Ameloblastic carcinoma of the mandible: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ameloblastic carcinoma is a malignant form of ameloblastoma and a very rare odontogenic tumor. We report a case of ameloblastic carcinoma that occurred after removal of a right-sided mandibular dental implant. CASE PRESENTATION: A 72-year-old female patient visited her family dentist with a complaint of pain around a lower right implant placed 37 years previously. Although the dental implant was removed with the diagnosis of peri-implantitis, the patient experienced dullness of sensation in the lower lip and was followed up by her dentist, but after no improvement. She was referre

Pediatric Ameloblastic Fibroma: A Case Report.

AIM: To highlight the potential difficulties in diagnosing neoplastic lesion of the head and neck in children within autism spectrum. BACKGROUND: Ameloblastic fibromas are a variation of odontogenic tumors that are located in the posterior mandible in 70% of cases. The tumors may be either unilocular or multilocular when observed radiographically. Ameloblastic fibromas tend to have well-defined, scalloped margins radiographically but may also be corticated. In close to 75% of all cases, an impacted tooth is associated with the lesion. Although not confined to patients who are in their first o

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma masquerading as odontoma.

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) is a rare, benign epithelial mixed odontogenic tumor. It occurs as an intraosseous lesion, generally asymptomatic and more prevalent in children and adolescent. AFO is found on radiographic evaluation of patients with unerupted or impacted teeth in many cases. Histological examination reveals a fibrous soft tissue, islands of odontogenic epithelium and a disordered mixture of dental tissues. The treatment modality in most cases involves conservative surgery with enucleation. We present a case of 13-year-old boy with a missing right central incisor, mimicking-l

An unusual size of ameloblastic fibro-odontoma.

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) is a quite rare, mixed odontogenic tumour generally seen in the early stages of life. Frequent signs of the tumour are asymptomatic swelling, delayed tooth eruption and mixed radiological appearance within well-defined borders. Management of the lesion includes enucleation of the tumour and long-term follow-up in order to avoid recurrence. A 9-year-old girl was referred to our clinic with swelling in her right cheek. After clinical and radiographic examination, a large lobular radiopaque mass with a radiolucent border covering the complete right maxillary sinu

[Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma of the maxillary sinus].

INTRODUCTION: Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma, ameloblastic fibroma, and odontoma are rare malformations, which are classified as odontologic tumors. They usually progress in an asymptomatic way, and making the histological distinction between these variants is very difficult. OBSERVATION: We report the case of a 14-year-old girl presenting with an ameloblastic fibro-odontoma of the maxillary sinus. The clinical signs were nasal obstruction and jugular tumefaction. Surgical excision was performed through a paralateronasal approach. The diagnosis of fibro-odontoma was confirmed by the histopatholo

Evidence for Bicarbonate Secretion by Ameloblasts in a Novel Cellular Model.

Formation and growth of hydroxyapatite crystals during amelogenesis generate a large number of protons that must be neutralized, presumably by HCO3 (-)ions transported from ameloblasts into the developing enamel matrix. Ameloblasts express a number of transporters and channels known to be involved in HCO3 (-)transport in other epithelia. However, to date, there is no functional evidence for HCO3 (-)transport in these cells. To address questions related to HCO3 (-)export from ameloblasts, we have developed a polarized 2-dimensional culture system for HAT-7 cells, a rat cell line of ameloblast o

Expression and localization of ferritin mRNA in ameloblasts of rat incisor.

At the maturation stage, the ameloblasts of the rat incisor incorporate iron, supplied through the bloodstream, and deposit it into the surface layer of the enamel. In this unique iron transport system, ferritin functions as a transient iron reservoir in the cells. Here the expression of ferritin mRNA and its localization in the rat enamel organ was examined. Among various tissues, the enamel organ showed the highest expression for both ferritin H- and L-chain mRNA, as quantified by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. In situ hybridization using digoxigenin-labelled cRNA probes fo

Sulfated glycoconjugates in rat incisor secretory ameloblasts and developing enamel matrix.

We investigated the ultrastructural distribution and histochemical properties of sulfated glycoconjugates, which could be preserved by glutaraldehyde fixation, in secretory ameloblasts and developing enamel matrix, by use of the high iron diamine thiocarbohydrazide silver proteinate (HID-TCH-SP) staining and enzymatic digestion methods. Large type HID-TCH-SP stain deposits, approximately 10 nm in diameter, were detected on the interdigitating cell membrane of Tomes' process, inside some secretory granules, on the lateral cell membrane of stratum intermedium, in the basement membranes associate

IgE in postsecretory ameloblasts suggesting a hypersensitivity reaction at tooth eruption.

