Patterns of household concentrations of multiple indoor air pollutants in China.

Most previous studies on indoor air pollution from household use of solid fuels have used either indirect proxies for human exposure or measurements of individual pollutants at a single point, as indicators of (exposure to) the mixture of pollutants in solid fuel smoke. A heterogeneous relationship among pollutant-location pairs should be expected because specific fuel-stove technology and combustion and dispersion conditions such as temperature, moisture, and air flow are likely to affect the emissions and dispersion of the various pollutants differently. We report on a study for monitoring m

The emerging role of outdoor and indoor air pollution in cardiovascular disease.

Outdoor and indoor air pollution poses a significant cardiovascular risk, and has been associated with atherosclerosis, the main underlying pathology in many cardiovascular diseases. Although, it is well known that exposure to air pollution causes pulmonary disease, recent studies have shown that cardiovascular health consequences of air pollution generally equal or exceed those due to pulmonary diseases. The objective of this article is to evaluate the current evidence on the emerging role of environmental air pollutions in cardiovascular disease, with specific focus on the types of air pollu

Indoor air pollution and the lung in low- and medium-income countries.

Over half the world's population, mostly from developing countries, use solid fuel for domestic purposes and are exposed to very high concentrations of harmful air pollutants with potential health effects such as respiratory problems, cardiovascular problems, infant mortality and ocular problems. The evidence also suggests that, although the total percentage of people using solid fuel is decreasing, the absolute number is currently increasing. Exposure to smoke from solid fuel burning increases the risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer in adults, and acute lower

Indoor air pollution and lung cancer in Guangzhou, People's Republic of China.

A case-control study comprising 224 male and 92 female incident lung cancer cases and the same number of individually matched hospital controls was conducted from June 1983 to June 1984 in Guangzhou, People's Republic of China, to evaluate the association between indoor air pollution and lung cancer risk. Guangzhou residents were exposed to several sources of pollution in their homes, most importantly to cooking fumes. Increased risks were found among subjects living in a house without a separate kitchen (the exposure odds ratio was 2.4 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.4-4.2) for men and 5.9 (9

Indoor air pollution due to tobacco smoke under real conditions. Preliminary results.

A short review exploring the generation and composition of tobacco smoke is given. Experimental arrangements used to record sidestream smoke are critically discussed. Data from own experiments in a tobacco smoke polluted office room were presented and discussed. These data include nicotine, ammonia, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide, CO, NO and NO2. First results about the diameter of the particles in the smoke polluted room were also given. By the aid of the RINGOLD's equation the COHB content on basis of the CO-values of exhaled breath of active and passive smokers were determined

Ozone Differentiated Sensitization of TMO-SnO2 Sensors for Indoor Air Pollution Monitoring.

Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors are promising in indoor air pollution monitoring, which however are still struggling to balance sensitivity and selectivity. In this study, transition metal oxide (TMO) modified SnO2 sensing materials are synthesized through a simple coprecipitation method. The sensitivity and selectivity are both modulated by ozone toward the typical indoor air pollutants, such as p-xylene and formaldehyde as analytes and ethanol as an interferent. The TMO modification enriches surface active sites, resulting in a nearly 5-fold performance enhancement versus pristin

Air Pollution, Pollen, and Indoor Exposures in Allergic Conjunctivitis: A Systematic Review.

Environmental exposures are increasingly recognized as important drivers of ocular surface inflammation, yet their combined contribution to the onset, exacerbation, and clinical burden of allergic conjunctivitis (AC) has not been comprehensively synthesized. This systematic review evaluated the evidence linking air pollutants, aeroallergens, and indoor or occupational exposures with allergic conjunctivitis. The review was conducted according to PRISMA 2020 and AMSTAR-2 guidelines and registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251162399). PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched from inception to 18

Socioeconomic disparities in mortality from indoor air pollution: A multi-country study.

BACKGROUND: Indoor air pollution is a major public health concern, contributing to approximately 2.9 million deaths and 81.1 million disability-adjusted life years lost annually. This issue disproportionately affects underprivileged communities that depend on solid fuels for cooking. As a result, these communities suffer from heightened exposure to indoor air pollutants, which increases the risk of morbidity, mortality, and worsening health disparities. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the association between socioeconomic status and mortality related to indoor air pollution across multiple

Indoor Air Pollution and Susceptibility to Tuberculosis Infection in Urban Vietnamese Children.

