Sex determination and age estimation method using the trabecular structure of the third cervical vertebral body by head and neck CT in Japanese adults.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop sex determination and age estimation equations using the trabecular structure of the third cervical vertebra from head and neck computed tomography (CT) images by analyzing bone microarchitecture. METHODS: Trabecular bone structure was analyzed in a centrally located region of interest (ROI) within the third cervical vertebral body (C3) using CT scans from 132 Japanese adults (66 males and 66 females). Three primary measurements were taken: total vertebral volume (Tissue Volume, TV; mm3), trabecular bone volume (Bone Volume, BV; mm3), and trabecular bon

Relationship between dental and skeletal maturation in Danish schoolchildren.

Spearman correlation coefficients between the number of emerged permanent teeth and RUS (TW2 method) skeletal maturity scores were calculated among 1412 boys and 1332 girls, aged 7-14 yr, divided into 3-month age groups. "Moving averages" are presented of the correlation coefficients for every four 3-month age groups at a time. The pattern of the correlations differed between the sexes. However, in general, weak associations were found (mean r = 0.15-0.16), but correlations were significant at the 1% level in 8.5-9.5-yr-old girls and around 12 yr in both sexes. It is argued that skeletal, rath

The first case of C4-Blast related death in Malaysia: A multidisciplinary approach illustrated with emphasis on conjoint anthropologic and radiologic expertise in forensic identification of skeletal remains.

BACKGROUND: Blast related deaths are often shrouded by diagnostic and medicolegal complexities requiring multidisciplinary expertise in order to gauge accurate identification of the victims and document scientific investigations comprehensively. In the advent of more sophisticated technology, anthropologic methods can now be applied into post mortem imaging interpretation. The traditional imaging roles of characterizing osseous fragmentation, detecting and localizing foreign bodies can be expanded to simulate and support physical anthropologic examination to assist in documentation for court p

Correlations Between Eight Comprehensive Skeletal Maturity Systems in a Modern Peripubertal Pediatric Population.

BACKGROUND: Several skeletal maturity systems allow for accurate skeletal age assessment from a wide variety of joints. However, discrepancies in estimates have been noted when applying systems concurrently. The aims of our study were to (1) compare the agreement among 8 different skeletal maturity systems in modern pediatric patients and (2) compare these discrepancy trends qbetween modern and historic children. METHODS: We performed a retrospective (January 2000 to May 2022) query of our picture archiving and communication systems and included peripubertal patients who had at least two radi

Assessment of correlation between hand-wrist maturation and cervical vertebral maturation: a fractal analysis study.

BACKGROUND: To investigate whether fractal dimension (FD) measurements from hand-wrist radiographs and lateral cephalometric radiographs are correlated with each other and with skeletal maturation stages. METHODS: In this retrospective study conducted on hand-wrist and lateral cephalometric radiographs obtained from patients between 2017 and 2023, hand-wrist maturation stages (HWMS) and cervical vertebral maturation stages (CVMS) of 144 subjects (6 to 17 years of age) were assessed radiographically. The participants were divided into nine groups (n = 16 each) based on HWMS. Fractal analysis w

Van Wyk and Grumbach syndrome: an unusual form of precocious puberty.

An 8-year-old girl presented with precocious menstruation and growth delay. Laboratory data revealed hypothyroidism and an X-ray of the wrist showed a delayed bone age. The Van Wyk and Grumbach syndrome (VWGS) was diagnosed and thyroid replacement was started with resolution of the symptoms. The association of precocious puberty and/or polycystic ovaries, delayed bone age and hypothyroidism is known as the Van Wyk and Grumbach syndrome. Clinically this syndrome is a diagnostic challenge because hypothyroidism usually leads to pubertal and growth delay, whereas in case of VWGS hypothyroidism it

Hypertrichosis cubiti (hairy elbows) and short stature: a recognisable association.

We report four patients with hypertrichosis cubiti who were referred for investigation of short stature. Two males, whose height was on and just below the 3rd centile respectively, were sporadic cases and two females with disproportionate short stature were mother and daughter. Radiological changes present in the familial cases were non-specific and biochemical investigations were normal. Of the four other published cases, two were sporadic and of normal height. The other two were sibs with short stature and their parents were heterozygous for the Weill-Marchesani syndrome. We were unable to a

Biological sex variation in bone mineral density in the cranium and femur.