The clinical symptoms associated with the eruption of primary teeth resemble a mild hypersensitivity reaction. Light microscopic examination showed that IgE accumulated in postsecretory ameloblasts. The formation of IgE was elicited by enamel matrix proteins, which are chemotactic for mast cells.

Energy metabolic shift contributes to the phenotype modulation of maturation stage ameloblasts.

Maturation stage ameloblasts (M-ABs) are responsible for terminal enamel mineralization in teeth and undergo characteristic cyclic changes in both morphology and function between ruffle-ended ameloblasts (RA) and smooth-ended ameloblasts (SA). Energy metabolism has recently emerged as a potential regulator of cell differentiation and fate decisions; however, its implication in M-ABs remains unclear. To elucidate the relationship between M-ABs and energy metabolism, we examined the expression pattern of energy metabolic enzymes in M-ABs of mouse incisors. Further, using the HAT7 cell line with

NBCe1 in mouse and human ameloblasts may be indirectly regulated by fluoride.

Enamel biomineralization results in a release of protons into the enamel matrix, causing an acidification of the local microenvironment. This acidification, which may be enhanced by more rapid mineral deposition in the presence of fluoride, must be neutralized by the overlying ameloblasts. The electrogenic sodium bicarbonate co-transporter NBCe1 has been localized in mouse ameloblasts, and has been proposed to have a role in matrix pH regulation. In this study, transcript analysis by PCR showed NBCe1-A present in human ameloblasts, whereas mouse ameloblasts expressed NBCe1-B. In situ hybridiza

Maxillary Cystic Ameloblastic Fibroma in a Dalmatian Mix.

A 6-month-old intact male Dalmatian mix puppy was presented for the evaluation of left maxillary swelling due to a suspected cyst and an unerupted left maxillary canine tooth. Removal of the unerupted left maxillary canine tooth (204) and enucleation of the cyst was performed, followed by histological analysis, which identified the maxillary swelling to be a cystic ameloblastic fibroma. Ameloblastic fibromas are rare in companion animals, and to the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first cystic variant reported in dogs. The clinical, radiographic, cone beam computed tomography, and

Ameloblastic Fibro-odontoma with a Predominant Radiopaque Component.

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) is a rare odontogenic tumor. Initially believed to be a lesion similar to ameloblastic fibroma (AF), it is now considered as a separate entity in the WHO odontogenic tumor classification. Commonly associated with a painless swelling and an associated absence of eruption of a tooth, AFO presents as a mixed radiopaque and radiolucent lesion in the younger population with a predilection for the posterior region. Histologically, it shows the characteristics of an immature complex odontoma with irregularly arranged enamel, dentinoid, cementoid-like structures, and

Ameloblastic fibro-odontosarcoma of the mandible in a pediatric patient.

INTRODUCTION: Ameloblastic fibro-odontosarcoma is an extremely rare subtype of odontogenic sarcoma, with only 13 cases reported in the literature. CASE REPORT: A 4-year-old male presented with a painless mandibular swelling, which appeared 4months previously. Cone beam computed tomography revealed an extensive, ill-circumscribed, multilocular radiolucency of the right mandible extending from the first deciduous molar to the ramus with slightly dense opacities. Histological examination of the incisional biopsy specimen revealed a biphasic tumor with sarcomatous mesenchyme and benign ameloblast

Expression of the transcription factor PITX2 in ameloblastic carcinoma.

Ameloblastic carcinoma is a rare odontogenic tumour that combines the histological features of ameloblastoma with cytological atypia. Until 2005, the incidence of ameloblastic carcinoma was unknown, and since then, fewer than 60 cases have been reported. These tumours may originate from pre-existing tumours or cysts, or they arise de novo from the activation or transformation of embryological cells. PITX2 is a transcription factor that is a product and regulator of the WNT cell signalling pathway, which has been involved in development of several tumours. To analyse whether PITX2 could be invo

A Large Ameloblastic Fibro-odontoma of the Maxillary Sinus.

INTRODUCTION: Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma is a rare, benign, asymptomatic tumor. The term ameloblastic fibro-odontoma was first used by Hooker in 1967 as a separate lesion from ameloblastic odontoma. CASE REPORT: This case report describes an eleven years old female with large ameloblastic fibro-odontoma in the right maxillary sinus. CONCLUSION: There is a low potential for recurrence after complete Enucleation of ameloblastic fibro-odontoma, but due to the risk of ameloblastic sarcoma after recurrence, the surgery should be perfect along with a careful follow up.
