Maximum contaminant levels are used to control potential health hazards posed by chemicals in drinking water, but no primary national or international limits for aluminum (Al) have been adopted. Given the differences in toxicological profiles, the present evaluation derives total allowable concentrations for certain water-soluble inorganic Al compounds (including chloride, hydroxide, oxide, phosphate and sulfate) and for the hydrated Al silicates (including attapulgite, bentonite/montmorillonite, illite, kaolinite) in drinking water. The chemistry, toxicology and clinical experience with Al ma

Aluminum accumulation in plasma and tissues is a well-described complication among persons undergoing peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis. Excess bone aluminum is associated with low bone formation rates and increased risk for fractures. Current recommendations for care of patients with end-stage renal disease include screening for aluminum toxicity with plasma aluminum levels; patients with levels below 40 microg/L are considered to be at low risk for aluminum bone disease (ABD). We examined data from the Toronto Renal Osteodystrophy Study to evaluate the performance of plasma aluminum levels

The optimal control of aluminium content in dialysis fluids has resulted in a decrease in the incidence of aluminium related bone disease (ARBD) and in the risk for aluminium toxicity. Nevertheless the problem has not disappeared. Bone biopsy with specific staining for Al remains the only reliable method for the diagnosis of ARBD. Currently there is not a total agreement on the reliability of serum Al levels and of the DFO test in the identification of patients with Al overload or toxicity. In a series of patients (mean age 48 +/- 14 years old) from our hemodialysis units we carried out bone b

Twenty eight (14%) out of 196 patients in a regional dialysis population were found to have serum aluminum levels greater than or equal to 5 mumol/L or 135 micrograms/L; 21 consented to undergo a bone biopsy to identify the spectrum of renal osteodystrophy associated with this degree of hyperaluminemia. Both the Aluminon reagent and the acid solochrome azurine (ASA) stain were used to identify aluminum deposits. A control group of 13 patients with biochemical and histological evidence of severe secondary hyperparathyroidism was used to contrast the measured parameters of bone histology in the

Complexes of reducing hydride ligands by high-oxidation state cerium are unknown due to the fundamental mismatch in their redox chemistry. Herein we report the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of the first example of a Ce4+ aluminum hydride complex. Synthetic strategies adapted from the preparation of Ce4+ alkyl complexes facilitated the isolation of [Ce4+(κ2-H3AlC(TMS)3)(NP(tBu)3)3] (CeHAl). The bonding and structure of this complex is characterized by single-crystal XRD, NMR, and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, and DFT computations. The fundamental reactivity profile is evaluated by cycl

BACKGROUND: Workers in aluminum production plants are occupationally exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including the neurotoxicant benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), as well as to aluminum dust and fumes. While the physical health effects are established, the psychological impact, particularly on anxiety, remains less explored. This study investigated the associations of urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP), a biomarker of PAHs exposure, and urinary aluminum levels with anxiety symptoms in aluminum workers.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 260 participants (130 exposed workers and 130

Whilst being environmentally abundant, aluminum is not essential for life. On the contrary, aluminum is a widely recognized neurotoxin that inhibits more than 200 biologically important functions and causes various adverse effects in plants, animals, and humans. The relationship between aluminum exposure and neurodegenerative diseases, including dialysis encephalopathy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinsonism dementia in the Kii Peninsula and Guam, and Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been suggested. In particular, the link between aluminum and Alzheimer's disease has been the subject of sc

Secondary aluminum melting is mainly performed in sand, die, and static die-casting foundries and remelting plants. In seven Swedish foundries and two remelting plants, the exposure and area concentrations of total dust, metals, organic gases, and vapors were determined mainly as daily, time-weighted averages (TWAs). For most combinations of jobs and agents, the exposure levels were well below the current threshold limits suggested by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). However, high exposure levels of mineral oil mist (geometric mean [GM] = 0.6 mg/m3) were o

Previous studies have shown that excess dietary Al during development can affect neurobehavioral measures and decrease tissue Mn of 21-day-old weanling mice without a corresponding increase in tissue Al concentrations. Al and Mn have similar tissue concentrations and similar affinities for transferrin, which is the major plasma transport protein for Al and Mn as well as Fe. In the present study, brain Al, Mn and Fe were studied at 6, 12, 18 and 24 days of age in offspring of Swiss Webster mice fed a semipurified diet containing excess Al (Al[+], 1000 micrograms Al/g diet, Al as Al lactate), ma

