Bioherbicidal activity and putative mode of action of Dittrichia graveolens against Amaranthus palmeri and A. retroflexus.

BACKGROUND: Challenges in controlling Amaranthus weeds and rising cases of herbicide resistance necessitate the development of alternative weed control strategies. Plant-derived extracts may serve as valuable sources of phytotoxic chemicals. Nevertheless, their species-specific effects on germination and early seedling development require investigation. This study evaluated the allelopathic activity of aqueous extracts of Dittrichia graveolens on Amaranthus palmeri and A. retroflexus. METHODS: Aqueous extracts of D. graveolens were evaluated against A. palmeri and A. retroflexus under control

Allelopathic effect of Artemisia argyi on the germination and growth of various weeds.

Allelopathy means that one plant produces chemical substances to affect the growth and development of other plants. Usually, allelochemicals can stimulate or inhibit the germination and growth of plants, which have been considered as potential strategy for drug development of environmentally friendly biological herbicides. Obviously, the discovery of plant materials with extensive sources, low cost and markedly allelopathic effect will have far-reaching ecological impacts as the biological herbicide. At present, a large number of researches have already reported that certain plant-derived alle

Allelopathic potential of oil seed crops in production of crops: a review.

Agricultural production enhancement has been realized by more consumption of fossil energy such as fertilizer and agrochemicals. However, the production provides the present human with sufficient and diversified commodities, but at the same time, deprives in some extent the resources from the future human as well. In the other hand, it is known that synthetic herbicides face worldwide threats to human's health and environment as well. Therefore, it is a great challenge for agricultural sustainable development. The current review has been focussed on various oilseed crop species which launch ef

Allelopathic Effects of Sorghum/Sorghum-Sudangrass Hybrids Against Rotylenchulus reniformis.

Reniform nematode (Rotylenchulus reniformis) is a damaging and difficult-to-manage pest on many agricultural crops. Sorghum and sorghum-sudangrass hybrids (SSgHs) have shown potential in managing plant-parasitic nematodes by releasing toxic hydrogen cyanide gas through the hydrolysis of dhurrin, a cyanogenic glucoside found in leaf epidermal cells. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of different SSgH varieties and their age on the suppression of R. reniformis and to quantify their dhurrin contents. Shoot biomass of seven SSgH varieties was harvested at 1, 2, and 3 months

Toxin-assisted micropredation: experimental evidence shows that contact micropredation rather than exotoxicity is the role of Prymnesium toxins.

Blooms of Prymnesium parvum can severely harm fish and zooplankton, presumably through the release of allelopathic exotoxins that offer advantages for Prymnesium in its interactions with competitors and prey. We show that Prymnesium attaches to zooplankton and fish, causing mortality, whereas exposure of these organisms to Prymnesium across a permeable membrane does not cause mortality. We also show that Prymnesium exotoxins are released independently of contact toxicity only in response to experimental procedures or natural causes of stress. Our results are consistent with the idea that toxin

Allelopathic Effects and Cytotoxic Mechanism of Juniperus sabina Essential Oil via Inhibition of Cell Division in Model Plant Species.

Juniperus sabina is a dominant species in the desert and mountain ecosystems. There have been reports evaluating its chemical composition and biochemical values, however, investigation on its allelopathic effect which might facilitate its dominance remains largely unexplored, with the major responsible allelochemicals undetermined. In this study, we compared the allelopathic effects of the aqueous extract, ethanol extract, as well as the essential oil (EO) of J. sabina on seed germination and seedling growth of two receiver species, the dicot plant lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and the monocot plan

Positive allelopathic effects of Cornus controversa litter on soil phosphatase activity and seedling growth in the endangered tree Davidia involucrata.

Allelopathic interactions between associated tree species can shape seedling establishment, resource acquisition and long-term coexistence. However, the mechanisms underlying such interactions in endangered plants remain underexplored. In this study, we aimed to elucidate whether and how aqueous litter extracts from Cornus controversa Hemsl. influence the growth performance and nutrient acquisition in Davidia involucrata Baill., a relict and endangered tree species in China. Seedlings were treated with distilled water (control), branch litter extract, leaf litter extract or a mixture of both a

Allelopathic effect of the methanol extract of the weed species-red sorrel (Rumex acetosella L.) on the growth, phytohormone content and antioxidant activity of the cover crop - white clover (Trifolium repens L.).

