OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate neonatal outcome of monochorionic twin pregnancies complicated by twin anemia-polycythemia sequence (TAPS).
STUDY DESIGN: A cohort of consecutive monochorionic twins with TAPS with double survivors was included in the study. Each twin pair with TAPS was compared with 2 monochorionic twin pairs who were unaffected by TAPS or twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome and who were matched for gestational age at birth. Neonatal death, severe morbidity, and cerebral injury were studied.
RESULTS: We included 19 twin pairs in the TAPS group and 38 contro

BACKGROUND: Maternal prenatal psychosocial stress and iron deficiency are both common, and each may affect fetal iron stores and subsequent offspring neurodevelopment. The extent to which psychosocial stress affects maternal iron status and maternal-fetal iron regulation is not known.
OBJECTIVES: To assess 1) associations of prenatal stress and mental health with maternal anemia and neonatal hemoglobin (Hb), and 2) the extent to which prenatal stressors modify maternal anemia-neonatal Hb associations.
METHODS: Observational data from participants enrolled in a randomized prenatal care trial

BACKGROUND: Anemia is a common medical condition in preterm infants. Previous studies show that neurodevelopmental outcomes of preterm infants are dependent in part on the degree of anemia. In a developmentally appropriately-timed neonatal mouse model, phlebotomy induced anemia (PIA) of the degree commonly seen in hospitalized preterm infants results in brain iron deficiency and hypoxia and significant short-term and long-term brain dysfunction, especially in the hippocampus. Iron and oxygen are critical for mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation-mediated ATP production and thus energetically

Anemia is a frequent diagnosis in critically ill infants, but the clinical implications of severe anemia in these patients remain unclear. In this study, we examined preweaned mice to investigate the effects of severe anemia during early infancy on gut mucosal permeability. C57BL/6 mice were subjected to timed phlebotomy between postnatal days (P) 2-10 to induce severe anemia (hematocrits 20%-24%), and intestinal permeability was tracked longitudinally between P10 and P20 as intestine-to-plasma translocation of enteral macromolecules and bacterial translocation. Epithelial junctions were evalu

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of maternal iron deficiency anemia (IDA) on fetal thrombopoiesis.
METHODS: In this prospective observational study, maternal and cord blood iron status parameters (serum iron, serum ferritin, total iron-binding capacity, and transferrin saturation), and platelet indices, such as, absolute platelet count (APC), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW) and plateletcrit, were estimated in a convenient sample of 142 mothers with IDA (hemoglobin <11 g/dl and serum ferritin <12 ng/ml) and an equal number of healthy non-anemic (hemoglobin ≥11 g/

A newborn infant with massive fetomaternal hemorrhage is reported. The fetal blood loss led to severe late decelerations in the antepartal CTG. The newborn showed a marked anemia (Hb 4.9 g%!) and a rapidly progressive heart failure. Despite blood transfusions and digoxin therapy the infant developed the symptoms of a "persistent fetal circulation". This mechanism may have been responsible for the lethal outcome in other reported cases. A successful therapeutic approach adaptable to the different stages of severity of this dangerous perinatal condition is outlined.

Fetomaternal hemorrhage (FMH) is a perplexing obstetric condition that predominantly occurs during the third trimester or at the time of delivery. Its insidious and non-specific onset often leads to diagnostic challenges. The underlying pathophysiology of FMH remains incompletely understood, though it is primarily attributed to compromise of the placental barrier. The severity of the condition is intrinsically associated with the volumn of blood loss, the hemorrhage rate, and the presence of alloimmunity. Upon the occurrence of severe FMH, it can rapidly lead to intrauterine distress, fetal an

BACKGROUND: Congenital erythropoietic porphyria is a rare autosomal recessive disorder that affects heme-porphyrin synthesis. This disorder is due to the genetic defect of uroporphyrinogen III cosynthase. This defect results in the accumulation of high amounts of uroporphyrin I in all tissues, leading to clinical manifestations ranging from mild to severe chronic damage of the skin, cartilage and bone. Hypertrichosis, erythrodontia and reddish-colored urine are often present, as well as hemolytic anemia accompanied by hepatosplenomegaly.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we present a case of a 5-year-

Anemia in pregnancy affects 30 to 40% of women globally, with iron deficiency (ID) accounting for half of the cases. In the United States, iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) prevalence during pregnancy is approximately 5%. ID and IDA negatively affect the maternal-fetal dyad. Reticulocyte hemoglobin equivalent (RET-He) estimates functional iron stores without additional blood sampling. Monitoring RET-He in pregnant women and neonates may facilitate earlier interventions with iron supplementation. The aim is to evaluate RET-He's utility in identifying pregnant women and neonates at risk for ID and ID

