Rochalimaea (Bartonella) henselae is a fastidious, slowly growing, gram-negative bacillus that is an etiologic agent of bacillary angiomatosis, cat scratch disease, and related syndromes. Accumulation of direct microbiologic evidence of the relationship between the organism and the syndromes compatible with cat scratch disease has been hindered by the difficulties in the primary isolation of the organism from infected tissue specimens. A chemically defined liquid medium was developed to support the growth of Rochalimaea species to facilitate study of the organism. This medium was also used suc

A review of cat-scratch disease (CSD) and bacillary angiomatosis (BA) is presented on the basis of published articles. Two newly identified bacteria--Rochalimaea henselae and Afipia felis--have been isolated from patients with CSD. Preliminary investigations seem to indicate that A. felis is an uncommon cause of the disease. CSD may appear as a local suppurative lymphadenopathy or a systemic infection. BA is caused by Rochalimaea species and may appear as cutaneous, mucous or visceral angiomas or bacteremia. It may be a special manifestation of CSD in immunocompromised patients. A description

A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was designed to amplify DNA from Rochalimaea henselae, Rochalimaea quintana and Afipia felis in the purulent material from lymph nodes in three patients with clinical cat-scratch disease (CSD) and two patients with lymphadenitis from other causes. All of the patients with CSD had positive immunofluorescent antibody serology for R. henselae, while none of the controls was positive. PCR amplification confirmed the presence of R. henselae DNA and the absence of R. quintana and A. felis DNA in the purulent material from CSD patients. PCR samples from control

Many of the feline zoonoses occur more frequently in veterinary personnel owing to their direct contact with cats and the potential for exposure to infected body tissue or fluids. Infection of humans with Afipia felis, Yersinia pestis, Francisella tularensis, and other aerobic/anaerobic bacteria may cause great discomfort and in some situations terminal illness. Although many systemic fungal agents infect humans and cats, only Sporothrix schenckii has been shown to infect humans following direct exposure to infected cats. Various parasites, enteric protozoans and bacteria, and Toxoplasma gondi

Fourteen juvenile scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini; SHS) were captured between November and December 2014 in the Rewa Delta in Fiji, and assessed for intestinal microflora characterisation using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing by Illumina Miseq. The microbial population revealed a fluctuating dominance between the Enterobacteriaceae and Vibrionaceae families, namely Citrobacter and Photobacterium spp. Other related marine operational taxonomic units were closely related to Afipia felis, Chloroflexus aggregans, Psychrobacter oceani, Pontibacter actiniarum and Shigella sonnei. Two sharks

The cat-scratch disease (CSD) is known as a nosological entity since 1950. It was diagnosed by the clinical symptoms, epidemiologic data, and the intracutaneous test of Hanger and Rose. The aetiologic agent is Bartonella (formerly Rochalimaea) henselae occurring in thirty to fifty percent of healthy cats. The gramnegative alpha-2-proteobacteria cause the CSD but also fever in healthy humans. Patients suffering from AIDS show bacillary angiomatosis, bacillary peliosis hepatis, endocarditis, and septicemia. There is an open question for other aetiologic agents causing CSD as cofactors. Bacillary angiomatosis (BA) and chronic bartonellosis are bacterial infections of humans which result in an unusual vascular proliferative tissue response. In order to determine their phylogenetic relationships, we have determined greater than 95% of the 16S rRNA sequences for these two organisms by amplification directly from infected BA tissue and from a Bartonella bacilliformis lyophilized culture. The BA agent and B. bacilliformis are closely related alpha-proteobacteria (98.5%), although the BA agent is more closely related to Rochalimaea quintana (99.1%). Contrary to previous belief, the

Cat-scratch disease has been recognized since 1889 in association with the oculoglandular syndrome of Parinaud. The epidemiologic association with cats was first made in 1931 and further substantiated throughout the years, refining the interaction predominantly to kittens. Putative infectious agents have included numerous species of bacteria, chlamydiae, and viruses. The cultivation of Afipia spp. in the late 1980s appeared to answer the mystery of the identity of the agent. However, even more recent analysis, which has combined traditional microbiology, molecular methods, and additional epide

First described by Robert Debré in 1950, cat scratch disease, usually observed in children and young adults (80% of the case occur in subjects under 18), is the principal cause of chronic benign lymph node enlargement. The Centers for Disease Control at Atlanta currently recognize Afipia felis and Rochalimaea henselae as the causal agents of cat scratch disease. Cats transmit the disease to humans by skin scratches or by licking open wounds. The bacilli can also be transmitted by dogs, monkeys, squirels or inert objects. The contaminating cats are usually young. There is no interhuman transmis

