Nano-curcumin mitigates aluminum oxide nanoparticle toxicity in Nile tilapia through antioxidant and immune modulation.

Our study investigated the toxicological effects of aluminum oxide nanoparticles (Al2O3-NPs) and the potential protective role of dietary nano-curcumin (N-CUR) in juvenile Oreochromis niloticus (30.39 ± 0.05 g) under controlled experimental conditions. It was hypothesized that N-CUR could mitigate the adverse impacts of Al2O3-NPs on growth, biochemical, oxidative, and histopathological parameters. A total of 180 O. niloticus were divided into six groups: a control group, two N-CUR-supplemented diets (40 and 50 mg/kg), an Al2O3-NP-exposed group (10 mg/L), and two co-treated groups receiving bot

Zinc-aluminum layered double hydroxide and double oxide for room-temperature oxidation of sulfur dioxide gas.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas at trace levels challenges the consumption of fuel gases and cleaning of flue gases originating from diverse anthropogenic sources. We have demonstrated Zn-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) and layered double oxide (LDO) as low-cost and effective adsorbents in removing lowly concentrated SO2 gas at room temperature. Water in the adsorbent bed significantly improved the performance, where the maximum adsorption capacity of 38.0 mg g-1 was achieved for LDO. Based on the spectroscopic findings, the adsorbed gas molecules were oxidized to surface-bound sulfate/bisulfate sp

Advanced Optimization of Optical Carbon Dioxide Sensor Through Sensitivity Enhancement in Anodic Aluminum Oxide Substrate.

The current research developed an optical carbon dioxide (CO2) sensor using anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) as the substrate. We developed an optical carbon dioxide (CO2) sensor utilizing CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) as the fluorescent dye and Phenol Red as the pH indicator. The QDs acted as the CO2-responsive fluorophore and were embedded in a polyimide butyl methacrylate (polyIBM) matrix. This sensing solution was applied to an anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) substrate, which provided a porous and stable platform for sensor fabrication. Photoluminescence measurements were conducted using the coat

Antibody-functionalized aluminum oxide-coated particles targeting neutrophil receptors in a multifrequency microfluidic impedance cytometer.

Personalized diagnostics of infectious diseases require monitoring disease progression due to their ever-changing physiological conditions and the multi-faceted organ system mechanisms involved in disease pathogenesis. In such instances, the recommended clinical strategies involve multiplexing data collection from critical biomarkers related to a patient's conditions along with longitudinal frequent patient monitoring. Numerous detection technologies exist both in research and commercial settings to monitor these conditions, however, they fail to provide biomarker multiplexing ability with des

FTIR investigation of adsorption and chemical decomposition of CCl4 by high surface-area aluminum oxide.

Chlorinated hydrocarbons are among the most recalcitrant pollutants for control by sorption or catalytic destruction. High surface-area alumina holds promise as a catalytic media as well as a component of other binary catalyst systems. We have prepared an alumina catalyst using the aerogel technique that has a very high surface area of 550 m2/g. This catalyst destroys carbon tetrachloride with an efficiency >99% at 400 degrees C. Its reactivity toward carbon tetrachloride is remarkably higher than that of commercial alumina, which has a surface area of 155 m2/g. Carbon dioxide is the major pro

Aluminum oxide nanoparticles mediated toxicity, loss of appendages in progeny of Drosophila melanogaster on chronic exposure.

Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles (NPs) have a wide number of applications which cause intentional and unintentional exposure to humans, making it important to understand the nano-bio interaction. In this study, we made an attempt to evaluate the toxic effects of Al2O3 NPs chronic exposure on Drosophila melanogaster. Flies were exposed to Al2O3 NPs at concentration 0.1 and 1 mM via ingestion throughout their lifespan and progeny flies were screened for behavioral and phenotypic abnormalities. Behavioral abnormalities in flies were recorded through larval crawling, climbing in flies and two

Mechanisms underlying the aluminum-induced potentiation of the pro-oxidant properties of transition metals.

Aluminum is known to enhance the ability of iron to promote the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) but the mechanism subserving this is unknown. In an attempt to understand the means by which this potentiation occurs, several types of experiment have been conducted. It was found that iron must be in the ferrous form for aluminum-based stimulation of ROS to take place in a cerebral cortical synaptosomal-mitochondrial fraction. The ability of other transition metals of varying valences, copper and chromium, to catalyze formation of ROS was also increased in the presence of aluminum. Cat

Sodium valproate ameliorates aluminum-induced oxidative stress and apoptosis of PC12 cells.

OBJECTIVES: According to recent studies, valproate shows some protection against oxidative stress (OS) induced by neurotoxins. Current investigation tried to determine the possible ameliorating effects of sodium valproate (SV) against aluminum (Al)-induced cell death, apoptosis, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and OS in PC12 cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this in vitro study, PC12 cells were treated with different concentrations of aluminum maltolate (Almal) with and without SV (50-400 µM). Cell viability was assessed by MTT assay. To measure quantitatively the effects of SV on Al-i

Removal of heavy metals from aluminum anodic oxidation wastewaters by membrane filtration.

Aluminum manufacturing has been reported as one of the largest industries and wastewater produced from the aluminum industry may cause significant environmental problems due to variable pH, high heavy metal concentration, conductivity, and organic load. The management of this wastewater with a high pollution load is of great importance for practitioners in the aluminum sector. There are hardly any studies available on membrane treatment of wastewater originated from anodic oxidation. The aim of this study is to evaluate the best treatment and reuse alternative for aluminum industry wastewater

Design of carbon-bimetallic oxide nanofiber cathodes with hybrid charge storage for advanced aluminum-ion batteries.

