Place of Death in Canada: An Analysis of the Decedent Questionnaire of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the factors associated with the place of death is important for planning individual care and health care services. OBJECTIVES: To determine the place of death of community-living Canadians in a cohort study; and to investigate the factors associated with the location of death. DESIGN: The Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) is a prospective cohort study of aging which commenced in 2010, with a sample of 51,338 community-living participants aged 45-85. There were 1287 participants with completed proxy decedent questionnaires. SETTING: The original sampling f

Caregiver Perspectives of Aging in Place with Dementia: A Qualitative Exploration of Barriers Using the Social Ecological Model.

Most persons living with dementia in Canada reside at home, relying on support from family and/or friends as caregivers. Evidentially, knowledge gaps exist when trying to understand how caregivers and persons living with dementia can be better supported in their community and health care environments. This research examined the effect of aging in place with a focus on providing a comprehensive understanding of the barriers to aging in place for persons living with dementia and their caregivers using the social-ecological model. Fourteen caregivers were recruited to participate in one-on-one se

Aging in the Right Place for Older Adults Experiencing Housing Insecurity: An Environmental Assessment of Temporary Housing Program.

Research on programs offering senior-specific housing supports and enabling "aging in the right place" (AIRP) for "older persons with experiences of homelessness" (OPEH) is limited. This paper presents an environmental assessment of a "transitional housing program" (THP) in Metro Vancouver, Canada, for OPEH to AIRP. Data were collected using Aging in the Right Place Environmental (AIRP-ENV) and Secondary Observation (AIRP-ENV-SO) audit tools designed to evaluate multi-unit housing for OPEH. The 241-item AIRP-ENV tool was used to assess the built environmental features of four multi-unit buildi

Place integration through efforts to support healthy aging in resource frontier communities: the role of voluntary sector leadership.

Resource-dependent communities in hinterland regions of Australia, Canada and elsewhere are rapidly aging, yet many features that distinguish them (e.g., geographic remoteness, small populations, infrastructure built with younger persons in mind) also pose significant challenges for healthy aging. These challenges can lead to substantial gaps in access to formal health and social services, with negative implications for older residents aging-in-place and the development aspirations of resource frontier communities. In this paper, we explore the efforts of voluntary sector leaders to transform

Everyday Access and Rural Aging in Place: A Mixed-Methods Study of Applied Gerontological Intervention Priorities in South Korea.

Background/Objectives: Everyday access to essential services is an important consideration for rural aging in place. This study examined multidomain access barriers and identified applied gerontological intervention priorities in rural South Korea. Methods: A quantitatively driven convergent mixed-methods design combined face-to-face survey data from 200 residents across one township center and eight outlying townships with a focus group involving three community welfare council members. Survey analyses described transportation, healthcare, walkability, digital access, safety, and community-ca

Intergenerational Understandings of Ageing in Place: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Study.

Population ageing poses global challenges, positioning Ageing in Place (AIP) as a preferred strategy to support ageing in later life. In the Chinese context, the role of adult children in supporting AIP is particularly salient due to the cultural value of filial piety. However, limited research has examined how AIP is experienced and interpreted by both older adults and adult children within this cultural framework. This study aims to explore and compare the lived experiences of older adults and adult children in relation to AIP in urban China, with a particular focus on intergenerational unde

Heterogeneity in the associations of community gathering place participation with healthy ageing.

BACKGROUND: Extending healthy life expectancy is a critical policy priority in aging societies worldwide. In Japan, community gathering places (CGPs) for older adults, which are resident-led group activities conducted in accessible local spaces. While prior studies have suggested benefits of CGPs participation, most evidence is limited to single municipalities. The potential heterogeneity in benefits across sociodemographic subgroups remains unclear. METHODS: We analyzed data from 55,982 community-dwelling older adults aged 65 years or older across 21 municipalities participating in the Japan

Pacing and placing in 161-km ultramarathons: Effects of sex and age.

Ultramarathons are growing in popularity, owing especially to the participation of women and masters athletes. Pacing strategy, which can vary by sex and age, is a critical variable in determining finishing place in races up to the marathon distance. Whether this is true in 161-km ultramarathons is unclear. We tested the hypotheses that pacing is a determining factor in finishing place and that pacing differs by sex and age in 161-km ultramarathons. Publicly available data from 161-km races (n = 6) were analyzed for years 2012-2022 (n = 56). Linear regression was used to analyze the proportion

Factors Associated with the Acceptance of New Technologies for Ageing in Place by People over 64 Years of Age.

BACKGROUND: In the context of growing population ageing, technologies aimed at helping people age in place play a fundamental role. Acceptance of the implementation of technological solutions can be defined as the intention to use a technology or the effective use of it. Approaches based on the technology acceptance model (TAM) have been shown to have good predictive power for pre-implementation attitudes towards new technologies. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the degree of acceptability of the use of new technologies for ageing in place and the factors associated with greater acceptance in people ol

Experiences of aging in place in the United States: protocol for a systematic review and meta-ethnography of qualitative studies.

