Comparative anatomy and systematic implications of the turbinal skeleton in Lagomorpha (Mammalia).

In order to elucidate the systematic relevance of the turbinal skeleton in Lagomorpha the ethmoidal regions of 6 ochotonid, 21 leporid, and 2 outgroup species (Sciurus vulgaris, Tupaia sp.) species were investigated by high-resolution computed tomography (μCT). Number and shape of turbinals correspond to major clades and to several genera. All Lagomorpha under study have a deeply excavated nasoturbinal that is continuous with the lamina semicircularis; a feature likely to be an autapomorphy of lagomorphs. In particular, the olfactory turbinals (frontoturbinals, ethmoturbinals, and interturbina

Guidelines for designing and implementing game-based learning in comparative anatomy education.

Game-based learning (GBL) is increasingly used in health professions anatomy education to promote engagement, knowledge acquisition, collaboration, and application of knowledge. However, its application to comparative veterinary anatomy remains fragmented, with limited guidance on how games can be systematically designed around the specific demands of learning anatomy across different species and body systems. This article proposes a context-specific framework for the design and implementation of GBL specifically in comparative anatomy education, integrating principles of serious game design,

Comparative anatomy of the spinneret musculature in cribellate and ecribellate spiders (Araneae).

Silk production is a prominent characteristic of spiders. The silk is extruded through spigots located on the spinnerets, which are single- to multimembered paired appendages at the end of the abdomen. Most extant spiders have three pairs of spinnerets, and in between either a cribellum (spinning plate) or a colulus (defunct vestigial organ), dividing these spiders into cribellate and ecribellate species. Previous research has shown that cribellate and ecribellate spiders differ not only in the composition of their spinning apparatus but also in the movements of their spinnerets during silk sp

Comparative investigations of anatomy and physiology in mammalian noses (Homo sapiens--Artiodactyla).

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Hyperglycaemia leads to increased oxidative stress resulting in endothelial dysfunction. ACE inhibitors, antioxidants and HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) have been shown to improve endothelial function. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of NCB-02 (a standardized preparation of curcuminoids), atorvastatin and placebo on endothelial function and its biomarkers in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS: A total of 72 patients with type 2 diabetes were randomized to receive NCB-02 (two capsules containing curcumin 150 mg twice daily), atorv

An anatomic study of inferior glenohumeral recess portals: comparative anatomy at risk.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe the musculotendinous relations and neurologic structures at risk during establishment of posterior portals for access to the inferior glenohumeral recess (IGHR). METHODS: Three 18-gauge spinal needles were used to establish 2 posteroinferior portals and 1 axillary pouch portal in 14 embalmed cadaveric shoulders, without joint distention and arthroscopic visualization. At dissection, musculotendinous structures traversed by the needles were recorded, and distances from the (1) axillary nerve (at the deltoid undersurface, quadrangular space, an

Brachial Plexus Anatomy of Sprague Dawley Rat Compared to Human.

Brachial plexus injury (BPI) occurs when the brachial plexus (BP) is compressed, stretched, or avulsed. A mild BPI results in acute arm pain, tingling, or numbness, while more severe injuries can lead to permanent muscle weakness or loss of function of the extremity if left untreated. Many BPI treatments developed in small animal models fail to translate effectively to human clinical trials. Furthermore, there is a lack of comparative studies exploring the anatomical differences between BPs in different species. The objective of this study is to compare the BP anatomy between humans and Spragu

Drainage of the maxillary sinus: a comparative anatomy study in humans and goats.

OBJECTIVE: The maxillary sinuses are the most frequently infected paranasal sinuses in humans. It has been suggested that infection occurs relatively commonly in the maxillary sinuses owing to the position of their ostia high on their superomedial walls, which may be suboptimal for natural drainage. This may represent evolutionary lag, whereby the ostia remained in a quadrupedal position as bipedal humans evolved from their primate ancestors. This study examined the hypothesis that drainage of the maxillary sinus is optimal in the quadrupedal position. DESIGN: The drainage of the human maxill

Comparative anatomy of the arterial system of the foot in primates. 1. Macaque.

Using stereoscopic angiography, the entire arterial system of the foot of the macaque was analyzed. The arteria saphena, instead of the a. tibialis anterior, reaches the dorsum of the foot, and its branches supply most of the foot. The dorsal arteries are dominant as far as the metatarsal spaces of the lateral four toes. The a. metatarsea dorsalis II showed a tendency to be the single dominant artery and to give rise to even the a. digitalis communis plantaris IV through the catella plantaris distalis. This tendency was observed more clearly in other macaques species than the Japanese monkey.

Painting or tattooing? A comparative study of body painting and temporary tattoos for learning surface anatomy in an intensive undergraduate anatomy course.

