Amanita pseudoporphyria induced hepatotoxicity: a cluster of poisoning with a pregnant woman.

Amanita pseudoporphyria (local name: ) typically causes nephrotoxic injury, while severe hepatotoxic damage is rarely reported. This study reports a familial poisoning cluster involving six individuals in Zhejiang, China, including one pregnant woman. Epidemiological investigation, morphological and molecular identification, and toxin detection were conducted. Two adults developed severe hepatotoxicity with coagulopathy. The pregnant patient exhibited mild liver injury and coagulopathy. Amanitin was detected in patient samples and the implicated mushroom soup. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed t…

Loss of Consciousness and Prolonged Convulsions Due to Amanita Pantherina Intoxication.

Loss of consciousness ranks among very common causes for emergency medical service actions and is common occurrence in the emergency department. Its differential diagnosis is very broad and includes many possible causes, not in the least an intoxication. The same applies to convulsive states. Clinical course of mushroom poisoning varies depending on the particular fungal species, with some of the species causing loss of consciousness. One typical representative of such species is panther cap (Amanita pantherina). This case report introduces panther cap poisoning, initially presenting in given …

The Effect of Amanita rubescens Pers Developmental Stages on Aroma Profile.

The dichloromethane extraction was applied to extracted volatile compounds of the six developmental stages of caps and stipes of an Amanita rubescens mushroom and the relative contents were measured with the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The number of identified compounds ranged between 53 and 52, respectively, with a high ratio of alkane volatiles. The significant differences between the aroma compounds were determined in caps to identify their stages of development. The fully mature stage caps were characterized by 4,6-dimethyl-dodecane (7.69 ± 1.15%), 2-hexyl-1-decanol (11.8 ± 1.61%…

[Review of present knowledge on the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of Amanita phalloides poisoning].

The mushroom poisoning of phalloid type is caused by amatoxins, mainly by alpha-amanitine. It is a cytotoxin which acts through an indirect mechanism. It binds irreversibly the nucleolar enzyme, RNA-polymerase II in cells with intensive proteosynthesis (enterocytes in the digestive tract, hepatocytes in the liver and epithelial cells of proximal renal tubules). A tight binding of the toxin with the enzyme blocks the transcription from DNA to m-RNA and thus makes the proteosynthesis impossible. This results in the cell necrosis. Pathophysiology of the phalloid type poisoning is rather complicat

Mercury and selenium in developing and mature fruiting bodies of Amanita muscaria.

Both mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) occur in many mushroom species, but the morphological distribution of these elements during different developmental stages of the fruiting bodies is not known. Although Amanita muscaria can be consumed after suitable processing, they are often ignored by mushroom foragers, leaving an abundance for investigative study. Multiple specimens in each of six developmental stages (button to fully mature) were collected in excellent condition during a single morning from the same forested location and composited. With an average of 30 specimens per composite, and low…

Mushroom poisoning in infants and children: the Amanita pantherina/muscaria group.

The clinical features and management of nine cases of mushroom poisoning due to Amanita pantherina (eight cases) and Amanita muscaria (one case) admitted to a children's hospital are described. Most ingestions were in the toddler age group with males being more frequently involved. Symptoms occurred between 30-180 min with the onset of central nervous system depression, ataxia, waxing and waning obtundation, hallucinations, intermittent hysteria or hyperkinetic behavior. Vomiting was rare. Seizures or myoclonic twitching occurred in 4/9 patients, but was controlled with standard anticonvulsant…

Amanita Muscaria Mushrooms: An Online Retail Assessment of Branded Retailers, 2025.

OBJECTIVE: Amanita muscaria mushrooms, known for their hallucinogenic effects, have grown in popularity and availability. However, use can cause delirium, coma, and death. Moreover, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has stated that Amanita muscaria, its extracts, and certain constituents (muscimol, ibotenic acid, and muscarine) are unapproved additives that do not meet the Generally Recognized as Safe standard, meaning that edible products containing them are adulterated under federal law (illegal to market and sell) and are subject to enforcement. METHODS: In April 2025, we examined …

[Probable amanita phalloides poisoning with pseudo-obstructive, paralytic ileus (Ogilvie's syndrome)].

A man of 52 years was admitted to Warsaw Poison Control Centre because of the suspicion of amanita phalloides poisoning. At admission (on third day of mushrooms ingestion) the patient still suffered from gastroenterocolic symptoms, especially from epigastric pain, nausea and vehement but slowly withdrawing diarrhea. On the next 2 days of hospitalization the typical symptoms of liver damage developed (jaundice, elevated aminotransferases AST and ALT, decrease of Quick index); prolonged epigastric pain was radiating to the right lower quadrant and with local tenderness peritonismus. These clinic…

Influence of Preparation Methods on the Concentrations of Lead and Cadmium in Amanita muscaria Products.

In recent years, the consumption of Amanita muscaria has gained popularity as a perceived natural alternative to psychoactive substances, often promoted online for its supposed therapeutic properties. However, the safety of such preparations remains largely unverified, particularly with regard to toxic element content. The present study focused on evaluating how different preparation methods affect the concentrations of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in the most commonly consumed Amanita muscaria products. A total of 50 mushroom caps were collected in October 2024 from the Stąporków Forest Distric…

[A rare case of acute renal failure related to amanita proxima ingestion].

OBJECTIVE: The first cases of acute renal tubulopathy related to Amanita proxima poisoning were described in 1994; the mushroom contains a toxin responsible for the allenic-norleucine syndrome, characterised by a kidney damage that occur earlier than in Cortinarius orellanus poisoning and generally improve with complete resolution within ten days. CASE REPORT: A 45 years old woman was admitted to the hospital because of nausea, vomiting, and heartburn started the day before. Symptoms occurred eight hours after eating a single big wild mushroom; three friends who had the same meal were all asy…

[Occurrence of severe cardiac alterations in Amanita proxima poisoning: two original observations].

Amanita proxima is one species of white mushroom which can induce poisonings called in France "proximien" syndrome. The clinical feature of "proximien" syndrome is mainly characterized by early digestive troubles, mild hepatic cytolysis and late renal impairment. A cardiac insult has never been reported in such a circumstance. The authors describe herein two cases of white mushroom poisoning occurred in the Mediterranean French coast with a typical clinical feature of "proximien" syndrome plus secondary development of severe cardiac alterations. The outcome was good for the two patients thanks…
