This article describes a form of localized aggressive periodontitis (LAP) in young multiparous women and denotes this form of periodontitis as localized aggressive multiparous periodontitis (LAMP). The authors retrospectively reviewed six cases of LAP in healthy multiparous women who were followed clinically for more than five years, examining clinical histories, clinical findings, and radiographic features. Age, race, gender, parity, location of attachment loss, rate of attachment loss, and symptoms were recorded. LAMP is characterized by asymmetrical attachment loss along the distal proximal

Patients with aggressive periodontitis can be both rewarding and frustrating to treat in clinical practice. Interindividual variation in response to therapy can be widespread, and we do not clearly understand the reasons for this variable response. It is possible that new research into the resolution of inflammation may reveal basic differences between patients with chronic periodontitis and those with aggressive disease. In addition, future research involving modulation of host inflammatory responses may clarify the reasons for the differences in clinical outcomes between patients. We think i

Periodontitis is a common inflammatory disease causing destruction of periodontal tissues. It is a multifactor disease involving genetic factors and oral environmental factors. To determine genetic risk factors associated with aggressive periodontitis or severe chronic periodontitis, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in multiple candidate genes were investigated in Japanese. We studied 134 patients with aggressive periodontitis, 117 patients with severe chronic periodontitis, and 125 healthy volunteers without periodontitis, under case-control setting, and 310 SNPs in 125 candidate genes

OBJECTIVES: Vitamin D deficiency is a frequent health problem worldwide, especially as fewer people spend much time in the sun. Vitamin D deficiency is linked to several infectious and inflammatory conditions, including periodontal disease. However, its role in aggressive periodontitis (AgP) has not been well studied. We evaluated the association between vitamin D concentration and periodontal disease, both AgP and chronic (CP) periodontitis.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: Forty-seven AgP 55 CP and 27 control subjects participated. All patients were tested for serum vitamin D concentration (25(OH)D),

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D is associated with a number of inflammatory diseases and plays a significant role in regulating bone metabolism. Serum calcifediol was demonstrated to be potentially associated with periodontal disease. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether an association exists between plasma calcifediol concentrations and aggressive periodontitis (AgP) and whether plasma levels of bone-related biomarkers (osteocalcin, alkaline phosphatase, calcium, and phosphorus) regulated by vitamin D are related to AgP.
METHODS: Sixty-six patients with generalized AgP, 52 patients with c

BACKGROUND: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of host-derived proteinases reported to mediate multiple functions associated with periodontal destruction and inflammation. Most of the existing data have been gathered from adults with chronic periodontitis. The purpose of this study was to determine the MMP levels in a cohort of African American children with and without aggressive periodontitis.
METHODS: Gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) was collected in a cohort of 44 African American children, 7 to 19 years of age, with and without aggressive periodontitis (AgP) and compared to hea

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Certain types of chronic infection increase the plasma level of very-low-density lipoprotein, leading to formation of the particularly atherogenic low-density lipoprotein subclass, small dense low-density lipoprotein. In the present study, we examined whether aggressive forms of periodontitis are associated with these atherogenic lipoprotein parameters.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twelve healthy control subjects without periodontitis, 12 subjects with localized aggressive periodontitis and 12 subjects with generalized aggressive periodontitis were studied. Lipoprotein subc

UNLABELLED: With advances in periodontal therapy, many sufferers from aggressive periodontitis are retaining their teeth after successful treatment. This presents the practitioner with aesthetic and restorative challenges in these relatively young patients. Lifelong motivation is essential to the supportive therapy for these patients, and the maintenance of good aesthetics, combined with biologically acceptable corrective therapy, may help maintain a high level of motivation. Any treatment provided must naturally be conducive to maintaining long-term dental and periodontal health. This paper a

BACKGROUND: Aggressive and necrotic periodontal diseases may occasionally be associated with undiagnosed systemic diseases and immune deficiencies. We present a 35-year-old man with an undiagnosed hypo-gammaglobulinaemia and severe aggressive periodontitis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Gingival biopsies and peripheral blood were collected for immunohistochemical and cell culture studies from the patient with aggressive periodontitis, 3 patients with chronic periodontitis and 3 controls. Mast cells and neutrophils were visualised and counted on histological sections. Freshly isolated monocytes were c

There is strong evidence that genetic as well as environmental factors affect the development of periodontitis, and some suggestion that aggressive and chronic forms of the disease share the same genetic predisposition. This study addresses the hypothesis that there are both shared and unique genetic associations in these forms of periodontitis. A sample of 51 patients with aggressive disease, 57 patients with chronic disease, and 100 healthy controls was recruited for this study. Ten functional polymorphisms in 7 candidate genes were genotyped. The results show statistically significant (p <o

BACKGROUND: Genetic polymorphisms for interleukin (IL)-1alpha and -1beta have been proposed as potential genetic markers for periodontal diseases. Since the prevalence of these polymorphisms could be race-related, and no data exist about the frequency of these polymorphisms in the Chilean population, the aim of the current study was to investigate the association of the interleukin-1 gene polymorphisms with aggressive periodontitis (AgP).
METHODS: Thirty-six patients with AgP, 75 healthy controls, and 75 subjects of unknown periodontal status (reference population) were genotyped for the IL-1

BACKGROUND: There are four key studies in the periodontology literature reporting the correlation between supernumerary teeth and aggressive periodontitis. The aim of this study is to detect such a relationship.
METHODS: Patients with supernumerary teeth were identified retrospectively from their orthopantomographs and were invited to the periodontology department for intraoral examination. They were then evaluated for aggressive periodontitis. The number of existing teeth, age, family histories, attachment loss, probing depths, and bleeding on probing scores were recorded.
RESULTS: Of the 5

BACKGROUND: In both states of health and disease, the integrity of connective tissue along with regulation in formation of bones are well maintained by periostin (POSTN) which is a matricellular protein secreted by fibroblasts. The present study aimed to assess the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) POSTN levels in patients with chronic periodontitis (CP) and aggressive periodontitis and to compare them with that of healthy controls.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 39 individuals were recruited and allocated into the healthy group, and two periodontitis groups (the chronic and the aggressive t

OBJECTIVE: It has been reported that caries prevalence in patients with aggressive periodontitis (ie, juvenile periodontitis) might be higher than that in matched controls. However, the available results are inconclusive. The aim of this study was to assess this relationship by comparing caries experience among subjects with generalized aggressive periodontitis (AgP) and those with chronic periodontitis (CP) and to identify reasons for tooth loss in both groups.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: A convenient sample of subjects with AgP (210) and CP (332) was evaluated for decayed, missing, and filled tee
