Subchondral bone abnormalities in the knee: imaging techniques, regional anatomy, and pathology.

The subchondral bone is an integral structural component of the knee with key roles in shock absorption and load distribution. Injuries to the subchondral bone, which may occur secondary to various etiologies including trauma, degenerative disease, or repetitive overuse, are commonly encountered in clinical practice. Radiographs are generally performed as an initial imaging test to identify any gross osseous abnormalities. However, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the modality of choice for the accurate evaluation and characterization of subchondral bone abnormalities, such as osseous contu

Does gender influence learning, perceptions and retention in regional anatomy dissection courses?

Medical educators should understand the differences within the medical student population, including gender. Research on gender effects on learning and skill acquisition has yielded contradictory results, particularly in anatomy learning among undergraduate medical students. While various dissection course settings have been evaluated, gender-specific differences have largely been overlooked. This study examined gender differences in several aspects of anatomy education. First, the ability of undergraduate medical students to identify anatomical structures was assessed to determine gender diff

[Anatomy of the acromioclavicular and coracoclavicular region. Functional and clinical aspects].

BACKGROUND: The acromioclavicular (AC) joint connects the acromion with the lateral end of the clavicle and constitutes an important load-transmitting element between the upper extremity and the skeleton of the trunk. AIM: This review discusses functional aspects that relate the AC and the coracoclavicular (CC) ligaments to AC joint instability and lateral clavicle fracture. RESULTS: In terms of stability the AC and CC ligaments play a pivotal role for this region. Under normal conditions the restraint system is balanced and becomes unbalanced in cases of injury such as AC joint instability

The thin sectional anatomy of the sellar region with MRI correlation.

The purpose of this study was to explore the anatomical complexity and adjacent relationships of the sellar region in thin continuous sections so as to provide intimate morphological data for imaging diagnosis and surgical operations of the diseases in this region. After CT and MR examination verifying no brain lesions, one normal cadaver head was selected for this study from four Chinese adult male cadavers. After being embedded and frozen, the head was sliced into serial sections at 0.1 mm intervals in the transverse plane with SKC 500 computerized freezing milling machine. Then the serial t

Applied anatomy of the temporal region and forehead for injectable fillers.

Injectable fillers allow for augmentation of soft tissue deficiencies caused by aging, trauma or other scarring. Placement of injectable fillers can be performed in the office, safely and with minimal patient downtime. In order to avoid complications from injection of filler substances, the injector must have a thorough knowledge of the applied anatomy. The temple and forehead are often associated with aging changes. This article describes the anatomic layers of the forehead and temple, and discusses the various planes for safe injection of fillers.

Implications of arterial anatomy in patients with cancer of the periampullary region.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Preoperative information on arterial anatomy in the peripancreatic and hepatic areas is valuable to any surgeon performing pancreatoduodenectomy. METHODOLOGY: Between 1994 and 1998, 49 patients with periampullary cancer (31 distal bile duct and 18 ampullary tumors) underwent visceral angiography and radical pancreatoduodenectomy with lymphadenectomy. Surgically "significant" arterial variations and their effects on operative management and results were examined retrospectively. RESULTS: Arterial variations were found in 18 patients (37%); 15 (31%) were "significant" and 3 (6

[Surgical Anatomy of the Cavernous Sinus, Parasellar Region, and Orbit].

The cavernous sinus, para-sellar region, and orbit have intricately intertwined cranial nerves, blood vessels, and dura mater. In surgery, anatomical understanding is very important. Recognizing the location(depth)of the cranial nerves running on the lateral and upper wall of the cavernous sinus is vital and is directly linked to postoperative complications. In addition, understanding the dural ring in the clinoid segment of the internal carotid artery is important. The periosteum on the upper surface of the anterior clinoid is the distal dural ring of the internal carotid artery, and the peri

Variability of the capsular anatomy in the rotator interval region of the shoulder.

PURPOSE: Anterior shoulder anatomy is as complex and variable as its descriptive terminology. A detailed understanding of normal anatomic variability is critical to accurate performance, description, and evaluation of the procedures involving the rotator interval. We aimed to define, arthroscopically, the anatomic variability in the rotator interval region of the shoulder and to compare these results to the findings of previous cadaveric studies. METHODS: The rotator interval anatomy of 104 consecutive patients was classified according to the system of DePalma. Anatomic variability was evalua

Cone beam tomographic imaging anatomy of the maxillofacial region.

Multiplanar imaging is a fairly new concept in diagnostic imaging available with a number of contemporary imaging modalities such as CT, MR imaging, diagnostic ultrasound, and others. This modality allows reconstruction of images in different planes (flat or curved) from a volume of data that was acquired previously. This concept makes the diagnostic process more interactive, and proper use may increase diagnostic potential. At the same time, the complexity of the anatomical structures on the maxillofacial region may make it harder for these images to be interpreted. This article reviews the a

Anatomy of the supraorbital region and the evaluation of it for the reconstruction of facial defects.

Damaged supraorbital neurovascular bundle during anterior orbital approach, fronto-glabellar reconstruction flap, supraorbital injection, blepharospasm, and Graves disease surgery is an important complication reported with varying frequency. The origin, calibration, and branches of the supraorbital artery and its topographical relations were investigated by injection of the arterial bed with red-dyed latex in 38 forehead regions. The supraorbital artery with the supratrochlear artery arose from the orbit as two separate vessels in 33 out of 38 forehead sides (87%). The supraorbital artery ente

Anatomy of the obturator region: relations to a trans-obturator sling.

Our objective was to determine the relationships between a trans-obturator sling and anatomic structures within the obturator region. The obturator regions of six cadavers were dissected and distances from the mid-point of the ischiopubic ramus to the muscles, nerves, and vessels of the region were measured. A trans-obturator sling was placed and distances from the device to the same anatomic structures were determined. Four additional cadavers were dissected to determine the device route of passage. The obturator canal is on average 4.4 cm from the midpoint of the ischiopubic rami. The trans-
