The chytrid fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, causes chytridiomycosis and is a major contributor to global amphibian declines. Although amphibians have robust immune defenses, clearance of this pathogen is impaired. Because inhibition of host immunity is a common survival strategy of pathogenic fungi, we hypothesized that B. dendrobatidis evades clearance by inhibiting immune functions. We found that B. dendrobatidis cells and supernatants impaired lymphocyte proliferation and induced apoptosis; however, fungal recognition and phagocytosis by macrophages and neutrophils was not impaired.

Reptiles are growing in popularity as pets. The colonization of reptiles and amphibians by parasites and the resulting disease conditions are the most common problems seen in captive animals. This review focuses on pentastomiasis and sparganosis, important parasitic zoonoses of reptiles and amphibians, respectively, and free living-amoebae. Humans are suitable accidental hosts for some pentastomid species (particularly Armillifer and Porocephalus). In geographical areas with special ethnics, such as in West and Central Africa, and East Asia, 8-45% of the human population can be affected. Usually

Early studies in anuran amphibians defined the amygdala as a single unit that only later could be subdivided into medial and lateral parts with the achievement of sensitive immunohistochemical and tracing techniques. However, the terminology used was often misleading when comparing with "homologous" amygdaloid nuclei in amniotes. Recently, the basal telencephalon of anurans has been demonstrated to be more complex than previously thought, and distinct amygdaloid nuclei were proposed on the basis of immunohistochemistry. Moreover, developmental data are increasing that support this notion. In t

Because of the lack of information about effective analgesics in non-mammalian vertebrates, the potency of various non-opioid agents were tested in a model of analgesia by using Northern grass frogs (Rana pipiens). This alternative model has been used widely for investigating opioid analgesic action. Potential non-opioid analgesics tested included antipsychotic, benzodiazepine, barbiturate, antihistamine, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID), and partial opioid agents. Northern grass frogs were acclimated to lab conditions in individual cages. Drugs were administered systemically through th

This review discusses the effects of aluminum and other metals associated with acidification on amphibians. The majority of research has centered around aluminum although some information is available regarding copper, cadmium, iron, zinc and lead. The major habitat types in which amphibians live and breed are listed and the mechanisms by which these habitats may become acidified and contaminated with metals are discussed. Three lines of investigation into acid and metal toxicity are reviewed in detail: (1) field surveys of water chemistry, (2) laboratory toxicity tests, (3) field studies whic

The genus Multicaecum Baylis 1923, sensu Hartwich 1957, was found to be heterogeneous, comprising species which are released to two distinct genera, namely Multicaecum Bavlis, 1923 and Brevimulticaecum. The latter name is derived from the subgenus Brevinulticaecum Mozgovoy, in Skrjabin, Shikhobalova, and Mozgovoy, 1951 by raising it to generic rank and emending the definition. Multicaecum contains a single species, agile Wedl, 1861 occurring in Crocodylus spp. in Africa, India and Australia, and is characterized by smooth rounded lips, each with a dentigerous ridge comprising small sharp denti

A modified amphibian metamorphosis assay was performed in which Nieuwkoop and Faber (NF) stage 47 Xenopus laevis larvae were exposed to different concentrations of either perchlorate (ClO4 -) or nitrate (NO3 -) for 32 days. Larvae were exposed to 0.0 (control), 5, 25, 125, 625, and 3125 μg/L ClO4 -, or 0 (control), 23, 71, 217, 660, and 2000 mg/L NO3 -. The primary endpoints were survival, hind limb length (HLL), forelimb emergence and development, developmental stage (including time to NF stage 62 [MT62]), thyroid histopathology, wet weight, and snout-vent length (SVL). The severe greenhouse climate and seasonality of the early to mid-Late Triassic are thought to have limited terrestrial diversity at lower latitudes, but direct adaptations to these harsh conditions remain limited in vertebrates at the palaeoequator. Here, we present Ninumbeehan dookoodukah gen. et sp. nov., an early amphibian with specialized adaptations for seasonal estivation from the upper Jelm Formation of the Late Triassic of Wyoming, USA. Ninumbeehan are found in an association of vertebrate estivation burrows across a locally dense horizon, offering insights into the evolution and ecol

The Amphibian Conservation Action Plan (ACAP), published in 2007, is a formal document of international significance that proposed eleven relevant actions for global amphibian conservation. Action seven of the ACAP document addresses the use of amphibian captive programs as a conservation tool. Appendix material under this action explores the potential use of Genome Resource Banking (biobanking) as an urgently needed tool for these captive programs. ACAP proposed twelve objectives for Genome Resource Banking which exhibit little emphasis on reproduction as a vital underlying science for amphib

