Cooperative Networks: Altruism, Group Solidarity, Reciprocity, and Sanctioning in Ugandan Producer Organizations.

Repeated interaction and social networks are commonly considered viable solutions to collective action problems. This article identifies and systematically measures four general mechanisms--that is, generalized altruism, group solidarity, reciprocity, and the threat of sanctioning--and tests which of them brings about cooperation in the context of Ugandan producer organizations. Using an innovative methodological framework that combines "lab-in-the-field" experiments with survey interviews and complete social networks data, the article goes beyond the assessment of a relationship between socia

Possible genetic and epigenetic links between human inner speech, schizophrenia and altruism.

Unique mental abilities have been crucial for evolutionary success of Homo sapiens and for the development of his complex social organization. However, these abilities have also become a target for mental disorders which often result in a reduced fitness and in conflicts between the individual and the conventions of society. To account for this evolutionary maladaptation, we advance a new concept: that of "mis-exaptation", derived from SJ Gould and E Vrba's concept of exaptation. Mis-exaptation is a characteristic which, although it may confer positive effects in one field of activity, may rea

Brain macrostructure correlates of financial altruism in older adults without dementia.

Greater financial altruism (i.e., the tendency to give money to an anonymous individual) has been previously associated with poorer performance on neuropsychological tests sensitive to cognitive changes occurring in early Alzheimer’s disease (AD). While these findings provide initial support for the idea that financial altruism may be associated with early AD-related brain changes, no study has used MRI to investigate structural brain correlates of financial altruism in older adults. To address this gap in the literature, the current study investigated associations between brain macrostructure

Organ harvests from the legally incompetent: an argument against compelled altruism.

Organ transplants may offer the best hope of long term survival for individuals afflicted with certain cancers or other debilitating diseases. The hope that a transplant may inspire in an organ recipient should not, however, be the determinative factor when the proposed source of the organ is incompetent. Competent adults are not compelled to act altruistically by undergoing a surgical invasion for the benefit of third parties. Children and mentally incompetent adults should likewise be protected from such compelled altruism. Case by case adjudication of petitions to harvest organs from incomp

Helper Syndrome and Pathological Altruism in nurses - a study in times of the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Pathological Altruism and the concept of Helper Syndrome are comparable. We focused on Schmidbauer's description because it provides a comprehensive and testable definition. Nevertheless, this concept of Helper Syndrome has not yet been empirically investigated in a sample of helping professionals. AIM: To investigate whether nurses working with covid-19 patients are more likely to have Helper Syndrome compared with individuals from non-helper professions. METHODS: The online survey took place between April 2021 and February 2022, in urban and rural regions of Salzburg, during th

Toxic money or paid altruism: the meaning of payments for identity-release gamete donors.

Public discourses commonly frame gamete, organ and other forms of bodily donation as altruistic 'gifts'. However, despite on-going debates about the ethics of payments to donors, few studies have examined the views of donors themselves regarding the meaning of payments and their compatibility (or not) with understandings of these practices as gifts. This article addresses this issue, analysing 24 in-depth interviews with UK identity-release gamete donors. It was crucial to all participants that their donation be viewed as fundamentally other-oriented, motivated by the desire to help others. Ho

Mechanism of altruism approach to blood donor recruitment and retention: a review and future directions.

Why do people donate blood? Altruism is the common answer. However, altruism is a complex construct and to answer this question requires a systematic analysis of the insights from the biology, economics and psychology of altruism. I term this the mechanism of altruism (MOA) approach and apply it here for understanding blood donor motivation. The answer also has enormous implications for the type of interventions we choose to adopt as a society. A MOA approach so far shows that blood donors are a mixture of (i) warm-glow givers (donation is emotionally rewarding) and (ii) reluctant altruists (c

Quantifying the altruism value for a rare pediatric disease: Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

OBJECTIVES: To quantify the magnitude of altruism value as applied to a hypothetical new treatment for a rare, severe pediatric disease: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). STUDY DESIGN: Prospective survey of individuals not planning to have children in the future. METHODS: A survey was administered to US adults (aged ≥ 21 years) not intending to have a child in the future to elicit willingness to pay (WTP) for government insurance coverage for a new hypothetical DMD treatment that improves mortality and morbidity relative to the current standard of care. Neural substrates of male parochial altruism are modulated by testosterone and behavioral strategy.

Parochial altruism refers to ingroup favoritism and outgroup hostility and has recently been linked to testosterone. Here, we investigated the neurobiological mechanism of parochial altruism in male soccer fans playing the ultimatum game (UG) against ingroup and outgroup members (i.e., fans of the favorite or of a rivalling team) using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Our results suggest that individual differences in altruistic tendency influence the tendency for parochialism. While altruistic subjects rejected unfair offers independent of team membership, the more self-oriented 'pro-se

The mentalizing network orchestrates the impact of parochial altruism on social norm enforcement.

Parochial altruism--a preference for altruistic behavior towards ingroup members and mistrust or hostility towards outgroup members--is a pervasive feature in human society and strongly shapes the enforcement of social norms. Since the uniqueness of human society critically depends on the enforcement of norms, the understanding of the neural circuitry of the impact of parochial altruism on social norm enforcement is key, but unexplored. To fill this gap, we measured brain activity with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while subjects had the opportunity to punish ingroup members and

Anorexia Nervosa and First-Person Perspective: Altruism, Family System, and Body Experience.

