Ischemic cardiovascular disease in workers occupationally exposed to urban air pollution - A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular disease is the first cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Among several known risk factors, researchers also focus their attention on the chronic exposure to air pollution. There is much evidence that exposure to air pollution, especially to ultrafine particles, can damage the endothelium and can favour cardiovascular diseases in the general population. Occupational exposition could be an additive risk factor for the cardiovascular system. This article presents a scientific review of the linkage between occupational exposure to air pollution and ischemic hea

Indoor and outdoor air pollution and couple fecundability: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution is both a sensory blight and a threat to human health. Inhaled environmental pollutants can be naturally occurring or human-made, and include traffic-related air pollution (TRAP), ozone, particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds, among other substances, including those from secondhand smoking. Studies of air pollution on reproductive and endocrine systems have reported associations of TRAP, secondhand smoke (SHS), organic solvents and biomass fueled-cooking with adverse birth outcomes. While some evidence suggests that air pollution contributes to inferti

European Code against Cancer 4th Edition: Environment, occupation and cancer.

People are exposed throughout life to a wide range of environmental and occupational pollutants from different sources at home, in the workplace or in the general environment - exposures that normally cannot be directly controlled by the individual. Several chemicals, metals, dusts, fibres, and occupations have been established to be causally associated with an increased risk of specific cancers, such as cancers of the lung, skin and urinary bladder, and mesothelioma. Significant amounts of air pollutants - mainly from road transport and industry - continue to be emitted in the European Union

A systematic review of observational studies on long-term air pollution exposure and epigenetic alterations in adults.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that environmental exposures induce epigenetic modifications that can have long-lasting effects on multiple health outcomes, and an in-depth review of the epidemiological evidence is urgent. We aimed to comprehensively assess the associations between long-term exposure to air pollution and epigenetic changes in adults. METHODS: We systematically searched EMBASE, MEDLINE, and Web of Science databases for relevant articles published in English from inception through 17 November 2023. We assessed and narratively synthesised eligible studies on ambient (i.e. non-occu

Systemic inequalities in indoor air pollution exposure in London, UK.

UNLABELLED: Deprived communities in many cities are exposed to higher levels of outdoor air pollution, and there is increasing evidence of similar disparities for indoor air pollution exposure. There is a need to understand the drivers for this exposure disparity in order to develop effective interventions aimed at improving population health and reducing health inequities. With a focus on London, UK, this paper assembles evidence to examine why indoor exposure to PM2.5, NOx and CO may disproportionately impact low-income groups. In particular, five factors are explored, namely: housing locati

A new personal dosimeter for the monitoring of industrial pollutants.

A new passive sampling device (GASBADGE dosimeter) has been developed for personal/ambient monitoring of industrial air pollutants. Compact and convenient to use (no pump, wet chemicals, or length of stain estimation required, etc.), it may be either worn or used for area monitoring. The operating principle is based upon Fick's first law of diffusion. Analysis of the collection element after exposure yields the time-weighted (TWA) exposure concentration. Promising results have been obtained to date in controlled exposures with sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. Preliminary data also indicate

Susceptibility to air pollution effects on mortality in Seoul, Korea: a case-crossover analysis of individual-level effect modifiers.

Air pollution's mortality effects may differ by subpopulation; however, few studies have investigated this issue in Asia. We investigated susceptibility to air pollutants on total, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality in Seoul, Korea for the period 2000-2007. We applied time-stratified case-crossover analysis, which allows direct modeling of interaction terms, to estimate susceptibility based on sex, age, education, marital status, and occupation. An interquartile range increase in pollution was associated with odds ratios of 0.94 (95% confidence interval, 0.25-1.62), 2.27 (1.03-3.53), 1.

Non-sensitising air pollution at workplaces and adult-onset asthma in the beginning of this millennium.

PURPOSE: This case-control study was undertaken to elucidate the controversy concerning whether low-level, long-term exposure to non-sensitising air pollution at workplaces may cause asthma. METHODS: A case-control study of 192 adult-onset asthma cases aged 20-65 years and 323 controls was conducted in the southeast of Sweden. Cases were identified from computerised registers from the region, diagnosed 2000-2004 and diagnoses were confirmed via medical files. Referents were randomised from the population register of the region. Exposure was monitored by a 16-page questionnaire. Special attent

Knowledge, Perceptions, and Practices of Traffic Police Officers Towards Air Pollution in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: An Exploratory Study.

