BACKGROUND: Studies related to tube feeding in people with dementia (PWD) remain a contested topic, neglecting the importance of speech-language therapists' (SLTs) role in dysphagia management. Furthermore, SLT practices and beliefs regarding tube feeding in people with advanced dementia in an upper-middle-income country, such as South Africa, are unexplored.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the practices and beliefs of SLTs in South Africa regarding tube feeding placement in PWD.
METHOD: A self-compiled online survey was distributed using social media platforms and was completed by

BACKGROUND: Depression is one of the most common psychiatric disorders in people living with HIV (PLHIV). Depression has a negative impact on both mental and physical health and is mainly associated with suboptimal HIV treatment outcomes. To encourage successful aging and the achievement of the 3 × 90 objectives in older PLHIV, the psychological domain must not be neglected. In this context and as data are scarce in West Africa, this study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and the factors associated with severe depressive symptoms in older PLHIV living in this region of the world.
METHODS: Dat

Although physical function decline is common with aging, the burden of this impairment remains underestimated in patients living with HIV (PLHIV), particularly in the older people receiving antiretroviral treatment (ART) and living in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). PLHIV aged ≥50 years old and on ART since ≥6 months were included (N = 333) from three clinics (two in Côte d'Ivoire, one in Senegal) participating in the International epidemiological Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA) West Africa collaboration. Physical function was measured using the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), the unip

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a waterborne virus that causes acute hepatitis in immunocompromised patients and those who are immunocompetent. Few cases of chronic HEV have been described in industrialized countries. The Central African Republic is 1 of the few countries in the world that is endemic for both HIV and HEV. The prevalence of HIV infection is estimated to be 4.9% among adults aged 15-49 years, and hepatitis E is epidemo-endemic. The aim of this study was to characterize the epidemiology of HEV infection in people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Bangui.
METHODS: A cross-section

We investigated the contributions of thymidine analogue and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) antiretroviral therapy on renal mitochondrial toxicity in Ghanaian people with HIV (PWH). Similar levels of renal biochemical and mitochondrial dysfunction were seen, and there was no increased risk in PWH who had sequenced from thymidine analogue to TDF. However, mild renal impairment was associated with mitochondrial DNA damage in TDF but not thymidine analogue-treated PWH. These data support the continued use of TDF in resource-limited settings.

BACKGROUND: It is now widely accepted that climate change is occurring as a result of the accumulation of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere. With the prospect of a warmer world, increased attention is being devoted to the implications for worker well-being and work performance.
OBJECTIVES: The 'high occupational temperature health and productivity suppression' (HOTHAPS) programme is a multi-centre health research and prevention programme aimed at characterising and quantifying the extent to which working people are affected by, or adapt to, heat exposure while working. The main aim of

There are no data from West Africa reporting musculoskeletal (MSK) disease in people living with HIV (PLWH). Our primary outcome was to measure the prevalence of MSK symptoms in PLWH in urban West Africa. Our secondary outcomes were to describe the disability, impact on work and treatment use associated with the presence of MSK pain. We conducted an e-questionnaire-based point prevalence study of musculoskeletal symptoms, associated disability and treatment in 292 PLWH attending routine follow-up in Lagos, Nigeria. Seventy-three (25%) patients reported MSK pain; 28 (38%) reported chronic sympt

Disclosure of HIV status occurs for a variety of reasons and in various contexts, such as to sexual partners to enable safer sexual choices, to health-care workers to access treatment and care services and to family and community members to gain various forms of support. The reasons for disclosure or non-disclosure are shaped by the relationships, needs and circumstances of people living with HIV (PLHIV) at the time of disclosure. The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe the act and experience of disclosure in order to understand how these experiences of disclosure impact on t

BACKGROUND: The prevalence and incidence of tuberculosis (TB) is high among people living with HIV (PLWH) but is often underdiagnosed in HIV programmatic settings.
SETTING: President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)-supported research sites in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Nigeria.
METHODS: All patients underwent molecular testing at entry into a longitudinal cohort of PLWH and annually thereafter. We assessed the prevalence and incidence of TB and identified clinical and demographic factors associated with prevalent and incident TB using logistic regression and Cox proportional haza

