Aeromonas infection in critically ill burn patients.

Aeromonas infection in burn patients is extremely uncommon. Here we report on four cases of Aeromonas infection in burn patients admitted to the BICU at the Singapore General Hospital burn unit between June 2001 and May 2006. Two patients had positive blood cultures, and the other two had tissue samples with growth. There was no history of exposure to soil or fresh water in all patients. The average age of patients was 35 years (range 24-41) and the average % TBSA was 48% (range 35-80). Cultures were isolated between days 2 and 4 post burn. There was one mortality in the series. Increasing ant

[Nosocomial Aeromonas hydrophila pneumonia complicating toxic coma].

A 24-year-old male homosexual drug addict was admitted in coma and circulatory failure after a 10 g overdose of acebutolol. The usual resuscitative measures were undertaken, together with administration of adrenaline and gastric lavage. Six hours of external cardiac massage and pacing, and high catecholamine doses (36 mg.h-1 of adrenaline and 60 micrograms.kg-1 x min-1 of dobutamine) were required before the circulatory system became again spontaneously efficient. After this acute episode, the patient improved despite acute tubular necrosis. On the third day, bilateral alveolar and interstitia

Posttraumatic brain abscess caused by Aeromonas hydrophila.

Posttraumatic brain abscesses are usually caused by Gram-negative bacilli, notably Enterobacteriaceae and Staphylococcus aureus. Although Aeromonas hydrophila is a recognized cause of trauma-related sepsis, it has not been previously isolated from posttraumatic brain abscesses. We describe the first case of Aeromonas hydrophila brain abscess.

Biliary tract infections caused by Aeromonas species.

This study investigated the clinical and microbiological characteristics of patients with Aeromonas infections of the biliary tract. Patients with bile cultures positive for Aeromonas species during the period July 2004 to December 2011 were identified from a computerized database of a hospital in Taiwan. Patients with Aeromonas infections of the biliary tract were further identified. During the study period, a total of 1,142 isolates of Aeromonas species were obtained from 750 patients. Of those patients, 91 (12.1 %) had Aeromonas infections of the biliary tract. The annual incidence (episode

Aeromonas hydrophila Sepsis Mimicking Vibrio vulnificus Infection.

Aeromonas hydrophila is a facultatively anaerobic, asporogenous gram-negative rod that has often been regarded as an opportunistic pathogen in hosts with impairment of a local or general defense mechanism. A 68-year-old alcoholic woman presented with shock and gangrene on the right arm. At first, her clinical presentations were severe painful erythematous swelling that worsened within a few hours with development of gangrene, edema, and blisters. Bullous fluid and blood cultures yielded A. hydrophila. Histopathological findings of sections obtained from the vesicle revealed subepidermal vesicl

Aeromonas hydrophilia infections after penetrating foot trauma.

The bacterium Aeromonas hydrophila is an anaerobic gram-negative bacillus commonly found in natural bodies of water and can cause infection in patients who suffer water-associated trauma or in immunocompromised hosts. The authors present 5 cases of penetrating wound trauma that did not involve any aquatic environment and developed rapidly forming infections. All patients presented with severe pain, cellulitis, ascending lymphangitis, fever, and pain on range of motion of the joint near the traumatic site. Presentation of clinical symptoms mimicked that of a septic joint or of severe streptococ

Non-enteritic aeromonas infections in hospitalized patients.

Aeromonas species were isolated from specimens other than faeces from 59 hospital inpatients over a 15 year period. Of the isolates, 79.7% were regarded as clinically significant, with skin and soft tissues and blood cultures as the commonest sites of infection. Of the isolates, 52.5% were hospital-acquired, and 55.9% of patients had serious underlying disease. Community-acquired infections in previously healthy individuals accounted for only 13.6% of isolates. However unlike many other opportunistic infections, aeromonas infection was not closely associated with prior antibiotic therapy, nor

Hypercalcemia associated with Aeromonas hydrophila gastro-enteritis.

We describe a 4 year old girl with acute Aeromonas hydrophila gastro-enteritis who presented with a combination of hypercalcemia, metabolic alkalosis, and renal impairment. Serum parathyroid hormone was not elevated. Both milk-alkali syndrome and intoxication of vitamins A and D were ruled out. The hypercalcemia, metabolic alkalosis, and renal impairment were improved by fluid infusion and intravenous administration of furosemide. Gastro-enteritis also improved with oral administration of the antibiotic norfloxacin. The association of A. hydrophila gastro-enteritis with hypercalcemia has not b

Genomic characterization of Aeromonas spp. isolates from striped catfish with motile Aeromonas septicemia and human bloodstream infections in Vietnam.

