New insight into the enigmatic white cord in Rembrandt's The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp (1632).

The anatomic accuracy of Rembrandt's The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp (1632) has been debated in the literature for many years. The white cord that courses along the ulnar aspect of the carpus and small finger of the cadaver in Dr. Tulp's dissection conforms to no normal anatomic structure and is believed to represent an anomalous branch of the ulnar nerve, an artistic error, or a combination of both. After the discovery of an accessory abductor digiti minimi (AADM) during a routine dissection of a late-middle-aged male cadaver, we noted that the course of its tendon over the hypothenar

An atlas of the brain of the electric fish Apteronotus leptorhynchus.

This atlas consists of a set of six macrophotographs illustrating the important external landmarks of the apteronotid brain, as well as 54 transverse levels through the brain stained with cresyl violet. There are 150 microns between levels and the scales have 1 mm divisions (100 microns small divisions). In general the neuroanatomy of this brain is similar to that of other teleosts except that all parts known to be concerned with electroreception are greatly hypertrophied (electrosensory lateral line lobe, nucleus praeminentialis, caudal lobe of the cerebellum, torus semicircularis dorsalis, o

[Atlas of head anatomy in the neuro-ocular plane].

The "Atlas of cross-sectional orbito-cephalic anatomy in the neuro-ocular plane" does exist (now in press). The authors submit the main clinico-anatomical correlations observed. We will remind you that the "neuro-ocular plane" (N.O.P.) is defined as the C.T. plane of cephalic orientation comprising "both lenses, optic nerve heads and optic canals in the primary position of gaze". The more informative anatomical, radiological and anthropological data that could derive from the N.O.P. are stressed; first, we will evaluate the validity of our work and the problems we had while building the atlas;

A new electronic diary tool for mapping and tracking spatial and temporal head pain patterns in migraine.

AIM: We present an electronic tool for collecting data on the patterns of migraine headache onset and progression. METHODS: A digitized map consisting of 44 color-coded segments was defined based on previous reports of migraine pain and the distribution of nerves in the face, head and neck. The map was overlaid on a schematic map of the face, head and neck nerves. Thirty-six patients (N = 36, 28 female/eight male), who met ICDH-II criteria for episodic migraine and had headaches for at least three years, identified all regions where pain typically started and how pain spread and subsequently

The extent of man from Vitruvius to Marfan.

It is frequently stated that patients with Marfan's syndrome have an arm span greater than height. This implies a characteristic different from the proportions in normal adult man, in whom span and height are often thought to be equal. Such equality of span and height, which allows man to be portrayed within a square, has been a widely held concept, immortalised by Leonardo da Vinci, that dates from the Roman Vitruvius. However, in the past two hundred years, anthropometry has shown that span exceeds height in 59-78% of normal adult white men. Thus not only is the classic concept of equality o

A Comprehensive Atlas of the Adult Mouse Penis.

Mice are routinely used to study the development of the external genitalia and, in particular, the process of male urethral closure. This is because misplacement of the male penile urethra, or hypospadias, is amongst the most common birth defects reported in humans. While mice present a tractable model to study penile development, several structures differ between mice and humans, and there is a lack of consensus in the literature on their annotation and developmental origins. Defining the ontology of the mouse prepuce is especially important for the relevance and interpretation of mouse model

Regional growth and atlasing of the developing human brain.

Detailed morphometric analysis of the neonatal brain is required to characterise brain development and define neuroimaging biomarkers related to impaired brain growth. Accurate automatic segmentation of neonatal brain MRI is a prerequisite to analyse large datasets. We have previously presented an accurate and robust automatic segmentation technique for parcellating the neonatal brain into multiple cortical and subcortical regions. In this study, we further extend our segmentation method to detect cortical sulci and provide a detailed delineation of the cortical ribbon. These detailed segmenta

"Skinless wonders": Body Worlds and the Victorian freak show.

In 2002, Gunther von Hagens's display of plastinated corpses opened in London. Although the public was fascinated by Body Worlds, the media largely castigated the exhibition by dismissing it as a resuscitated Victorian freak show. By using the freak show analogy, the British press expressed their moral objection to this type of bodily display. But Body Worlds and nineteenth-century displays of human anomalies were linked in more complex and telling ways as both attempted to be simultaneously entertaining and educational. This essay argues that these forms of corporeal exhibitionism are both ex

Achille Louis Foville's atlas of brain anatomy and the Defoville syndrome.

Achille Louis Foville's atlas of brain anatomy (1844) is one of the most artistic and detailed works on neuroanatomy in the medical literature. The outstanding drawings by the 2 artists, Emile Beau and Frédéric-Michel Bion, highlight all the philosophy, ability, and sensibility of A.L. Foville in carefully dissecting the superficial and deep structures of the brain and spinal cord. Several plates show true brain fiber dissections of high artistic and academic value. As a result of an early misrecognition in the medical literature, "inferior Foville syndrome" has been wrongly attributed to Achi

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) and his depictions of the human spine.

INTRODUCTION: Few individuals in history have exerted so great an influence and made such extensive contributions to so many disciplines as Leonardo da Vinci. Da Vinci's inquisitive, experimental mentality led him to many discoveries, such as spinal cord function and the proper anatomy of several organ systems. Respected not only as an artist but also as an anatomist, he made many significant contributions to the field. CONCLUSIONS: This article explores da Vinci's drawings, in relation to the anatomy of the human spine.

Fossa navicularis magna.

A notchlike bone defect in the basiocciput due to a prominent fossa navicularis was incidentally discovered in a patient referred for radiologic evaluation of sinusitis. MR images showed that the osseous defect was filled with lymphoid tissue of the pharyngeal tonsil. The occurrence of this anatomic variant is discussed, with reference to ancient anatomic works.

Occipital condyle fractures.

OBJECTIVE: Occipital condyle fractures (OCFs) are infrequently recognized. Three recent cases of OCF in our center prompted a review of the incidence, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of this entity. METHODS: A retrospective review of medical records and radiographic results was performed for 93 of 316 consecutive patients who were victims of trauma, who presented at the Toronto Hospital during a 13-month period, and who had undergone computed tomography of the occiput. RESULTS: A review of the literature regarding OCF revealed that cranial nerve deficits occurred in 31% of th

The Representation of Foot and Leg Healing in Art: A Historical Iconographic Perspective from the Sixth Century Onward.

This historical review aims not only to identify and analyse artistic depictions of miraculous healings of various injuries and orthopaedic pathologies affecting the foot and leg over the centuries, but also to explore the stories of the saints portrayed and the exceptional artists who brought these miracles to life through their masterpieces. By examining historical and artistic sources, this study traces the evolution of healing iconography from the earliest descriptions in the sixth century, through the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. Special attention is given to the increasing anatomical

Evolution of Human Brain Atlases in Terms of Content, Applications, Functionality, and Availability.

Human brain atlases have been evolving tremendously, propelled recently by brain big projects, and driven by sophisticated imaging techniques, advanced brain mapping methods, vast data, analytical strategies, and powerful computing. We overview here this evolution in four categories: content, applications, functionality, and availability, in contrast to other works limited mostly to content. Four atlas generations are distinguished: early cortical maps, print stereotactic atlases, early digital atlases, and advanced brain atlas platforms, and 5 avenues in electronic atlases spanning the last t
