Weekend/holiday versus weekday hospital discharge and guideline adherence (from the American Heart Association's Get with the Guidelines--Coronary Artery Disease database).

Most hospitals have reduced medical staff on weekends. Furthermore, a recent study on acute myocardial infarction suggested that weekend admissions were associated with higher mortality compared with weekday admissions. We sought to determine if compliance with guideline recommendations for acute coronary syndrome performance measures would be worse on weekends/holidays compared with weekdays. We utilized the American Heart Association's Get with the Guidelines (GWTG)--Coronary Artery Disease database. This study included 154,910 patients admitted to 515 various hospitals from January 14, 2000

Racial and Ethnic Differences in Presentation and Outcomes for Patients Hospitalized With COVID-19: Findings From the American Heart Association's COVID-19 Cardiovascular Disease Registry.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has exposed longstanding racial and ethnic inequities in health risks and outcomes in the United States. We aimed to identify racial and ethnic differences in presentation and outcomes for patients hospitalized with COVID-19. METHODS: The American Heart Association COVID-19 Cardiovascular Disease Registry is a retrospective observational registry capturing consecutive patients hospitalized with COVID-19. We present data on the first 7868 patients by race/ethnicity treated at 88 hospitals across the United States between January 17,

Incidence Rates of COVID-19-Associated Hospitalization and Risk Factors for Severe Disease Among American Indian and Alaska Native Persons in the Southwest USA and Alaska.

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 causes significant morbidity in the USA, particularly among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) persons. Estimates of COVID-19 burden among AI/AN communities are needed to identify health outcome disparities and inform prevention strategies, but under-ascertainment of AI/AN status in national data may result in underestimation of COVID-19 disease burden. METHODS: Surveillance for acute respiratory illness was conducted among AI/AN persons at eight healthcare facilities in Arizona and Alaska to identify COVID-19-associated hospitalizations and outpatient visits. First documented rhythm and clinical outcome in children who undergo extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation for in-hospital cardiac arrest: A report from the american heart association get with the guidelines® - resuscitation registry (GWTG-R).

INTRODUCTION: Outcomes of conventional cardiopulmonary resuscitation are improved when the initial rhythm is shockable (ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia). In children, the first documented rhythm is typically asystole or pulseless electrical activity. We evaluate the role the initial rhythm plays in outcomes for children undergoing extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) for in-hospital cardiac arrest. METHODS: Consecutive patients < 18 years with in-hospital ECPR events ≥ 10 minutes reported to the American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines® -

Social Vulnerability and Long-Term Cardiovascular Outcomes After COVID-19 Hospitalization: An Analysis of the American Heart Association COVID-19 Registry Linked With Medicare Claims Data.

BACKGROUND: Patients hospitalized with COVID-19 from socioeconomically vulnerable communities are at risk for in-hospital cardiovascular events. However, the association of socioeconomic vulnerability and outcomes after hospitalization is uncertain. METHODS AND RESULTS: American Heart Association COVID-19 Cardiovascular Disease Registry hospitalizations between March 1, 2020, and June 30, 2022, linked with Medicare fee-for-service claims, were analyzed. We used Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Social Vulnerability Index to ascertain county-level and Medicare-Medicaid dual eligibil

Interim Effectiveness Estimates of 2024 Southern Hemisphere Influenza Vaccines in Preventing Influenza-Associated Hospitalization - REVELAC-i Network, Five South American Countries, March-July 2024.

To reduce influenza-associated morbidity and mortality, countries in South America recommend annual influenza vaccination for persons at high risk for severe influenza illness, including young children, persons with preexisting health conditions, and older adults. Interim estimates of influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE) from Southern Hemisphere countries can provide early information about the protective effects of vaccination and help guide Northern Hemisphere countries in advance of their season. Using data from a multicountry network, investigators estimated interim VE against influenza-as

Longitudinal Trends in Cardiovascular Risk Factor Profiles and Complications Among Patients Hospitalized for COVID-19 Infection: Results From the American Heart Association COVID-19 Cardiovascular Disease Registry.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has evolved through multiple phases characterized by new viral variants, vaccine development, and changes in therapies. It is unknown whether rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor profiles and complications have changed over time. METHODS: We analyzed the American Heart Association COVID-19 CVD registry, a national multicenter registry of hospitalized adults with active COVID-19 infection. The time period from April 2020 to December 2021 was divided into 3-month epochs, with March 2020 analyzed separately as a potential outlier. Participating cent

Relation of prior statin and anti-hypertensive use to severity of disease among patients hospitalized with COVID-19: Findings from the American Heart Association's COVID-19 Cardiovascular Disease Registry.

BACKGROUND: Statins have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects that may reduce the severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), in which organ dysfunction is mediated by severe inflammation. Large studies with diverse populations evaluating statin use and outcomes in COVID-19 are lacking. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used data from 10,541 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 through September 2020 at 104 US hospitals enrolled in the American Heart Association's COVID-19 Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Registry to evaluate the associations between statin use and outcomes. Impact of the 2014 American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation and of the resulting limited financial coverage by the Italian Medicines Agency for palivizumab prophylaxis on the RSV-associated hospitalizations in preterm infants during the 2016-2017 epidemic season: a systematic review of seven Italian reports.

BACKGROUND: The only pharmacologic prophylaxis against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in preterm infants is the humanized monoclonal antibody palivizumab. After the 2014 modification of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendations, the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) limited the financial coverage for palivizumab prescriptions to otherwise healthy preterm infants with < 29 weeks of gestational age (wGA) aged < 12 months at the beginning of the 2016-2017 RSV season. However, due to the effect on disease severity and hospitalizations following this limitation, shown by s
