Nanopolysaccharides in agriculture. Advances, applications, and future prospects: a review.

Nanopolysaccharides (NPSs) constitute a rapidly advancing class of biodegradable and biocompatible nanomaterials with strong potential to support sustainable, climate-resilient agriculture. NPSs exhibit high surface area, tunable surface chemistry, and enhanced interactions with biological interfaces, enabling multifunctional roles across soil-plant-microbe systems. This review provides a function-guided synthesis of recent advances in NPS-based agricultural applications, structured around ten interconnected functional domains. These include: (i) structural classes of NPSs and their surface-ch

An endophytic bacterium Acinetobacter calcoaceticus Sasm3-enhanced phytoremediation of nitrate-cadmium compound polluted soil by intercropping Sedum alfredii with oilseed rape.

Intensive agricultural system with high input of fertilizer results in high agricultural output. However, excessive fertilization in intensive agricultural system has great potential to cause nitrate and heavy metal accumulation in soil, which is adverse to human health. The main objective of the present study was to observe the effects of intercropping and inoculation of endophytic bacterium Acinetobacter calcoaceticus Sasm3 on phytoremediation of combined contaminated soil in oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.). The results showed that with Sasm3 inoculation, the biomass of rape was increased b

Hydrogel-encapsulated microalgae-bacteria consortia for resilient saline agriculture.

Soil salinization has emerged as a critical abiotic stressor threatening global food security, with salt-affected areas now exceeding 1.381 billion hectares. Although microbial inoculants represent a sustainable remediation alternative, their field performance is consistently limited by poor survival rates and community collapse under saline stress. This review proposes a spatially and functionally structured bio-strategy based on hydrogel encapsulated microalgae-bacteria consortia (MBC) for the restoration of saline-alkali soils. We mechanistically analyze how rationally designed hydrogel sca

Synthetic Microbial Communities Regulate Rhizosphere Microorganisms to Ameliorate Arid Farmland Soil and Improve Onion Growth across Growth Stages.

Although microbial inoculants exhibit plant-growth-promoting potential, their regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. Using absolute quantitative sequencing, we explored how the fermentation broth of synthetic microbial communities (SynComs) built from six strains modulated onion rhizosphere microecology throughout the growth period. SynComs broth elevated soil enzyme activities and available nutrients at specific growth stages. Absolute abundances of beneficial bacteria Nitrospira and Nocardioides increased in all stages, whereas pathogenic fungi Cladosporium and Alternaria decreased. Stochasti

Improving quality control of microbial agri-inputs by confirming strain identity with an easy and low-cost PCR-multiplex: A study case with Azospirillum brasilense.

The first commercial product containing the Azospirillum brasilense elite strains Ab-V5 and Ab-V6 was launched in Brazil in 2009. These strains have demonstrated agronomic efficiency in grasses and in legume co-inoculation, accounting for approximately 43 million doses in 2024. Official identification of these strains is currently performed by rep-PCR, a reliable but time-consuming and laborious method. In this study, a multiplex PCR assay was developed for the simultaneous identification of Ab-V5 and Ab-V6 in a single reaction using strain-specific SNPs. Forward primers were designed so that

Rhizosphere engineering 2.0: Predictive microbiome design for climate-resilient agriculture, sustainable food production, and global food security.

The rhizosphere is a dynamic interface among plant roots, soil, and microbiota, where the resident microbial community shapes plant health, ecosystem resistance and resilience, nutrient cycling, and sustainable crop production. Yet the limited efficacy of conventional microbial inoculants under field conditions - reflecting poor persistence of introduced microorganisms, incomplete mechanistic understanding of plant-microbiome signalling, and high context-dependence across soils and climates - has created a need for predictive, rather than empirical, microbiome engineering. To close this gap, w

Rice straw returning to the field on soil microbial interactions, soil fertility improvement, and carbon sequestration for CO2 emission reduction.

