OBJECTIVES: Aerococcus spp are Gram-positive cocci increasingly recognized as uropathogens. The Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute recently published specific breakpoints for Aerococcus spp (M45, third edition); however, the standardized method used for antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) requires media not often maintained in clinical laboratories. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare alternative methods of AST for Aerococcus isolates.
METHODS: AST was performed on 134 clinical isolates using the Etest on three different types of agar, Vitek 2, and BD Phoenix

STUDY DESIGN: Single case report.
OBJECTIVE: Present a case of hip abscess culture positive for Aerococcus urinae in a man with paraplegia.
BACKGROUND: Aerococcus species are uncommonly reported and may be misinterpreted as alpha streptococci or staphylococci. This organism can cause significant morbidity due to urinary tract infection with septicemia or endocarditis.
METHODS: Single case report.
RESULTS: The patient required surgical incision and debridement. Open joint inspection was performed, which was complicated by superior dislocation. The patient later required a Girdlestone proced

Aerococcus sanguinicola is a bacterium that can cause urinary tract infections and on rare occasions infective endocarditis (IE). The prognosis of IE caused by aerococci is generally favourable despite that the patients are typically old and have multiple comorbidities. Here we report a case of A. sanguinicola native valve aortic IE in a 68-year-old man with an underlying urinary tract condition. The infection led to severe aortic valve insufficiency and rapid death before the patient could be subjected to surgery. This demonstrates that IE caused by A. sanguinicola can be severe and cause val

Aerococcus viridans has been reported as a human and animal pathogen causing urinary tract infection, arthritis, pneumonia, meningitis and endocarditis. Routinely, A. viridans is not surveyed in clinical diagnosis laboratories and commonly is misidentified as other bacteria. There is no concrete data on the prevalence and impact of the pathogen to both human and animal health. In the present study, we report the isolation and molecular and antibiotic susceptibility characterization of A. viridans strains from porcine urinary infections. A total of 22 isolates were identified as A. viridans by

Introduction. An infection of the lower urinary tract associated with an extremely unpleasant odour due to Aerococcus urinae in an otherwise healthy 5-year-old boy is described herein. Case presentation. Interestingly, imaging examination revealed the presence of a bladder diverticulum. Routine microbiological examination based on Gram staining, colony morphology and catalase reactivity suggested that the responsible pathogen could belong either to staphylococci, α-haemolytic streptococci or enterococci, which are more common urine isolates. Of note is that the VITEK 2 automated system could n

Risk factors for developing bloodstream infections (BSIs) caused by Aerococcus bacteria remain insufficiently examined. In this nationwide case-control study in Sweden, 19 of 23 clinical microbiological laboratories identified patients who had aerococcal BSIs during 2012-2016. We compared each of those index patients with 4 controls matched for age, sex, and county of residence. Overall, 588 episodes of aerococcal BSI occurred over 39.6 million person-years, corresponding to an average incidence of 1.48/100,000 person-years (95% CI 1.37-1.60/100,000 person-years). Most infections developed in

An elderly male with an extensive medical history was admitted for sepsis of unspecified origin; the source was later found to be an Aerococcus urinae urinary tract infection. Urinalysis and conventional urine culture were used in diagnosing this infection, and it was successfully treated with a 7-day course of intravenous ceftriaxone. The patient had no recurrence of urinary symptoms or development of complications at his follow-up. While A. urinae has traditionally been described as an uncommon and relatively avirulent source of urinary tract infections, increasing reports of positive isolat

BACKGROUND: Aerococcus urinae (A urinae), considered a rare pathogen, has been identified with increasing frequency in urine cultures. Only 8 cases of spondylodiscitis due to A urinae have been reported. Optimal treatment for invasive A urinae infection is undefined. However, the reported cases were treated successfully with diverse antibiotic regimen combinations, all including a β-lactam and beginning with at least 2 weeks of IV antibiotics.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 74-year-old man presented to the emergency department after 2 weeks of midthoracic back pain, lower extremity weakness, gait imbal

Background. Aerococcus urinae is a rare causative pathogen of infective endocarditis that results in a high risk of embolic events. The mortality rate for A urinae endocarditis is high. Old age and underlying urologic conditions are the best-known risk factors for infection. Case Description. We report the clinical course of the disease in a 49-year-old man who presented symptoms of a urinary tract infection. A few days later, transthoracic echocardiography showed a conspicuous mitral valve with myxomatous alterations. Following the detection of a cerebral embolism with associated stroke sympt

Seventy-nine isolates of oral streptococci and Aerococcus obtained from blood specimens between December 1997 and January 2000 were tested for high-level gentamicin resistance. Three isolates with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of > or =1024 microg/ml were selected as potential high-level gentamicin-resistant isolates. The DNA sequence of the structural gene encoding 6'-acetyltransferase-2"-phosphotransferase in the three high-level gentamicin-resistant isolates was investigated according to the method used for Enterococcus faecalis. The results of this gene analysis showed that all