Rationale: The Southeast Asian tuberculosis burden is high, and it remains unclear if urban indoor air pollution in this setting is exacerbating the epidemic. Objectives: To determine the associations of latent tuberculosis with common urban indoor air pollution sources (secondhand smoke, indoor motorcycle emissions, and cooking) in Southeast Asia. Methods: We enrolled child household contacts of patients with microbiologically confirmed active tuberculosis in Vietnam, from July 2017 to December 2019. We tested children for latent tuberculosis and evaluated air pollution exposures with questio

Long-term exposure to indoor air pollution and wheezing symptoms in infants.

Long-term exposure to air pollution is suspected to cause recurrent wheeze in infants. The few previous studies have had ambiguous results. The objective of this study was to estimate the impact of measured long-term exposure to indoor air pollution on wheezing symptoms in infants. We monitored wheezing symptoms in diaries for a birth cohort of 411 infants. We measured long-term exposure to nitrogen oxides (NO(x)), NO(2), formaldehyde, PM(2.5) and black smoke in the infants' bedrooms and analyzed risk associations during the first 18 months of life by logistic regression with the dichotomous e

Indoor air pollution levels in public buildings in Thailand and exposure assessment.

Levels of pollutants including PM2.5 and PM2.5 composition (black carbon and water soluble ions), SO(2), NO(2), CO, CO(2), and BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene) were monitored for indoor and outdoor air at a university campus and a shopping center, both located in the Northern suburb of Bangkok. Sampling was done during December 2005-February 2006 on both weekdays and weekends. At the university, indoor monitoring was done in two different air conditioned classrooms which shows the I/O ratios for all pollutants to be below 0.5-0.8 during the weekends. However, on weekdays the ratio

Indoor cooking and cleaning as a source of outdoor air pollution in urban environments.

Indoor sources of air pollution, such as from cooking and cleaning, play a key role in indoor gas-phase chemistry. The focus of the impact of these activities on air quality tends to be indoors, with less attention given to the impact on air quality outside buildings. This study uses the INdoor CHEmical Model in Python (INCHEM-Py) and the Advanced Dispersion Modelling System (ADMS) to quantify the impact cooking and cleaning have on indoor and outdoor air quality for an idealised street of houses. INCHEM-Py has been developed to determine the concentrations of 106 indoor volatile organic compo

Indoor air pollution is associated with respiratory symptoms in children in urban Vietnam.

Exposure to indoor air pollution (IAP) is a leading environmental risk for respiratory diseases. We investigated the relationship between respiratory symptoms and polluting indoor activities such as smoking, cooking and contact with pets among children in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam. A cross-sectional survey applied a multistage sampling method in 24 randomly selected secondary schools across the city. Approximately 15,000 students completed self-administrated questionnaires on risk factors and respiratory health outcomes within the preceding 12 months. Data were analyzed using a multivar

Impact of indoor air pollution in nursery and primary schools on childhood asthma.

Poor indoor air quality in scholar environments have been frequently reported, but its impact on respiratory health in schoolchildren has not been sufficiently explored. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the associations between children's exposure to indoor air pollution (IAP) in nursery and primary schools and childhood asthma. Multivariate models (independent and multipollutant) quantified the associations of children's exposure with asthma-related health outcomes: reported active wheezing, reported and diagnosed asthma, and lung function (reduced FEV1/FVC and reduced FEV1). From air to mind: unraveling the impact of indoor pollutants on psychiatric disorders.

Epidemiological evidence from the past 20 years indicates that environmental chemicals brought into the air by the vaporization of volatile organic compounds and other anthropogenic pollutants might be involved, at least in part, in the development or progression of psychiatric disorders. This evidence comes primarily from occupational work studies in humans, with indoor occupations being the most important sources of airborne pollutants affecting neural circuits implicated in mood disorders (e.g., major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder). The current mini review brings together recent

Impact of indoor Air Pollution on the Linear growth of children in Jimma, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Stunting in children is the term for reduced linear growth and development, which is frequently brought on by a persistently inadequate diet, recurrent infections and chronic diseases or poor health conditions. Apart from the classic covariates of stunting, which include diet and illness, the relative contribution of household air pollution to chronic nutrition conditions is least studied. Hence, this study is conducted to investigate the impact of household air pollution on the linear growth of under-five children in Jimma town, Ethiopia. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was e
