Amniotic Band Syndrome: A Review of 2 Cases.

Amniotic band syndrome is a rare congenital disorder caused by entrapment of fetal parts (usually a limb or digits) in fibrous amniotic bands while in utero that presents with complex multisystem anomalies. The authors report 2 children with amniotic band syndrome who presented to the ophthalmic unit of the authors' pediatric hospital. One of them presented with telecanthus, syndactyly, amputated toes, and unilateral epiphora diagnosed as congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction. She was managed conservatively with lacrimal sac massage and provided with refractive correction while she simultan…

Dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa associated with amniotic band syndrome.

Amniotic band syndrome (ABS) is a term used to describe congenital anomalies that result from the entrapment of a fetus in fibrous bands. We describe two male infants born with features of dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB) and ABS. These cases add to the few previous reports of simultaneous DEB and ABS. Abnormal type VII collagen in anchoring structures of the amniotic epithelium is a proposed mechanism for loose amniotic bands that entangle the fetus, with an abnormality in the gene that encodes for type VII collagen.

Spinal cord tethering associated with amniotic band syndrome.

Amniotic band syndrome (ABS) comprises fetal morphological abnormalities that may be associated with fibrous amniotic bands that damage developing fetal parts resulting in cutaneous scars, erosions and ulcerations, digital constricting bands, craniofacial and visceral anomalies. Multiple asymmetric encephaloceles and anencephaly are neural-tube-like defects previously reported with ABS. This is the first report of spinal dysraphism with dorsal spinal cord tethering associated with ABS. We examine the pathogenetic theories of ABS in light of this report.

[Ultrasonographic diagnosis of amniotic band syndrome in pregnancy].

The amniotic band syndrome comprises a heterogenous group of congenital deformities which originate from rupture of the amnion during the early stages of fetal development. The diagnosis of the syndrome in the newborn is difficult because of the wide spectrum of anomalies, and its resemblance to other genetic or developmental deformities. The prenatal diagnosis of the syndrome is possible when there is ultrasonographic demonstration of multiple, nonembryological anomalies, with or without visualization of amniotic bands floating in the amniotic fluid. We recently diagnosed prenatally 3 fetuses…

Severe amniotic band syndrome occurring with unrelated syndactyly.

A patient with severe amniotic band syndrome and true proximal syndactyly of the hand and foot is presented. The occurrence of these two seemingly unrelated anomalies may be pathologically linked with amniotic band syndrome in some as yet unexplained way or less likely may occur with amniotic band syndrome coincidentally.

Amniotic band syndrome and conditions simulating disruption malformations.

Twelve cases of fetal malformation due to the amniotic band syndrome (ABS) or disruption sequence were reviewed; these included craniofacial malformations, limb defects and gastroschisis. No one case was similar to another. The initial diagnosis was correct in 5 of the 12 cases, mainly those involving limb defects. All 4 cases in which major malformations were present were initially diagnosed incorrectly. The importance of correct diagnosis mainly concerns counselling regarding the future risk of recurrence--the probability of familial recurrence of ABS is very low, whereas the risk of recurre…

Uterine contractility as a cause of amniotic band syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine whether puncturing the uterine wall and the amnion causes uterine contractions that result in fetal abnormalities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An experimental study was performed using four groups of three female rabbits. Group A received a puncture of the amniotic membranes of one of the uteri on day 15 of gestation followed by group B on day 16, group C on day 17, and group D on day 18. The duration and force of contractions and fetal abnormalities were determined. RESULTS: There were immediate contractions after the puncture, which lasted

Oral rehabilitation of a child with amniotic band syndrome.

Amniotic band syndrome (ABS) encompasses a constellation of birth defects, which occurs secondary to disruption of normal intrauterine development. Deformities of the craniofacial complex and extremities are commonly noted findings. In this case, extensive dental caries and supernumerary teeth were identified in a 3 year-old Asian boy with amniotic band syndrome who presented with bilateral cleft lip and palate and distal extremity constrictions, amputations and syndactyly. Oral rehabilitation for this child including preventive and restorative procedures was performed under general anesthesia…

The ophthalmic manifestations and treatment of the amniotic band syndrome.

