Use of wastewater alum-coagulation sludge as a phosphorus fertiliser - a mini review.

The use of aluminium (Al) salts, particularly alum, in coagulation is a widespread and conventional treatment method for eliminating pollutants, including phosphorus (P) which can cause eutrophication, from wastewater. However, a significant challenge of this process is the substantial amount of sludge generated, necessitating proper disposal. Historically, land disposal has been a common practice, but it poses potential issues for plant life on these lands. Despite the associated drawbacks, sludge contains elevated concentrations of vital plant nutrients like P and nitrogen, presenting an opp

Use of water treatment plant sludge in high-rate activated sludge systems: A techno-economic investigation.

Coagulants such as aluminum sulfate (Al2(SO4)3 (alum)) and ferric chloride (FeCl3) used in water treatment plants (WTPs) led to the generation of sludge that is usually disposed to landfills. However, the utilization of WTP sludge is being encouraged by authorities to achieve sustainable development. This study aims to investigate WTP sludge utilization in a pilot-scale high-rate activated sludge (HRAS) system as a substitute for conventional coagulants. Based on jar tests, the iron sludge was selected for pilot-scale testing due to its superior ability to enhance the treatment efficiency of t

Long-term effects of alum-treated litter, untreated litter and NH4NO3 application on phosphorus speciation, distribution and reactivity in soils using K-edge XANES and chemical fractionation.

Whereas soil test information on the fertility and chemistry of soils has been important to elaborate safe and sound agricultural practices, micro-scale information can give a whole extra dimension to understand the chemical processes occurring in soils. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects that the consecutive application of untreated poultry litter, alum-treated litter or ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) had on P solubility in soils over 20 years. For this, we used soil test data, sequential chemical fractionation (SCF) of P, and P K-edge XANES and μ-fluorescence spectroscopies.

Phosphorus fractions and speciation in an alkaline, manured soil amended with alum, gypsum, and Epsom salt.

Snowmelt runoff is a dominant pathway of phosphorus (P) losses from agricultural lands in cold climatic regions. Soil amendments effectively reduce P losses from soils by converting P to less soluble forms; however, changes in P speciation in cold climatic regions with fall-applied amendments have not been investigated. This study evaluated P composition in soils from a manured field with fall-amended alum (Al2(SO4)3·18H2O), gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O), or Epsom salt (MgSO4·7H2O) using three complementary methods: sequential P fractionation, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-rays (

Reducing Phosphorus Runoff and Leaching from Poultry Litter with Alum: Twenty-Year Small Plot and Paired-Watershed Studies.

Treating poultry litter with alum has been shown to lower ammonia (NH) emissions and phosphorus (P) runoff losses. Two long-term studies were conducted to assess the effects of alum-treated poultry litter on P availability, leaching, and runoff under pasture conditions. From 1995 to 2015, litter was applied annually in a paired watershed study comparing alum-treated and untreated litter and in a small plot study comparing 13 treatments (an unfertilized control, four rates of alum-treated litter, four rates of untreated litter, and four rates of NHNO). In the paired watershed study, total P loa

The removal of kaolinite suspensions by acid-soluble and water-soluble chitosans.

Chitosan is a potential substitute for traditional aluminium salts in water treatment systems. This research compared the coagulant performance of acid-soluble chitosan with water-soluble chitosan and with coagulant mixtures of chitosan and aluminium sulfate (alum). We also assessed the coagulant performance of chitosan and poly-aluminium chloride (PAC) to remove kaolinite from turbid water. In addition, we evaluated their respective coagulation efficiencies under different coagulant concentrations, degrees of turbidity (NTU) and pH levels. Furthermore, we determined the size and settling velo

Performance evaluation and prediction for a pilot two-stage on-site constructed wetland system employing dewatered alum sludge as main substrate.

Dewatered alum sludge, a widely generated by-product of drinking water treatment plants using aluminium salts as coagulants was used as main substrate in a pilot on-site constructed wetland system treating agricultural wastewater for 11 months. Treatment performance was evaluated and spreadsheet analysis was used to establish correlations between water quality variables. Results showed that removal rates (in g/m(2)d) of 4.6-249.2 for 5 day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD(5)), 35.6-502.0 for chemical oxygen demand (COD), 2.5-14.3 for total phosphorus (TP) and 2.7-14.6 for phosphate (PO(4)P) were

A comparative study of coagulation, granular- and powdered-activated carbon for the removal of perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluorooctanoate in drinking water treatment.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) are persistent organic pollutants in the environment and their occurrence causes toxicological effects on humans. We examined different conventional coagulant treatments such as alum, ferric chloride and polyaluminium chloride in removing these compounds. These were then compared with a natural coagulant (Moringa oleifera). We also investigated the powdered-activated carbon (PAC) and granular-activated carbon (GAC) for removing these compounds. At an initial dose of 5 mg/L, polyaluminium chloride led to a higher reduction of PFOS/P

Effects of chemical amendments on the lability and speciation of metals in anaerobically digested biosolids.

