α-Thalassemia frequency and mutations in children with hypochromic microcytic anemias and relation with β-thalassemia, iron deficiency anemia.

The majority of the anemias during childhood are hypochromic and microcytic. The aim of the present study was to determine the status of α-thalassemia mutations and its association with other etiologies, such as iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and β-thalassemia trait, that are frequently seen hypochromic microcytic anemias in children. Children with hypochromic microcytic anemias were included in the study. Serum iron (SI), total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), ferritin levels, and hemoglobin electrophoresis with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method were analyzed. Reverse hybridizat

Spectrum of Hemoglobinopathies in Microcytic Hypochromic Anemia: A Cross-Sectional Study From Western India.

INTRODUCTION: Hemoglobinopathies are common genetic disorders with high prevalence in India. This study aimed to determine the spectrum of hemoglobinopathies among patients with microcytic hypochromic anemia at a tertiary care center in Jaipur, Western India. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled 150 patients with microcytic hypochromic anemia (mean corpuscular volume (MCV) <80 fL, mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) <27 pg) and clinically suspected hemoglobinopathy. Patients with a recent blood transfusion were excluded. Venous blood samples were analyzed using complete blood count and

Molecular spectrum of alpha-thalassemia mutations in microcytic hypochromic anemia patients from Saudi Arabia.

AIM: To describe the molecular spectrum of alpha-thalassemia molecular defects in a population sample of Saudi Arabian patients from the eastern province. METHODS: DNA was extracted from 41 patients suffering from microcytic, hypochromic anemia. We screened the alpha-globin gene for deletional and nondeletional mutations. RESULTS: Besides the common Rightward alpha(-3.7) (64%), polyA mutation (AATAAA to AATAAG) was found (41%). The risk of developing hemoglobin H (HBH) disease in case of homozygous polyA inheritance highlights the importance of detecting such mutation. CONCLUSION: The high

Dehydrated Hereditary Stomatocytosis (DHS): A Rare Inherited Hemolytic Disorder With Unusual Hypochromic Microcytic Anemia.

Dehydrated hereditary stomatocytosis (DHS) is an autosomal dominant (AD), non-immune hemolytic disorder due to increased erythrocyte membrane cation permeability that leads to red blood cell (RBC) dehydration and lysis, which can present with a wide range of clinical findings. DHS can be present with silent-to-mild normocytic or macrocytic anemia, increased risk of thrombotic complications, or partially compensated hemolysis with few symptoms. Senicapoc has been used recently to treat DHS as it showed activity against RBC dehydration in vitro; however, its clinical outcome is not established.

Differential diagnosis of microcytic hypochromic anemia in dogs: the role of hepcidin and reticulocyte hemoglobin indices.

Microcytic hypochromic anemia in dogs represents a persistent diagnostic challenge, particularly when differentiating between absolute iron deficiency and inflammation-driven functional iron restriction. Conventional biomarkers, including serum iron and ferritin, present important limitations in terms of sensitivity, specificity, and temporal resolution, restricting their ability to accurately reflect dynamic changes in iron metabolism. This review critically evaluates the diagnostic performance and clinical relevance of hepcidin and reticulocyte hemoglobin indices (CHr/RET-He) as advanced bio

Hypochromic red cells as predictors of anemia in patients undergoing hemodialysis: an observational retrospective study.

The percentage of hypochromic red blood cells (%HRC) estimates the availability of iron by evaluating the degree of hemoglobinization. We investigated whether %HRC was a predictor of anemia in patients undergoing hemodialysis. We recruited 142 patients undergoing routine hemodialysis between 2017 and 2019. Delta hemoglobin level (ΔHb)1mo-baseline was calculated as the difference between the hemoglobin level at 1 month after study enrollment and that at the time of study enrollment. Development of anemia was defined as hemoglobin level ≤ 15% of baseline. The median %HRC was 3.1%. There was a si

Gastric and Rectal Metastases from Malignant Melanoma Presenting with Hypochromic Anemia and Treated with Immunotherapy.

The authors present a case of an 80-year-old Caucasian male with multiple gastric and rectal metastases from malignant melanoma presenting with hypochromic anemia as the sole symptom of disease without evidence of cutaneous and ocular tumor localization. The patient had a medical history positive for malignant lentigo melanoma of the occipital region of the scalp and early stage laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and prostatic carcinoma treated with radiation therapy. The authors make some considerations on intestinal involvement by metastatic melanoma and discuss the choice of not treating wit

A diagnostic pitfall in iron-refractory microcytic hypochromic anemia with acquired ring sideroblasts initially treated as iron deficiency anemia-a case report.

