[Contribution to the study of Microphallidae travassos, 1920 (Trematoda). XLV. Description of Maritrema feliui n. sp., parasite of shrews (Mammals) in Spain].

The authors describe and illustrate the morphology of the adult stage of Maritrema feliui n. sp. (Trematoda Microphallidae) obtained from the intestine of the shrew Crocidura russula (Hermann, 1780), definitive host of the fluke present in the estuary of the river Llobregat (Catalonia, Spain). The larval stages are found in two hosts obtained from the area: 1) Mercuria confusa (Frauenfeld) [= Pseudamnicola similis (Draparnaud)] (Mollusca: Hydrobiidae), and 2) Gammarus aequicauda (Martynov) (Crustacea: Amphipoda). The adult stage is anatomically related to the Maritrema with a mean size of the

In situ observations reveal a link between association behaviour, camouflage and eye complexity in midwater amphipods.

In the largest habitat on earth-the deep open ocean-water depth is typically linked to adaptations for camouflage and vision. Recently, it was hypothesized that association behaviour is a primary evolutionary driver of the great eye diversity in a group of crustaceans, the hyperiid amphipods (suborder Hyperiidea). Here, we test that hypothesis by investigating the link between association behaviour (symbiotic or free swimming), depth, eye complexity and camouflage across a broad range of hyperiid diversity. We collated a unique dataset containing observations of 48 of the 80 hyperiid genera fr

Locomotor activity and physiological responses of parasite-infected Gammarus fossarum exposed to the herbicide metazachlor.

Herbicides are among the most commonly found contaminants in freshwater ecosystems. Standard tests are frequently employed to assess their ecotoxicological impacts, but sublethal endpoints in non-target species are often not considered. In addition, ecotoxicological investigations rarely take into account that many species from field populations are naturally infected with parasites. To overcome these gaps, our study aimed to investigate how environmentally relevant concentrations of the herbicide metazachlor affect the locomotor activity and selected physiological responses of Gammarus fossar

Behavioral and biochemical alterations induced by acute clothianidin and imidacloprid exposure in the killer shrimp, Dikerogammarus villosus.

Neonicotinoids are widely used insecticides around the world and are preserved permanently in soils and appear in surface waters posing an increased threat to ecosystems. In the present study, we exposed adult specimens of amphipod Dikerogammarus villosus to environmentally relevant and higher concentrations of two widely used agricultural neonicotinoids, clothianidin (CLO) and imidacloprid (IMI), for 2 days. The acute effects were investigated at the behavioral (immobility time and swimming activity) and biochemical (glutathione S-transferase [GST] and acetylcholine esterase [AchE] activity)

Whole sediment toxicity identification evaluation tools for pyrethroid insecticides: III. Temperature manipulation.

Since the toxicity of pyrethroid insecticides is known to increase at low temperatures, the use of temperature manipulation was explored as a whole-sediment toxicity identification evaluation (TIE) tool to help identify sediment samples in which pyrethroid insecticides are responsible for observed toxicity. The amphipod Hyalella azteca is commonly used for toxicity testing of sediments at a 23 degrees C test temperature. However, a temperature reduction to 18 degrees C doubled the toxicity of pyrethroids, and a further reduction to 13 degrees C tripled their toxicity. A similar response, thoug

Metacollinia emscheri n. sp., a novel sanguicolous apostome ciliate of freshwater amphipods (Gammarus spp.).

We describe a novel sanguicolous parasitic ciliate, Metacollinia emscheri n. sp., found in the freshwater amphipods Gammarus pulex and G. fossarum. This ciliate infected 8.05 % of the amphipods collected in a German stream catchment, the Boye, a tributary of the river Emscher. The ciliate showed morphological characteristics fitting the genus Metacollinia. Different life stages of variable size occurred simultaneously in the hemocoel throughout the hosts' body. The tomont had 40-47 slightly spiraled kineties, a non-ciliated cortical band, a large macronucleus, and contractile vacuoles arranged

Microbial artists: the role of parasite microbiomes in explaining colour polymorphism among amphipods and potential link to host manipulation.

