Enantioseparation of secondary alcohols by diastereoisomeric salt formation.

A general method was found for the resolution of the racemic 1-phenyl-1-propanol (1) and 1-phenyl-2-propanol (2) with various resolving agents. Monoesters of the alcohols were prepared, which were then reacted with different chiral bases. Successful optical resolutions were achieved only with the maleic acid monoesters (3 and 6). Alcohol 1 has been resolved to >99% enantiomeric excess by diastereoisomeric salt formation via its maleic acid monoester (3) using cinchonidine (9) as resolving agent. Alcohol 2 has been obtained in 98% enantiomeric excess by diastereoisomeric salt formation via its

Lipophilic amino alcohols with calcium channel blocking activity.

A series of novel lipophilic amino alcohols, analogs of the anticholinergic drug vesamicol, were evaluated for Ca2+ channel blocking activity. The effects of these drugs on depolarization-induced intracellular free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) transients were examined in single NG108-15 cells and dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons in culture. [Ca2+] was recorded with the Ca2+ indicator Indo-1 and a dual emission microfluorimeter. Structure-activity studies indicated that features required for Ca2+ channel blocking activity were distinct from those required for anticholinergic activity. In part

Alcohols induce interferon in primary chick embryo cells.

Primary chick embryo cells (CEC), cultured in vitro, produce interferon (IFN) following alcohol treatment. Brief exposure of cells to methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol, or butanol resulted in the production of an acid-labile IFN which could be detected in the supernatant medium as early as 60 min after removal of the drug. Following "priming" of the cells by homologous IFN, these four alcohols induced even greater yields of IFN: up to 4,000 units per 10(7) cells of an acid-stable IFN were detected. In contrast, priming of CEC with IFN had no effect on the yield of IFN induced by a standard viral i

Organophotocatalytic Aryl Radical-Mediated Deoxygenative Imination of Alcohols.

Herein, we report a transition-metal-free organophotocatalytic strategy for the deoxygenative formation of C(sp3)-N bonds from readily available alcohols. The method employs diaryl ketone O-aroyl oximes as bifunctional reagents, serving as both radical precursors and nitrogen sources. Under mild visible-light irradiation, primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohol-derived xanthates are efficiently converted to imines with broad functional group tolerance. The protocol is practical, enabling gram-scale synthesis, one-pot imidation, and late-stage functionalization of complex molecules such as qui

Borane-Mediated Highly Secondary Selective Deoxyfluorination of Alcohols.

Organofluorine compounds are vital across multiple sectors, hence highly selective methods to install fluorine are of considerable importance. The deoxyfluorination of alcohols is a key approach to prepare organofluorine compounds, however, a highly secondary (2°)-selective deoxyfluorination of alcohols has not been realized to date. Herein, we report that borane-mediated deoxyfluorination results in high 2°-selectivity in inter- and intra-molecular competition reactions versus primary (1°), tertiary (3°) and even benzylic (Bn) alcohols. This is an operationally simple method using only commer

Organic photoredox-catalyzed unimolecular PCET of benzylic alcohols.

Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is a crucial chemical process involving the simultaneous or sequential transfer of protons and electrons, playing a vital role in biological processes and energy conversion technologies. This study investigates the use of an organic photoredox catalyst to facilitate a unimolecular PCET process for the generation of alkyl radicals from benzylic alcohols, with a particular focus on alcohols containing electron-rich arene units. By employing a benzophenone derivative as the catalyst, the reaction proceeds efficiently under photoirradiation, achieving signif

Manganese-catalyzed cyclopropanation of allylic alcohols with sulfones.

Cyclopropanes are among the most important structural units in natural products, pharmaceuticals, and agrochemicals. Herein, we report a manganese-catalyzed cyclopropanation of allylic alcohols with sulfones as carbene alternative precursors via a borrowing hydrogen strategy under mild conditions. Various allylic alcohols and arylmethyl trifluoromethyl sulfones work efficiently in this borrowing hydrogen transformation and thereby deliver the corresponding cyclopropylmethanol products in 58% to 99% yields. Importantly, a major benefit of this transformation is that the versatile free alcohol m

Photoredox Catalysis-Enabled Sulfination of Alcohols and Bromides.

Sulfinates are important lynchpin intermediates in pharmaceutical production; however, their synthesis via photoredox catalysis is challenging because of their facile oxidation. We herein disclose a photocatalytic strategy for the direct conversion of alcohols and alkyl bromides into alkyl sulfinates. These transformations are enabled by the utilization of easily oxidized radical precursors─namely, alcohol N-heterocyclic carbene adducts and N-adamantyl aminosupersilane─that facilitate efficient synthesis of the oxidatively labile sulfinate products. A broad range of functional groups are amena

Alcohols radicals can efficiently reduce recalcitrant perfluorooctanoic acid.