Microcytic hypochromic anemia is commonly presumed to represent iron deficiency anemia (IDA) at initial presentation. However, failure to respond to iron supplementation and iron indices inconsistent with IDA should prompt early diagnostic reassessment. We report a 67-year-old woman with severe microcytic hypochromic anemia after ineffective iron therapy. Iron studies indicated iron loading with impaired iron utilization rather than iron deficiency. Bone marrow Perls staining revealed ring sideroblasts in 14% of erythroblasts. Further stratified evaluation supported an acquired ring sideroblas

Multiple organ toxicity, including hypochromic anemia, following repeated dose oral administration of phenobarbital (PB) in rats.

A 4-week repeated dose oral toxicity study of phenobarbital (PB) sodium was conducted in F344 rats of both sexes at PB doses of 0.8, 8, and 80 mg/kg/day to fully elucidate its general toxicity including hematological changes. Both sexes in the 80 mg/kg/day group showed staggering gait, lacrimation, and/or sedation, which were more evident in the early stage of treatment. The body weight gain and food consumption were greater in these animals than in controls. Hematology revealed a significant reduction in the hematocrit (Ht), hemoglobin concentration (Hb), and erythrocyte count (RBC) in both s

TT@MHA: A machine learning-based webpage tool for discriminating thalassemia trait from microcytic hypochromic anemia patients.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and thalassemia trait (TT) are the most common causes of microcytic hypochromic anemia (MHA) and are endemic in lower resource settings and rural areas with poor medical infrastructure. Accurate discrimination between IDA and TT is an essential issue for MHA patients. Although various discriminant formulas have been reported, distinguishing between IDA and TT is still a challenging problem due to the diversity of anemic populations. METHODS: We retrospectively collected laboratory data from 798 MHA patients. High proportions of α-TT (43.33 %) and TT co

Screening for β-Thalassemia Trait in Pregnant Women With Microcytic Hypochromic Anemia and Its Impact on Pregnancy Outcomes.

Background Thalassemia is a common autosomal recessive hemoglobinopathy and a major public health concern in India. In pregnancy, β-thalassemia trait often presents as microcytic hypochromic anemia and may mimic iron deficiency anemia, leading to misdiagnosis and inappropriate management. Early and accurate differentiation is essential to prevent unnecessary iron therapy and reduce adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. The study was designed to evaluate the prevalence, diagnostic differentiation, and pregnancy outcomes associated with β-thalassemia trait in this population. Methods This pros

Association Between Hypochromic Microcytic Anemia in Pregnancy and Cord Blood Levels of Cadmium, Lead, Manganese, Mercury, and Selenium.

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) has been associated with increased blood lead (BPb). Increased BPb in pregnancy has been associated with increased cord BPb. The association between IDA in pregnancy and cord PB levels has not been previously investigated. It is thus hypothesized that IDA in pregnancy results in increased cord BPb levels. Prospectively, cord blood, from term infants delivered in Memphis, TN, was tested for lead, manganese, mercury, and selenium. Maternal charts were retrospectively reviewed and subjects enrolled into two groups: IDA group with hemoglobin < 9 g/dL, 65 fl < MCV 75 fl

Appropriateness of β-thalassemia trait screening in patients with hypochromic microcytic anemia and predictors of potentially low-yield testing.

Β-thalassemia trait (β-TT) is a common hemoglobin disorder that is frequently confused with iron deficiency anemia (IDA), leading potentially low-yield confirmatory hemoglobin fraction analysis and increased use of healthcare resources. To assess the appropriateness of β-TT screening in patients with microcytic hypochromic anemia and to detect laboratory and clinical predictors of potentially low yield testing. A total of 12,622 patients with microcytic hypochromic anemia who underwent hemoglobin fraction analysis by HPLC between February 2023 to July 2025 were included in this retrospective c

Regulatory Mutation Study in Cases with Unsolved Hypochromic Microcytic Anemia and α-Major Regulatory Element Haplotype Analysis in Iran.

α-Thalassemia (α-thal) is an inherited blood disorder with different clinical manifestations. Although genetic causes of anemia are identified routinely in the majority of α-thal cases, a pathogenic variant in a few cases remains undiagnosed. In this study, some reported regulatory mutations have been investigated in five unsolved α-thal carriers. α-Major regulatory element (α-MRE) haplotype analysis has also been performed in Iran for the first time. Four regions, including the HBA2 core promoter, the highly conserved sequence of hypersensitive-40 (HS-40), a region containing regulatory singl