Parasite infections are increasingly reported to change the microbiome of the parasitized hosts, while parasites bring their own microbes to what can be a multi-dimensional interaction. For instance, a recent hypothesis suggests that the microbial communities harboured by parasites may play a role in the well-documented ability of many parasites to manipulate host phenotype, and explain why the degree to which host phenotype is altered varies among conspecific parasites. Here, we explored whether the microbiomes of both hosts and parasites are associated with variation in host manipulation by

Cellular Immune Response of an Endemic Lake Baikal Amphipod to Indigenous Pseudomonas sp.

Studies of invertebrates have shown that the internal environment of crustaceans is not always sterile in normal conditions, and in many species, it can be populated by microorganisms even in the absence of any visible pathological processes in the body. This observation raises the question of whether genetically modified indigenous hemolymph microorganisms can be used for biotechnological purposes inside the crustacean either as local producers of some compounds or as sensors to physiological parameters. In this study, we tested the ability of the bacteria isolated from the hemolymph of the a

A new family for Cephalotrema elasticum (Digenea) based on molecular data, with notes on the status of the definitive host population.

The host diversity, complex life cycle and distribution of digeneans underline their value as bioindicators of ecosystem health. We examined the intestinal digenean trematode Cephalotrema elasticum of insectivorous mammals, sampled from Gammarus balcanicus (Crustacea: Amphipoda) as second intermediate hosts. The species is particularly relevant as part of the helminth species complex associated with protected mammals. Our study is based on an intensive survey of helminths in 8920 gammarids collected from 38 localities in Slovakia, Poland, and France. DNA sequences for three markers (18S rDNA,

Shedding light on amphipod behaviour: Baseline locomotion behaviour for laboratory ecotoxicology experiments.

Behavioural endpoints offer a sensitive, non-invasive alternative to traditional mortality assays. Yet, they remain underutilized in regulatory frameworks due to a lack of standardised methodologies and baseline behavioural data. This study investigates the baseline locomotion of the marine amphipod Marinogammarus marinus to external light triggers to support standardised laboratory behavioural assays. Using an automated observation chamber, here we tracked swimming behaviour in response to light stimuli, quantifying locomotion as distance travelled. Groups of eight amphipods were tested in la

Psychrobacter sp. XL111, a novel bacterial species from hadal amphipods: genomic insights into environmental adaptation and biotechnological potential.

The hadal zone presents one of the most extreme environments on Earth. While amphipods dominate this realm, the adaptive mechanisms of their resident gut microbiota are not fully understood, which is essential both for understanding the limits of life and for unlocking novel microbial resources. This study investigates Psychrobacter sp. XL111, a novel bacterial species isolated from the gut of hadal amphipods, to elucidate its survival strategies and biotechnological potential. Pan-genome analysis confirms the high genomic plasticity of this genus and highlights the genomic innovations in gene

Evaluation of precopulatory pairing behaviour and male fertility in a marine amphipod exposed to plastic additives.

Plastics contain a mixture of chemical additives that can leach into the environment and potentially cause harmful effects on reproduction and the endocrine system. Two of these chemicals, N-butyl benzenesulfonamide (NBBS) and triphenyl phosphate (TPHP), are among the top 30 organic chemicals detected in surface and groundwater and are currently placed on international watchlist for evaluation. Although bans have been placed on legacy pollutants such as diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP), their persistence remains a concern. This study aimed to examine the impact of plas

The Differential Effects of Salinity Level on Chlorpyrifos and Imidacloprid Toxicity to an Estuarine Amphipod.

Agricultural activity within coastal watersheds results in estuaries becoming the receiving environment for pesticide inputs. In estuaries, salinity can alter insecticide responses of exposed crustaceans. The acute toxicity of environmentally relevant doses of chlorpyrifos and imidacloprid were examined using the euryhaline amphipod Gammarus lawrencianus at 20 and 30 Practical Salinity Units (PSU). Responses were recorded every 24 h until an incipient (threshold) L(E)C50 was reached. For chlorpyrifos, LC50 ranged from 0.1 to 0.5 µg/L and was two-fold higher at 30 vs. 20 PSU at all time-points

Prior infections or defence priming: what determines the risk of trematode infections in amphipod hosts?