BACKGROUND: The emphasis placed on the activities of mobile teams in the detection of gambiense human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) can at times obscure the major role played by fixed health facilities in HAT control and surveillance. The lack of consistent and detailed data on the coverage of passive case-finding and treatment further constrains our ability to appreciate the full contribution of the health system to the control of HAT.
METHODS: A survey was made of all fixed health facilities that are active in the control and surveillance of gambiense HAT. Information on their diagnostic an

As people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) live longer, they increasingly rely on informal caregivers. African American caregivers of PLWHA may face elevated risk for stress-related health problems from caregiving demands, HIV-related stigma, racial discrimination, and limited access to culturally responsive services. Mindfulness-based interventions can reduce caregiver stress, but in-person delivery may not be feasible. This study evaluated the feasibility of an enhanced digital mindfulness app for these caregivers, addressing recruitment, engagement, retention, and acceptability. A sequential mi

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly affecting populations in low- and middle-income countries. Lower screening utilization among African descent has been linked to delayed diagnosis and early intervention. This review aims to identify the most common risk and protective factors of CRC among people of African descent. A comprehensive search was conducted on PubMed and Google Scholar databases from inception to the 21st of April 2025, and 5062 articles were synthesized. Of these, 30 articles were included for

BACKGROUND: Most research on human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) viremia and cancer risk is from high-income countries. We evaluated the association between HIV-1 viremia and the risk of various cancer types among people with HIV (PWH) in South Africa.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the South African HIV Cancer Match study, based on laboratory measurements from the National Health Laboratory Service and cancer records from the National Cancer Registry from 2004 to 2014. Using Cox proportional hazards models, we estimated hazard ratios (HR) for cancer incidence per unit increase in time-upd

Human populations adapting to diverse aspects of their environment such as climate and pathogens leave signatures of genetic variation. This principle may apply to people of West Central African descent in the United States, who are at increased risk of certain chronic conditions and diseases compared to their European counterparts. Less well known is that they are also at reduced risk of other diseases. While discriminatory practices in the United States continue to affect access to and the quality of healthcare, the health disparities affecting African Americans may also be due in part to ev

OBJECTIVE: Studies that used an intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT) have suggested that race is an important modulator of insulin sensitivity, β-cell function, and insulin clearance. However, the validity of the IVGTT has been challenged.
METHODS: This study assessed insulin sensitivity and insulin kinetics in non-Hispanic White (NHW, n = 29) and African American (AA, n = 14) people with obesity by using a hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic pancreatic clamp with glucose tracer infusion, an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), and an IVGTT.
RESULTS: Hepatic insulin sensitivity was better in AA

Most measures developed in high income countries to screen for major depressive disorder (MDD) among people living with HIV (PWH) demonstrate suboptimal psychometric properties when utilized in non-western, resource limited settings due to their high false positive rates. For standardized MDD screening to be implementable in local settings, a measure is needed that reduces diagnostic burden by being highly sensitive while limiting false positives. This study sought to evaluate the ability of the locally developed South African Depression Scale (SADS) to screen for MDD in PWH in Cape Town. The

Over a period of 2 years, 26 subjects with epilepsy following non-missile head injury were referred to the neurology clinic at Muhimbili Medical Centre, Dar es Salaam. The mean age was 28.5 yr. Twenty of these subjects were males. Sixteen (62%) were victims of road traffic accidents, six (23%) had direct blows of the head and four (15%) had fallen from heights. The first late seizure occurred 2 weeks after injury in all subjects. Fifty-eight per cent had the first late seizure between the third and seventh month after injury. Only 8% had the first seizure after 1 year of injury. Posttraumatic

BACKGROUND: South Africa's divide between the public and private healthcare sectors has implications for healthcare access and quality of life (QoL) outcomes. This exploratory study aimed to identify the types of treatments used by people with Parkinson's disease (PWPD) in two different healthcare settings (public and private), and their perception of treatment satisfaction. Additionally, this study compared the QoL experienced between these healthcare settings, and investigated whether the number of treatments, internet access and income level were associated with QoL.
METHODS: Cross-section
