Ancestral developmental potentials in early bony fish contributed to vertebrate water-to-land transition.

The water-to-land transition was a major step in vertebrate evolution and eventually gave rise to the tetrapods, including amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. The first land invasion of our fish ancestors is considered to have occurred during the late Devonian period ~370 million years ago (Daeschler et al., 2006). Many fossils from important transitional species, such as Tiktaalik, Acanthostega, and Ichthyostega, have helped to identify key morphological and anatomical structures crucial to vertebrate terrestrial adaptation (Coates, 1996; Johanson & Ahlberg, 2001; Shubin et al., 2006).

Investigating mobility and pastoralism in Kerma-period communities upstream of the fourth cataract, Sudan.

OBJECTIVES: The Kingdom of Kush in today's northern Sudan and southern Egypt (ancient Nubia) is often depicted as a secondary state relative to ancient Egypt. More recent investigations have set aside Egyptocentric and western, colonialist perspectives of state development focused on control of land and agricultural surplus, examining Kushites through the lens of African-based models of mobile pastoralism in which power and authority were achieved through control of herds and alliance-building. Here, analyses of radiogenic strontium isotopes in human dental enamel are used to investigate diach

Early mesozoic coexistence of amniotes and hepadnaviridae.

Hepadnaviridae are double-stranded DNA viruses that infect some species of birds and mammals. This includes humans, where hepatitis B viruses (HBVs) are prevalent pathogens in considerable parts of the global population. Recently, endogenized sequences of HBVs (eHBVs) have been discovered in bird genomes where they constitute direct evidence for the coexistence of these viruses and their hosts from the late Mesozoic until present. Nevertheless, virtually nothing is known about the ancient host range of this virus family in other animals. Here we report the first eHBVs from crocodilian, snake,

Pleistocene mitogenomes reconstructed from the environmental DNA of permafrost sediments.

Traditionally, paleontologists have relied on the morphological features of bones and teeth to reconstruct the evolutionary relationships of extinct animals.1 In recent decades, the analysis of ancient DNA recovered from macrofossils has provided a powerful means to evaluate these hypotheses and develop novel phylogenetic models.2 Although a great deal of life history data can be extracted from bones, their scarcity and associated biases limit their information potential. The paleontological record of Beringia3-the unglaciated areas and former land bridge between northeast Eurasia and northwes

Desmethyl butenolides are optimal ligands for karrikin receptor proteins.

Strigolactones and karrikins are butenolide molecules that regulate plant growth. They are perceived by the α/β-hydrolase DWARF14 (D14) and its homologue KARRIKIN INSENSITIVE2 (KAI2), respectively. Plant-derived strigolactones have a butenolide ring with a methyl group that is essential for bioactivity. By contrast, karrikins are abiotic in origin, and the butenolide methyl group is nonessential. KAI2 is probably a receptor for an endogenous butenolide, but the identity of this compound remains unknown. Here we characterise the specificity of KAI2 towards differing butenolide ligands using gen

Conserved and divergent development of brainstem vestibular and auditory nuclei.

Vestibular function was established early in vertebrates and has remained, for the most part, unchanged. In contrast, each group of tetrapods underwent independent evolutionary processes to solve the problem of hearing on land, resulting in a remarkable mixture of conserved, divergent and convergent features that define extant auditory systems. The vestibuloacoustic nuclei of the hindbrain develop from a highly conserved ground plan and provide an ideal framework on which to address the participation of developmental processes to the evolution of neuronal circuits. We employed an electroporati

Transformation of the pectoral girdle in the evolutionary origin of frogs: insights from the primitive anuran Discoglossus.

Using cleared-and-stained whole mounts and computer-aided three-dimensional reconstructions made from serial histological sections, we studied the development of the pectoral girdle in Discoglossus pictus, an extant member of an ancient frog lineage, represented for example by Eodiscoglossus from the Middle Jurassic to Early Cretaceous periods in Europe. Basic developmental features were compared with those of extinct Temnospondyli, considered to be the most probable anuran ancestors, and with Triadobatrachus, an early Triassic proanuran. In the endochondral girdle, the separate scapula and co

Learning from history in the midst of the COVID-19: epidemics/pandemics of antiquity up to the fall of the Western Roman Empire.

When humans discovered agriculture and livestock, they ceased to be nomads and began to settle in towns until they created large cities. From the first human settlements in Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Anatolian Peninsula, populations were exposed and susceptible to new infectious agents, leading to epidemics and pandemics. Great civilizations emerged, such as Egypt, the land of Hatti, Israel, Greece, Carthage, and Rome, among others. Contact between different populations through wars or maritime trade is well documented and has been described as a source of epidemics throughout history. Epidem

Climate-driven collapse risk in Chilean Araucaria forests.

Coniferous forests are increasingly threatened by the synergistic effects of climate change and land-use transformation, yet temperate systems remain underrepresented in global ecosystem collapse-risk assessments. Here, we evaluate the collapse risk of Araucaria araucana ecosystems in Chile, an ancient and culturally significant conifer, using the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems framework. Our aim was to quantify historical, current, and future degradation across four distinct Araucaria ecosystems, integrating distributional and functional criteria. We combined national forest cadasters, ecologica

Gut microbiome-immune system interaction in reptiles.

Reptiles are ectothermic amniotes in a world dominated by endotherms. Reptiles originated more than 300 million years ago and they often dwell in polluted environments which may expose them to pathogenic micro-organisms, radiation and/or heavy metals. Reptiles also possess greater longevity and may live much longer than similar-sized land mammals, for example, turtles, tortoises, crocodiles and tuatara are long-lived reptiles living up to 100 years or more. Many recent studies have emphasized the pivotal role of the gut microbiome on its host; thus, we postulated that reptilian gut microbiome

The return to water in ancestral Xenopus was accompanied by a novel mechanism for producing and shaping vocal signals.