Body painting (BP) is a well-established active learning strategy in anatomy education that promotes engagement and spatial understanding of surface anatomy. However, it is time-intensive and may disadvantage students with limited artistic confidence. Temporary tattoos (TT) may offer a faster, standardized alternative. An intensive undergraduate anatomy course included four weekly surface anatomy sessions (face/neck, arm/forearm, hand, leg). Participants were randomly assigned to BP or TT for each session and participated in both modalities twice. Quiz scores and time-on-task were recorded aft

Quantitative preoperative craniovertebral junction anatomy in Chiari I malformation: a comparative MRI study.

BACKGROUND: Chiari I malformation (CM-I) is characterized by caudal displacement of the cerebellar tonsils through the foramen magnum. Craniovertebral junction (CVJ) anatomical variations may contribute to disease pathophysiology. This study is the first of a six-article institutional series investigating the anatomical substrate, surgical outcomes, and complications of CM-I. OBJECTIVE: To quantitatively compare CVJ measurements between CM-I patients and healthy controls, and establish the morphometric baseline of a consecutive surgical cohort. METHODS: A retrospective MRI-based study includ

The Stylohyoid Complex: An Update on Its Embryology, Comparative Anatomy and Human Variations.

The stylohyoid complex (SHC), comprising the styloid process (SP), stylohyoid ligament, and lesser horn of the hyoid bone, arises from Reichert's cartilage and plays a central role in head and neck organization. Although anatomically small, it occupies a strategic position in the parapharyngeal space, linking neural, vascular, and visceral compartments. This review integrates embryological, comparative, anatomical, and clinical perspectives to provide an updated synthesis of SHC morphology and significance. Developmental studies highlight the early segmentation of Reichert's cartilage, its tra

Mapping of lymphosomes in the canine forelimb: comparative anatomy between canines and humans.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer-related lymphedema is an unsolved iatrogenic dilemma. Disfigurement of the affected limb because of increased volume and recurrent cellulitis can cause both physical and mental distress for many breast cancer survivors. No adequate animal models have been developed to investigate acquired lymphedema mimicking breast cancer-related lymphedema, and there is little knowledge of the anatomy of the lymphatics in animals. The authors hypothesized that a canine forelimb model of the lymphatic system could potentially be used to study breast cancer-related lymphedema. METHOD

Why does man have a quadratus plantae? A review of its comparative anatomy.

Quadratus plantae is a muscle in the sole of the foot, typically originating from the calcaneus and inserting into the posterolateral surface of the tendons of flexor digitorum longus. It is implicated in heel pain, claw toe deformity and diabetic polyneuropathy. Phylogenetic considerations suggest that quadratus plantae is getting bulkier, implying its significance in human locomotion. Is it simply an accessory flexor that brings the line of pull of flexor digitorum longus in line with the long axis of the foot, as its name would suggest? We cite evidence from electromyographic studies that s

Descriptive, comparative, and functional anatomy of the facial musculature in cattle (Bos taurus).

Facial expressions can provide insight into animal emotions and pain, but no standardized system for assessing the entire facial display in cattle (Bos taurus Linnaeus) exists. The Facial Action Coding System (FACS), originally developed for humans, identifies distinct facial movements based on mimetic muscles. Developing a cattle-specific FACS requires mapping and comparing cattle mimetic musculature with that of humans and related species, which was the aim of this study. Dissection of three heads-using skinning and facial mask preparation on opposite sides-identified 30 mimetic muscles and

Comparative Anatomy of the Coracobrachialis Muscle: Insights into Human Typical and Variant Morphology.

The coracobrachialis muscle (CB) is a phylogenetically conserved component of the anterior compartment of the upper limb, offering critical insights into evolutionary anatomy, developmental biology, and human morphological variation. This mini review synthesizes findings from comparative anatomical studies, embryological data, cadaveric dissections, and clinical reports to explore the CB's morphology, ontogeny, and medical relevance. Among tetrapods, the CB consistently originates from the coracoid process and inserts into the humerus, with interspecies morphological adaptations reflecting spe

Comparative microscopic anatomy of Schizomida - 2. The rostrosoma and the pharyngeal suction pump.

This paper tests hypotheses of independent parallel evolution of the rostrosoma among euchelicerate taxa by analyzing the microscopic anatomy and histology of the rostrosoma of Uropygi (Schizomida and Thelyphonida) and comparing it with the morphology of the snout region in other euchelicerates. The study employs analysis of multiple histological serial sections, μCT-imaging, and graphical as well as computer-based 3D reconstruction. Results of the study are that Thelyphonida and Schizomida share the same morphology of the rostrosoma. The rostrosoma of both groups contains a unique arrangement
