[Anal and vulvar hidradenoma papilliferum are similar: A study of 14 cases].

INTRODUCTION: Hidradenoma papilliferum (HP) is an adenomatous proliferation of mammary-like glands. These glands are located preferentially on the vaginal labia, the perineum and the anal skin. About ninety percent of HP occur on the vulva, with anal localization being much less common. AIM OF THE STUDY: To analyze the clinical and histological characteristics of anal HP and compare them to those seen on the vulva based on the literature. METHOD: A monocentric retrospective analysis (in the medical and surgical proctology department of the Saint-Joseph Hospital Group, Paris) of patients for

Perianal Paget Disease: Different Entities With the Same Name.

Extramammary Paget disease (EMPD) is a rare form of cancer that involves skin areas rich in apocrine glands. The common sites of occurrence include the vulva, perianal region, perineum, and axilla. Perianal Paget disease (PPD) is a subset of EMPD, which arises in the perianal skin. The disease commonly presents with a thickened plaque-like lesion with erythema or white scaly appearance. It is generally classified into two categories based on the origin of the tumor cells: (1) primary PPD if the tumor arises from intraepidermal cells and (2) secondary PPD if cancer originates from the underlyin

Problems associated with the surgical treatment of diseases involving the perineal region.

The problems associated with perineal surgery depend on the surgical procedure performed. Problems are encountered before, during, and after surgery. Appropriate preoperative assessment, proper surgical technique, and thorough postoperative management are required for successful results. Immediate recognition and treatment of problems is essential.

Metastatic disease in a dog with a well-differentiated perianal gland tumor.

Fine-needle aspirates from a perianal mass on an 8-year-old, intact male, Miniature Poodle presenting for tenesmus showed a uniform population of well-differentiated hepatoid cells with no notable criteria of malignancy. The cytologic diagnosis was a perianal gland tumor, with adenoma likely given the cytomorphology. The abdominal ultrasound revealed multiple, markedly enlarged, intra-abdominal lymph nodes. LN aspirates also showed well-differentiated polygonal, hepatoid cells displaying no notable cellular atypia. The presence of the metastasis led to the interpretation of a well-differentiat

Detection of carcinoma micrometastases in bone marrow of dogs and cats using conventional and cell block cytology.

BACKGROUND: The presence of human breast carcinoma micrometastases in bone marrow is associated with poor overall survival, poor breast-cancer-specific survival, poor disease-free survival, and poor distant disease-free survival. In veterinary practice, the detection of micrometastases as a component of clinical staging is a routine practice for lymphomas and mast cell tumors, but not for carcinomas. OBJECTIVES: This prospective study evaluated whether the identification of micrometastases from various carcinomas in dogs and cats in bone marrow using cell block cytology is technically feasibl

A complication probability study for a definitive-intent, moderately hypofractionated image-guided intensity-modulated radiotherapy protocol for anal sac adenocarcinoma in dogs.

Previous trials showed the importance of administering radiation therapy (RT) with small doses per fraction in canine pelvic tumours to maintain acceptable toxicity levels. With increased accuracy/precision of RT, namely intensity-modulated RT (IMRT), this approach might be challenged. Theoretical toxicity calculations for a new definitive-intent moderately hypofractionated RT protocol for canine anal sac adenocarcinomas (ASAC) were performed, focussing on the risk of toxicity in pelvic organs at risk (OAR). Computed tomography datasets of 18 dogs with stage 3b ASAC were included. Re-planning

Evaluation of an anal sac adenocarcinoma tumor in a Spitz dog.

A 9-year-old emasculated male Spitz with tenesmus and constipation had a subcutaneous mass at the left ventral aspect of the anus with history of polyuria and polydipsia. A complete blood cell count, serum biochemistry panel, and urinalysis (cystocentesis sample) were evaluated. Abnormalities in the serum biochemistry panel included a mildly elevated serum cholesterol concentration (7.28 mmol/L; reference interval, 2.70-5.94 mmol/L), increased serum alkaline phosphatase activity (184 U/L; reference interval, 9-90 U/L), alanine transaminase (122 U/L; reference interval, 5-60 U/L) activity and a

[Anatomoclinical and immunohistochemical study of hidradenoma papilliferum, a tumor deriving from anogenital mammary-like glands].

AIM: To specify the clinical, histopathological and immunochemical features in a large series of hidradenoma papilliferum patients and to point out similarities with breast disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a monocentric retrospective histopathological study. Cases of hidradenoma papilliferum seen at the dermatopathology laboratory of Strasbourg (1977-2017) were included and analyzed with hematoxylin-eosin staining and immunostaining. Diagnosis was confirmed where tubular formations and papillary proliferations were noted and were lined by a luminal layer of columnar cells surrounde

Omentalization of cystic sublumbar lymph node metastases for long-term palliation of tenesmus and dysuria in a dog with anal sac adenocarcinoma.