Inducible defences against parasites that are only activated when needed can mitigate the cost of immune or behavioural evasion of parasites. Priming of the immune system and activation of behavioural defences can follow exposure to cues associated with imminent infection risk. In contrast, prior infection can cause immune depression or leave the host with less energy to defend itself against further infections. We investigate the priming of anti-parasite defences and the effect of prior infections in the amphipod Paracalliope fluviatilis, the second intermediate host of the trematode Coitocae

Live imaging reveals the progenitors and cell dynamics of limb regeneration.

Regeneration is a complex and dynamic process, mobilizing diverse cell types and remodelling tissues over long time periods. Tracking cell fate and behaviour during regeneration in active adult animals is especially challenging. Here, we establish continuous live imaging of leg regeneration at single-cell resolution in the crustacean Parhyale hawaiensis. By live recordings encompassing the first 4-5 days after amputation, we capture the cellular events that contribute to wound closure and morphogenesis of regenerating legs with unprecedented resolution and temporal detail. Using these recordin

Potential impact of Dare County landfills on Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge.

Runoff of leachate from East Lake and Dare County Construction and Demolition Debris landfills has the potential to impact wildlife resources at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, Dare and Hyde Counties, North Carolina. Sediment quality of samples collected in August 2000 at 14 locations down-gradient from the landfills was assessed by measuring metal and organic contaminants in the sediments, chronic toxicity of solid-phase sediment (28-d static-renewal exposures; survival and growth as test endpoints) and acute toxicity of sediment porewater (96-h static exposures) to Hyalella azteca

The insecticide imidacloprid causes mortality of the freshwater amphipod Gammarus pulex by interfering with feeding behavior.

If an organism does not feed, it dies of starvation. Even though some insecticides which are used to control pests in agriculture can interfere with feeding behavior of insects and other invertebrates, the link from chemical exposure via affected feeding activity to impaired life history traits, such as survival, has not received much attention in ecotoxicology. One of these insecticides is the neonicotinoid imidacloprid, a neurotoxic substance acting specifically on the insect nervous system. We show that imidacloprid has the potential to indirectly cause lethality in aquatic invertebrate pop

Ammonia and chromate interaction explains unresolved Hyalella azteca mortality in Flanders' sediment bioassays.

Agricultural, industrial and household chemicals are emitted in large rivers along populated areas, transported by water and deposited in sediments, posing (eco)toxicological risks. Sediments have received less attention than surface waters, likely because of the intrinsic complexity of interactions between sediment constituents complicating correct framing of exposures. Sadly, thorough assessment of the in situ behavior of sediment constituents in bioassays is often not practical. Alternatively, we related physicochemical properties of sediments from field testing to results from bioassays. T

Subcellular compartmentalization of cadmium, nickel, and lead in Gammarus fossarum: Comparison of methods.

Knowledge of the subcellular behavior of toxicants, mainly metals, in living organisms is fundamental for understanding their toxicological consequences at individual and trans-generation levels and throughout the food web. However, different partitioning methodologies are available in the literature, particularly concerning the cytosolic fraction. Different cytosolic compounds, metallothionein-like proteins (MTLPs), and non-metallothionein-like proteins (non-MTLPs) could be separated by size exclusion chromatography or by heat treatment and centrifugation. Our results show changes of metal pa

Microanatomy and ultrastructure of praesoma in acanthellae of Arhythmorhynchus teres Van Cleave, 1920 (Acanthocephala: Palaeacanthocephala).

The structure of the praesoma in the acanthocephalan Arhythmorhynchus teres Van Cleave, 1920 at the middle acanthella I stage has been examined by light and transmission electron microscopy methods. Acanthocephalan specimens were retrieved from naturally infected intermediate hosts, Bulychevia ochotensis (Brandt, 1851) (Amphipoda, Talitridae). In the studied acanthellae, the primordia of the proboscis receptacle, proboscis, circular muscles, proboscis retractor, and cerebral ganglion are clearly differentiated in the praesoma. The tegument contained giant nuclei arranged into annular rows orie
