The incidence of congenital urachal, bladder, and cloacal anomalies is low. Urachal remnants are the result of failure or delay in obliteration of the allantois. Exstrophy of the bladder or cloaca can be diagnosed on prenatal ultrasonography and represent a deviation from the normal embryologic sequence. Persistent cloaca is an anomaly occurring in girls, in which a common cavity exists into which the intestinal, urinary, and reproductive tracts all open. It is also often diagnosed on prenatal imaging.

Congenital prepubic sinus is a rare congenital anomaly situated in the midline of the lower abdomen. We report a case of congenital prepubic sinus, closely associated with a urachal remnant. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging showed clearly that the sinus tracked the urachus caudally. This finding supports the theory that the anomaly is caused by abnormal remnant tissue originating from the cloacal membrane, which tracks the allantois duct caudally along with fetal longitudinal growth.

We present the sonographic findings of a fetus with a vesicoallantoic cyst. The cyst was first identified at 17 weeks of gestation; it was associated with an omphalocele, and disappeared spontaneously at 29 weeks. The fetal urinary bladder was not visualized thereafter. An omphalocele and exstrophia of the urachus were found at birth and repaired. Non-visualization of the fetal urinary bladder suggested rupture of the covering membrane of the omphalocele and allantois during fetal life. A defect in the wall of the omphalocele supported our hypothesis.

Urachus is the remnant of the embryologic allantois and the fetal bladder, extending form the bladder roof to the umbilicus. It degenerates in the prenatal period into a tissue band known as the median umbilical ligament. Incomplete degeneration may lead to urachal diverticle development. It is difficult to diagnose unless it is considered in differential diagnosis and imaging modalities are employed. This paper describes a patient treated with partial cystectomy for urachal diverticle, and the pathologic examination revealed urachal adenocarcinoma.

A multiparous pregnant Welsh Pony mare was examined because of anorexia, dyspnea, and a large abdomen. Ultrasonography of the uterus revealed an excessive amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus. Transabdominal ultrasonography permitted differentiation of hydrops amnii from hydrops allantois. The mare aborted a 7-month-old fetus with brachygnathia and a large, edematous umbilical cord. Hydrops amnii, an excessive accumulation of amniotic fluid in the amniotic cavity, is most commonly reported in cattle and sheep.

Various sex hormones (testosterone, oestradiol, dehydroepiandrosterone), in the form of suspensions in oil, are injected into the allantois of normal and chondrodystrophic (Creeper) chick embryos of 6 days 1/2 incubation. Observations made on each of the phenotypes on the 12th day of incubation show that oil injected alone causes a significant decrease in the dry weight of the tibiae. This inhibitory effect is partially abolished when the oil is injected together with the sex hormones, testosterone being the most effective.

The urachus is a vestigial structure of the allantois and cloaca. It involutes as fetal development progresses to become a fibrous cord, which courses between the umbilicus and bladder dome within the retropubic space. Infection occasionally occurs in patients with congenital patent urachus. Here, we report a patient with infection of a previously closed urachal tract presenting as an abdominal mass. This has rarely been described in the literature. Current knowledge on imaging findings to the diagnosis is discussed.

The concentration of AFP in the plasma of fetal pigs was highest in early gestation (Days 15-30) and declined with advancing gestation. This pattern was comparable to those observed in other mammals with similar lengths of gestation. In contrast, allantoic and amniotic fluid AFP concentrations were highest during the middle third of gestation but these concentrations were much lower than those in fetal plasma throughout gestation. The allantois appears to be a significant distribution space for AFP in early gestation.

Urachal cyst is a clinical malformation caused by failure of the allantois to obliterate during embryological development. Because of its rare presentation in adults, urachal cysts are often incorrectly diagnosed. Delay in diagnosis can cause complications such as peritonitis, fistula, sepsis, or even malignant manifestation. We report the case of a 19-year-old adult male, who presented with clinical features mimicking appendicitis. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging confirmed diagnosis of an infected urachal cyst, which was treated surgically.

Allantiod cysts are true cysts in the umbilical cord. They arise from persistent structures of allantois, and the cysts are filled with urine because of a connection to the urinary bladder. Allantoid cysts are located centrally in the umbilical cord and separate the umbilical cord vessels. B-flow ultrasound is a new technique illustrating blood flow. This method is independent of the insonation angle and therefore superior to Doppler ultrasound visualising long segments of vessels with a winding course. The authors present a case with allantoid cysts diagnosed with B-flow ultrasound.

Secreted Wnt proteins regulate many developmental processes in multicellular organisms. We have generated a targeted mutation in the mouse Wnt7b gene. Homozygous Wnt7b mutant mice die at midgestation stages as a result of placental abnormalities.