BACKGROUND: By 2035, older adults will outnumber children for the first time in the United States (US). In light of its aging population, the US has supported services focused on enabling older adults to continue living in their current homes, a model commonly described as "aging in place." The lived experience of aging in place is not well documented in existing systematic reviews. The aims of this systematic review are to synthesize and evaluate the existing qualitative evidence on experiences of aging in place in the US and identify knowledge gaps and directions for future studies. "You Need to Keep It Going, Mind, Body, and Spirit": Older Adults' Perspectives on Aging in Place in Subsidized Housing.

In the U.S., more than one million older adults with low incomes live in apartment buildings subsidized by the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit. Although this population experiences disproportionate rates of nursing home admission, little is known about residents' perspectives on factors that influence their ability to live independently in these settings. Fifty-eight residents aged 62 and older and eight study partners participated in qualitative interviews about their perspectives on living independently in subsidized housing, including barriers and facilitators. We analyzed transcripts using a

Non-medical barriers and facilitators of ageing in place: a cohort study in the Netherlands.

Most western countries lack the capacity to maintain institutional care levels for the ageing baby boom generation. To date, the non-medical drivers of the decision to "age in place" versus using expensive institutional long-term care (LTC) have not been comprehensively studied. This study, based on data from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam, aims to better understand why some individuals, with comparable medical needs, decide or are able to remain living independently longer than others. The sample included a representative cohort of Dutch adults aged 58 and older (n = 1,792), followed f

Models of care across settings supporting ageing in place: a narrative review.

Older people's preference is to age in place. With an ageing population, the demand for services that are effective in supporting older people to live at home independently has increased dramatically. This narrative review provides an overview of recent evidence of models of care in the aged and community care and health care sectors that contribute to supporting older people (≥ 65 years) to age in place (ie, delay or avoid entry into residential long term care). Overall, there is limited evidence for the identified models of care about the outcome of ageing in place, but there is evidence of

Age at diagnosis for autism spectrum disorders: Does it differ by place of residence?

BACKGROUND: Despite steady decline in the age of diagnosis (AOD) at the global level, it has not declined uniformly, and marked disparities are documented by income, education, race, and access to health care. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the study are to examine the urban/rural disparities in the initial age of autism diagnosis and to understand the interplay of the underlying demographic and social factors. METHODS: A retrospective case record review of all children who received their initial diagnosis of autism at the Pediatric Psychology Clinic (1997-2018) of a tertiary advanced pediatr

Hay fever holiday: health, leisure, and place in Gilded-Age America.

By the 1880s hay fever (also called June Cold, Rose Cold, hay asthma, hay cold, or autumnal catarrh) had become the pride of America's leisure class. In mid-August each year, thousands of sufferers fled to the White Mountains of New Hampshire, to the Adirondacks in upper New York State, to the shores of the Great Lakes, or to the Colorado plateau, hoping to escape the dreaded seasonal symptoms of watery eyes, flowing nose, sneezing fits, and attacks of asthma, which many regarded as the price of urban wealth and education. Through a focus on the White Mountains as America's most fashionable ha

Developing a Multi-Directional Lower-Limb Training System Toward Aging in Place Rehabilitation: A Preliminary Feasibility Study on Healthy Individuals.

Not only improving muscle strength but also improving muscle power and neuromuscular control are important factors in improving lower limb function. In this study, a multi-directional lower-limb training system for aging -in-place rehabilitation was developed. The training system offers four distinct modes: muscle power training, pivoting neuromuscular training, muscle strength training using eccentric contractions, and proprioception training with evaluation. The feasibility of the training system was assessed through experiments conducted on healthy adults. Parameters such as mean of electro

Community-based interventions to support aging in place and functional independence in older adults: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: As the global population ages, ensuring the autonomy and wellbeing of older adults living at home has become increasingly important. Supporting independence is central to aging in place, which requires access to appropriate health and social resources. In this context, community-based public health interventions may play an important role in addressing physical, cognitive, and psychosocial challenges associated with aging. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to synthesize evidence from randomized controlled trials examining community-based public health interventions that prom

Excess Synaptojanin 1 Contributes to Place Cell Dysfunction and Memory Deficits in the Aging Hippocampus in Three Types of Alzheimer's Disease.

The phosphoinositide phosphatase synaptojanin 1 (SYNJ1) is a key regulator of synaptic function. We first tested whether SYNJ1 contributes to phenotypic variations in familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD) and show that SYNJ1 polymorphisms are associated with age of onset in both early- and late-onset human FAD cohorts. We then interrogated whether SYNJ1 levels could directly affect memory. We show that increased SYNJ1 levels in autopsy brains from adults with Down syndrome (DS/AD) are inversely correlated with synaptophysin levels, a direct readout of synaptic integrity. We further report age-dep

Implementing Aging in Place in Hong Kong: Meeting the Needs and Aspirations of Older Adults and Their Caregivers Living in Private Housing.

A policy of aging in place should be accompanied by physical and social environments that support healthy aging. This article describes how a property development company in Hong Kong sought to elicit the views of older people and their caregivers towards elderly services through a market research company, using questionnaire surveys followed by focus groups. Over 80% of all participants rated healthy dietary habits and exercise, maintaining mental and spiritual health, and maintaining a generally healthy lifestyle as important. Current health concerns include long waiting times for care at pu