UNLABELLED: Listeners locate potential mates using species-specific vocal signals. As tetrapods transitioned from water to land, lungs replaced gills, allowing expiration to drive sound production. Some frogs then returned to water. Here we explore how air-driven sound production changed upon re-entry to preserve essential acoustic information on species identity in the secondarily aquatic frog genus Xenopus. We filmed movements of cartilage and muscles during evoked sound production in isolated larynges. Results refute the current theory for Xenopus vocalization, cavitation, and favor instead

Control of the African trypanosomiases with special reference to land use.

There is a need to reassess the role of the trypanosomiases, both human and animal, in African ecology and economy. Withdrawal of control services from the Congo basin was followed by a resurgence of infection from ancient foci, many of them thought to have been extinguished. Successful elimination of Glossina in savanna habitats has sometimes been followed by reinvasion causing massive epizootics. Elsewhere continued recession of the tsetse fly has been followed by cattle population growth which is periodically interrupted by catastrophic pasture famines.Efficiency of control rather than larg

Arsenic-sensing domain controls ACR3 transporter trafficking in Marchantia polymorpha.

Arsenic is a toxic, carcinogenic metalloid that threatens human health through contaminated water and food. Arsenite [As(III)] efflux mediated by ACR3 transporters is an ancient detoxification mechanism conserved across prokaryotes, fungi, algae, and non-angiosperm land plants, yet plant ACR3 proteins remain poorly characterized. Here, we show that MpACR3, the ACR3 ortholog from the model liverwort Marchantia polymorpha, contains an arsenic-responsive N-terminal domain that regulates intracellular trafficking. Under non-stress conditions, MpACR3 is detected in Golgi bodies as well as at the pl

Role of Novel Chlorella vulgaris SSAU8 in Improving the Soil Health Under Induced Drought Stress.

The severe climate change has caused a drastic water level disparity around the globe, which eventually has been one of the biggest problems of this era related to land degradation. This has caused the multidimensional impact on ecology, the environment, and their components. Algae, one of the ancient micro-engineers, are involved in the functioning of soil microcosm. Therefore, this study has utilized a novel alga, Chlorella vulgaris SSAU8 to observe the impact of low water potential induced by PEG-6000 (polyethylene glycol). The study has utilized the UV-Vis spectrophotometer to explore the

Using bibliometrics to analyze the state of art of pesticide use in vineyard agrosystems: a review.

The production of wine dates to ancient civilization and has heavily influenced different landscapes around the globe. Nowadays, wine is still an important sector in terms of land use and income source in many countries, more specifically in the European Mediterranean region. However, to control pests and regulate wine growth, the extensive use of pesticides is common. The effects and persistence of agrochemicals in the environment is well known and defined in scientific literature as well as the environmental and human health risks of these compounds. The purpose of this review was to do a st

Protective hypothermia: An old therapy with a new prospective.

UNLABELLED: Therapeutic hypothermia (protective hypothermia) has been known to have beneficial effects since ancient times but interest was renewed after two land mark publication a decade ago. The survival as well as quality of life of post cardiac arrest patients depends on neurological outcome. Mild induced hypothermia is recommended for improving the neurological status of these patients. All acute care physician, nurses and emergency medical services personals should be aware of this approach. We report a case of post cardiac arrest that displayed improved neurological status with mild th

The toxicology of mercury.

The major physical forms of mercury to which humans are exposed are mercury vapor, Hg0, and methylmercury compounds, Ch3HgX. Mercury vapor emitted from both natural and anthropogenic sources is globally distributed in the atmosphere. It is returned as a water-soluble form in precipitation and finds its way into bodies of fresh and ocean water. Land run-off also accounts for further input into lakes and oceans. Inorganic mercury, present in water sediments, is subject to bacterial conversion to methylmercury compounds that are bioaccumulated in the aquatic food chain to reach the highest concen

Light-triggered ROS signaling regulates abaxial cuticle permeability in developing duckweed fronds.

The cuticle is an ancient innovation that enabled plants to colonize land by providing a protective yet selectively permeable barrier. Although its composition is well characterized, the developmental and environmental regulation of cuticle permeability remains unclear. Here, we used duckweed, a tiny aquatic plant that absorbs nutrients through a permeable abaxial frond surface, as a model to investigate the formation of water-permeable cuticles. During frond development, the abaxial surface gradually acquires permeability upon the emergence of the maternal pouch. Structural and biochemical an

Widespread horizontal gene transfer between plants and bacteria.

Plants host a large array of commensal bacteria that interact with the host. The growth of both bacteria and plants is often dependent on nutrients derived from the cognate partners, and the bacteria fine-tune host immunity against pathogens. This ancient interaction is common in all studied land plants and is critical for proper plant health and development. We hypothesized that the spatial vicinity and the long-term relationships between plants and their microbiota may promote cross-kingdom horizontal gene transfer (HGT), a phenomenon that is relatively rare in nature. To test this hypothesi

Repositioning of indigenous breeds in the pivot of climate crisis, food assurance, and biosecurity: genetic archive and evolutionary dynamics.

This study advocates for the strategic repositioning of local animal genetic resources, re-evaluating them not merely as remnants of cultural heritage but as critical biological archives essential for ensuring future food security. The contemporary livestock sector is navigating a precarious transition as global production systems encounter an ecosystem based bottleneck induced by decades of intensive monoculture. By contrasting the physiological and genetic characteristics of high yield industrial breeds with the inherent resilience of local genotypes, the research highlights a fundamental tr