Traffic police officers represent a critical occupational group with high vulnerability to vehicular air pollution, a severe environmental health threat in rapidly urbanizing metropolises such as Addis Ababa. This cross-sectional study explored occupational exposure, protective practices, health risks, perceptions, and awareness of air-quality-associated health risks among 120 traffic police officers in Addis Ababa. The officers were mostly male (80%) and married (93.3%), with the majority (62.6%) having served for more than ten years. While vehicle emissions were consistently recognized as th

Occupational exposure and health risks of volatile organic compounds of hotel housekeepers: Field measurements of exposure and health risks.

Hotel housekeepers represent a large, low-income, predominantly minority, and high-risk workforce. Little is known about their exposure to chemicals, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This study evaluates VOC exposures of housekeepers, sources and factors affecting VOC levels, and provides preliminary estimates of VOC-related health risks. We utilized indoor and personal sampling at two hotels, assessed ventilation, and characterized the VOC composition of cleaning agents. Personal sampling of hotel staff showed a total target VOC concentration of 57 ± 36 µg/m3 (mean ± SD), about tw

Air pollutant emissions from kerosene space heaters.

Air pollutant emissions from portable convective and radiant kerosene space heaters were measured in an environmental chamber. Emission factors for nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and oxygen depletion are presented. The data suggest that the use of such heaters in residences can result in exposures to air pollutants in excess of ambient air quality standards and in some cases in excess of occupational health standards.

What is the Role of Air Pollution in Chronic Rhinosinusitis?

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a heterogeneous inflammatory disorder, and several environmental factors may be contributing to disease pathophysiology, including air pollutants. Tobacco smoke and occupational exposures also have been associated with CRS, and environmental exposures may contribute to the variability seen in disease endotype. Animal models that investigate the potential of air pollutants to induce chronic inflammation provide further insight into plausible triggers and modifiers of disease, including contributions to barrier disruption, alterations in the microbiome, and immune

Reanalysis of the Harvard Six Cities Study, part II: sensitivity analysis.

Following the validation and replication of the Harvard Six Cities Study (Krewski et al., this issue), we conducted a wide range of sensitivity analyses to explore the observed associations between long-term exposure to fine particle or sulfate air pollution and mortality. We examined the impact of alternative risk models on estimates of risk, taking into account covariates not included in the original analyses. These risk models provided a basis for identifying covariates that may confound or modify the association between fine particle or sulfate air pollution and mortality, and for identify

Emissions of chemical compounds and bioaerosols during the secondary treatment of paper mill effluents.

This study identified and quantified the main chemical compounds--the substances responsible for the disagreeable odors--and the bioaerosols emitted during the biological treatment of paper mill effluents. It also identified the characteristics of the process that effects the generation or diffusion of these substances. All treatment stages were evaluated. Measuring sites were located as closely as possible to the potential emission sources. Measurements were taken in the summer in 11 paper mills during a 2- to 3-day period in each mill. Chemical compounds were evaluated by direct-reading inst

Air contaminants encountered by firefighters.

The concentrations of eight air contaminants suspected of causing acute and chronic health problems for firefighters were measured in over 200 fires in the City of Boston using a personal air sampler. Threatening concentrations of both carbon monoxide and acrolein were found in a small proportion of the fires. Less hazardous levels of hydrogen chloride, hydrogen cyanide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon dioxide were also noted. Benzene was found in most fires, but at concentrations well below those expected to cause acute injury. The air sampling data have application in treatment of smoke inhalati

Occupational and environmental exposures and cancers in developing countries.

BACKGROUND: Over the past few decades, there has been a decline in cancers attributable to environmental and occupational carcinogens of asbestos, arsenic, and indoor and outdoor air pollution in high-income countries. For low- to middle-income countries (LMICs), however, these exposures are likely to increase as industrialization expands and populations grow. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to review the evidence on the cancer risks and burdens of selected environmental and occupational exposures in less-developed economies. FINDINGS: A causal association has been established between a