Many gene-encoded neurotoxins with various functions have been discovered in fish, reptiles, and mammals. A novel 60-residue neurotoxin peptide (anntoxin) that inhibited tetrodotoxin-sensitive (TTX-S) voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) was purified and characterized from the skin secretions of the tree frog Hyla annectans (Jerdon). This is the first gene-encoded neurotoxin found in amphibians. The IC50 of anntoxin for the TTX-S channel was about 3.4 microM. Anntoxin shares sequence homology with Kunitz-type toxins but contains only two of three highly conserved cysteine bridges, which are typ

Evidence shows that environmental compounds can interfere with the endocrine systems of wildlife and humans. The main sink of such substances, called endocrine disruptors (EDs), which are mainly of anthropogenic origin, is surface water; thus, aquatic vertebrates such as fishes and amphibians are most endangered. Despite numerous reports on EDs in fishes, information about EDs in amphibians is scarce, and this paucity of information is of particular concern in view of the worldwide decline of amphibians. EDs could contribute to changes of amphibian populations via adverse effects on reproducti

Despite numerous descriptive studies, the embryonic origin of vertebrate taste buds has never been experimentally determined. A number of different alternatives have been suggested for taste bud origins, including epibranchial placodes, the neural crest, and the local epithelium of the oropharyngeal cavity. The role of a series of epibranchial placodes and the cephalic neural crest, which together give rise to the cranial nerves innervating taste buds, was examined with regard to the development of oropharyngeal taste buds in an ambystomatid salamander, the axolotl. When pigmented placodal ect

The scale of amphibian and reptile translocations over the past 16 years necessitates a reassessment of current practices since the last major review in 2009. We conducted a literature review of translocations from 2007 to 2023 and identified 313 case studies encompassing conservation-, mitigation-, and research-related translocations. Most published efforts were conservation-driven, focusing primarily on reptiles in North America, Oceania, and Europe. We evaluated translocation success with both authors' self-assessments and a standardized success-stage framework (Stages 0-4), where Stage 4 r

In recent years, environmental DNA (eDNA) has received attention from biologists due to its sensitivity, convenience, labor and material efficiency, and lack of damage to organisms. The extensive application of eDNA has opened avenues for the monitoring and biodiversity assessment of amphibians, which are frequently small and difficult to observe in the field, in areas such as biodiversity survey assessment and detection of specific, rare and threatened, or alien invasive species. However, the accuracy of eDNA can be influenced by factors such as ambient temperature, pH, and false positives or

BACKGROUND: Rearrangement is an important topic in the research of amphibian mitochondrial genomes ("mitogenomes" hereafter), whose causes and mechanisms remain enigmatic. Globally examining mitogenome rearrangements and uncovering their characteristics can contribute to a better understanding of mitogenome evolution.
RESULTS: Here we systematically investigated mitogenome arrangements of 232 amphibians including four newly sequenced Dicroglossidae mitogenomes. The results showed that our new sequenced mitogenomes all possessed a trnM tandem duplication, which was not exclusive to Dicroglossi

Invasive species have major impacts on biodiversity and are one of the primary causes of amphibian decline and extinction. Unlike other top ant invaders that negatively affect larger fauna via chemical defensive compounds, the Argentine ant (Linepithema humile) does not have a functional sting. Nonetheless, it deploys defensive compounds against competitors and adversaries. We estimated levels of ant aggression toward 3 native terrestrial amphibians by challenging juveniles in field ant trails and in lab ant foraging arenas. We measured the composition and quantities of toxin in L. humile by a

Populations of amphibians have been declining worldwide since the late 1960s. Despite global concern, no studies have quantitatively assessed the major causes of this decline. In the present study, species sensitivity distributions (SSDs) were developed to analyze the sensitivity of anurans for ammonium, nitrate, heavy metals (cadmium, copper), pesticides (18 compounds), and acidification (pH) based on laboratory toxicity data. Ecological risk (ER) was calculated as the probability that a measured environmental concentration of a particular stressor in habitats where anurans were observed woul

Reptiles and amphibians are popular as pets. There are increased concerns among public health officials because of the zoonotic potential associated with these animals. Encounters with reptiles and amphibians are also on the rise in the laboratory setting and with wild animals; in both of these practices, there is also an increased likelihood for exposure to zoonotic pathogens. It is important that veterinarians remain current with the literature as it relates to emerging and reemerging zoonotic diseases attributed to reptiles and amphibians so that they can protect themselves, their staff, an

Many ectothermic vertebrates ingest very large meals at infrequent intervals. The digestive processes associated with these meals, often coupled with an extensive hypertrophy of the gastrointestinal organs, are energetically expensive and metabolic rate, therefore, increases substantially after feeding (specific dynamic action, SDA). Here, we review the cardio-respiratory consequences of SDA in amphibians and reptiles. For some snakes, the increased oxygen uptake during SDA is of similar magnitude to that of muscular exercise, and the two physiological states, therefore, exert similar and prof