The amniotic band syndrome is an unusual cause of craniofacial deformities. The syndrome, which is initiated by rupture of the amnion, results in an unpredictable combination of compression deformities of the fetus, construction or amputation defects of the extremities, and craniofacial clefting deformities. The type and extent of ophthalmic abnormalities are dependent on the band location and timing. They include a combination of bony orbital clefts or hypertelorism; lid anomalies such as colobomas, ptosis, and ectropion; lacrimal outflow obstruction; and globe involvement. We review the clin…

Amniotic band syndrome with double encephalocele: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Amniotic band syndrome (ABS) is a rare condition of controversial etiology that is associated with varying degrees of anomalies. This study reports a case of a newborn with ABS associated with double encephalocele in the frontal region. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 29-year-old primiparous woman with no history of prenatal infection or consanguineous marriage had a cesarean section at gestational week 38, giving birth to a newborn who was well but had limb anomalies (constriction rings, amputations, and syndactyly) and craniofacial anomalies, mainly double frontal encephalocele. The patient…

A 5-month-old girl with amniotic band syndrome.

A 5-month-old girl presented with bilateral upper and lower eyelid cicatricial ectropion with right eye exposure keratopathy and bilateral lateral canthal defects. Physical examination revealed a constriction band over the temporal area of the head and nasal bridge; she was diagnosed with congenital amniotic band syndrome (ABS). Upper and lower eyelid reconstruction procedures were performed along with lateral canthal reconstruction to salvage the remaining left eye. Congenital ABS is a rare disorder. Most cases of ocular ABS are associated with limb deformities due to constriction defects and…

[PELVIS/SACRAL syndrome with livedoid haemangioma and amniotic band].

BACKGROUND: PELVIS or SACRAL syndrome denotes the association of local haemangioma and malformation in the pelvic region. In this paper, we … opigmentation in the sacrolumbar region and a fibrous groove around the right arm characteristic of amniotic band syndrome. Sacrolumbar and pelvic MRI scans revealed deviation towards the left of the last three sacral vertebrae with no medullary anomalies. Retrograde cystography showed a recto-uretral fistula. Progression of the infant's condition was marked by the appe …

[Amniotic band syndrome: pathogenesis, prenatal diagnosis and neonatal management].

Amniotic band syndrome is a collection of fetal congenital malformations, affecting mainly the limbs, but also the craniofacial area and internal organs. Two mains pathogenic mechanisms are proposed: early amnion rupture (exogenous theory) leading to fibrous bands, which entrap the fetal body; the endogenous theory privileges vascular compromise, mesoblastic strings not being a causal agent. The outcome of the disease depends on the gravity of the malformation. Termination of the pregnancy is usually proposed at the time of the diagnostic of severe craniofacial and visceral abnormalities, wher…

Prenatal diagnosis of acrania associated with amniotic band syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The amniotic band syndrome is a collection of fetal malformations associated with fibrous bands that appear to entrap or entangle various fetal parts in utero and can affect any organ or system and cause a single or multiple anomalies. The anomaly, acrania, is characterized by partial or complete absence of the calvarium with abnormal brain tissue development. Literature reports association of amniotic band syndrome and acrania postnatally, but not diagnosed prenatally by ultrasound. CASE: A young woman, gravida 1, para 0, presented for an initial prenatal visit at 35 weeks' gesta…

Placental teratoma or acardius amorphus with amniotic band syndrome.

The differential diagnosis between placental teratoma and fetus acardius may be difficult. Both are rare conditions and show a variable degree of organisation. Important diagnostic features are the presence or absence of an umbilical cord and craniocaudal development. The presence of an umbilical cord and obvious craniocaudal development is highly indicative of fetus acardius. A fetus acardius is a malformed member of a monochorial twin. An acardius is probably caused by overpowering of the heart of the fetus acardius by that of the normal sibling or primary agenesis of the heart. Our case ill

Amniotic band disruption syndrome associated with elevated amniotic AFP and normal acetylcholinesterase gel test.

Ultrasonography in an 18 week pregnancy selected for detailed scanning because of a single elevated maternal serum AFP result suggested the presence of anencephaly. Amniocentesis at 19 weeks yielded a clear AF with an elevated AFP result (5.4 MOM) and no evidence of an acetylcholinesterase band of neural origin on PAG electrophoresis. At termination, the fetus had cephalo-amniotic fusion and multiple abnormalities including bilateral cleft lip and palate and digital amputations characteristic of the amniotic band syndrome. The cranial defect was completely sealed by attachment of the amniotic …
