in children undergoing infraumbilical surgeries.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Adjuvants added to the caudal block prolong the duration of analgesia. In a developing country with economic constraints, the choice of an adjuvant will be the medication with a longer duration of analgesia, a favorable side-effect profile, and the least expensive option. We wished to study the duration of postoperative analgesia afforded by three adjuvants: morphine, clonidine, and dexmedetomidine, at doses wherein minimal or nil adverse effects would be attributed to the adjuvant. The primary objective of the current study is to compare the duration of postoperative anal

The Efficacy and Safety of the Novel Peripheral Analgesic Isovaline as an Adjuvant to Propofol for General Anesthesia and Conscious Sedation: A Proof-of-Principle Study in Mice.

BACKGROUND: The combination of propofol and an opioid analgesic is widely used for procedural sedation, as well as total IV anesthesia. However, opioids produce respiratory depression, a primary cause of death due to these agents. We recently reported on the antinociceptive actions of isovaline, a small nonbiogenic amino acid that does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier and acts on peripheral γ-aminobutyric acid type B receptors. Here, we explored the possibility that isovaline may be an effective and safe alternative to opioids as an adjunct to propofol for producing anesthesia. METHO

Analgesic Effectiveness of Magnesium Sulfate as an Adjuvant to Local Anesthesia in Symptomatic Irreversible Pulpitis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

The inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) is the most commonly used method for inducing pulpal anesthesia in patients with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis (SIP). Magnesium sulfate has been reported to increase the anesthetic effectiveness for endodontic procedures. Whether the adjuvant use of magnesium sulfate with IANB is effective in SIP patients remains uncertain. We performed an electronic search on PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science (WOS), and Cochrane CENTRAL from inception to September 2025 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the adjuvant use of magnesium sulfate with IANB an

Recombinant activated factor VII as a promising adjuvant therapy for postpartum hemorrhage in the practice of obstetric anesthesia: experience from a university hospital in Taiwan.

Massive postpartum hemorrhage is one of the major complications in the peripartum period. In some critical cases, hemostasis is hard to achieve even after a hysterectomy has been performed. Recombinant activated factor VII has been reported as a promising adjuvant therapy for obstetric hemorrhage, although it remains unlicensed for this indication. Eight cases receiving recombinant activated factor VII in postpartum hemorrhage refractory to the conventional therapy in a Taiwanese hospital were analyzed retrospectively. A good response, defined as bleeding control in 15 min, was achieved in six

Investigating the Efficacy of Dexmedetomidine as an Adjuvant to Local Anesthesia in Brachial Plexus Block: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of 18 Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dexmedetomidine has been thought to be an effective adjuvant to local anesthetics in brachial plexus blockade. We sought to clarify the uncertainty that still exists as to its true efficacy. METHODS: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was conducted to assess the ability of dexmedetomidine to prolong the duration and hasten the onset of motor and sensory blockade when used as an adjuvant to local anesthesia for brachial plexus blockade versus using local anesthesia alone (control). A search strategy was created to identify eligible articles in MEDLINE, E

Comparative Study to Evaluate the Efficacy of Dexmedetomidine and Magnesium Sulfate as Adjuvants to 0.5% of Hyperbaric Bupivacaine in Patient Undergoing Abdominal Hysterectomy by Spinal Anesthesia: A Randomized, Double-blind Study.

OBJECTIVE: Abdominal hysterectomy is a common gynecological procedure. While spinal anesthesia offers pain relief, its short analgesic effect is limiting. In this context, there are not many research that examined magnesium sulfate, dexmedetomidine, and 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine. Our research addresses this gap as "Comparing Dexmedetomidine and Magnesium Sulfate as Adjuvants to Hyperbaric Bupivacaine for Abdominal Hysterectomy". METHODS: Ninety patients with the American Society of Anesthesiologists Classification I and II, aged 30-60, planned for abdominal hysterectomy were randomized to e
