[Exercise tolerance in mitral stenosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: evaluation by anaerobic threshold and radionuclide ventriculography].

Serial radionuclide ventriculography was performed using a newly developed "real-time" system, and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF), stroke volume (SV), and cardiac output (CO) were measured during graded supine exercise in five patients with mitral stenosis (MS), in five patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and in five healthy subjects. Simultaneous pulmonary gas exchange analysis permitted determining the anaerobic threshold, which is the point during incremental exercise when lactate begins to accumulate in the blood

[Use of anaerobic threshold for determining the level of exercise capacity in rehabilitation of patients operated on for heart defects].

An analysis of results of spiroergometry and radionuclide ventriculography in the mixed group of cardiosurgical patients allowed to reveal a reliable accretion of fraction of expulsion of the left ventricle during transition from the state of rest to work at the level of anaerobic threshold and absence of accretion of this index in further increase of exercise. The results obtained allowed to propose the use of anaerobic threshold equal to 60% of the threshold uptake of oxygen as an indicator in choosing the optimum intensity of the training exercise of patients operated on for heart diseases.

Improvements in exercise tolerance with an exercise intensity above the anaerobic threshold in patients with acute myocardial infarction.

Anaerobic threshold (AT) from cardiopulmonary exercise tests (CPX) is the standard for measuring exercise intensity among patients with cardiovascular disease in Japan. However, it remains controversial whether AT represents the safety limit for exercise intensity in patients with cardiovascular disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate cardiac rehabilitation (CR) efficacy and safety with exercise intensities above the AT and at a traditional AT in a randomized trial. The participants included 57 patients who were admitted to the outpatient CR unit with a diagnosis of acute myocard

Threshold and recovery of anaerobic digestion under high ammonia stress: Influence of COD/NH4+ ratio and CO2 enrichment.

This study underscores the importance of maintaining an optimal chemical oxygen demand to ammonia (COD/NH4+) ratio to ensure stable anaerobic digestion (AD) performance. The optimal COD/NH4+ ratio ranges from 24.0 to 33.0, while a critical threshold is identified between 11.0 and 17.0, below which AD performance declines. However, the AD of protein-rich substrates typically operates under an "inhibited steady-state" condition, characterized by a lower COD/NH4+ level. At lower COD/NH4+ ratios, the acetoclastic methanogenesis is inhibited, while hydrogenotrophic methanogens remain active, as evi

Development of deep-learning models for real-time anaerobic threshold and peak VO2 prediction during cardiopulmonary exercise testing.

AIMS: Exercise intolerance is a clinical feature of patients with heart failure (HF). Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is the first-line examination for assessing exercise capacity in patients with HF. However, the need for extensive experience in assessing anaerobic threshold (AT) and the potential risk associated with the excessive exercise load when measuring peak oxygen uptake (peak VO2) limit the utility of CPET. This study aimed to use deep-learning approaches to identify AT in real time during testing (defined as real-time AT) and to predict peak VO2 at real-time AT. METHODS AND

Ratings of perceived exertion at the ventilatory anaerobic threshold in people with coronary heart disease: A CARE CR study.

BACKGROUND: Exercise prescription guidelines for individuals undergoing cardiovascular rehabilitation (CR) are often based on heart rate training zones and rating of perceived exertion (RPE). United Kingdom guidelines indicate that patients should exercise at an intensity of RPE 11 to 14. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine the accuracy of this approach by comparing this RPE range with an objectively measured marker of exercise intensity, the ventilatory anaerobic threshold (VAT), and examine whether baseline directly determined cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) affects the association between VA

Predicting Heart Rate at the Anaerobic Threshold Using a Machine Learning Model Based on a Large-Scale Population Dataset.

Background/Objectives: For effective exercise prescription for patients with cardiovascular disease, it is important to determine the target heart rate at the level of the anaerobic threshold (AT-HR). The AT-HR is mainly determined by cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). The aim of this study is to develop a machine learning (ML) model to predict the AT-HR solely from non-exercise clinical features. Methods: From consecutive 21,482 cases of CPET between 2 February 2008 and 1 December 2021, an appropriate subset was selected to train our ML model. Data consisted of 78 features, including ag

Old and new equations for maximal and anaerobic threshold heart rate prediction in coronary heart disease in Chinese population.

BACKGROUND: The prediction of maximal heart rate (MHR) and anaerobic threshold heart rate (HRAT) in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD), particularly among the Chinese population, remains a significant challenge. Existing equations for MHR prediction are primarily designed for healthy individuals not on medication for optimized β-blocker (BB) therapy, showing limited efficacy for individuals on various drug regimens. Moreover, the prediction of HRAT lacks established formulas. This study aims to develop equations for MHR and HRAT, assess the accuracy of historical MHR formulas, and exam

Noninvasive determination of the anaerobic threshold in canoeing, cross-country skiing, cycling, roller, and ice-skating, rowing, and walking.