Aeromonas spp. are commonly found in the aquatic environment and have been responsible for motile Aeromonas septicemia (MAS) in striped catfish, resulting in significant economic loss. These organisms also cause a range of opportunistic infections in humans with compromised immune systems. Here, we conducted a genomic investigation of 87 Aeromonas isolates derived from diseased catfish, healthy catfish and environmental water in catfish farms affected by MAS outbreaks in eight provinces in Mekong Delta (years: 2012-2022), together with 25 isolates from humans with bloodstream infections (years

Gastrointestinal infection caused by five different strains of Aeromonas caviae and one of Aeromonas veronii: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Aeromonas species are considered opportunistic emerging pathogens with diarrheal disease being the most common manifestation. Infections involving more than one strain or species of Aeromonas are rarely documented, and their impact in the development of the infection and in the treatment has not been thoroughly investigated. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 33-year-old woman with a history of an autoimmune disease, who presented at the emergency department complaining of abdominal pain, fever, acute diarrhea and vomiting. The patient was diagnosed with gastroenteritis cause

Chlorine dioxide suppresses Aeromonas through thiol oxidation and modulates hepatic redox-immune responses in Aeromonas salmonicida-infected rainbow trout (Oncorhynchusmykiss).

Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is a potent oxidative disinfectant with potential use in bacterial disease control; however, its antibacterial mechanism and its influence on host redox-immune responses during Aeromonas salmonicida infection in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) remain unclear. Here, we evaluated the antibacterial activity of ClO2 against common bacterial pathogens, examined its thiol-targeting antibacterial mechanism, and characterized host toxicity, innate immune responses, oxidative stress, and hepatic transcriptomic regulation. ClO2 markedly inhibited Aeromonas hydrophila and A. s

Aeromonas dhakensis - A red alert in blood cultures!

Although Aeromonas dhakensis has recently been reported as an important human pathogen, it is still less frequently identified in comparison to Aeromonas hydrophila or Aeromonas caviae, due to the problem of identification in certain automated systems. This case report provides an impetus to identify and report this organism as soon as possible. Further studies on this organism's virulence and pathogenic mechanism, especially in healthcare settings, are warranted.

A fatal case of Aeromonas jandaei necrotizing fasciitis.

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs) are associated with a fulminating course because of their rapid destruction of tissue planes underlying the skin. Aeromonas -associated monomicrobial NSTIs are usually associated with exposure to fresh water, particularly among agricultural workers and fish handlers. Albeit uncommon in incidence, urgent medical and surgical intervention are required once a diagnosis has been made. CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old male patient, a known case of alcoholic liver disease, presented to the emergency department with pain and diffuse swelling of bila

A Case of Aeromonas trota in an Immunocompromised Patient with Diarrhea.

According to recent literature, 95.4% of the Aeromonas strains associated with human clinical cases correspond to four species: Aeromonas caviae, Aeromonas dhakensis, Aeromonas veronii and Aeromonas hydrophila. However, other less prevalent species such as Aeromonas trota, are also described from clinical samples. Based on its low incidence, the latter species can be regarded as rare and it is the only Aeromonas species susceptible to ampicillin. From the taxonomic point of view, A. trota is considered a synonym of the species Aeromonas enteropelogenes. The objective of this study is to presen

Development of duplex-PCR for identification of Aeromonas species.

INTRODUCTION: The number of reports of intestinal infections caused by Aeromonas spp. has increased significantly in recent years. In most clinical laboratories, identification of these bacteria is carried out by general phenotypic tests that sometimes do not accurately differentiate Aeromonas and Vibrio. METHODS: A duplex-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was developed directed to 2 targets identifying Aeromonas spp. pathogenic to humans. RESULTS: The duplex-PCR results were reproducible and specific for Aeromonas spp. pathogenic to humans. CONCLUSIONS: This method will allow differentiation

The occurrence and antibiotic resistance of motile Aeromonas in livestock.

The present study was carried out to assess the prevalence of motile Aeromonas spp. in the faeces of clinically healthy sheep, cattle and horses and evaluate their susceptibility to some anti-microbial agents. Rectal swabs from 120 sheep, 85 cattle and 20 horses were examined for Aeromonas species using alkaline peptone water (pH 8.4) as the enrichment medium and Aeromonas Selective Agar containing 5 mg/l ampicillin as the isolation medium. Identification and antibiotic resistance of motile Aeromonas strains was performed using Gram Negative Enteric ID panel. Motile aeromonads were isolated fr