Aluminum is the third most common element on Earth´s crust and despite its wide use in our workaday life it has been associated with several health risks after overexposure. In the present study the impact of aluminum salts upon ABC transporter activity was studied in the P-GP-expressing human blood-brain barrier cell line hCMEC/D3, in MDCKII cells overexpressing BCRP and MRP2, respectively, and in freshly isolated, functionally intact kidney tubules from Atlantic killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus), which express the analog ABC transporters, P-gp, Bcrp and Mrp2. In contrast to previous findings

Aluminum is a nonessential metal to which humans are frequently exposed. Aluminum in the food supply comes from natural sources, water used in food preparation, food ingredients, and utensils used during food preparations. The amount of aluminum in the diet is small, compared with the amount of aluminum in antacids and some buffered analgesics. The healthy human body has effective barriers (skin, lungs, gastrointestinal tract) to reduce the systemic absorption of aluminum ingested from water, foods, drugs, and air. The small amount of aluminum (<1%) that is systemically absorbed is excreted pr

Since 1986, benign prostatic hyperplasia has been treated with lasers, but clinical use was not practical until the right-angled fiber was developed in the early 1990s. The neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser is one of four types available for treating the prostate. Laser energy levels can be adjusted to provide coagulation (at lower energy densities) or vaporization (at higher energy densities). In a randomized study of these two techniques, symptom scores were similar at 1-year follow-up, but the peak urinary flow rate was higher and the reoperation rate was lower in the patient

Aluminum phosphide (ALP) is highly toxic to the lungs, heart and blood vessels causing pulmonary edema, shock and arrhythmias. There is massive focal myocardial damage resulting in raised cardiac enzymes. This study included 92 patients of proven ALP poisoning. The age varied between 20-50 years and the majority (74) were females. Clinical manifestations were nausea and vomiting (92), dyspnea and palpitation (72 each), cyanosis (54), hypotension (32) and shock (46) etc. Cardiac arrhythmias were present in 80 cases and hypermagnesemia in 78 patients. Mean serum magnesium level (1.95 +/- 0.18 mE

Aluminum is now recognised as an important toxin causing considerable morbidity and mortality, particularly in patients with chronic renal failure. Diseases that have been associated with aluminium include dialysis dementia, renal osteodystrophy and Alzheimer's disease. Aluminum also has an effect on red blood cells, parathyroid glands and chromosomes. Accumulation of aluminium in the body tends to occur when the gastrointestinal barrier is circumvented. This has been identified as a problem during dialysis or intravenous fluid administration. Renal functional impairment results in decreased a

Aluminum exposure in man is unavoidable. The occurrence of dialysis dementia, vitamin D-resistant osteomalacia, and hypochromic microcytic anemia in dialysis patients underscores the potential for aluminum toxicity. Although exposure via dialysate and hyperalimentation leads to significant tissue aluminum accumulation, the ubiquitous occurrence of aluminum and the severe pathology associated with large aluminum burdens suggest that smaller exposures via the gastrointestinal tract and lungs could represent an important, though largely unrecognized, public health problem. It is clear that some a

Seedlings of aluminum-tolerant 'Xuegan' (Citrus sinensis) and Al-intolerant 'sour pummelo' (Citrus grandis) were fertigated for 18 weeks with nutrient solution containing 0 and 1.2 mM AlCl₃·6H₂O. Al toxicity-induced inhibition of photosynthesis and the decrease of total soluble protein only occurred in C. grandis leaves, demonstrating that C. sinensis had higher Al tolerance than C. grandis. Using isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ), we obtained more Al toxicity-responsive proteins from C. sinensis than from C. grandis leaves, which might be responsible for the highe

Metal powders or dusts can represent significant dust explosion hazards in industry, due to their relatively low ignition energy and high explosivity. The hazard is well known in industries that produce or use aluminum powders, but is sometimes not recognized by facilities that produce aluminum dust as a byproduct of bulk aluminum processing. As demonstrated by the 2003 dust explosion at aluminum wheel manufacturer Hayes Lemmerz, facilities that process bulk metals are at risk due to dust generated during machining and finishing operations [U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board,

In this study, the sensitivity of the aurine tricarboxylic acid (ATA) and acid solochrome azurine (ASA) stain for aluminum were compared under special consideration of the relationship to bone histology in renal osteodystrophy. Al deposition in iliac crest bone biopsies taken from 78 patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) was assessed histochemically using the ATA and ASA stain; the Al accumulation was correlated with bone histology and histomorphometry. Significantly more Al was detectable with the ASA method on trabecular bone surfaces and cement lines (18 +/- 20% vs 4 +/- 12% on surfaces
