Physicochemical, Bioactive and Technofunctional Properties of Instant Black Mashua Flour Processed by Extrusion and Drum Drying.

Black mashua (Tropaeolum tuberosum), also known as purple mashua, is an Andean plant with high nutritional and medicinal value. It has traditionally been used to treat prostate conditions. This study examined how the agroecological origin (Puno and Junín) and processing methods (extrusion and drum drying) affected the physicochemical, bioactive, and technofunctional properties of instant black mashua flour. Both factors were found to significantly influence the content of bioactive compounds and technofunctional behaviour of the flour. Although extrusion increased the content of total phenols,

Farming as food as medicine in Tanzania: reviving traditional knowledge for health, nutrition, and sustainability.

Tanzania faces a complex nutrition and public health challenge characterized by persistent undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and an increasing burden of diet-related non-communicable diseases. At the same time, traditional farming systems that historically supplied diverse, nutrient-dense foods are being weakened by urbanization, climate variability, market pressures, and dietary transitions. This narrative review examines farming as food as medicine in Tanzania by synthesizing literature on indigenous crops, agroecology, agrobiodiversity, dietary diversity, public health nutrition,

A randomized controlled trial combining house screening and insecticide-treated nets reduces malaria transmission in northwestern Ethiopia.

House screening (HS) of doors, eaves, and windows using wire-mesh has demonstrated potential in the integrated vector management of malaria. However, limited epidemiological data are available to guide its implementation across different ecological settings. In a 16-month randomized controlled trial (follow-up period) conducted across three agroecological areas (dry mountain, plateau highland, and semi-arid) in Jabi Tehnan district, northwestern Ethiopia, treatment houses were equipped with HS combined with insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), while control houses received ITNs only. The intervent

Pesticide and metabolite residue mixtures in subtropical agroecosystem soils: The inconvenient truth.

The presence and accumulation of multiple pesticide residues in soil threaten biodiversity and soil health, yet depth-resolved evidence on pesticide-metabolite mixtures in subtropical agroecosystems remains underexplored. Here, we present the most comprehensive paired-depth assessment of parent pesticides and metabolites in Indian soils to date. We analyzed 181 compounds (63 insecticides, 41 fungicides, 32 herbicides, 45 metabolites) in 140 paired surface (0-5 cm) and subsurface (15-20 cm) soil samples collected during the 2024 growing season from 70 sites representing major land uses in the H

Challenges and opportunities in generating and utilizing environmental data for sustainable food systems.

Modern agricultural production has detrimental effects on the environment including contributing toward current global climate and biodiversity crises. It is therefore necessary that our agroecosystems, and wider food systems, become sustainable, so that the growing population can be fed now and in the future. Agroecosystems are complex with multiple inputs, outputs and interactions, with consequent environmental effects and impacts. This complexity is mirrored in an equally complex "data ecosystem" that is utilized by different stakeholders to make decisions. New understanding and technologie

Biodegradable mulching and nitrogen fertilization differentially affect AM fungal community structure and functioning in a semi-arid maize agroecosystem.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are central to plant nutrient acquisition and soil functioning, yet how biodegradable mulching and nitrogen (N) fertilization jointly regulate AM fungal communities and maize productivity remains poorly understood. We conducted a factorial field experiment combining biodegradable mulching with five N fertilization rates ranging from 0 to 300 kg N ha⁻¹. Soil properties, plant nutrient status, AM fungal richness and community composition, root length colonization (RLC), and maize yield were assessed across the jointing, silking, and filling stages. N fertilizati

Molecular mimicry in the agroecosystem: A new paradigm for understanding how pesticide residues drive the emergence of antimicrobial resistance.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a mounting global crisis, with environmental dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) emerging as a critical driver. Agroecosystems, chronically exposed to complex mixtures of bioactive chemicals, including pesticides, represent an underrecognized hotspot for AMR evolution. This review synthesizes established mechanisms by which pesticides select for resistance and introduces a novel hypothesis: molecular mimicry as a hidden driver. Evidence highlights three key pathways: cross-resistance via multidrug efflux pumps; coselection on mobile genetic ele

Climate Change Impacts on Plant-Parasitic Nematodes in Agroecosystems.

Climate change significantly impacts agricultural ecosystems through rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, increasing atmospheric CO2 levels, and more frequent extreme weather events. These environmental changes have a pronounced effect on plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs; phylum Nematoda), which cause serious crop losses on a global scale. This review aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of current knowledge on how major climate change drivers influence the biology, population dynamics, host-plant interactions, and geographic distribution of PPNs in agricultural systems.

Omics Insights Into the Effects of Highbush Blueberry and Cranberry Crop Agroecosystems on Honey Bee Health and Physiology.

Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are vital pollinators in fruit-producing agroecosystems like highbush blueberry (HBB) and cranberry (CRA). However, their health is threatened by multiple interacting stressors, including pesticides, pathogens, and nutritional changes. We tested the hypothesis that distinct agricultural ecosystems-with different combinations of agrochemical exposure, pathogen loads, and floral resources-elicit ecosystem-specific, tissue-level molecular responses in honey bees. We conducted an integrated multi-omics analysis using RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq), proteomics, and gut microbi

Integrating airborne chemical ecology with informed intercropping for sustainable crop protection.

The role of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in plant-insect interactions has been studied in detail in recent decades, especially in the context of environment-friendly integrated pest management (IPM) in agroecosystems. Field-based study and behavioural investigations have shown that specific VOCs (or combinations of VOCs) of companion crops are crucial in diverting phytophagous insects from main food or cash crops, along with attracting beneficial insects which decimate pest species. The functional mechanisms of these olfactory cues, however, are not always clear and distinctive, especiall

Semi-Natural Habitats Buffer the Effects of Crop Diversification on Arthropod Pest Control Services in Agricultural Landscapes.

Crop diversification is a promising strategy to strengthen pest control services in agricultural landscapes. Diversifying crops may limit pests through host crop dilution or by enhancing top-down control by their enemies. However, crop diversification may also benefit generalist pests through higher resource continuity. Using a large-scale dataset encompassing 742 landscapes across 13 countries, we assessed the impact of landscape-scale crop diversity on the abundance of natural enemies, the potential for biological control, and insect pest abundance. Crop diversification did not increase the

[Impacts of climate change on the functioning and productivity of agroecosystems: a focus on the impact of interactions between CO2, temperature and water deficit].

Rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations and temperatures, as well as changes in water regimes, are major determinants of the functioning and productivity of agroecosystems. Although the individual effects of each of these factors have been extensively studied, their combined action remains poorly understood, despite the fact that these factors interact closely to shape future climate conditions. This article provides a synthesis of current knowledge on the combined impacts of rising CO2, temperatures and water deficiency on crop plants, with a particular focus on wheat. Following a review of the

Rice-crayfish farming mode drives distinct soil properties and ecological assembly of soil microbiome.

UNLABELLED: Rice-crayfish farming (RCF) system represents an effective ecological agricultural model characterized by the cyclical spatiotemporal integration of rice farming and crayfish aquaculture. However, the effects of farming mode and stage on soil microbial community structure over time remain insufficiently explored. In this study, we investigated taxonomic and functional changes in soil microbiomes and their associations with soil nutrient fertility in both RCF and rice monoculture (RM) systems. Our findings demonstrated that RCF significantly increased soil pH, total nitrogen (TN), a