The relationship between velocity (V) and heart rate (HR) was determined in four canoeists, 42 cross-country skiers, 73 cyclists, nine ice-skaters, 10 roller-skaters, 32 rowers, and 20 walkers. The athletes were asked to increase their work intensity progressively, from low to submaximal velocities; HRs were determined by ECG in roller-, ice-skating, and walking, or read on a cardiofrequency meter in canoeing, cross-country skiing, cycling, and rowing. In all the athletes examined the linearity of the V-HR relationship was maintained up to a submaximal speed (deflection velocity, Vd), beyond w

Is heart rate variability a feasible method to determine anaerobic threshold in progressive resistance exercise in coronary artery disease?

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown that the magnitude of the metabolic and autonomic responses during progressive resistance exercise (PRE) is associated with the determination of the anaerobic threshold (AT). AT is an important parameter to determine intensity in dynamic exercise. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the metabolic and cardiac autonomic responses during dynamic resistance exercise in patients with Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). METHOD: Twenty men (age = 63±7 years) with CAD [Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction (LVEF) = 60±10%] underwent a PRE protocol on a leg press until maximal ex

Effect of carvedilol on heart rate response to cardiopulmonary exercise up to the anaerobic threshold in patients with subacute myocardial infarction.

Resting heart rate (HR) plus 20 or 30 beats per minute (bpm), i.e., a simplified substitute for HR at the anaerobic threshold (AT), is used as a tool for exercise prescription without cardiopulmonary exercise testing data. While resting HR plus 20 bpm is recommended for patients undergoing beta-blocker therapy, the effects of specific beta blockers on HR response to exercise up to the AT (ΔAT HR) in patients with subacute myocardial infarction (MI) are unclear. This study examined whether carvedilol treatment affects ΔAT HR in subacute MI patients. MI patients were divided into two age- and se

[The importance of the noninvasive determination of the anaerobic threshold for assessing the heart pumping function in patients with mitral and aortic heart defects].

The anaerobic threshold (AT) was determined in 68 patients suffering from heart disease and in 18 normal persons during the treadmill test according to the parameters of ventilation and gas exchange. The dynamics of the oxygen debt was assessed in accordance with the dynamics of the recovery coefficient (RC). It was established that in the assessment of pump function of the heart, the sensitivity of the RC was 89%, that of the AT 51%. It was also found that the AT, as an indicator of the decompensation of pump function of the heart, can only be used in patients belonging to functional classes

Noninvasive assessment of the anaerobic threshold in endurance athletes: an evidence-based narrative review of methods, validity, and field feasibility.

INTRODUCTION OR BACKGROUND: The anaerobic threshold (AnT) marks the transition between heavy and severe exercise intensity domains and guides training prescription and performance monitoring. Criterion methods (blood lactate and gas exchange) are accurate but invasive, costly, or impractical outside laboratories, prompting the search for noninvasive surrogates. This review evaluates the validity of these estimation procedures rather than the underlying physiology. SOURCES OF DATA: MEDLINE (via PubMed) was searched from inception without language restrictions, supplemented by reference-list an

Usefulness of anaerobic threshold to peak oxygen uptake ratio to determine the severity and pathophysiological condition of chronic heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Anaerobic threshold (AT) and peak oxygen uptake (V˙O2) are well known as indicators of severity and prognosis of heart failure. Since these parameters are regulated by many factors, multiple organ dysfunction may occur in chronic heart failure, and these two parameters would vary among patients. However, it is not clear whether AT and peak V˙O2 deteriorate similarly. Therefore, we planned to compare the degree of deterioration of these two parameters using a ratio of AT and peak V˙O2 (%AT/peak), and evaluated its significance in heart failure subjects. METHODS: One hundred ninety-

The Ratio of Oxygen Uptake From Ventilatory Anaerobic Threshold to Respiratory Compensation Point Is Maintained During Incremental Exercise in Older Adults.

INTRODUCTION: The period from ventilatory anaerobic threshold (VAT) to respiratory compensation point (RCP) during incremental exercise (isocapnic buffering phase) has been associated with exercise tolerance and skeletal muscle composition. However, several reports compare younger and older healthy adults, and specific age-related changes are unclear. This study aimed to examine the oxygen uptake (VO2) from VAT to RCP and its change over time in younger and older healthy adults. METHODS: A total of 126 consecutive participants were divided into two groups (95 younger and 31 older than 50 year