Based on the case study of Jeanne, the objective of this article is to study patterns of specific subjectivity in anorexic subjects. We seek to identify, in a first-person perspective, the core vulnerability features of anorexic existence, beyond the dimension of food alone. The identification of a psychopathological structure results in a better understanding of Jeanne's clinical situation and helps formulate psychotherapeutic and prophylactic recommendations. We suggest that so-called "denial" is a psychological mechanism that should be reconsidered. Denial is not a mechanism pertaining to a

Beyond Altruism: Framing Organ Donation in a 19-year Review of Chinese News Coverage.

Despite a significant legal transformation of the organ donation system in China, the public's willingness to become organ donors remains low. This study provides the first empirical examination of how Chinese newspaper coverage reflects the complex interplay among multifaceted factors associated with the stagnant donation rate. Using framing as the primary theoretical lens, we analyzed 923 organ donation newspaper articles from 2000 to 2018 in terms of topics, facilitators and barriers, valence, and policy development. The three most common topics emphasized were: a new official information r

Data altruism and the "consent" question: a study into the "consent" models used under the GDPR and how the data altruism mechanism can act as a potential solution for the research community in the reuse of health data.

INTRODUCTION: The General Data Protection Regulation ("GDPR") legal basis for obtaining consent for the processing of personal data for research purposes, where those purposes cannot be fully specified in advance, is provided for in Articles 6, 7 and Recital 33. However, GDPR's requirements for obtaining consent, as to the secondary use and sharing of data in research, have been argued to have generated confusion, whilst the conflicts between the Regulation itself, its practical application and research ethics are well-documented (1). The requirements for "informed consent", as defined within

Modulating the Activity of the Right Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex Alters Altruism in Situations of Advantageous Inequity.

Altruism is highly valued and cherished by human society. However, human preferences and behavior are sensitive to inequality considerations. Currently, remarkably little is known about the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the process of altruistic acts in inequity situations. Therefore, to clarify the causal role of the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC) in altruism during situations of advantageous and disadvantageous inequity, we applied transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to demonstrate the involvement of the rDLPFC in altruism in situations of inequity. A total

Swedish sperm donors are driven by altruism, but shortage of sperm donors leads to reproductive travelling.

BACKGROUND: Swedish legislation requires that sperm donors are identifiable to offspring. In Denmark sperm donors remain anonymous. The aim of this study was to examine sperm donation in Sweden by identifying socio-demographic backgrounds, motivations and attitudes among donors and to describe options and plans of sperm recipients. Furthermore, the willingness of Swedish health care providers to assist in treatment abroad, where sperm from an anonymous donor were to be used, was assessed. The extent of travelling to Denmark for reproductive purposes was also examined. METHODS: Thirty Swedish

A Model of Perfectionism, Moral Disengagement, Altruism, and Antisocial and Prosocial Behaviors in Wheelchair Athletes.

Two forms of perfectionism were examined in the present study to see whether they predicted prosocial and antisocial behaviors in sport through moral disengagement and altruism in a sample of 327 wheelchair basketball and rugby athletes (M = 33.57 years, SD = 10.51; 83% male). Using structural equation modeling, the following significant direct and indirect effects were found. First, perfectionistic strivings positively predicted perceived prosocial behaviors and altruism. Second, perfectionistic concerns negatively predicted altruism and prosocial behaviors and positively predicted moral dise

[Reciprocal altruism--the resurrection of an old ethical principle in the Israeli organ transplant law].

The new Israeli Organ Transplant Law grants priority in organ allocation to candidates for transplantation who have registered as organ donors at least 3 years prior to being listed or have been Live organ donors or have a first degree relative who has been a deceased donor. This unique law resurrects the old ethical principle of reciprocal altruism in which each partner in society helps the other while he helps himself. The altruist benefits because in time he, in turn, is helped. The law aims to eliminate the "free riding" phenomenon of candidates for organ transplantation who do not accept

Misperceiving peers: Altruism moderates the association between perceived and peer-reported pro-environmental behavior.

Environmental degradation is a complex issue driven by human activities, highlighting the key role of pro-environmental behavior (PEB) in reducing and mitigating the negative impacts of human activities on the environment. Previous research has illustrated that social norms are important for predicting PEB. However, people tend to misperceive the degree to which others engage in environmental behaviors. In this study, respondents were recruited at beaches in the Valparaiso Region, central Chile. The surveyor approached individuals who were staying at the beach with a peer. We recruited a sampl

Defining and measuring blood donor altruism: a theoretical approach from biology, economics and psychology.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: While blood donation is traditionally described as a behaviour motivated by pure altruism, the assessment of altruism in the blood donation literature has not been theoretically informed. Drawing on theories of altruism from psychology, economics and evolutionary biology, it is argued that a theoretically derived psychometric assessment of altruism is needed. Such a measure is developed in this study that can be used to help inform both our understanding of the altruistic motives of blood donors and recruitment intervention strategies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross
