Ameloblastoma is an odontogenic neoplasm of enamel organ type tissue which does not undergo transformation to the point of enamel formation. We present the second case in the English literature of maxillary ameloblastoma that presented with nasal obstruction and rhinorrhoea, and the first to be excised using a combined maxillotomy and endoscopic ethmoidectomy. The patient had no previous dental history. The unusual presenting symptoms, as well as the highly destructive nature of these lesions when arising in the maxilla, make them worthy of consideration in the differential diagnosis of nasal …

Unicystic ameloblastoma is a cystic variant of ameloblastoma that may clinically and radiographically mimic odontogenic cysts and, in some cases, conventional ameloblastoma. The mural subtype is characterized by ameloblastomatous epithelial infiltration of the fibrous cyst wall and may demonstrate more aggressive biological behavior than other unicystic variants. This report describes a mural unicystic ameloblastoma in a 62-year-old male presenting with a long-standing painless swelling of the left mandible. Cone-beam computed tomography demonstrated a well-defined radiolucent lesion measuring…

The term "adenoid ameloblastoma" (AA) was formally introduced as an aggressive subtype of conventional ameloblastoma, and the name remains today despite controversies surrounding its nomenclature. As additional cases accumulated, the 2022 WHO Classification of odontogenic tumors classified AA as a distinct entity, and not a subtype of ameloblastoma. Although AA shares microscopic features with other odontogenic tumors, including adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT), dentinogenic ghost cell tumor (DGCT), and odontogenic carcinoma with dentinoid (OCD), recent genetic investigations have shed ligh…

Ameloblastoma is one of the most prevalent odontogenic tumors of epithelial origin, with several histological variations. However, among these variants, 'hybrid ameloblastoma' is infrequent and anomalous. The current case study demonstrates the existence of hybrid ameloblastoma in a 27-year-old female patient, which included desmoplastic, follicular, and acanthomatous patterns. The right side of the mandible was affected by tumor growth, with extensive bone involvement and neural invasion, resulting in a loss of sensation on that side. Although the tumor grows at a gradual pace, its enigmatic …

AIM: To determine how many ameloblastomas were misdiagnosed as dentigerous cysts (DCs) by correlating the radiological and histopathological features of a series of both entities.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Histopathology reports and radiological imaging of 135 DCs and 43 ameloblastomas were reviewed. Any clinical or radiological feature that suggested that the diagnosis of DC was wrong-for example, absence of an unerupted tooth-prompted review of the original histology. A total of 34 cases coded as DC at diagnosis were excluded; in the remaining 101 patients, the clinicoradiological and histopatho…

BACKGROUND: Plexiform ameloblastoma is a rare and benign odontogenic tumor which may reach grotesque proportions affecting over a region of lower molars. The correct diagnosis is essential to reduce this risk of local recurrences and obtain an effective treatment.
CASE REPORT: A 10-year-old female patient, Caucasian, presented a complaint of painless facial asymmetry. The clinical and imaginological examinations showed an increase in volume in the left mandibular body related to radiolucent unilocular injury near the apex of the first molar, expansion of the vestibular cortical bone, and toot…

Ameloblastomas (ABs) are rare odontogenic benign tumors. Although studies of the molecular pathogenesis have revealed the presence of mutations and altered gene expression, the etiology is unresolved. Viruses cause 10%-15 % of cancers, but their potential role within benign tumors is less studied. This study focuses on the potential presence of herpes-, parvo-, and polyomaviruses in ABs. Thirty DNA viruses comprising herpes-, parvo-, and polyomaviruses were analyzed by qPCR and Luminex-based methods in 11 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded AB samples. In repeated analyses, the ABs harbored none …

INTRODUCTION: Ameloblastoma is a benign odontogenic tumor which can be locally aggressive and invasive. Metastases are rare but possible and must be considered as a malignant form of the tumor.
OBSERVATION: A 50-year-old woman presented a jugal metastasis of a mandibular ameloblastom which had been treated several times 28 years earlier. Six months after resection of the metastasis, the patient developed multiple cervical node metastases which were removed by radical curettage. Five months later, new metastases developed on the scalp and three months later a voluminous metastasis involving th…

Ameloblastoma is an uncommon disease in the urological field. The resulting tumors or cysts are of odontogenic epithelial origin, are usually benign in nature and rarely metastasize to distant organs. We describe a case of metastatic ameloblastic carcinoma in both kidneys of a 38-year-old Japanese man, who had a history of malignant ameloblastoma and was referred to us for evaluation because of gross hematuria and left flank pain. Computed tomography showed irregular cystic masses in both kidneys. After we confirmed that the primary lesion and the lung metastatic lesion had not recurred, we tr…

The radiographs of fifteen Malaysian patients with presenting ameloblastoma aged between 20-55 years (average 35 years) were studied for any peculiar local features. The most common features were cortical plate expansion (80%), corticated scalloped margin (67%), multiloculation (87%), and resorption of tooth roots (47%). The latter two features are constantly found in advanced tumour stage. As pain was not a frequent complaint, many Malaysian patients seek treatment only at a very late stage after the tumours have reached large dimensions. Although ameloblastomas may be diagnosed often through…

We report a case of mucormycotic infection complicating a clinically silent ameloblastoma in an aged diabetic woman. Diagnosis was made by culture and biopsy of the affected tissue, where foreign-body granulomas were seen, an unusual inflammatory response for mucormycosis. A good outcome was achieved on the basis of radical surgery and amphotericin B infusion.

OBJECTIVE: Ameloblastoma is a benign, locally aggressive neoplasm of the jaws. Accurate diagnosis is important for providing timely treatment and reducing the risk of recurrence and local destruction. The criteria for diagnosing ameloblastoma are well-defined, however, rare cases have been observed with a multicystic/unicystic plexiform pattern that lacks pathognomonic histologic features, causing difficulties in differentiating them from less aggressive jaw lesions. Our main objective was to review these plexiform ameloblastomas that could prove challenging for pathologists on incisional biop…

Ameloblastomas are true benign tumors of odontogenic epithelial origin mostly seen in the mandible. After odontoma, it is the second most commonly seen odontogenic neoplasm. Ameloblastomas comprise several clinical, radiological, and histological varieties, making them the most significant odontogenic neoplasm. Unicystic ameloblastomas (UAs) refer to those cystic lesions that show clinical, radiographic, or gross features of jaw cysts but on histologic examination, they show a typical ameloblastomatous epithelium lining the cysts' cavities, with or without luminal and/or mural tumor proliferat…

Ameloblastoma (AM) is a slow growing and aggressive benign tumor with an odontogenic epithelial origin arising from the mandible or maxilla. The odontogenic neoplasm invades local tissues asymptomatically and accounts for 1% of oral tumors and over 10% of odontogenic tumors. A 64-year-old man with a history of allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS) undergoing a revision image-guided endoscopic sinus surgery was found to have a fibrous mass suspicious of malignancy projecting inferolaterally and attached to the floor of the left maxillary sinus. Diagnostic biopsies were taken, and additional sur…

OBJECTIVES: To describe the radiographic features of odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) and ameloblastomas and to compare the radiographic findings between these 2 lesions.
METHODS: Radiographs of OKCs and ameloblastomas were retrospectively reviewed. Location, border, shape, association with impacted tooth, tooth displacement, root resorption, and bone expansion were evaluated. Chi-squared or Fisher's exact tests were used for statistical analysis. A p value < 0.05 was considered to indicate statistical significance.
RESULTS: One hundred OKCs and 101 ameloblastomas were reviewed. The ratios of …

BACKGROUND: Ameloblastoma is a benign epithelial odontogenic tumor. It is often aggressive and destructive, with the capacity to attain great size, erode bone and invade adjacent structures. Unicystic ameloblastoma is a rare odontogenic lesion, with clinical, radiographic and gross features of jaw cysts. The lesion histologically shows typical ameloblastomatous epithelium lining part of the cyst cavity with or without and/or mural tumor growth. Unicystic ameloblastoma usually presents in posterior mandibular ramus region, while it is rare and atypical in posterior maxillary region. .

Odontogenic tumors constitute a group of heterogeneous lesions of benign and malignant neoplasms with variable aggressiveness. Ameloblastomas are a group of benign but locally invasive neoplasms that occur in the jaws and are derived from epithelial elements of the tooth-forming apparatus. We previously described orosomucoid-1 protein expression in odontogenic myxomas. However, whether orosomucoid-1 is expressed in other odontogenic tumors remains unknown. Since orosomucoid-1 belongs to a group of acute-phase proteins and has many functions in health and disease, we identified and analyzed oro…

A clinicopathological study of 5 cases of unusual ameloblastoma was performed. Three cases were characterized by marked stromal desmoplasia. The lesions occurred in the tooth-bearing areas of the anterior or premolar regions of the jaw. They were relatively small and showed a honeycomb appearance radiographically. Histologically, the islands of tumour cells were small and discrete in the widely extended desmoplastic stroma. They lacked obvious ameloblastic polarity in many parts. The other 2 cases were hybrid lesions of desmoplastic and conventional types. The former appeared in the alveolar p…