Alcohols are commonly used as eluents for the regeneration of per/poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) adsorbents, but their potential effects on the subsequent treatment of these eluates have not been fully explored. This work investigated the effect of alcohols on perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) degradation by persulfate (PS) based advanced oxidation processes. The results showed that ethanol significantly promoted PFOA degradation in thermal/PS system. Under anoxic conditions, 25.5±1.4% or 91.2±1.6% of PFOA was degraded within 48 h in the absence or presence of ethanol. Electron paramagnetic r

Cross-coupling reactions with esters, aldehydes, and alcohols.

Cross-coupling reactions to form biaryls and π bond addition reactions to prepare substituted carbonyls or alcohols represent two of the most frequently performed families of chemical reactions. Recent progress in catalysis has uncovered substantial overlap between these two seemingly distinct topics. In particular, esters, aldehydes, and alcohols have been shown to act as carbon-based coupling partners in a range of Ni- and Pd-catalyzed reactions to prepare amides, ketones, substituted alcohols, alkanes, and more. These reactions provide promising alternatives to commonly used stoichiometric

Functionalized Resins for the Synthesis of Peptide Alcohols.

Peptide alcohols are clinically important compounds that are underexplored in structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies in drug discovery. One reason for this underutilization is that current syntheses are laborious and time consuming. Herein, we describe the preparation and utility of Rink, Ramage, and Sieber-chloride resins, which enables the use of a general, easy and practical method for the attachment of fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (Fmoc)-amino alcohols to a solid support, in the synthesis of peptide alcohols. This method is the first straightforward Fmoc/tBu synthesis of peptide alcohol

A Brief Review on Toxic Alcohols: Management Strategies.

The information on burden of alcohol abuse in Iran is scarce. However, the available data show that mortality rates and frequency of its use have increased in the Iranian community. In particular, Iran occupies the 1st rank in the number of outbreak incidents and victims of toxic alcohols such as methanol in the Middle East. Mortality and morbidity of toxic alcohols are high if prompt diagnosis and treatment are not initiated rapidly. On-time diagnosis, proper case finding, and standard treatment have an essential role to reduce mortality and morbidity of toxic alcohols particularly blindness

The other alcohols. Methanol, ethylene glycol, and isopropanol.

The alcoholic patient, in an attempt to maintain an altered mental status, may ingest ethanol substitutes containing methanol, ethylene glycol, or isopropanol. The subsequent clinical presentation in the Emergency Department is highly variable and depends on the ethanol substitute ingested, the time since ingestion, and concomitant ethanol abuse. This article describes the clinical features of intoxication by the ethanol substitutes. Early diagnosis and therapeutic intervention may prevent irreversible sequelae. The rationale for treatment interventions is discussed.

Stereo- and Site-Selective Conversion of Primary Alcohols to Allylic Alcohols via Ruthenium-Catalyzed Hydrogen Auto-Transfer Mediated by 2-Butyne.

The first enantioselective ruthenium-catalyzed carbonyl vinylations via hydrogen autotransfer are described. Using a ruthenium-JOSIPHOS catalyst, primary alcohols 2a-2m and 2-butyne 1a are converted to chiral allylic alcohols 3a-3m with excellent levels of absolute stereocontrol. Notably, 1°,2°-1,3-diols participate in site-selective C-C coupling, enabling asymmetric carbonyl vinylation beyond premetalated reagents, exogenous reductants, or hydroxyl protecting groups. Using 2-propanol as a reductant, aldehydes dehydro-2a, 2l participate in highly enantioselective 2-butyne-mediated vinylation u

Selective Oxidation of Biomass-Derived Alcohols and Aromatic and Aliphatic Alcohols to Aldehydes with O2/Air Using a RuO2-Supported Mn3O4 Catalyst.

Selective catalytic oxidation of carbohydrate-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, furfuryl alcohol, and various aromatic and aliphatic compounds to the corresponding aldehyde is a challenging task. The development of a sustainable heterogeneous catalyst is crucial in achieving high selectivity for the desired aldehyde, especially using O2 or air. In this study, a RuO2-supported Mn3O4 catalyst is reported for the selective oxidation reaction. Treatment of MnO2 molecular sieves with RuCl3 in aqueous formaldehyde solution gives a new type of RuO2-supported Mn3O4 catalyst. Detailed catalyst character

Electrochemically driven deoxychlorination of aliphatic alcohols via alkoxysulfonium intermediates.

Native aliphatic alcohols are highly abundant feedstocks for organic synthesis but remain challenging as alkyl donors. Herein, a new class of electrochemically triggered deoxygenative substitution of aliphatic alcohols is described. In the presence of diphenyl sulfide, the protocol furnishes alkyl chloride products under mild conditions and tolerates functional groups such as amines, carbamates, heteroaromatic rings, sulfones and free carboxylic acids. Mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction proceeds via nucleophilic substitution of alkoxysulfonium intermediates with inversion of config