OBJECTIVES: Sex and age trends in bone mineral density (BMD) play an important role in the estimation of age-at-death (AAD) of unidentified human remains. Current methodologies lack the ability to precisely estimate age in older individuals. In this study, BMD of the cranium and femur measured by DXA were examined to establish their applicability for age estimation in older adults. BMD as measured by DXA, is most commonly used clinically for prediction of osteoporotic fracture risk. We hypothesized that weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing bones, the femur and cranium, respectively, would pro

Complete redirectional acetabular osteotomies for neurogenic and syndromic hip dysplasia.

Neurogenic conditions and syndromes are often associated with clinically significant acetabular dysplasia and/or instability of the hip. Options for surgical treatment include reshaping, salvage, or redirectional pelvic osteotomies. "Complete" redirectional osteotomies, including the triple innominate osteotomy and the periacetabular osteotomy, completely free the acetabulum from the rest of the pelvis thereby allowing the surgeon to obtain large corrections and to control the position of the acetabulum in multiple planes. As a result, these procedures can be extremely useful in the treatment

Hormonal changes during puberty: V. Transient pubertal gynecomastia: abnormal androgen-estrogen ratios.

The plasma profiles of 8 hormones were followed over the course of prepuberty and puberty in 30 adolescent males who developed gynecomastia and 24 who did not. Throughout puberty, ratios of delta 4-androstenedione to estrone (E1) and estradiol (E2) were significantly lower in the gynecomastia group than in the control group. Similarly, ratios of dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate to E1 and E2 were significantly lower in the gynecomastia group. In contrast, ratios of plasma testosterone to E1 and E2 as well as plasma progesterone and PRL concentrations, were similar in both groups. Because of the a

Reliability of cervical vertebral maturation compared to hand-wrist for skeletal maturation assessment in growing subjects: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Radiographic methods to assess skeletal maturity (SM) have a key role in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) management, allowing to predict risk of spinal curve progression. Cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) has been recently introduced as an alternative tool to assess skeletal maturity; however, its clinical role is still debated. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to investigate the reliability of CVM in the SM assessment of growing subjects, comparing it to hand wrist maturation (HVM). METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were systematically searched

Final height prediction in constitutional growth delay.

Methods to predict the final stature of children are commonly used in pediatric endocrinology since one of the questions that parents have about their short children is how tall he or she will be as an adult. There is a disparity between what the family wants and what the physician expects from a height prediction, and what is available. The family wants an accurate prediction of final height for their child. What the physician expects is a well-validated and accurate technique applicable to individual children and that can be trusted for use, not just with normally growing children, but also

[Estimation of bone maturation and calculations of prediction of adult height as tools for the evaluation of growth disorders (author's transl)].

The methods of estimation of bone maturation (Greulich & Pyle. Tanner et al.) and the possibilities for the calculation of future adult height (Bayley & Pinneau, Roche et al., Tanner et al.) are briefly described and their advantages and disadvantages in normal children and in children with growth disorders are discussed. In normal children, all methods provide valuable results, but there are small differences of precision depending on whether the pubertal development is early, average, or late. In pathological conditions, however, as e.g. in precocious puberty or in girls with Turner syndrome

Dental development in precocious puberty.

One hundred and one children with precocious puberty were given an oral examination. Dental root development was assessed using panoramic radiographs. All mandibular canines, pre-molars, and molars which could be visualized without apparent distortion were included. The patients were grouped for analysis according to the etiology of their precocity, e.g., McCune-Albright syndrome, familial male, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, central nervous system lesions, and idiopathic precocious puberty. Dental development was significantly retarded relative to their chronological age in patients with idi

Facial growth parameters in Down syndrome: Review of the literature and forensic application for missing persons age progression.

PURPOSE: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) show growth trajectories which deviate from standard ones due to variations in the growth of facial structures. Studying the effect of aging on the faces of DS individuals is necessary to obtain an accurate result through age progression, a technique based on the study of physiognomic features and used in cases of missing persons. Here we present scientific publications that delve into the rhythms of aging and morphological characteristics of facial features in DS individuals to enable appropriate age progression in cases of missing DS individuals.