A 13-year-old castrated male Bassett Hound was examined because of a 2-week history of severe constipation and tenesmus. Radiography revealed a large cystic mass in the caudal portion of the abdomen that was compressing the urethra and obstructing the pelvic canal. A small perianal mass was also noticed in the region of the left anal sac. Exploratory surgery was performed, but the mass was deemed unresectable. Instead, the mass was incised, drained, and omentalized in an attempt to establish continuous drainage after surgery. Cytologic evaluation of the perianal mass was consistent with a diag

Analysis of Dual-Energy Computed Tomography Imaging for the Evaluation of Lymph Node Metastasis in Canine Anal Sac Gland Adenocarcinoma: A Case Report.

A 9-year-old neutered male miniature schnauzer was referred to our facility with polyuria, polydipsia, persistent hypercalcemia, hypophosphatemia, and elevated parathyroid hormone-related protein. Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) imaging revealed a mass in the left anal gland (LAG) and enlargement of the left medial iliac lymph node (LML) and the left internal iliac lymph node (LIL). The mass was surgically removed, and the histopathological diagnosis was anal sac gland adenocarcinoma, with metastasis to the LML and LIL. The pathological findings were concordant with those obtained from

Extremes on the benign-malignant tumour spectrum: Distinct transcriptomic landscapes between two common canine perianal neoplasms based on the hallmarks of cancer.

The hallmarks of cancer describe stepwise changes in cellular functions and molecular pathways of tumour cells that undergo malignant progression. Although 14 hallmarks have been proposed, their manifestation at the molecular level across different tumour types remains incompletely understood. Here, we hypothesised that hallmark-associated transcriptomic signatures reflect the contrasting biological behaviours of a pair of a benign and a malignant tumour. To this end, we compared the two most common canine perianal tumours, the highly malignant apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma (AGASAC) a

Perianal mucinous adenocarcinoma.

Perianal mucinous adenocarcinoma, also known as anal duct or anal gland carcinoma, is a rare tumor usually associated with chronic fistulae-in-ano. Whether the tumor occurs primarily and the fistula is a secondary manifestation, or whether this tumor arises in a chronic fistulous tract is debatable. Diagnosis can be made only by open deep biopsy of the buttock mass, and, due to the low grade histologic appearance of the malignancy, an incorrect diagnosis is frequently made. Treatment is abdominoperineal resection with wide removal of the buttock mass.

Hidradenoma papilliferum with mixed histopathologic features of syringocystadenoma papilliferum and anogenital mammary-like glands.

A case of hidradenoma papilliferum with mixed features of syringocystadenoma papilliferum (SCAP) and anogenital mammary-like glands is reported. A single, fresh red-colored nodule developed in the sulcus between the labia majora and minora of a 49-year-old Japanese woman. Histopathologically, the tumor showed epithelial lining with apocrine secretion and slight connective tissues characteristics. Our case was unique because, like SCAP, the tumor was connected to the epidermis and cystic invaginations extended downward into the deep dermis. In addition, beneath the tumor, tubular structures tha

Hidradenoma papilliferum with mixed histopathologic features of syringocystadenoma papilliferum and anogenital mammary-like glands: report of a case and review of the literature.

Hidradenoma papilliferum of the anogenital region was previously believed to originate from apocrine glands but has recently been accepted as originating from anogenital mammary-like glands. We describe a case of hidradenoma papilliferum with mixed features of syringocystadenoma papilliferum and mammary-like glands from the left labia majora of a 25-year-old woman. Histopathologically, the lesion showed an epithelial lining with apocrine secretion, and like syringocystadenoma papilliferum, the lesion extended from the epithelium as invaginations into the dermis. Adjacent to this lesion were du

Electrolyte disturbances and cardiac arrhythmias in a dog following pamidronate, calcitonin, and furosemide administration for hypercalcemia of malignancy.

A 13-year-old dog was diagnosed with hypercalcemia of malignancy associated with adenocarcinoma of the anal sacs. Hypercalcemia was treated with intravenous (IV) 0.9% sodium chloride (NaCl), furosemide, calcitonin, and pamidronate. Hypomagnesemia was documented by 72 hours following a single, IV dose of pamidronate. The dog subsequently underwent surgery to remove the primary tumors, and multiple cardiac arrhythmias occurred during anesthesia. This case documents electrolyte abnormalities in a dog following treatment with pamidronate in conjunction with other therapies used to manage hypercalc

Hidradenoma papilliferum of the vulva in association with an anogenital mammary-like gland.

Hidradenoma papilliferum (HP) is a benign adnexal neoplasm which preferentially develops in the anogenital region of women. Although the origin of HP was previously thought to be an apocrine sweat gland, recent studies have suggested that it may derive from the anogenital mammary-like gland (MLG). In this paper, we present a 43-year-old Japanese woman with hidradenoma papilliferum of the vulva. The lesion developed 7 years prior to her visit, and clinically appeared as a skin-colored cystic nodule. Histopathological examination revealed that the neoplasm was formed by the tubular structures co