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of second trimester anemia on maternal and perinatal outcomes in twin pregnancies.
METHODS: A retrospective population-based study was conducted, comparing maternal and neonatal outcomes in women carrying twins, with second trimester anemia (defined as hemoglobin < 10 g/dl) to those without anemia (defined as hemoglobin > or equal to 10 g/dl). Deliveries occurred in a tertiary medical center in 2013.
RESULTS: During the study period, there were 307 twin deliveries. Hemoglobin levels were available for 247 (80.4%) twins; 66 (

Intrauterine intestinal obstruction complicated by midgut volvulus is a serious life-threatening diagnosis. Immediate surgical intervention is generally the course of action upon diagnosis to prevent morbidity and mortality. We report a case of intrauterine intestinal obstruction where the neonate then presented with an unusual onset of volvulus within the first 12 hours of life. The patient was born with generalized edema, a distended abdomen, and pallor. Unlike many cases, the patient did not present with typical signs of volvulus. Diagnostic imaging preceding delivery and the stable postnat

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the outcomes of anemia in pregnancy is critical. Since no study has been conducted regarding the maternal and neonatal outcomes of iron-deficiency anemia in Hormozgan province of Iran, this study aims to assess the maternal and neonatal outcomes of iron-deficiency anemia in women who gave birth in Hormozgan province from January 2020 to January 2022.
METHODS: We retrospectively assessed all singleton pregnant women who gave birth at a tertiary hospital in Bandar Abbas, Hormozgan province, Iran, for two years. We divided all women into iron-deficiency anemic and non

BACKGROUND: Extremely low birth-weight (ELBW) preterm infants remain at high risk for mortality and major morbidities, and nearly all need packed red blood cell transfusions within their first weeks of life. The overall objective of this study was to assess the association between anemia at admission to neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with the neonatal morbidity and mortality in ELBW infants.
METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted on 106 patients with ELBW admitted at our level III NICU from January 2006 to December 2015. The subjects were divided into two groups: (1) patients wi

UNLABELLED: Infantile pyknocytosis (IP) is a rare hematological entity of newborns. It is a form of hemolytic anemia with unusual red cell morphology: the red blood cells are distorted, irregular, and small with many projections. Spontaneous resolution usually occurs by 4-6months of age.
OBSERVATION: We describe the clinical features and biological parameters of 5 cases of IP. The first symptoms were always early jaundice, which required phototherapy. Anemia was severe in all babies and red blood cell transfusion was needed.
CONCLUSION: IP is a rare cause of neonatal anemia whose diagnosis i

Background: Pyruvate kinase deficiency (PKD) is the most prevalent enzymatic defect of the glycolytic pathway, causing chronic congenital non-spherocytic hemolytic anemia. Clinical severity ranges from mild anemia to transfusion-dependent diseases. Severe neonatal presentations, including liver failure, have rarely been reported. Case presentation: We report a preterm female neonate with PKD who developed early-onset hemolytic anemia, conjugated hyperbilirubinemia, hepatosplenomegaly, coagulopathy, and progressive transaminitis. Imaging demonstrated hepatomegaly with diffuse parenchymal involv

Infantile pyknocytosis (IP) is a rare, probably misestimated, cause of non-immune neonatal hemolytic anemia evolving in two phases: an initial phase with severe jaundice, followed by a second phase with hemolytic anemia, which may require neonatal intensive care. The diagnosis of IP is based on the transient presence on blood smear of hyperdense, contracted, and/or spiculated red blood cells (pyknocytes), associated with the spontaneous resolution of clinico-biological features and the exclusion of other causes. If the etiology remains undetermined, some contributing factors, such as oxidative

A few years ago recombinant human erythropoietin (rh-EPO) has been introduced for the prophylaxis of anaemia of prematurity. Aim of this controlled study was a cost-effectiveness analysis of the prophylaxis with rh-EPO versus sole transfusion with packed red blood cells. In the study group 33 infants (gestational age 30 +/- 2 weeks, birthweight 1217 g +/- 244 g) were treated with rh-EPO beginning on the fifth day of life for a six week period. They received 750 IE rh-EPO/kg/week and transfusion with packed red blood cells when indicated. In the historic control group 33 infants (gestational ag
