An emaciated, moribund, male blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) was collected in Georgia (USA) and died shortly after capture. Necropsy revealed nine large nematodes identified as Diplotriaena tricuspis in the thoracic and abdominal air sacs and within the pericardial sac. Multiple mycotic granulomas also were observed in the lungs and air sacs, and fungal culture of these lesions yielded pure growth of Aspergillus fumigatus. Histologic examination of the lungs revealed disseminated granulomatous inflammation containing both larvated nematode eggs and abundant fungal hyphae. This is the first desc

Disseminated aspergillosis due to Aspergillus terreus was diagnosed in a young pigeon kept by a bird fancier. The fungus was isolated in heavy growth from the infected tissues on Sabouraud medium at 37 degrees C. Microscopic examination of the squeeze preparation of the air sacs revealed the presence of typical conidiophores of an Aspergillus sp. Histologically, branched, septate hyphae morphologically indistinguishable from Aspergillus were detected in the air sacs and lungs. The clinical, mycological and pathological findings are discussed. The role of A. terreus as an opportunistic pathogen

An adaptor for continuous stimulation of the facial nerve (SACS) to be used with the WR-S8 Monitor/Stimulator during otologic surgery has been developed. This device allows the surgeon to use the electrified air drill and microsurgical instruments instead of a probe-tip during dissection. The SACS saves surgical time, is easy and convenient to use, and is safe. Routine monitoring of facial nerve function using SACS has helped prevent iatrogenic facial nerve injuries and has improved our ability to save the facial nerve during otologic and neurotologic surgery.

A sequence of outbreaks of respiratory disease separated by intervals of about 2 wk occurred on three turkey breeder ranches. The last two ranches affected belonged to different companies and were separated by a distance of 11 km. Mortality on the last ranch was particularly severe among certain segregated groups of turkeys that included toms, heavier birds, and birds undergoing a stressful event such as artificial insemination. On this ranch, percentages of mortality within an 18-day period were 5.2% in toms, 2.4% in hens, 7.4% in heavy toms and 5.4% in heavy hens. Turkeys from 27 to 42 wk of

Wildlife conservation law in Costa Rica protects common motmots (Momotus momota), limiting the specimens available to study their health and biology. This report describes the finding of the trematode Circumvitellatrema momota in the trachea, air sacs, lung, and celomatic cavity of two free-living M. momota. Histiocytic air sacculitis and pleuritis with granulomas containing trematodes, as well as adhesions between the air sacs and pericardium, were observed. In addition, histiocytic pneumonia, air sacculitis, celomitis, ulcerative tracheitis, and necrotizing histiocytic hepatitis showing intr

Following the discovery of flight motor-driven unidirectional gas exchange with rising PO2 in the blowfly, X-ray computed tomography (CT) was used to visualize the organization of the tracheal system in the anterior body with emphasis on the arrangement of the pathways for airflow. The fly's head is preferentially supplied by cephalic tracheae originating from the ventral orifice of the mesothoracic spiracle (Sp1). The respiratory airflow during flight is a by-product of cyclic deformations of the thoracic box by the flight muscles. The air sacs below the tergal integument (scutum and scutell

Aquatic larvae belonging to the genus Chaoborus are the only truly pelagic insects, possessing the ability to regulate their buoyancy and position in the water column by using two pairs of closed, air-filled sacs derived from the longitudinal trunks of their tracheal system. Previous work revealed that the volume of these air sacs is controlled using a unique mechanochemical system, where alternating bands of resilin and tracheal cuticle produce a composite material which expands and contracts with changing pH. While a simple epithelium enveloping each air sac is known to control the pH of the

In the present study, the virulence of two Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) field isolates was evaluated in specific pathogen-free (SPF) and modern-day commercial broilers. Both MS isolates belonged to Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST) clonal complex (STCplx) 56, the most prevalent STCplx isolated from the respiratory tract of Dutch commercial poultry in the last two decades. Additionally, in this study, a well-defined histologic air sac lesion (ASL) score was combined with an in situ hybridization (ISH) test to further study the cellular reaction in the air sacs and tracheal tissue. Birds were challe

