Allergic and asthmatic reactions to alcoholic drinks.

Alcoholic drinks are capable of triggering a wide range of allergic and allergic-like responses, including rhinitis, itching, facial swelling, headache, cough and asthma. Limited epidemiological data suggests that many individuals are affected and that sensitivities occur to a variety of drinks, including wine, beer and spirits. In surveys of asthmatics, over 40% reported the triggering of allergic or allergic-like symptoms following alcoholic drink consumption and 30 - 35% reported worsening of their asthma. Sensitivity to ethanol itself can play a role in triggering adverse responses, partic

Drinking habits and peripheral alcoholic neuropathy.

Drinking habits of 156 consecutive polyneuropathic and 106 consecutive pressure palsy patients were evaluated in retrospect. Respectively, 46 patients (30%) had alcohol polyneuropathy and 32 (30%) got pressure neuropathy while being drunk and these patients were analyzed in more detail. Most of the patients with alcoholic neuropathies were men, those with polyneuropathy being older than those having pressure palsies. Pressure neuropathy coincided with alcoholic polyneuropathy in 13 patients (28%). Other medical complication of heavy alcohol drinking (i.e. liver diseases, seizures and cerebella

Alcoholic drinks as triggers in primary headaches.

OBJECTIVE: This project aims to investigate the role of alcoholic drinks (ADs) as triggers for primary headaches. METHODS: Patients followed in the Headache Centre and presenting with migraine without aura, migraine with aura (MA), chronic migraine (CM), and tension-type headache (TH) were asked if their headache was precipitated by AD and also about their alcohol habits. Individual characteristics and drink habits were evaluated within two binary logistic models. RESULTS: About one half (49.7%) of patients were abstainers, 17.6% were habitual consumers, and 32.5% were occasional consumers.

Alcohol and drink driving in the United Kingdom.

The background to and current status of the drink driving law in the United Kingdom is explained. Screening tests and analytical methods for alcohol in blood, breath and urine are described. Legal limits of 80 mg/100 mL in blood, 107 mg/100 mL in urine and 35 microg/100 mL in breath have been set. Penalties for exceeding the legal limit include a twelve month ban from driving for a first offence and three years and ten years respectively for subsequent convictions. Special reasons why a licence should not be withdrawn are considered together with the effect of medication on alcohol levels. Fin

The effect of controlled drinking in alcoholic cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Cardiomyopathy is a potentially fatal complication of alcohol abuse. In alcoholic persons who develop cardiac dysfunction, abstinence is thought to be essential to halt further deterioration of cardiac contractility. Some evidence indicates that reducing alcohol intake may also be beneficial. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of moderate "controlled" drinking on cardiac function in patients with alcoholic cardiomyopathy. DESIGN: 4-year prospective cohort study. SETTING: A university hospital in Barcelona, Spain. PATIENTS: 55 alcoholic men with cardiomyopathy who had been drinki

Alcoholic drinks: important triggers for asthma.

BACKGROUND: Although anecdotally alcoholic drinks seem to be common triggers for asthma, little is known of the prevalence, the characteristics, or the mechanisms underlying these reactions. OBJECTIVES: The primary aim of this study was to determine the frequency and characteristics of asthmatic reactions triggered by alcoholic drinks in a community-based cohort of asthmatic subjects. Investigations of other food sensitivities were also completed to explore some of the possible components of alcoholic drinks that may be responsible for these asthmatic responses. METHODS: A validated food all

Recent heavy drinking of alcohol and embolic stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Epidemiological evidence suggests that heavy alcohol consumption increases the risk for ischemic stroke, whereas light-to-moderate alcohol intake decreases the risk, but the role of different drinking patterns has remained unclear. We investigated recent light, moderate, and heavy alcohol drinking and former heavy drinking as risk factors for acute ischemic brain infarction by etiological subtype of stroke. METHODS: We compared 212 consecutive patients aged between 16 and 60 years, who were completely evaluated for the etiology of their ischemic stroke, with 274 contro

Parental problem drinking, parenting, and adolescent alcohol use.

The present study examined whether parental problem drinking affected parenting (i.e., behavioral control, support, rule-setting, alcohol-specific behavioral control), and whether parental problem drinking and parenting affected subsequent adolescent alcohol use over time. A total of 428 families, consisting of both parents and two adolescents (mean age 13.4 and 15.2 years at Time 1) participated in a three-wave longitudinal study with annual waves. A series of path analyses were conducted using a structural equation modeling program (Mplus). Results demonstrated that, unexpectedly, parental p

Alcohol drinking in MCH receptor-1-deficient mice.

