Gastric ulcer (GU), a common digestive system disorder in clinical practice, often arises from excessive alcohol consumption and other factors that irritate the gastric mucosa. Effective treatment of GU remains challenging due to the poor targeting, limited efficacy, and significant side effects associated with current therapeutic approaches. To address these limitations, we developed a microenvironment-responsive hydrogel composed of sodium alginate (SA) and chitosan (CS), incorporating MnO2 nanoparticles and pachymic acid (PA). This hydrogel was designed to evaluate its therapeutic potential

This study synthesized a ternary polymer material composed of alginic acid, acrylic acid, and fulvic acid (AAF). Catalytic polymerization yielded a material that effectively binds calcium ions. AAF can bind up to 8.7 times its mass in calcium ions and has multifunctional agricultural applications. Experimental results showed that the optimal mass ratio of alginic acid, acrylic acid, and fulvic acid was 3:2:0.6. When the reaction was carried out at 60 °C for 6 h, the prepared material, containing a large number of carboxyl, hydroxyl, and other groups, exhibits extremely strong binding ability t

Background Tissue gliding and mobility are crucial for the success of penile procedures, as postoperative adhesions can lead to painful tethering of tissues, including nerves. While most commercially available options are not designed to reduce friction and/or often have inconsistent bioresorption, a novel hyaluronic acid/alginate hydrogel represents a significant advancement in reducing postoperative tissue adhesions. This study aimed to evaluate its intra-operative application in pediatric and adult urologic surgeries with associated indications and postoperative outcomes (re-admission, re-o

BACKGROUND: Soft tissue adhesions following hand and microsurgical procedures are frequent and debilitating complications, limiting tendon gliding, entrapping nerves, and impairing outcomes. A fully resorbable hyaluronic acid/alginate hydrogel, available in sheet and gel formulations, was introduced to mitigate adhesion formation. This study aimed to (1) assess hydrogel application across varied tissue environments, (2) evaluate perioperative complication rates, and (3) compare outcomes between the 2 forms.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 83 complex hand and microsurgery cases at a single

Damaged cartilage has very low regenerative potential which has led to the search for novel tissue-engineering approaches to help treat cartilage defects. While various approaches have been reported, there is no perfect treatment currently. In this study we evaluated the effects of a plant extract, chlorogenic acid (CGA), as part of chondrocyte transplantation on a model of knee joint injury in chicks. First, primary cultured chondrocytes used to evaluate the effects of CGA on chondrogenesis. Then using an articular cartilage injury model of chick knee we assessed the functional recovery after

Pancreatic islet transplantation has proved to be a promising therapy for T1DM, in spite of the chronic immunosuppression required. Although cell microencapsulation technology represents an alternative to circumvent the immune system rejection of transplanted pancreatic islets, the environment provided by classical alginate microcapsules does not mimic the natural ECM, affecting the islet survival. Since hyaluronic acid, one of the major components of pancreatic ECM, is involved in cell adhesion and viability, we assessed the beneficial outcomes on encapsulated insulin-producing cells by the H

A microwave assisted synthesis of a water soluble fluorogenic interpolymeric diamide has been described involving alginic acid and polyglucuronic acid (PGA) amide of ethylenediamine (EDA), through a monoamide of PGA and EDA, in good yields (>80wt% in each step). PGA was prepared by TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl piperidine-1-oxyl radical) mediated oxidation of cellulose of the halophytic plant Salicornia brachiata. The amides were characterized by spectral analyses. The fluorescence emission of the PGA amide was 7-fold greater than that of the interpolymeric diamide. PGA monoamide exhibited superi

Probiotic delivery faces challenges in maintaining bacterial viability and achieving precise targeting of the gastrointestinal tract. In this study, alginate microspheres (ALG MSs) encapsulating Clostridium butyricum (CB) were fabricated using electrospray technology. Hyaluronic acid (HA) was used to modify both the microspheres and the CB surface to enable targeted delivery through the receptor-ligand interaction between HA and CD44. The resulting CBHA@ALGHA MSs exhibited an encapsulation efficiency of 69.23 ± 7.30% and a postdigestion survival rate of 94.56 ± 4.87%. HA modification enhanced

In this study, zein/ferulic acid nanoparticles (ZFs) and zein/ferulic acid/sodium alginate nanoparticles (ZFSs) were prepared using the anti-solvent method and employed to stabilize Pickering emulsions. Compared with ZFs, ZFSs exhibited better performance. Specifically, although the particle size increased from 186.4 nm to 202.9 nm, the polydispersity index decreased from 0.27 to 0.19. The zeta potential shifted from +30.88 mV to -46.01 mV, and the denaturation peak temperature increased from 101.0 °C to 135.0 °C. Furthermore, FTIR analysis suggested the presence of hydrogen bonds, electrostat