The mining industry produces significant volumes of flotation wastewater that contains xanthates, such as potassium amyl xanthate (PAX, C6H11OS2K), that pose toxicity risks to ecosystems and humans. In this study, an oxygen-based membrane biofilm reactor (O2-MBfR) was applied to biodegrade high concentrations (75∼200 mg/L) of PAX; the MBfR achieved > 99% removal of PAX with minimal carbon disulfide (CS2) emission at a PAX surface loading rate of 770 mg/m2-d. The microbial community adapted to changing PAX loading and O2 pressure, and it consistently gave efficient removals of PAX and soluble C

Locoregional expression of cat scratch disease is well known, but despite advances in microbiology over the last 10 years leading to the description of two new bacteria (Afipia felis, Bartonella henselae) the infective agent responsible for cat scratch syndrome remains unknown. Until the 80s, only one systemic disease was attributed to infection with a germ in the Bartonella genus: trench fever. With the onset of the AIDS epidemic, new clinical syndromes caused by Bartonella bacteria have been described: bacillary angiomatosis, hepatic peliosis, cases of recurrent septicemia, cases of endocard

To elucidate the role of ameba-associated microorganisms (AAMs) as etiologic agents of pneumonia, we screened for Legionella spp., Parachlamydia acanthamoeba, Afipia sp., Bosea spp., Bradyrhizobium spp., Mesorhizobium amorphae, Rasbo bacterium, Azorhizobium caulinodans, Acanthamoeba polyphaga mimivirus, and conventional microorganisms in 210 pneumonia patients in intensive-care units by using culture, polymerase chain reaction, and serologic testing. These resulted in 59 diagnoses in 40 patients. AAMs and non-AAMs were implicated in 10.5% of the patients. The infectious agents were identified

Cat scratch disease (CSD) is a clinical condition whose aetiological agent, according to recent findings, is of bacterial origin. Two Gram-negative bacteria are invoked as causative agents of CSD, namely Afipia felis and Rochalimaea henselae. In this paper, five patients with suspected CSD were studied in terms of binding capacity of A. felis and R. henselae to their own peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL). This parameter was correlated with serum antibody titres to both A. felis and R. henselae, as determined by an indirect fluorescence assay (IFA). Results demonstrate that in four out of five

Cat scratch disease (CSD) is usually manifested in children and young adults as a benign, chronic self-limited lymphadenopathy. However, various atypical presentations have been described, especially in immunocompromised hosts. 1 of 5 cases of CSD diagnosed here during 1985-1993 is presented. In 3 cases the diagnosis was supported by lymph node biopsy in which the organisms were visualized by Warthin-Starry silver impregnation staining. Recent publications indicate that Afipia felis and Rochalimaea henselae, both Gram-negative bacilli, were isolated from infected lymph nodes in CSD. The usual

The cause of cat scratch disease (CSD), first described in France in 1950 and in the United States in 1951, was unknown until 1983 when the bacterium in lymph nodes was detected using a Warthin-Starry silver stain. Afipia felis has been an infrequent cause of CSD since1988, when this gram-negative bacterium was first isolated from 10 patients with CSD. In 1992 Bartonella organisms were isolated from immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients. An indirect fluorescent antibody test to detect bartonella-specific serum immunoglobulins was developed in 1992. Since then multiple studies have sho

Polarity reversal is one of the effective strategies to rapidly start up denitrifying BESs,but the long-term performances of the denitrifying BESs operated under polarity reversal receive little attention. This study investigated the effects of periodic polarity reversal (PPR) and polarity reversal once only (PRO) on the long-term performances of denitrifying BESs. Repeatable oxidative and reductive currents were observed in the BESs obtained by PPR (PPR-BESs). The peak reductive currents of the PPR-BESs reached 0.95 A/m2, and nitrate was mainly removed by dissimilatory nitrate reduction to am

For decades, bacteriophages (phages) have been used for Brucella species identification in the diagnosis and epidemiology of brucellosis. Traditional Brucella phage typing is a multi-day procedure including the isolation of a pure culture, a step that can take up to three weeks. In this study, we focused on the use of brucellaphages for sensitive detection of the pathogen in clinical and other complex samples, and developed an indirect method of Brucella detection using real-time quantitative PCR monitoring of brucellaphage DNA amplification via replication on live Brucella cells. This assay a

Microplastics in urban rivers provide bacterial niches and serve as dispersal vectors for antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) dissemination, which may exacerbate risks in the aquatic systems. However, whether MPs in the river would also selectively enrich ARGs and the underlying mechanisms shaping the resistome on MPs remains largely unknown. In this study, we explored the occurrence of ARGs, bacterial communities, and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) on MPs and in waters from the Huangpu River in China. Microplastics were widely distributed in the river (1.78 ± 0.84 items/L), with overwhelming pe
