Anosmia and ageusia associated with coronavirus infection (COVID-19) - what is known?

In 2020 a new pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is affecting the lives of millions of patients and healthcare workers worldwide. The clinical picture of this infection is in a dynamic process of discovery, and more symptoms emerge as the clinicians observe and diagnose manifestations that affect multiple organs. Anosmia (loss of smell), and ageusia (loss of taste) become more frequently cited as independent symptoms or in association with the most common manifestations of the disease, such as fever, cough and dyspnea. A thorough screening program will prevent most nosocomial and co

Genome-wide Machine Learning Analysis of Anosmia and Ageusia with COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused substantial worldwide disruptions in health, economy, and society, manifesting symptoms such as loss of smell (anosmia) and loss of taste (ageusia), that can result in prolonged sensory impairment. Establishing the host genetic etiology of anosmia and ageusia in COVID-19 will aid in the overall understanding of the sensorineural aspect of the disease and contribute to possible treatments or cures. By using human genome sequencing data from the University of Iowa (UI) COVID-19 cohort (N=187) and the National Institute of Health All of Us (AoU) Research Program C

Anosmia and ageusia as presenting complaints of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infection.

The recently discovered SARS-CoV2 virus produces a influenza like illness named Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The usual presentation is with upper/lower respiratory tract symptoms and rarely gastrointestinal symptoms. Although some of the clinical features of this novel disease like fever, dry cough, and shortness of breath have been well documented in literature, we report hitherto infrequently reported clinical features of this disease, namely Anosmia and Ageusia.

Nuclear bilateral Bell's palsy and ageusia associated with Mycoplasma pneumoniae pulmonary infection.

This case report describes a case of nuclear bilateral Bell's palsy and ageusia associated with Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection. Magnetic resonance imaging evidenced T2-weighted hyper-intense protuberantial lesions. Such topography leading to a nuclear palsy contrasts with previously reported infectious diplegia involving only peripheral facial nerves, and has not yet been described in the spectrum of M. pneumoniae post-infectious neurological manifestations.

Possible Use of Phytochemicals for Recovery from COVID-19-Induced Anosmia and Ageusia.

The year 2020 became the year of the outbreak of coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, which escalated into a worldwide pandemic and continued into 2021. One of the unique symptoms of the SARS-CoV-2 disease, COVID-19, is the loss of chemical senses, i.e., smell and taste. Smell training is one of the methods used in facilitating recovery of the olfactory sense, and it uses essential oils of lemon, rose, clove, and eucalyptus. These essential oils were not selected based on their chemical constituents. Although scientific studies have shown that they improve recovery, there may be better combinations for fa

Viral Shedding and Persistence of Anosmia and Ageusia in an Asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 Infection.

The novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), first identified in the region of Wuhan, China is responsible for the ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) that has been a part of our life for almost three years now. Although there have been multiple reports of prolonged viral shedding in people with severe disease, viral shedding lasting for extended periods can occur in patients with less serious clinical insults or even asymptomatic individuals. Herein, we report a case of a female patient that, although otherwise asymptomatic, remained positive on na

[Possible unregistered SARS-CoV-2 infection in a young man with anosmia and ageusia].

During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, testing of suspected cases in Denmark has recently been limited to those who were critically ill. This has left an increasing number of unregistered infections in the society, obscured quantification and impacted lived lives. This case story reports a possible mild SARS-CoV-2 infection in a healthy young man in his twenties. Due to strategic guidelines, he was never tested for SARS-CoV-2, but the medical record was highly suspicious for infection. Besides the well-known symptoms of SARS-CoV-2, this case also reports total anosmia and ageusia.

Geographical Variations in Host Predisposition to COVID-19 Related Anosmia, Ageusia, and Neurological Syndromes.

The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), has become the most critical global health challenge in recent history. With SARS-CoV-2 infection, there was an unexpectedly high and specific prevalence of olfactory and taste disorders (OTDs). These high rates of hyposmia and hypogeusia, initially reported as up to 89% in European case series, led to the global inclusion of loss of taste and/or smell as a distinctive feature of COVID-19. However, there is emerging evidence that there are striking differences in the rates of OTDs in East Asian countries where the disease first emerged, as compared to

New-onset anosmia and ageusia in adult patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the prevalence of anosmia and ageusia in adult patients with a laboratory-confirmed diagnosis of infection with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). METHODS: This was a retrospective observational analysis of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 admitted to hospital or managed in the community and their household contacts across a London population during the period March 1st to April 1st, 2020. Symptomatology and duration were extracted from routinely collected clinical data and follow-up telephone consultations. Descriptive statisti

Can photobiomodulation restore anosmia and ageusia induced by COVID-19? A pilot clinical study.

Along with other COVID-19 clinical manifestations, management of both olfactory and gustatory dysfunction have drawn a considerable attention. Photobiomodulation (PBM) has emerged to be a possible effective therapy in restoring taste and smell functionality, but the evidence is scarce. Hence, the present pilot study is aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of intranasal and intraoral PBM administrations in management of anosmia and ageusia respectively. Twenty Caucasian subjects who diagnosed with anosmia and ageusia were recruited. Visual analogue scale was utilised to evaluate patients' self-r

Headache, anosmia, ageusia and other neurological symptoms in COVID-19: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Neurological symptoms are frequent among patients with COVID-19. Little is known regarding the repercussions of neurological symptoms for patients and how these symptoms are related to one another. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether there is an association between the neurological symptoms in patients with COVID-19, and to characterize the headache. METHOD: This was a cross-sectional study. All hospital inpatients and health workers at the Hospital Universitario Oswaldo Cruz with a PCR-confirmed COVID-19 infection between March and June 2020 were considered for the study and were i

Assessment of the Early Detection of Anosmia and Ageusia Symptoms in COVID-19 on Twitter: Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: During the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, social media has been extensively used to amplify the spread of information and to express personal health-related experiences regarding symptoms, including anosmia and ageusia, 2 symptoms that have been reported later than other symptoms. OBJECTIVE: Our objective is to investigate to what extent Twitter users reported anosmia and ageusia symptoms in their tweets and if they connected them to COVID-19, to evaluate whether these symptoms could have been identified as COVID-19 symptoms earlier using Twitter rather than the official notice.