Aluminum-ion storage is a compelling Li-ion alternative due to high theoretical volumetric capacity (∼8040 mAh cm-3) and trivalent (Al3+) multi-electron redox reactions, enabling higher charge density and energy storage per unit volume. Additionally, aluminum is the third most abundant element in the Earth's crust, non-toxic, and costs ∼0.002 USD per Wh, making it a low-cost, sustainable alternative for large-scale grid and stationary energy storage. In this work, we designed a novel carbon-bimetallic oxide (V2O5/SnO2) nanofiber composite (Cx-V2O5-SnO2) as a cathode and evaluated its electroch

Molecular dynamics simulations of phosphonic acid-aluminum oxide self-organization and their evolution into ordered monolayers.

We outline an unprejudiced molecular dynamics simulation approach to study the mechanisms of self-organization encompassing the evolution of surfactant-surface interactions to the growth of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). Therein, the time-length scale problem is tackled by combining an efficient docking-type procedure for implementing surfactant-by-surfactant association with detailed molecular simulations to explore structural relaxation. For this, nanosecond-scale molecular dynamics simulations unravel ordering processes during the gradual assembly of the monolayer. Along this line, diffe

Detection of IFN-γ for latent tuberculosis diagnosis using an anodized aluminum oxide-based capacitive sensor.

We describe a rapid, sensitive, and label-free method to detect interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), a biomarker of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). IFN-γ is detected by measuring the capacitance change caused by its binding to an anti-IFN-γ antibody. The antibody is immobilized on the surface of an anodized aluminum oxide (AAO)-based capacitive sensor. With this technique, IFN-γ can be detected in the range of ~0.1 pg/ml to ~10 ng/ml, with a detection limit of 0.2 pg/ml. We have also measured the concentration of IFN-γ in clinical samples using the AAO-based capacitive sensor and compared this conc

Rapid susceptibility testing and microcolony analysis of Candida spp. cultured and imaged on porous aluminum oxide.

BACKGROUND: Acquired resistance to antifungal agents now supports the introduction of susceptibility testing for species-drug combinations for which this was previously thought unnecessary. For pathogenic yeasts, conventional phenotypic testing needs at least 24 h. Culture on a porous aluminum oxide (PAO) support combined with microscopy offers a route to more rapid results. METHODS: Microcolonies of Candida species grown on PAO were stained with the fluorogenic dyes Fun-1 and Calcofluor White and then imaged by fluorescence microscopy. Images were captured by a charge-coupled device camera a

Aluminum oxide nanoparticles induce neurodegeneration via oxidative stress, amyloidogenic pathway activation, and BDNF suppression in rat brain.

Aluminum oxide nanoparticles (Al₂O₃NPs) are used across industrial and consumer sectors, raising concerns about their potential neurotoxic effects. Despite growing application, the mechanisms underlying Al₂O₃NP-induced neurodegeneration remain poorly understood. This study investigated the mechanistic pathways of Al₂O₃NP neurotoxicity in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats exposed intraperitoneally to 15, 30, or 60 mg/kg Al₂O₃NPs for 60 days. Comprehensive analyses included hematological profiling, serum biochemistry, oxidative stress markers (MDA, Nrf2/Keap1), neurotransmitter assays (dopamine, ac

A miniature porous aluminum oxide-based flow-cell for online water quality monitoring using bacterial sensor cells.

The use of live bacterial reporters as sensing entities in whole-cell biosensors allows the investigation of the biological effects of a tested sample, as well as the bioavailability of its components. Here we present a proof of concept for a new design for online continuous water monitoring flow-cell biosensor, incorporating recombinant reporter bacteria, engineered to generate an optical signal (fluorescent or bioluminescent) in the presence of the target compound(s). At the heart of the flow-cell is a disposable chip made of porous aluminum oxide (PAO), which retains the sensor microorganis

Enhancement of phosphorus sorption onto light expanded clay aggregates by means of aluminum and iron oxide coatings.

Phosphorus (P) loading from non-point or point sources increases the eutrophication risk of natural waters. The functioning of constructed wetlands (CWs) used as natural water treatment systems can be improved by means of additional materials adsorbing soluble P. In this study, light expanded clay aggregates (LECA) and LECA coated with aluminum (Al) oxide (Al-LECA) or iron (Fe) oxide (Fe-LECA) were tested for their efficiency as P sorbents in the pH range 3-8. The oxide coatings duplicated the actual sorption capacity calculated from the sorption isotherms at the P concentration in the equilib

Bone tissue response to commercially pure titanium implants blasted with fine and coarse particles of aluminum oxide.

The present study compares the bone response to commercially pure titanium screws with two different degrees of surface roughness. Implants blasted with 25- and 250-micron particles of aluminum oxide were placed in rabbit tibiae after the surface roughness of the implants had been measured. After 4 weeks, there was a significantly higher bone-to-metal contact for implants blasted with 25-micron particles compared to those blasted with 250-micron particles. The present study indicates that a highly increased surface roughness compared to a moderately increased one is a short-term disadvantage f

Size-Dependent Neurotoxicity of Aluminum Oxide Particles: a Comparison Between Nano- and Micrometer Size on the Basis of Mitochondrial Oxidative Damage.

Aluminum nanoparticles (AlNPs) are among the most abundantly produced nanosized particles in the market. There is limited information about the potential harmful effects of aluminum oxide due to its particle size on human health. Considering the toxic effects of Al on brain as its target tissue, in this study, the toxicity of nanoparticles, microparticles, and ionic forms of Al on rat brain and isolated mitochondria was evaluated. Sixty male Wistar rats were divided into ten groups (six rats each), in which group I was the control, and the other groups were administered different doses of Al n