Pathogenicity trials in poultry are reported with an isolate of mycoplasma, designated 'W8', which is serologically unrelated to Mycoplasma gallisepticum, M synoviae or M meleagridis. W8 killed fowl and turkey embryos when injected into the yold sacs of embryonating eggs. Infection of one-day-old fowls, turkeys and pheasants by the air sac route caused marked growth depression and a high incidence of osteomyelitis of the vertebral column in all species. A large proportion of infected turkeys and a smaller proportion of infected pheasants also developed chondrodystrophic changes of the long bon

Using gross dissections and computed tomography we studied the lungs of juvenile American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis). Our findings indicate that both the external and internal morphology of the lungs is strikingly similar to the embryonic avian respiratory system (lungs + air sacs). We identified bronchi that we propose are homologous to the avian ventrobronchi (entobronchi), laterobronchi, dorsobronchi (ectobronchi), as well as regions of the lung hypothesized to be homologous to the cervical, interclavicular, anterior thoracic, posterior thoracic, and abdominal air sacs. This is a retrospective study on wild raptors submitted to the Université de Montréal (Quebec, Canada) from 1989 to 1996. Cyathostoma spp. (Nematoda: Syngamidae) adults and/or eggs were found in air sacs, lungs, bronchi, and trachea of 12 raptors (Falconiformes and Strigiformes) from Quebec, Canada, belonging to eight different species, five of which are first host records for this parasite: barred owl (Strix varia), snowy owl (Nyctea scandiaca), northern harrier (Circus cyaneus), northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), and broad-winged hawk (Buteo platypterus). The infection was considered fat

Trueperella pyogenes is an opportunistic Gram-positive bacterium that induces purulent lesions and abscesses in cattle, small ruminants, and swine. In birds, T. pyogenes infections have been linked to lameness and osteomyelitis in turkeys (Phasianidae) and hepatic fibriscess in turkeys and pigeons (Columbidae). An 18-mo-old backyard rooster with a history of progressive emaciation was submitted to the California Animal Health and Food Safety (CAHFS) laboratory system. At necropsy, unusual numerous miliary granulomas were identified, primarily in the spleen, but granulomas were also observed in

Diplotriaena obtusa is a nematode found in air sacs of a wide number of birds, including Passerine species. During a period of increased mortality of blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus) in Germany, we collected adult nematode worms from the air sacs of a deceased male blue tit. The nematodes showed morphological features consistent with Diplotriaena ssp. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay targeting the small subunit (SSU) 18S rRNA gene identified the parasite species as Diplotriaena obtusa. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed species identification. Further examinations against infectious pathoge

A 12-year-old female Harris's Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus) that presented with prominent dyspnea and open-mouthed breathing with increasing respiratory problems during handling procedures died suddenly. Necropsy revealed extensive granulomatous airsacculitis, serositis, and pneumonia. Intralesional dark red helminths consistent with Syngamidae sp. were seen in the trachea, air sacs, lungs, and on top of multiple visceral organs. Furthermore, ascaridoid worms were found in the lumen of the small intestine. PCR analysis of both helminth species resulted in Cyathostoma americana and Porrocaecum mo

The ontogeny of the digestive tract was studied histologically in burbot, Lota lota L., from hatching to 42 days post-hatch (dph). At hatching, the digestive tract consisted of a straight tube with discernible digestive accessory glands (the liver and the pancreas) dorsally attached to the yolk sac. Most of the yolk sac reserves were consumed during the first 12 days and were completely depleted by 17 dph. The first PAS-positive goblet cells appeared at 6 dph, dispersed within the epithelium of the oesophagus and increasing substantially in number and distribution as development progressed. At

The otic region in the skull of archeocetes and odontocetes is compared and interpreted with special emphasis on the morphology and suspension of the ear bones. In archeocetes, the periotic was obviously separate from the mastoid but still integrated within the skull via a long anterior and posterior process. The rotation of the cochlear part of the periotic was already obvious. The tympanic bone was attached to a decreasing number of neighboring elements, with the periotic becoming more and more important in the later archeocetes. The accessory air sacs of the tympanic cavity had invaded some
