Onset of Visual Snow Syndrome After the First Migraine Episode in a Pediatric Patient: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Visual snow syndrome (VSS) is a neurological disorder characterized by persistent positive visual disturbances. VSS is known to be a rare condition; however, it is becoming increasingly recognized by neurologists and neuroophthalmologists. Despite this, it is not commonly described in pediatric patients. METHODS: We describe a pediatric girl with onset of persistent visual phenomena at age 13 years, which she described as "TV static," with associated afterimages, photopsia, nyctalopia, and photophobia. These visual disturbances have persisted for two years. RESULTS: The patient

Spatio-temporal contrast sensitivity, coherent motion, and visible persistence in developmental dyslexia.

Three experiments measured spatio-temporal contrast sensitivity, coherent motion, and visible persistence in a single group of children with developmental dyslexia and a matched control group. The findings were consistent with a transient channel disorder in the dyslexic group which showed a reduction in contrast sensitivity at low spatial frequencies, a significant reduction in sensitivity for coherent motion, and a significantly longer duration of visible persistence. The results were also examined by classifying the dyslexic group into dyseidetic, dysphonetic, and mixed (dysphoneidetic) sub

[Experiences in the measurements of correspondence using dark red glass and according to image after Cüppers (author's transl)].

The measurement of correspondence using a dark red glass in front of the fixating eye and a foveal after image in the deviating eye according to Cüppers is really an efficient clinical method. In spite of the fact that we are dealing with a dissociating test this method offers these advantages: 1. The objective angle is well known at any time. 2. This method allows a sufficient discrimination in the range of 15 min. of arc. 3. There is a permanent retinal stimulation contrary to the method utilizing after-flash images.--General objections to dissociating tests, for example that given by Goldma

Interocular transfer of a visual aftereffect in early-onset esotropia.

The interocular transfer of the tilt aftereffect was studied in strabismic patients with early-onset esotropia and in controls. Squinting subjects were divided into a microtropia subgroup with anomalous binocular vision and a large-angle esotropia subgroup with total suppression of the deviated eye. Patients with alternating microtropia and large-angle esotropia showed normal or moderately reduced interocular transfer of the aftereffect. Patients with monocular microtropia with medium- or low-degree amblyopia showed a reduced monocular visual aftereffect in the dominant eye and practically no

Spatiotopic and retinotopic memory in the context of natural images.

Neural responses throughout the visual cortex encode stimulus location in a retinotopic (i.e., eye-centered) reference frame, and memory for stimulus position is most precise in retinal coordinates. Yet visual perception is spatiotopic: objects are perceived as stationary, even though eye movements cause frequent displacement of their location on the retina. Previous studies found that, after a single saccade, memory of retinotopic locations is more accurate than memory of spatiotopic locations. However, it is not known whether various aspects of natural viewing affect the retinotopic referenc

Motion aftereffect elicits smooth pursuit eye movements.

A moving stimulus is normally required to elicit smooth pursuit eye movements that serve to keep the retinal image of moving objects on the fovea. Recent experiments have shown that in cases where motion cues are ambiguous, pursuit eye movements tend to agree in direction and speed with the percept of motion. Here, we exploit the motion aftereffect (MAE) to show for the first time that smooth pursuit eye movements can also be elicited by the illusory motion of a stationary stimulus. After prolonged exposure to a moving stimulus, subjects show reliable pursuit of a physically stationary stimulu

The "marche-en-étoile" revised. The influence of after-images and prism-glasses on starwalks.

An analysis of the role that casual after-images play in starwalk (marche-en-étoile) tests, shows that these can be turned from unreliable into reliable tests. The vestibular function test described in this article is as follows: (a) the individual walks with open eyes to a point of reference 5 m distant. On arrival, he closes his eyes and walks backward and forward according to the marche-en-étoile procedure. (b) Same procedure as (a), but now the orientation point is replaced by a light source that is switched off when the patient reaches it. (c) Same procedure as (b), but now the patient is

Flicker masking and developmental dyslexia.

Recent studies have provided evidence that dyslexic children tend to show longer visual persistence than control children when presented with low-spatial-frequency grating stimuli. The possibility that this phenomenon might reflect an impairment of inhibitory Y-cell activity in the visual system of dyslexics has been investigated. A flicker masking technique was used to mask Y-cell activity selectively in a group of dyslexic boys and a group of age-matched controls. There were no overall differences in reaction times to the offsets of grating patterns of various spatial frequencies between the

Assessment of a novel patient reported outcome measure for visual snow syndrome: the Colorado visual snow survey 2.0.