Rice straw is rich in organic matter and essential nutrients, an important resource for improving soil fertility and enzyme activity. However, its high carbon-nitrogen ratio leads to slow decomposition, affecting nutrient transformation efficiency. The small molecular carbohydrates released during microbial enzymolysis not only serve as an energy source but may also act as signaling molecules, participating in the regulation of soil microbial community structure and plant root development. This review discusses the effects of straw return to the field on soil organic carbon (SOC) stability, mi

Role of plant nutritional balance under combined abiotic stress conditions, and stress mitigation strategies.

Climate change is increasing the frequency of extreme temperature events, irregular rainfall patterns and periods of water deficit, which alter soil properties and limit crop performance. These factors often occur simultaneously with other adverse conditions, generating multifactorial stress scenarios that pose a major challenge for agricultural systems. This review examines the reduction and degradation of cropland during the first quarter of the 21st century. Despite this trend, global agricultural productivity has increased in recent decades, largely due to improved knowledge of crop nutrit

Roles of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria in mediating soil legacy phosphorus availability.

Phosphorus (P), an essential macronutrient for all life on Earth, has been shown to be a vital limiting nutrient element for plant growth and yield. P deficiency is a common phenomenon in terrestrial ecosystems across the world. Chemical phosphate fertilizer has traditionally been employed to solve the problem of P deficiency in agricultural production, but its application has been limited by the non-renewability of raw materials and the adverse influence on the ecological health of the environment. Therefore, it is imperative to develop efficient, economical, environmentally friendly and high

Inorganic nutrient utilisation by "adapted" Pseudomonas putida strain used in the bioremediation of agricultural soil polluted with crude petroleum.

Garden soil samples polluted with crude petroleum were bioremediated by inorganic nutrient monitoring with appropriate adjustment and inoculation with crude oil-adapted strain of Pseudomonasputida (PP) isolated from oil-impacted soils. Soil samples without PP inoculation served as the control samples to compare the abilities of the native soil microflora with the adapted PP strain in biodegrading crude oil pollutant. In the experimental samples, oil concentration and all the inorganic nutrient sources tested decreased more rapidly with a proportional increase in the population densities of bot

Harnessing PGPR inoculation through exogenous foliar application of salicylic acid and microbial extracts for improving rice growth.

Plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) should effectively colonize along the plant root to enhance the plant and soil health. The present investigation aims to improve the PGPR-mediated plant health benefits through above-ground foliar management. A green fluorescent protein-tagged PGPR strain, Pseudomonas chlororaphis (ZSB15-M2) was inoculated in a nonautoclaved agricultural soil before rice culturing. Salicylic acid and cell extracts of Corynebacterium glutamicum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a supply of hormonal and inducer compounds were applied on the foliage of the 10-days-old ric

Optimization of fermentation conditions for Metarhizium robertsii and its effect on rice growth.

UNLABELLED: Metarhizium robertsii ARSEF 23 is a significant insect-pathogenic fungus and plant-associated endophyte, with dual roles as an insect-control agent and plant growth-enhancing agent that have fueled its extensive use in agricultural practices. However, the growth-promoting impacts of M. robertsii (referred to as MAA) on rice, and their underlying mechanisms are still not fully clarified. This research verified the growth-enhancing effects of both MAA itself and its fermented supernatant on rice plants. By means of single-factor tests and response surface methodology, the fermentatio

Bacterial motility in rhizosphere colonization: mechanisms, constraints, and implications for microbial inoculants.

Although the potential of microbial inoculants for sustainable agriculture and environmental restoration has been widely recognized, their field performance remains highly variable and often unpredictable. Current research and development frameworks for microbial inoculants primarily focus on their plant growth-promoting functions and metabolic traits, often overlooking the ecological processes that determine whether introduced strains can successfully disperse, access, and establish within the rhizosphere. Increasing evidence suggests that successful dispersal and establishment cannot be assu
