[Microsurgical replantation of traumatic amputated lip].

This is a case report of two patients with traumatic amputated lip due to respectively human bite and bicycle head-on-car collision. Both patients were successfully treated by microsurgical replantation within 24 hours and with post-operative leech treatment. Furthermore, a MEDLINE/PubMed search was performed for all scientific English articles of lip amputation and replantation using microsurgery. We want to address the importance of preserving amputated parts and the necessity of 24-hour access to plastic surgery and microsurgery in trauma if needed.

Epidemiology of traumatic upper limb amputations.

INTRODUCTION: While published data on functional outcomes after upper limb amputations are plentiful, epidemiology data are relatively rare. This led us to performing an epidemiology study of traumatic upper limb amputations at our facility. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study spanned a 10-year period of cases seen at the SOS Main (Hand emergency center) of the Nancy University Hospital in France. Patients who suffered traumatic amputation of the upper limb were identified and divided into two groups: replantation and surgical amputation. All anatomical amputation levels were retai

A Systematic Review of Outcomes after Revision Amputation for Treatment of Traumatic Finger Amputation.

BACKGROUND: Revision amputation is often the treatment for traumatic finger amputation injuries. However, patient outcomes are inadequately reported, and their impact is poorly understood. The authors performed a systematic review to evaluate outcomes of revision amputation and amputation wound coverage techniques. METHODS: The authors searched all available English literature in the PubMed and Embase databases for articles reporting outcomes of nonreplantation treatments for traumatic finger amputation injuries, including revision amputation, local digital flaps, skin grafting, and conservat

Traumatic upper-limb amputation: The process toward acceptance.

INTRODUCTION: After traumatic upper-limb amputation (TULA), one-third of patients develop traumatic pathological grief (PG). However, are the other two-thirds unscathed? The main aim of the present study was to assess the rate of TULA victims claiming to have dealt with the consequences and showing no PG. The secondary objective was to determine positive and negative factors enabling and preventing coping. METHOD: A retrospective clinical study was conducted over an 11-year period in all adult TULA cases in our department. Assessment was on questionnaire. PG was assessed on the ICG (Inventory

Reconstruction following traumatic partial amputation of the ear.

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction following traumatic amputation of the external ear remains a unique challenge to the plastic surgeon. The authors report a series of ear reconstructions with autologous costal cartilage in patients following traumatic partial amputation of the ear. Technical points regarding the carving of the cartilage framework and methods of skin coverage are discussed. METHODS: Fifty partial ear reconstructions with autologous costal cartilage were performed over a 4-year period. All patients had suffered previous traumatic amputation of part of the external auricle due to bite

Mobility of persons after traumatic lower limb amputation.

The objective of this study was to determine the influence of time span since amputation on mobility of persons experiencing traumatic lower limb amputation. A special questionnaire was sent to such persons and responses were analysed statistically. The subjects comprised 223 persons after traumatic lower limb amputation, residents of Slovenia. We discovered that 186 (74.2%) are using their prosthesis for more than 7 hours per day, 109 (52.2%) are able to walk outdoors without crutches, and 129 (57.8%) climb more than 20 stairs per day. In addition, those who are walking without crutches, walk

Traumatic amputation. Mechanisms of injury, treatment, and rehabilitation.

Traumatic amputations are one of many injuries that can occur to the body's musculoskeletal systems. Degloving, partial and total amputations are common types of traumatic injuries. Since traumatic amputations are very life threatening, emergency treatment must be initiated quickly and directed toward profuse blood loss and potential hypovolemia. Not only do traumatic amputees undergo extreme physiological changes, but they must also encounter the psychological trauma of an amputation. Due to a loss of body part(s) and alteration in body image, the amputee often experiences the stages of griev

External Auditory Canal Stenosis After Traumatic Auricular Amputation.

BACKGROUND: The auricles are easily injured or amputated in case of head trauma. Inadequate treatment of the external auditory canal (EAC) after auricular injury is often seen and can lead to significant complications of the EAC. CASE REPORT: The authors report 4 cases of auricular injury or amputations. In all patients inadequate first treatment led to stenosis of the EAC. Three patients required recanalization of the EAC because of hearing loss and the risk of further complications. CONCLUSION: Treatment of auricular injury should consist of (pre-emptive) packing of the EAC with antibiotic

[Reconstruction surgery after traumatic amputation of the thumb].

Reconstruction of the thumb after traumatic mutilation constitutes a delicate indication in order to select the technique most adapted to the patient's functional needs and esthetic desires. Pollicizations of healthy fingers are now used less frequently, except in the clinical context of very proximal amputations, but amputations of mutilated fingers remain a frequent indication. Progressive lengthening was associated with a high complication rate, although these complications have remained minimal. Osteoplastic reconstruction is still occasionally indicated in its modern version of composite

Metacarpal lengthening after traumatic amputation of the thumb.

In nine patients of median age 34 years who had sustained an amputation of the thumb at a median 24 (5 to 131) months previously, we lengthened the first metacarpal by 30 (17 to 36) mm. Seven amputations had been through the proximal phalanx and two through the metacarpal. The first two patients had autogenous grafting at a second stage, but the other seven had callotasis alone. In these patients the external fixators were removed at a median 189 (115 to 271) days after osteotomy. In six cases the adductor pollicis tendon was transferred proximally and the first web deepened. There was late fr

Total reconstruction of the auricle after traumatic amputation.

We report a technique of auricular replantation used in a case of traumatic amputation. The principal difficulties encountered in this type of replantation are mentioned, and ways of avoiding them are suggested. All the skin of the ear was removed except for that of the anterior surface of the conch. At this site, the cartilage received small, multiple perforations to allow for nutrition of the corresponding skin. The remainder of the auricular cartilage was covered by a skin flap undermined from the mastoid region. Three months later, the retro-auricular region was freed and covered with a to

Pollicization of the index finger for traumatic thumb amputation.

BACKGROUND: Indications for pollicization of the index finger have decreased since the toe-to-thumb transfer and wraparound flap have been developed for thumb reconstruction. Pollicization, however, remains a useful method of thumb reconstruction depending on the amputation level, age, and patients' requests. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the authors' results and to clarify indications for pollicization. METHODS: Eight patients treated by pollicization of the index finger after thumb amputation were reviewed retrospectively. Five men and three women were included. The age at surge

Traumatic amputation of the upper limb: replantation of the arm.

From 1970 to 1985, 13 patients were treated as a result of an upper limb traumatic sub-amputation. Three of them were younger than 15 years and another one was only 3 years old at the time of the trauma. All the elements involved in the treatment of the lesions are described. When it was possible, an end-to-end anastomosis was used for the repair of arteries and veins. Otherwise, when the loss of tissue was marked, a saphenous vein graft was used. The fracture was treated, when possible, with an intramedullary fixation, surely less traumatizing for soft tissues than a plate. The repair of the