BACKGROUND: Recently, we demonstrated that exogenous melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) increases alcohol drinking in rats when administered into the brain. However, because the physiological relevance of this finding is unclear, we tested the hypothesis that endogenous MCH signaling enhances alcohol consumption. METHODS: Alcohol intake was assessed in male and female wildtype (WT), heterozygous (HET), and homozygous MCH receptor-1-deficient (KO) mice. Mice were given 24-hour access to a series of alcohol-containing solutions. Following this, the mice were given limited (1-hour) access to 10

[Does chronic alcohol drinking modify digestive gastrobiliary motility?].

In 23 chronic alcoholics and 23 controls gastric emptying, antral motility, fasting gallbladder volume and gallbladder emptying after a standardized, liquid fatty meal were investigated ultrasonically in order to assess the effect of chronic alcoholism on postprandial gastrobiliary motility. Only a subgroup of the alcoholics with signs of autonomic cardiovascular neuropathy (21.7%) exhibited a significant antral hypomotility and a tendency towards higher fasting gallbladder volumes. No significant differences between the study groups could be obtained for the other parameters. The duration and

Alcoholism diagnoses for convicted drinking drivers referred for alcoholism evaluation.

The types and extent of alcohol-related problems were determined for a sample of 461 convicted drinking drivers who were referred to an alcoholism treatment facility for evaluation and possible treatment. Using responses to questionnaire and structured interview questions on alcohol-related problems, DSM III diagnoses are constructed; approximately three-quarters of the sample are diagnosed with sufficient severity for a DSM III diagnosis of abuse or dependence. Self-reported consumption levels and drinking/driving incidents increase as the level of the alcohol problem increases; persons in th

Alcoholics who drink mouthwash: the spectrum of nonbeverage alcohol use.

Nonbeverage alcohol (NBA), or substitutes for traditional forms of beverage alcohol, includes such substances as mouthwash, aftershave lotion and alcohol-based fuels. Literature pertaining to the prevalence, clinical significance and toxicity of this practice is reviewed, using illustrative cases from a series of 48 NBA consumers. It was found that 10-15% of alcoholics hospitalized in detoxication units have consumed NBA; half of these patients are regular consumers. Addiction to NBA itself may occur. Its use is primarily related to easy accessibility, rather than social or monetary factors. P

The use of alcohol-free and low-alcohol drinks in pregnancy in the UK.

Alcohol-free drinks [beers, ciders, wines, and spirits containing <0.05% alcohol by volume (ABV)], and low-alcohol drinks (between 0.05% and 1.2% ABV) are increasingly available and may be used as a harm reduction measure. However, it is not known what pregnant women think and feel about these drinks and how regularly they are consumed before and during pregnancy. A cross-sectional online survey was developed and piloted. Women ≥18 years in the UK who were pregnant, or recently pregnant, were recruited via targeted social media advertising. Of the 2092 respondents, 47.8% (n = 1001) were curren

A drink is a drink? Variation in the amount of alcohol contained in beer, wine and spirits drinks in a US methodological sample.

BACKGROUND: Empirically based estimates of the mean alcohol content of beer, wine and spirits drinks from a national sample of US drinkers are not currently available. METHODS: A sample of 310 drinkers from the 2000 National Alcohol Survey were re-contacted to participate in a telephone survey with specific questions about the drinks they consume. Subjects were instructed to prepare their usual drink of each beverage at home and to measure each alcoholic beverage and other ingredients with a provided beaker. Information on the brand or type of each beverage was used to specify the percentage

Drinking motives and alcohol sensitivity mediate multidimensional genetic influences on alcohol use behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Genetic influences account for a substantial proportion of individual differences in alcohol use behaviors (AUBs). However, multiple distinct sets of genes are linked to different AUBs via uncertain causal links. Here, we explore whether intermediate neurobiological traits mediate the relationship between polygenic scores (PGSs) and multiple AUBs, with the aim to better understand processes captured by different genetic profiles. METHODS: We derived four alcohol-related PGSs in participants from Spit for Science, a longitudinal study of college students in the United States (n = 4

Alcohol dependence and the ventral hippocampal influence on alcohol drinking in male mice.

Examining neural circuits underlying persistent, heavy drinking provides insight into the neurobiological mechanisms driving alcohol use disorder. Facilitated by its connectivity with other parts of the brain such as the nucleus accumbens (NAc), the ventral hippocampus (vHC) supports many behaviors, including those related to reward seeking and addiction. These studies used a well-established mouse model of alcohol (ethanol) dependence. After surgery to infuse DREADD-expressing viruses (hM4Di, hM3Dq, or mCherry-only) into the vHC and position guide cannula above the NAc, male C57BL/6J mice wer
