Airport preparedness for mass disaster: a proposed schematic plan.

With the growth in the size of airplanes and the number of flights, the potential impact on airports of airplane-related disasters involving large numbers of people is increasing. Such disasters may result from accidents or terrorist activities. Although the development of plans for coping with such situations is a prerequisite to full certification of airports by the FAA, exercising the plans through disaster drills is only a recommendation. This has resulted in a situation where only a small minority of the fully certified airports are actually ready to handle a major disaster. Presented in

Longitudinal study of growth status and airport noise exposure.

A study of children living adjacent to an international airport was conducted to learn whether noise exposure affected physical growth. Prenatal and postnatal noise exposures were estimated for each subject based on noise levels at their residences during jetplane takeoffs. Subjects' birthweights were standardized for sex and parity, and their postnatal heights and weights were standardized for sex and age (range 6-11 years). The difference between standardized birthweight score and postnatal height score, and between birthweight score and postnatal weight score, represent a change in growth s

Navigating airports: a scoping review of physical access challenges and experiences for persons with disabilities.

Airports present a uniquely complex environment for travelers with disabilities, where the promise of global mobility often collides with persistent physical, sensory, and procedural barriers. This scoping review synthesizes peer-reviewed and gray literature to examine the physical environment of airports and how it shapes access for persons with disabilities, including the interaction between spatial features and service-related components in real-world travel situations. Guided by Fougeyrollas's five-dimensional framework of access availability, accessibility, acceptability, affordability, a

Environmental impacts on soil and groundwater at airports: origin, contaminants of concern and environmental risks.

Environmental impacts of airports are similar to those of many industries, though their operations expand over a very large area. Most international impact assessment studies and environmental management programmes have been giving less focus on the impacts to soil and groundwater than desirable. This may be the result of the large attention given to air and noise pollution, relegating other environmental descriptors to a second role, even when the first are comparatively less relevant. One reason that contributes to such "biased" evaluation is the lack of systematic information about impacts

Acute effects of night-time noise exposure on blood pressure in populations living near airports.

AIMS: Within the framework of the HYENA (hypertension and exposure to noise near airports) project we investigated the effect of short-term changes of transportation or indoor noise levels on blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) during night-time sleep in 140 subjects living near four major European airports. METHODS AND RESULTS: Non-invasive ambulatory BP measurements at 15 min intervals were performed. Noise was measured during the night sleeping period and recorded digitally for the identification of the source of a noise event. Exposure variables included equivalent noise level over 1

SARS-CoV-2 molecular diagnosis at airports to minimize travel-related COVID-19 spread.

Following the identification of SARS-CoV-2, screening for air travel helped mitigate spread, yet lessons learned from a case study of air travel within Canada display enhanced techniques to better identify infected individuals, informing future responsive screening. While international travel bans limit infectious spread beyond a country's borders, such measures are hardly sustainable economically and infrequently address domestic travel. Here, we describe a case study from Canada, where a diagnostic laboratory at point of travel conducted real-time PCR-based detection of SARS-CoV-2 in support

Risk Factors Associated with Passengers with Imported Dengue Fever at International Airports in Taiwan.

Dengue fever (DF) is a mosquito-borne disease prevalent in the tropics (e.g., sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and Central and South America) and a common cause of febrile illness in travelers. The high incidence of imported DF in Taiwan has led to a domestic outbreak. This study explored the risk factors associated with individuals given diagnoses of imported DF at international airports in Taiwan. The results may serve as a reference for DF prevention. In this retrospective study, data from the symptom notification system database of the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (TCDC) were used. These da

Hypertension and Exposure to Noise near Airports (HYENA): study design and noise exposure assessment.

An increasing number of people live near airports with considerable noise and air pollution. The Hypertension and Exposure to Noise near Airports (HYENA) project aims to assess the impact of airport-related noise exposure on blood pressure (BP) and cardiovascular disease using a cross-sectional study design. We selected 6,000 persons (45-70 years of age) who had lived at least 5 years near one of six major European airports. We used modeled aircraft noise contours, aiming to maximize exposure contrast. Automated BP instruments are used to reduce observer error. We designed a standardized quest

Detection of Monkeypox Virus DNA in Airport Wastewater, Rome, Italy.

Environmental surveillance can be a complementary tool for detecting pathogens circulating in communities. We detected monkeypox virus DNA in wastewater from Italy's largest airport by using real-time PCR assays targeting the G2R region and F3L and N3R genes and sequencing. Wastewater surveillance can be quickly adapted to investigate emerging threats.

Airport emergency management: The art of strict rules and flexible minds.

