Juan Valverde de Amusco (1525-1588): an eminent anatomist of the renaissance or a plagiarist of Vesalius? His work and its impact in renaissance anatomy.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study is to review and summarize the life and work of Juan Valverde de Amusco (1525-1588), his impact on the anatomy of the sixteenth century and focus on his controversy with Andreas Vesalius. METHODS: A thorough search of the literature was undertaken in PubMed and Google Scholar as well as in history books through the internet and in History and Medical University libraries. RESULTS: Valverde took almost directly from Andreas Vesalius 38 pictures. Occasionally, however, Valverde corrected Vesalius' images, as in his depictions of the muscles of the eyes,

What Each Clinical Anatomist Has to Know about Left Renal Vein Entrapment Syndrome (Nutcracker Syndrome): A Review of the Most Important Findings.

Nutcracker syndrome (NCS) is the most common term for compression of the left renal vein between the superior mesenteric artery and the abdominal aorta. The development of NCS is associated with the formation of the left renal vein (LRV) from the aortic collar during the sixth to eighth week of gestation and abnormal angulation of the superior mesenteric artery from the aorta. Collateralization of venous circulation is the most significant effect of NCS. It includes mainly the left gonadal vein and the communicating lumbar vein. Undiagnosed NCS may affect retroperitoneal surgery and other radi

"The heart is simply a muscle" and first description of the tetralogy of "Fallot". Early contributions to cardiac anatomy and pathology by bishop and anatomist Niels Stensen (1638-1686).

BACKGROUND: Many are familiar with the parotid duct and the Danish physician/anatomist's name associated with it. However, most are unaware of Niels Stensen's life and his significant contributions to the early study of the heart. For example, he found that the heart is simply muscle and was the first to describe what we now refer to as the tetralogy of Fallot. METHODS: A review of germane literature regarding this pioneer of cardiac anatomy was performed. CONCLUSIONS: This physician of the Medici court was clearly ahead of his time and found errors in the publications of such giants as Varo

Bodies and bureaucracy: The demise of the body snatchers in 19th century Britain.

As European anatomical teaching developed in the middle ages, anatomists found themselves balanced between the educational and judicial systems. Dissection was associated with the final stages of legal prosecutions and the supply of bodies was severely limited. Driven by increasing student demand for dissection, anatomists found themselves pushed to explore alternative routes for body supply. This led to association with the developing profession of grave robber, body snatchers, and even murderers. Keen to protect themselves from increasing vulnerability to legal prosecution, the eminent anato

Anatomizing the pulse: Edmund King's analogy, observation and conception of the tubular body.

In an unpublished anatomical treatise written around 1670, the English anatomist and fellow of the Royal Society of London Edmund King proposed that the human body was ultimately an assemblage of tubes and contained liquids. Without literally seeing every of its constituents to be tubular, how did King come to posit a tubular body? This article tackles the question by examining King's inquiry about the pulse against his framing of the circulatory system into a universally tubular model. Asking how King registered this model despite the limited visibility of vascularity in practice, I discuss t

Emil Zuckerkandl and his Dental Tubercle (Historical Note).

One of the eponyms most frequently cited in dental morphology texts, together with the Carabelli tubercle of the first permanent maxillary molars, is the Zuckerkandl tubercle of deciduous molars. However, references about Emil Zuckerkandl in the field of dental history and this particular entity are scarce. The reason this dental eponym was pushed "into the shadows" probably lies in the many other anatomical parts (including another tubercle, the pyramidal one of the thyroids), which took their names from this great anatomist.

Hemard's Libellus: A Controversy of Translation and Plagiarism in Renaissance Dental Medicine, as Confirmed by a Newly Discovered Copy of Eustachio's de Dentibus.

In 1563, the Italian anatomist Bartolomeo Eustachio published Libellus de Dentibus, the first book on dental anatomy. Subsequently, the surgeon Urbain Hemard authored Recherche de la Vraye Anathomie des Dents in 1582, the first book on dentistry in the French language. Hemard and Eustachio, two names integral in the biblio-historical development of dentistry, have been intertwined in a philological controversy ever since, with historians debating charges of plagiarism. Hemard's commentary on dental anatomy bears striking resemblance to Eustachio's, with the bulk of the text being an exact Fren

The anatomical variability of obturator vessels: Systematic review of literature.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically assess available information about all variations of obturator vessels and to present the most surgically relevant types, their prevalence and calibre in order to provide a comprehensive overview for both anatomists and clinicians. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 2689 studies were found via searching the online databases. After applying exclusion criteria 44 studies were assessed. The cadaveric studies, CT angiographies, and clinical studies were included. Number of hemipelves, prevalence of each variation and calibre of identified vessels were studied. Each var

Evolution of the paranasal sinuses' anatomy through the ages.