INTRODUCTION: Visual snow syndrome (VSS) is a condition in which people experience a continuous overlay of small dots atop their entire visual field. As a newly recognized condition, there is a gap in patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) that target VSS symptom impact. METHODS: We sought to assess the Colorado Visual Snow Survey 2.0 (CVSS) as a possible PROM for VSS using a convenience sample of undergraduate students and people with VSS recruited through the Visual Snow Initiative (N = 144). RESULTS: We found the CVSS (1) strongly differentiated people with VSS from healthy controls, (

Cotard's syndrome in a patient with coexistent Capgras' syndrome, syndrome of subjective doubles, and palinopsia.

The hallmark of Cotard's syndrome is the delusion of being dead. It is usually seen in affective disorders, and its existence as a separate entity is controversial. A patient is described who presented with paranoid schizophrenia, Cotard's syndrome, the misidentification syndromes of Capgras and subjective doubles, and palinopsia (visual perseveration). Focal theories for these conditions are briefly outlined and the patient is discussed with reference to them. It is proposed that this case supports the concept that Cotard's syndrome is a distinct disorder. The possibility of cerebral dysfunct

Direction-specific fMRI adaptation reveals the visual cortical network underlying the "Rotating Snakes" illusion.

The "Rotating Snakes" figure elicits a clear sense of anomalous motion in stationary repetitive patterns. We used an event-related fMRI adaptation paradigm to investigate cortical mechanisms underlying the illusory motion. Following an adapting stimulus (S1) and a blank period, a probe stimulus (S2) that elicited illusory motion either in the same or in the opposite direction was presented. Attention was controlled by a fixation task, and control experiments precluded explanations in terms of artefacts of local adaptation, afterimages, or involuntary eye movements. Recorded BOLD responses were

Abnormal visual phenomena in posterior cortical atrophy.

Individuals with posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) report a host of unusual and poorly explained visual disturbances. This preliminary report describes a single patient (CRO), and documents and investigates abnormally prolonged colour afterimages (concurrent and prolonged perception of colours complimentary to the colour of an observed stimulus), perceived motion of static stimuli, and better reading of small than large letters. We also evaluate CRO's visual and vestibular functions in an effort to understand the origin of her experience of room tilt illusion, a disturbing phenomenon not previo

Visual aftereffects and the consequences of visual system lesions on their perception in the rhesus monkey.

This study examined the consequences of visual system lesions on visual aftereffects produced by achromatic stimuli of various luminance contrasts and chromatic stimuli of various wavelength compositions. The effects of repeated exposure to such adapting stimuli were assessed using probes whose luminance contrast and wavelength composition were systematically varied using both detection and discrimination paradigms. Interocular tests revealed that both peripheral and central mechanisms contribute to the visual aftereffects produced by the adapting stimulus arrays used in this study. Contrary t

A 9-Year-Old Boy With Strabismus, Anisometropic Amblyopia, and Myopia in the Left Eye, Associated With Myelinated Retinal Nerve Fibers Syndrome, Managed With Multimodal Therapy.

BACKGROUND Myelinated retinal nerve fibers (MRNF) syndrome is a rare, benign congenital condition in which white nerve fibers can be seen extending from the optic nerve to involve the retina. The condition is usually asymptomatic, but some cases of MRNF syndrome are associated with axial myopia, amblyopia (lazy eye), and strabismus (squint). This report describes the case of a 9-year-old boy with strabismus, anisometropic amblyopia, and MRNF-associated myopia in the left eye, managed with multimodal therapy and evaluated with pattern visual evoked potential (PVEP) testing. CASE REPORT A 9-year

[Cerebral diplopia and triplopia--a proposal for responsible lesion and mechanism].

We reported 2 cases of multiple images of cerebral origin. Case 1 was a 26-year-old right-handed woman, who showed a defect in the peripheral part of right visual field, with photopsia in the defective field, and cerebral diplopia within the perimetry-determined preserved part of the right hemifield. This was associated with a small infarction in the deep and anterior part of the area 17. The phenomenon was well-illustrated by her own detailed drawing. Case 2 was a 67-year-old right-handed man, who, following a hypoxic accident, developed monocular triplopia. MRI revealed laminar necrosis in t
