[An immunosuppressed woman in her seventies with night sweats and weight loss].

BACKGROUND: Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis is an emerging tick-borne pathogen with widespread distribution in Ixodes ricinus ticks in Europe and Asia. It has been found to cause chronic infections, particularly in immunosuppressed individuals. Common symptoms include relapsing fever, night sweats and thromboembolic episodes, likely due to endovascular infection. CASE PRESENTATION: A patient in her seventies developed persistent night sweats and moderate weight loss that persisted for four months prior to evaluation. There was no history of fever or organ-specific symptoms. Prior diseases

Diversity of Ehrlichia spp., Anaplasma spp. and Neorickettsia spp. in vampire bats.

Although bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) act as natural reservoirs for many zoonotic pathogens around the world, few studies have investigated the occurrence of Anaplasmataceae agents in bats, especially vampire bats. The family Anaplasmataceae (order Rickettsiales) encompasses obligate intracellular bacteria of the genera Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, Neorickettsia, Neoehrlichia, Wolbachia, and Allocryptoplasma. The present study aimed to investigate, using molecular techniques, the presence of species of Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, and Neorickettsia in vampire bats sampled in northern Brazil. Between 2017 and

Presence of Rickettsia aeschlimannii, 'Candidatus Rickettsia barbariae' and Coxiella burnetii in ticks from livestock in Northwestern Algeria.

Livestock and their ectoparasites are involved in the epidemiology of several zoonotic diseases. Studies regarding the molecular detection of infectious agents in ticks from Northwestern Algeria are scarce. Thus, the presence of spotted fever group Rickettsia spp., Anaplasmataceae microorganisms and Coxiella burnetii was investigated in ticks collected from ruminants in Sidi Bel Abbes and Saida provinces. Rickettsia aeschlimannii was detected in one Hyalomma excavatum pool and one H. marginatum pool. Moreover, 'Candidatus Rickettsia barbariae' was found in one H. excavatum and six Rhipicephalu

[Tick-borne CandidatusNeoehrlichiamikurensis was the cause of fever in a haematological patient].

A 77-year-old woman had a history of mantle cell lymphoma, splenechtomy and rituximab-treatment. For six months she had fever, night sweats and weight loss. Thorough investigations did not reveal the cause of the fever, and empiric antibiotics had no effect. Eventually she developed an erythema nodosum-like rash on both legs. A biopsy was sent for 16S rRNA PCR, which was positive for Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis. She was treated with doxycycline with resolution of all symptoms. This is the first case report of neoehrlichiosis in Denmark, and the first case diagnosed on a skin biopsy.

Omentalisation of perinephric pseudocysts in a cat.

An 11-year-old male domestic shorthaired cat was presented with behavioural disturbances and abdominal distension of two days' duration. Haemobartonella felis was found on routine haematology and serum biochemistry showed mild azotaemia. Abdominocentesis revealed a transudate. Bilateral perinephric fluid accumulations were observed on ultrasonography and chronic nephrosclerosis was diagnosed on needle biopsies of the kidney. A celiotomy with resection of the major portion of both cyst walls was performed. The omentum was extended along the floor of the abdomen, across the ventral aspect of bot

Molecular Prevalence of Anaplasma marginale and Ehrlichia in Domestic Large Ruminants and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus Ticks From Southern Luzon, Philippines.

Anaplasmosis and ehrlichiosis are tick-borne rickettsial diseases that cause significant economic losses in the livestock industry worldwide. Although bovine anaplasmosis is known to be endemic in the Philippines, epidemiological data is fragmented. Moreover, little is known about bovine ehrlichiosis in the country. In this study, the prevalence of Anaplasma marginale and Ehrlichia in cattle and water buffalo from provinces in the southern part of Luzon, Philippines, was investigated through PCR. Blood samples from 620 animals comprised of 512 cattle and 108 water buffalo and 195 tick samples

Neoehrlichia mikurensis-An emerging opportunistic tick-borne infection in immunosuppressed patients.

BACKGROUND: Neoehrlichia mikurensis (N. mikurensis) is a newly discovered tick-borne pathogen that can inflict life-threatening illness in immunocompromised patients. N. mikurensis infection is only detectable by polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based methodologies. We describe three distinct clinical manifestations of N. mikurensis infection (neoehrlichiosis) in Danish patients receiving B-lymphocyte-depleting therapy, rituximab, for underlying hematological, rheumatological, or neurological disorders. All three patients went through a protracted pre-diagnostic period. METHODS: N. mikurensis

Detection of Ehrlichia spp., Candidatus Neoehrlichia sp. (FU98) and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in Germany.

Vector-borne diseases pose a growing challenge to public health. Effective surveillance, interdisciplinary cooperation in line with the One Health approach, and prevention and control strategies are therefore essential to reduce the risk of future outbreaks and burden of disease in the long term. Identifying and investigating sentinels can help in this regard. In this study, 537 red fox (vulpes) spleen samples from three regions in Germany (Berlin, Brandenburg, Arnsberg administrative region) were tested for Anaplasmataceae and Rickettsia spp. using PCR. Only 3% of the samples (n = 15) tested

Neoehrlichia mikurensis in Ticks and Tick-Bitten Persons, Sweden and Finland, 2008-2009.

By using PCR testing, we found Neoehrlichia mikurensis DNA in 1.1% of ticks removed from persons in Sweden and Finland. Symptoms developed in 2 immunocompetent persons. Despite low transmission risk, infection can occur after short tick attachment. Our findings highlight the need to consider N. mikurensis in patients with unexplained symptoms after tick bite.

Hematotropic parasites of translocated raccoons in the southeast.

Ninety-four raccoons (Procyon lotor) from 6 southeastern states were examined for hematotropic parasites, to evaluate the carrier potential of these animals as they relate to translocation and release for hunting purposes. Four species of hematotropic parasites were identified, viz, Babesia procyonis, Haemobartonella procyoni, Hepatozoon procyonis, and Trypanosoma cruzi. Lesions in infected raccoons were associated only with H procyonis. Babesia procyonis was enzootic in populations of raccoons used as sources for exportation and in raccoons resident in typical release areas. Haemobartonella p

[The course of trypanosoma cruzi infection in nonsplenectomized SPE rats with and without Haemobartonella muris infection (author's transl)].

Rats were infected with H. muris from the first to the second week of their life. Four weeks later 20 of the infected rats were inoculated with 1.5 x 10(5) T. cruzi. Control animals were given the same number of parasites. In both experimental groups no hemoflagellate could be seen in blood smears four weeks after infection. The comparison of the course of infection of T. cruzi in rats with and without H. muris was made using t- and Wilcoxon-Test for Pair Differences. Rats with H. muris infections showed a low development of T. cruzi up to the 16th day of infection with this flagellate (P less

Susceptibility of the reproductive tract of ICR adult female mice to Tyzzer's organisms was examined by intravenous and intravaginal inoculation at various stage of pregnancy. After intravenous inoculation, the uterus was most severely affected when inoculation was made at the midpregnancy. Severe involvement of the uterus was also seen after intravaginal inoculation made either at late-pregnancy or shortly before and after parturition. While non-pregnant female mice were less susceptible to intravenous or intravaginal inoculation, the growth of organisms in the uterine epithelium was recogniz