Introduction. Aerococcus species in particular A. urinae are increasingly reported as causative agents of bacteraemia, urinary tract infection, sepsis, and endocarditis. We sought to establish the epidemiology of A. urinae in Glasgow hospitals and whether the presence of the organism in clinical isolates could be an indicator of undiagnosed urinary tract pathology.Hypothesis/Gap statement. The knowledge gap among clinical staffs on Aerococcus species as emerging pathogens can be filled by understanding its epidemiology and clinical importance.Aim. Aerococcus urinae is a rare cause of urinary tract infection (UTI) seen in elderly males with multimorbidity. Incidence is estimated between 0.15 and 0.8%. This organism is frequently misidentified for other gram-positive species. Missed or delayed diagnosis of A. urinae UTI can lead to systemic infection with high morbidity and potential mortality. We present a classic case of A. urinae UTI in a 91-year-old male with multiple comorbidities, including heart failure, diabetes mellitus, and metastatic prostate carcinoma. Empiric therapy with nitrofurantoin was unsuccessful, but intravenous ceftr

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: New methods of microbiology identification as MALDI-TOF MS increased the rate of Aerococci detection in microbiological samples making this germ an emerging pathogen. The purpose of this case report and literature review is to highlight the role of A. urinae in spine infection and discuss the management of this type of infection.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION: A 32-year-old man, with a medical history of paraplegia secondary to a relapsing form of multiple sclerosis, was admitted because of lower back-pain following complaints suggestive of urinary tract inf

Aerococcus urinae, a gram-positive, catalase-negative coccus, has emerged as a notable pathogen in clinical microbiology. It is traditionally associated with urinary tract infections in elderly males with underlying urologic conditions. Recently, A. urinae has been implicated in severe invasive infections outside the genitourinary tract including infective endocarditis, vertebral osteomyelitis, peritonitis, lymphadenitis, and discitis. We present the case of 84-year-old male with a history of aortic graft replacement who presented with five days of fever and fatigue. Blood and urine cultures g

Aerococcus urinae is an emerging Gram-positive uropathogen increasingly detected in elderly patients with structural abnormalities of the urinary tract. Although often dismissed as a contaminant, recent evidence highlights its potential to cause invasive infections, including infective endocarditis and, in rare cases, vertebral osteomyelitis or spondylodiscitis. Few such spinal infections have been reported to date. We describe the case of an 83-year-old man with a history of resected penile carcinoma (pT1a, R0; partial penectomy and bilateral inguinal lymphadenectomy in 2016), and chronic bla

OBJECTIVES: Identification and classification of microorganisms is one of the most important but difficult and challenging issues in microbiology. Whole genome sequencing (WGS), which can give a thorough understanding for the genome of bacteria strain, has been universally used for studying bacterial classification, evolution, and drug-related resistant genes. We in this study aimed to identify a Gram-positive, microaerophilic, catalase-negative cocci strain named AV208, which has shown resistance to vancomycin, by whole genome's average nucleotide identity (ANI) and high-throughput sequencing

INTRODUCTION: Pheromone-regulated horizontal transfer serves as the core mechanism for horizontal gene transfer of antibiotic resistance genes, playing a pivotal role in driving the spread of resistance. Given the strict species-specific constraints of this regulatory system, it is imperative to determine whether novel regulatory signal peptides and cross-genus receptors responsive to these signals exist, thereby elucidating its potential for disseminating resistance across broader microbial communities.
METHODS: This study isolated and screened a Gram-positive coccus, Aerococcus urinae Ae1,

In recent years, the clinical significance of Aerococcus urinae has been increasingly recognized. A. urinae has been implicated in cases of urinary tract infection (UTI; acute cystitis and pyelonephritis) in both male and female patients, ranging from children to older adults. Aerococcus urinae can also be invasive, causing urosepsis, endocarditis, and musculoskeletal infections. Mechanisms of pathogenesis in A. urinae infections are poorly understood, largely due to the lack of an animal model system. In response to this gap, we developed a model of A. urinae urinary tract infection in mice.

INTRODUCTION: Successful retrieval of Aerococcus viridans from porcine clinical specimens has been rarely described, and data has only been obtained from a few swine-producing countries. Therefore, the aim of this study was the isolation of A. viridans recovered from a specimen originating from a commercial pig farm located in Poland.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seven dead 12-week-old pigs weighing 24-26 kg with joint swelling of the hind legs were selected on a modern farrow-to-nursery farm in Poland in October 2023. The research material was joint swabs from one affected limb amputated through th