Thermogelling polymers with transparency, structure stability and biocompatibility are promising for biomedicine application. In this study, a thermogelling polymer P-C5PEG with tunable transparency was developed by the reaction between alternating copolymer C5PEG and chemically modified biomolecule Alg-PBA via boronic ester bonds. The sol-to-gel transition of P-C5PEG aqueous solution sensitively responded to changes in temperature, and the critical value could be adjusted between 15 and 40 °C by varying the content of C5PEG and Alg-PBA. As the weight ratio of Alg-PBA to C5PEG was over 0.3, th

Pharmacotherapy were the mainstream methods for the treatment of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR), one of the leading causes of blindness. Due to the negligible side-effects, retinoic acid (RA) was considered to be a promising candidate drug. However, it was still a challenge to deliver drugs into vitreous with both long-term efficiency and biosafety. Sodium alginate was considered to be an excellent drug carrier owing to its controlled size, good biocompatibility and degradability. Based on a one-time synthetic strategy of preparing RA-sodium alginate microspheres, the study was aimed to

BACKGROUND: Deoxynivalenol (DON), a mycotoxin commonly found in grains and feed, poses a serious threat to animal and public health. This study aimed to investigate the underlying mechanisms of DON-induced liver damage in piglets and to elucidate the potential of alginate-encapsulated enzyme in mitigating hepatotoxicity in vivo.
RESULTS: The results indicated that DON exposure induced growth retardation and hepatic mitochondrial damage in piglets, which were effectively rescued by DON-degrading enzymes (DDE) supplementation. Hepatic transcriptomic profiling revealed that DON induced downregul

Mechanical wounding, a significant cause of yield loss in agricultural crops, has prompted recent efforts to identify effective solutions, such as applying biostimulants that not only improve plant growth but also enhance resistance to mechanical damage. This study evaluates the combined effects of alginate (Al-1, 0.75 mg mL-1), salicylic acid (SA, 100 µM), and chitosan (Ch, 0.75 mg mL-1) on tomato plant growth, biochemical responses, and recovery from mechanical wounding. The results indicate that Al-1 accumulates at the plant cell wall, transitioning from a liquid to a film-like state. Durin

Intervertebral disc degeneration is a leading cause of chronic low back pain, affecting millions globally. Regenerative medicine, particularly cell-based therapies, presents a promising therapeutic strategy. This study evaluates the comparative efficacy of two biomaterials-hyaluronic acid (HA) and alginate-as carriers for nucleus pulposus (NP) cell transplantation in a beagle model of induced disc degeneration. NP cells were isolated, cultured, and injected with either HA or alginate into degenerated discs, with saline and non-cell-loaded carriers used as controls. Disc height index, T2-weight

BACKGROUND: Ellagic acid (EA), a potent dietary antioxidant, has limited bioavailability owing to its rapid absorption in the stomach and small intestine, and EA is transformed to more bioavailable compounds - urolithins - in the colon. An encapsulation system that sustains the release of EA in the gastrointestinal system and delivers more EA into the colon could improve the oral bioavailability of EA. Electrosprayed EA-loaded alginate-pectin beads were produced and coated with low- (LC) and high-molecular-weight chitosan (HC). The EA release from uncoated and coated beads under simulated gast

3D-bioprinting is an emerging technology of high potential in tissue engineering (TE), since it shows effective control over scaffold fabrication and cell distribution. Biopolymers such as alginate (Alg), nanofibrillated cellulose (NC) and hyaluronic acid (HA) offer excellent characteristics for use as bioinks due to their excellent biocompatibility and rheological properties. Cell incorporation into the bioink requires sterilisation assurance, and autoclave, β-radiation and γ-radiation are widely used sterilisation techniques in biomedicine; however, their use in 3D-bioprinting for bioinks st

Increase in the geriatric population has led to an increase in the number of elderly patients with laryngeal atrophy and dysfunction. Symptoms of voice change, dysphagia, and aspiration pneumonia negatively influence patient's health status, quality of life, and life span. Injection laryngoplasty used to treat laryngeal dysfunctions does not recover intrinsic functions of the larynx. Thus, we fabricated an injectable basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF)-loaded alginate (ALG)/hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogel for inducing rejuvenation of geriatric laryngeal muscles. Optimal in situ-forming bFGF-lo

The biocatalytic production of nicotinic acid using nitrilases has emerged as a promising alternative to conventional chemical synthesis, offering improved selectivity and environmental sustainability. In this study, we developed a continuous-flow millireactor system employing Escherichia coli cells expressing a nitrilase from Paraburkholderia phymatum (NitPhym) for the continuous production of nicotinic acid. To enhance catalytic efficiency and stability, whole cells were immobilized using two different strategies: covalent attachment to the reactor walls and encapsulation in alginate microbe