For businesses large and small, the world over, maintaining operational continuity is an economic imperative. This paper suggests that airports provide a good case study from which to learn, due to their emergency-oriented nature; their nonstop tango with disruptions of many origins; their experience in moving from crisis to normal operations as quickly as possible; and because of their multifaceted functions and stakeholders. With this in mind, the article illustrates how the various challenges faced by airport operators align with those faced by businesses more generally. The paper argues th

The assessment and management of third party risk around a major airport.

Schiphol, the main airport of the Netherlands, is growing rapidly. The aircraft movements, also growing in number, place a considerable environmental burden on the surrounding population, notably, noise and odour nuisance and risks. In the process of deciding on how to extend the capacity of the airport to accommodate the anticipated twofold growth in the number of movements with respect to 1990, environmental problems form a major concern. The concern about risks for the surrounding population was enhanced after the crash on 4 October 1992, in which a Boeing 747 cargo carrier bored into a blo

Effects of Aircraft Noise Exposure on Heart Rate during Sleep in the Population Living Near Airports.

Background Noise in the vicinity of airports is a public health problem. Many laboratory studies have shown that heart rate is altered during sleep after exposure to road or railway noise. Fewer studies have looked at the effects of exposure to aircraft noise on heart rate during sleep in populations living near airports. Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the sound pressure level (SPL) of aircraft noise and heart rate during sleep in populations living near airports in France. Methods In total, 92 people living near the Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Toul

Import of antibiotics by air travellers - an observational study at airports in Sweden and Norway.

BACKGROUND: Overuse and misuse of antibiotics are two of the main drivers of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). In some countries antibiotics can be purchased over the counter, whereas in Scandinavia and most of Europe, antibiotics require a prescription. It is permitted to bring medicines for personal use to Scandinavia. This raises concerns about whether antibiotics are being imported into low-prescribing countries, such as Scandinavia, via international airports. We aimed to investigate the quantity and types of antibiotics imported by air travellers entering Norway and Sweden, based on routin

Two fatal autochthonous cases of airport malaria, Belgium, 2020.

We report an outbreak investigation of two fatal cases of autochthonous Plasmodium falciparum malaria that occurred in Belgium in September 2020. Various hypotheses of the potential source of infection were investigated. The most likely route of transmission was through an infectious exotic Anopheles mosquito that was imported via the international airport of Brussels or the military airport Melsbroek and infected the cases who lived at 5 km from the airports. Based on genomic analysis of the parasites collected from the two cases, the most likely origin of the Plasmodium was Gabon or Cameroon

Exposure evaluation to airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in an italian airport.

The aim of this study was to use environmental monitoring to evaluate occupational exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and biphenyl in an Italian airport. Air was sampled using a quartz fiber filter, a polyurethane foam, and an XAD-2 layer. After extraction with dichloromethane, concentration and purification analyses of 25 PAHs (including biphenyl) were carried out by gas chromatography-ion trap mass spectrometry. In winter 2005, 12 air samples were taken at 120 L/min for 24 hours in three different areas of the airport. PAH levels were found to be generally low. In all invest

From detection to prediction: Asymptomatic shedding-informed mass-balance modeling predicts travel-borne viral importation at airports.

Aircraft wastewater surveillance (AWS) has emerged as a non-invasive tool for travel-mediated pathogen detection, yet its utility remains largely descriptive without capacity to translate environmental concentrations into quantitative infection dynamics. This study aimed to advance AWS from passive pathogen detection to an active predictive framework by integrating mass balance back-calculation with hybrid-capture genomic surveillance. To resolve a critical parameter gap in mass-balance modeling-namely, the fecal shedding kinetics of asymptomatic influenza carriers, we prospectively enrolled 2

Dehumanizing air travel: a scoping review on accessibility and inclusion of people with disabilities in international airports.

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, one in six individuals live with a disability. Many people continue to experience disabling situations, particularly when travelling. Travel can be an important part of the lives of many people, including people with disabilities. Barriers to accessing air travel can lead to a reluctance to travel for these potential passengers. As early as the flight planning stage, options to facilitate accessibility are limited. At airports, passengers must travel long distances in areas where navigation is complex, and accessibility limited. Furthermore, few aircraft are accessible

The impact of modern airport security protocols on patients with total shoulder replacements.

BACKGROUND: Advancements in airport screening measures in response to 9/11 have resulted in increased false alarm rates for patients with orthopedic and metal implants. With the implementation of millimeter-wave scanning technology, it is important to assess the changes in airport screening experiences of patients who underwent total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). METHODS: Here, 197 patients with prior anatomic and reverse TSA completed between 2013 and 2020 responded to a questionnaire regarding their experiences with airport travel screening after their operation. Of these patients, 86 (44%)