Previously, anatomists considered paranasal sinuses as a mysterious region of the human skull. Historically, paranasal sinuses were first identified by ancient Egyptians and later, by Greek physicians. After a long period of no remarkable improvement in the understanding of anatomy during the Middle Ages, anatomists of the Renaissance period-Leonardo da Vinci and Vesalius-made their own contribution. Nathaniel Highmore's name is also associated with the anatomy of paranasal sinuses as he was first to describe the maxillary sinus.

Labiaplasty: Mind the Gap-How the Female Genital Cosmetic Surgery Industry Has Exposed Gaps in Modern Medical Anatomy Education.

Anatomy is often considered to be a static discipline, but advances in radiological and surgical techniques regularly change structural viewpoints, and the modern anatomist teaches into an ever-changing socio-political context. This chapter focuses on specific challenges faced by the modern anatomist when teaching female genital anatomy in response to the increasing popularity of the female genital cosmetic surgery (FGCS) industry and the diversification of gender in contemporary society. A qualitative methodological approach was used to explore how female genital anatomy is represented in con

Emerging from emergency pandemic pedagogy: A survey of anatomical educators in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

It is critical that academic opinion of pandemic pedagogy is comprehensively quantified in order to inform future practices. Thus, this study examines how anatomists in the United Kingdom (UK) and Republic of Ireland (ROI) perceive the teaching adaptations made in response to COVID-19, and how these adaptations have impacted their experiences teaching, their online work environment and community. Data was collected via a questionnaire from 24 anatomists across 15 universities in the UK (11) and ROI (4). With regards to teaching, 95.6% of academics have upskilled in new technologies to meet the

Anatomy in dentistry: From the beginnings to contemporary reality.

The history of dentistry and medicine has a deep and ancient bond with the history of anatomy. From the ancient times to the present, the study of the human body represents the basis for research and clinical therapy. The historical contribution of anatomists to the development of dental medicine also helped in its characterization as an integrated but special and independent branch of medicine. From Galen's studies on animals to the discoveries of dental hard tissues characteristics using a microscope, this paper provides a brief literature review of how anatomy broadly contributed to the dev

A core musculoskeletal anatomy syllabus for undergraduate physical therapy student education.

Knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy is fundamental to physical therapy education. Although detailed anatomy syllabi have been developed for medical and other health professional students, none are available for training physical therapists. Therefore, the aim of this project was to produce a core musculoskeletal anatomy syllabus specific to physical therapy students, utilizing a modified Delphi approach. An international Delphi panel (n = 53) composed of anatomists and clinicians involved in physical therapy education considered a total of 2193 anatomical items arranged in four categories (mu

Developmental anatomy, angiography, and clinical implications of orbital arterial variations involving the stapedial artery.

Classical anatomists have provided detailed description of the arterial collateral pathways found in the head and neck. The small branches building this intricate network are difficult to access. The arterial map inherited from the anatomists has been put to the test with detailed high-resolution vascular imaging. Superselective angiography has helped rediscover the complexity of the craniocervical arterial network. The concept of dangerous collaterals or dangerous anastomoses was born with the advent of endovascular therapy. Although dangerous anastomoses of the skull base are described in th

Historical awareness of the brainstem: From a subsidiary structure to a vital center.

The historical trajectory of the discovery of the brainstem as a vital center has been rarely explored. Focusing on its tracts and neurons first, anatomists much later expanded their understanding of the brainstem with the discovery of groups of nuclear networks that affected major vital functions. Comparative anatomists (i.e., Edinger) postulated a primordial paleopallium that indirectly implied the centrality of the brainstem and a neopallidum with its differentiation and specialization up to Homo sapiens Methods that governed the discovery of the brainstem were (1) comparative anatomy, (2)

The women on Stieve's list: Victims of national socialism whose bodies were used for anatomical research.

Research on the history of anatomy in the Third Reich has often concentrated on the influence of the National Socialist (NS) regime on anatomists and their consequent unethical activities. Only recently, the focus has shifted to NS victims whose bodies were used for anatomical purposes. As a first approach to learning more about the victims, this study investigated the persons whose names Hermann Stieve, chairman of the Anatomical Department at the University of Berlin, had listed after using their bodies for his research. The study draws a group portrait and recounts selected biographies of t
