Background/Objectives: Currently, infections caused by fungi of the Candida genus remain a significant global health concern. The rising incidence of mycoses, coupled with the rapid emergence of fungal resistance, highlights the urgent need to search for new antifungal agents. Here, we obtained the recombinant hevein-like peptide from Amaranthus caudatus with two amino acid substitutions (F18W in the chitin-binding motif and M13A preventing the peptide from cleavage with cyanogen bromide during its biotechnological production). Methods: Antifungal potential of the modified hevein-like peptide,

Climate change results in continuous warming of the planet, threatening sustainable crop production around the world. Amaranth is an abiotic stress-tolerant, climate-resilient, C4 leafy orphan vegetable that has grown rapidly with great divergence and potential usage. The C4 photosynthesis allows amaranth to be grown as a sustainable future food crop across the world. Most amaranth species grow as weeds in many parts of the world, however, a few amaranth species can be also found in cultivated form. Weed species can be used as a folk medicine to relieve pain or reduce fever thanks to their ant

Perfluorotetradecanoic acid (PA) is a long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acid belonging to the group of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), whose exceptional chemical stability promotes their persistence and accumulation in the environment. Despite the growing interest in PFASs, knowledge of the impact of PA on soil fungal communities and crop plants remains limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of PA and the biostimulants Shigeki and Aminoprim on the structure, diversity, and functional potential of the soil mycobiome, as well as on the growth and development of Amar

Background: A contributing factor to male pattern hair loss (MPHL) is a compromised microcirculation and increased vasoconstriction in the scalp. Since endothelial nitric oxide (NO) was found to act as a vasodilator, our study looked at the efficacy of an amaranthus hair cream in delivering absorbable nitrates to the scalp that would convert to NO resulting in vasodilation and also deliver the nutrients to the scalp. Methods: This was a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled parallel arm study of 50 males of 25-45 years. The study included clinically diagnosed MPHL having Norwood class

An outbreak of poisoning associated with glyphosate-resistant Amaranthus hybridus affected three cows and twenty-five calves in Tacuarembó, Uruguay. The disease occurred from summer to autumn, coinciding with plant fruiting. Affected calves showed nasal discharge, preputial edema, weakness, recumbency, and gross lesions compatible with renal failure. Histological and ultrastructural analyses demonstrated acute tubular necrosis in proximal convoluted tubules and the descending limb of loops of Henle, supporting a direct toxic effect of Amaranthus-derived compounds in affected calves.

Amaranths (Amaranthus L.) are multi-use crop species renowned for their nutritional quality and their tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Since the soil salinity of croplands is a growing problem worldwide, we tested the salinity tolerance of six grain and two leaf cultivars of Amaranthus cruentus L. The plants were grown for 53 days under hydroponic conditions at 0, 50 and 100 mM NaCl. We investigated the growth rate, photosynthetic activity, mineral content, pigments and biochemical compounds involved in oxidative stress. Although 100 mM NaCl always decreased biomass production, we hig