Allelopathy is a biological process in which one organism releases biochemicals that affect the growth and development of other organisms. The current investigation sought to determine the allelopathic effect of Rumex acetosella on white clover (Trifolium repens) growth and development by using its shoot extract (lower IC50 value) as a foliar treatment. Here, different concentrations (25, 50, 100, and 200 g/L) of shoot extract from Rumex acetosella were used as treatments. With increasing concentrations of shoot extract, the plant growth parameters, chlorophyll and total protein content of Tri

Effects of the bloom of harmful benthic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis cf. ovata on the microphytobenthos community in the northern Adriatic Sea.

Composition and temporal variation of the microphytobenthos communities of the Conero Riviera (northern Adriatic Sea) were investigated in the course of an annual cycle, focusing on their relationships with blooms of the benthic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis cf. ovata. Sampling was carried out from March 2009 to March 2010 on undisturbed benthic substrata (macroalgae and pebbles). Samples for the study of microphytobenthos were collected with a monthly frequency, while those for the study of Ostreopsis bloom weekly. Benthic diatoms dominated the microphytobenthos communities for most of the annual

Lapachol, a naphthoquinone identified through chemical screening, inhibits plant immunity.

Quinones, a ubiquitous class of organic compounds produced in all kingdoms of life, are recognized for their diverse biological functions. In plants, quinones are implicated in allelopathy, where they act as allelochemicals influencing the growth and development of neighboring plants, of which one well-documented role of quinone is in the induction of haustoria of parasitic plant roots. In this study, through an immune marker gene-based chemical biology screening, we identified Lapachol, a naphthoquinone originally isolated from species of the Bignoniaceae family. Lapachol suppresses elicitor-

Allelopathic compound 2-methoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone is broadly effective against pathogenic Prototheca species in vitro and in vivo.

Unpigmented, yeast-like Prototheca algae are emerging pathogens responsible for unusual infections in humans and animals. Their treatment is often unsuccessful, as traditional antifungals and antibacterials show unsatisfactory activity against Prototheca. Therefore, the development of improved drugs that consider the peculiarities of algal biology is needed. Here, we describe a novel anti-Prototheca compound, the 2-methoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone, identified among molecules known to mediate plant and algal allelopathy. The 2-methoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone was highly active in vitro against a range of P

[Inhibitory effect of Gracilaria lemaneformis (Bory) Weber Bosse on the co-cultured Scrippsiella trochoidea (Stein) Loeblich III under controlled laboratory conditions].

The inhibitory effects of Grcilaria lemaneiformis on the co-cultured Scrippsiella trochoidea were determined under controlled laboratory conditions, and the possible mechanism was studied. Results showed that: (1) in the separating S. trochoiea-G. lemaneormis co-culture system when the initial cell density of C. lemaneaonis was set at 0.5 g x L(-1), the growth of S. trochoidea was obviously inhibited and its maximum cell density and exponential phase were decreased compared with the control; however, the inhibitory effect was not as strong as that in the direct cell-cell contact co-culture. Rutin-Mediated Priming of Plant Resistance to Three Bacterial Pathogens Initiating the Early SA Signal Pathway.

Flavonoids are ubiquitous in the plant kingdom and have many diverse functions, including UV protection, auxin transport inhibition, allelopathy, flower coloring and insect resistance. Here we show that rutin, a proud member of the flavonoid family, could be functional as an activator to improve plant disease resistances. Three plant species pretreated with 2 mM rutin were found to enhance resistance to Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae, Ralstonia solanacearum, and Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato strain DC3000 in rice, tobacco and Arabidopsis thaliana respectively. While they were normally propaga

Allelopathic inhibition of harmful algae by mangrove leaf extracts under contrasting habitats and algal densities.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) increase with intensified coastal eutrophication, underscoring the need for environmentally friendly control strategies. Mangrove-derived allelochemicals can regulate HABs, yet variability among plant and algal species remains unclear. This study compared the allelopathic inhibition of aqueous leaf extracts from three mangrove species (Aegiceras corniculatum, Avicennia marina and Kandelia obovata) on two HAB dinoflagellates, Scrippsiella trochoidea and Alexandrium catenella. Leaves collected from two mangrove wetlands in southern China, Futian (FT) and Dapeng (DP),

Allelopathic effect of the ethanol extract and fractions of the aerial parts of Lippia alba (Verbenaceae).

Lippia alba, belonging to the Verbenaceae family, is one of the most commonly utilized medicinal plants in folk medicine. The allelopathic activity was assessed using seeds of Lactuca sativa (lettuce) and Allium cepa (onion) by assessing the growth of the radicle and hypocotyl. The tests showed allelopathic efficiency in inhibiting the growth of lettuce and onion seeds. The best results for allelopathic activity were presented by the dichloromethane (DCM) fraction of the fresh plant, which inhibited radicle (23.04-100% lettuce and 64.17-66.36% onion) and hypocotyl (16.77-100% lettuce and 65.10