The interaction of inorganic contaminants present in biosolids with iron, aluminum, and manganese oxy/hydroxides has been advocated as a key mechanism limiting their bioavailability. In this study, we investigated whether this is indeed the case, and further, whether it can be exploited to produce optimized biosolids products through the addition of chemical additives during sewage sludge processing. Experiments were conducted to investigate whether the addition of iron- and aluminum-based amendments (at 5 different rates) during the anaerobic digestion phase of wastewater treatment can effect

Using calcium silicate nanoparticles to reduce phosphorus solubility in poultry litter treated with alum or sodium bisulfate.

Treating poultry litter with alum is a best management practice (BMP) used to reduce ammonia (NH3) volatilization and phosphorus (P) runoff and leaching. However, recently we have observed that alum additions to litter have not always reduced soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP). The objectives of this research were (1) to determine why alum additions to litter occasionally fail to reduce SRP and (2) to determine if aluminum (Al), calcium (Ca), and/or iron (Fe) nanoparticles applied alone or in combination with dry acids used for NH3 control (alum or sodium bisulfate) would reduce SRP in litter.

Appraisal and ranking of poly-aluminium chloride, ferric chloride and alum for the treatment of dairy soiled water.

Land spreading of dairy soiled water (DSW) may result in pollution of ground and surface waters. Treatment of DSW through sludge-supernatant separation using chemical coagulants is a potential option to reduce the negative environmental impacts of DSW. The aims of this study were to (1) assess the effectiveness of three chemical coagulants - poly-aluminium chloride (PACl), ferric chloride (FeCl3) and alum - in improving effluent quality, and (2) assess the properties of the sludge that is generated as by-product from the process for its suitability for land application. Taking into considerati

Enhanced removal of heavy metals in primary treatment using coagulation and flocculation.

The goal of this study was to determine the removal efficiencies of chromium, copper, lead, nickel, and zinc from raw wastewater by chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT) and to attain a total suspended solids removal goal of 80%. Operating parameters and chemical doses were optimized by bench-scale tests. Locally obtained raw wastewater samples were spiked with heavy metal solutions to obtain representative concentrations of metals in wastewater. Jar tests were conducted to compare the metals removal efficiencies of the chemical treatment options using ferric chloride, alum, and anionic

Solid phosphorus phase in aluminum- and iron-treated biosolids.

Stabilization of phosphorus (P) in sewage sludge (biosolids) to reduce water-soluble P concentrations is essential for minimizing P loss from amended soils and maximizing the capacity of the soil to safely serve as an outlet for this waste material. The chemical form at which P is retained in biosolids stabilized by Al(2)(SO(4))(3) x 18H(2)O (alum) or FeSO(4) x 7H(2)O (FeSul) was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray elemental spectrometry (EDXS) and by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Both treatments resulted in the formation of a Ca-P phase, probabl

Bronchial anaphylaxis in actively sensitized Sprague Dawley rats: studies on mediators involved.

Previous experiments have shown that SD rats actively sensitized to ovalbumin (OA) undergo bronchial anaphylaxis at intravenous challenge with a specific antigen. The inhibitory effect of antiallergic drugs in this experimental system and the relation of the response to serum reaginic antibody levels, depend on sensitization conditions (Dahlbäck 1981; Dahlbäck et al. 1982). The present experiments indicate that the main primary mediators of the respiratory anaphylaxis are serotonin and product(s) of the cyclooxygenase pathway of arachidonic acid metabolism. This is the case whether the animals

Adjuvants approved for human use: What do we know and what do we need to know for designing good adjuvants?

Adjuvants represent one of the most significant biotechnological solutions regarding vaccine development, thereby broadening the amount of candidates which can now be used and tested in vaccine formulations targeting various pathogens, as antigens which were previously discarded due to their low or null immunogenicity can now be included. Adjuvant development research has grown side-by-side with an increasing body of knowledge regarding immune systems and their recognition of foreign microorganisms. Alum-derived adjuvants were used in human vaccines for many years, even though complete underst

Phosphorus adsorption characteristics of oyster shells and alum sludge and their application for nutrient control in constructed wetland system.

This research aimed to evaluate the feasibility of employing some locally available oyster shells (OS) and alum sludge (AS) as the P adsorption media of constructed wetland beds. The batch and column tests were conducted with different sizes of OS and AS to observe the P adsorption characteristics and breakthrough, while P adsorption rates were determined from jar test. From the batch test, the ability to adsorb the amount of added P was different considerably between OS and AS media and sizes. At the same size, the P adsorption capacities of OS were higher than those of alum sludge. The P ads
