Anger and acute coronary events.

A high level of anger has a powerful effect on the incidence of preventable cardiovascular death. Persuasive clinical evidence indicates that anger evokes physiological responses that are potentially life-threatening in the setting of CAD. Finally, emotional stress, anger, or worry have a dominant influence on the severity, frequency, and treatment of angina. The natural history of angina is characterized by episodic variations in the frequency and severity of symptoms coincident with periods of emotional stress. When angina is associated with periods of emotional stress or anger, the angina i

Rape: power, anger, and sexuality.

Accounts from both offenders and victims of what occurs during a rape suggest that issues of power, anger, and sexuality are important in understanding the rapist's behavior. All three issues seem to operate in every rape, but the proportion varies and one issue seems to dominate in each instance. The authors ranked accounts from 133 offenders and 92 victims for the dominant issue and found that the offenses could be categorized as power rape (sexuality used primarily to express power) or anger rape (use of sexuality to express anger). There were no rapes in which sex was the dominant issue; s

Anger and Dementia Caregiving: A Systematic Review of the Effects of Anger and Hostility on Caregivers' Physical Health.

BACKGROUND: Anger is commonly experienced by family caregivers of people living with dementia yet its effect on caregivers' physical health remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this study was to systematically review current evidence on the effects of anger and hostility on caregivers' physical health. METHODS: We searched Medline, EMBASE, PubMed, and PsycINFO up to January 2022. Two review authors independently extracted data on study characteristics, study quality, and effect sizes of associations of anger and hostility with caregiver health outcomes. RESULTS: We found eight stu

The therapeutic release of anger: Helen Watkins's silent abreaction and subsequent elaborations of the anger rock.

This paper summarizes Helen Watkins's (1980) silent abreaction technique for releasing anger and the subsequent elaborations it has inspired. Discussion of Watkins's seminal article incorporates her verbatim account of the technique, 2 clinical applications, and her encouragement of further adaptations. Other scholars' subsequent contributions include an adaptation for dissociative identity disorder, brief treatment of constant pain syndrome, and inpatient treatment of a suicidally depressed, dissociative survivor of sexual abuse. Commonalities and distinctions among Watkins's work and these m

The relation between anger coping strategies, anger mood and somatic complaints in children and adolescents.

Attempts to explain the experience of somatic complaints among children and adolescents suggest that they may in part result from the influence of particular strategies for coping with anger on the longevity of negative emotions. To explore these relationships British (n = 393) and Dutch (n = 299) children completed a modified version of the Behavioral Anger Response Questionnaire (BARQ), and two additional questionnaires assessing anger mood and somatic complaints. A hierarchical regression analysis showed that for both the UK and Dutch samples two coping styles, Social support-seeking and Ru

Does quick to blame mean quick to anger? The role of agreeableness in dissociating blame and anger.

Two studies investigated agreeableness, the accessibility of blame, and their potential interactive effects on anger. To measure the chronic accessibility of blame, a choice reaction time task was created that required participants to classify words as blameworthy or not. It was found that for individuals low in agreeableness, blame accessibility was positively related to anger and arguments during the course of daily life, hostile feelings during the course of a semester, and anger in response to a short video involving a blameworthy action. This same straightforward relationship between the

Utility of the Dimensions of Anger Reactions-5 (DAR-5) scale as a brief anger measure.

BACKGROUND: Anger is a common emotional sequel in the aftermath of traumatic experience. As it is associated with significant distress and influences recovery, anger requires routine screening and assessment. Most validated measures of anger are too lengthy for inclusion in self-report batteries or as screening tools. This study examines the psychometric properties of a shortened 5-item version of the Dimensions of Anger Reactions (DAR), an existing screening tool. METHODS: Responses to the DAR-5 were analysed from a sample of 486 college students with and without a history of trauma exposure

Anger in social anxiety disorder.

The present study focused on the emotional experience of anger among individuals with and without social anxiety disorder (SAD). Eighty-eight participants took part in the study, half (n = 44) met diagnostic criteria for SAD and half (n = 44) did not meet criteria for SAD. Participants completed a 21-day experience sampling measurement (ESM) in which they reported on daily social interactions and emotions. Using multilevel linear modeling we found that individuals with SAD experienced more anger compared to individuals without SAD. We also found a Diagnosis × Social Context interaction such th

Anger attacks in eating disorders.

As central nervous system serotonergic dysregulation has been postulated to exist in both eating and aggression disorders, we hypothesized that anger attacks would be more common among patients with eating disorders than among control subjects. In addition, we wanted to examine possible relationships between the presence of anger attacks and the type or severity of the eating disorder. Subjects were 39 normal female volunteers and 132 female outpatients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or both. Forty-one (31%) of the patients met criteria for anger attacks compared with four (10%) of th

Anger expression and lipid concentrations.

We used 2 different strategies to examine the relation between anger expression and lipid concentrations in 116 middle-aged men. Using the common analytic method used in the literature, the group crossing approach, we examined whether Anger-In. Anger-Out, and their interaction were related to lipids. Regression analyses revealed that Anger-In and Anger-Out were marginally related to total cholesterol. These associations disappeared after controlling for hostility, anger, and anxiety. Using a new intraindividual difference approach, we determined individuals' relative dominance of Anger-In and

Screening for Anger and Sleep Difficulties.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health screens are designed to detect individuals at risk of psychological disorders. In the military setting of this study, these disorders were post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use. This study extends the literature on deployment-related mental health screening by including measures of sleep difficulties and anger as predictors of postdeployment PTSD and alcohol abuse. Evidence that measures of anger and sleep difficulties contribute incremental validity to the prediction of postdeployment mental health problems, including substance abuse, would be helpf

[The impact of mindfulness meditation on anger].

This study explores the impact of mindfulness meditation on anger. A meditation group (N = 37) attended 5-10 minutes of mindfulness meditation daily for a week. They were assessed with self-report scales measuring three aspects of anger (rumination, arousal, and lengthiness) before, just after, and four weeks after their one-week participation. Their scores were compared to a control group (N = 27), which was assessed at the same intervals as the meditation group. The meditation group was also asked to evaluate their current mood using the Affect Grid before and after each meditation. The resu

Assessing and intervening with anger disorders.

Nurses often find angry patients threatening. In this article, current research will be synthesized to provide guidance to nurses whose specialty area may not be psychiatric nursing. Guidelines for assessing and intervening with angry clients will be provided. Such guidelines are likely to be useful to nurses in every clinical setting, from the emergency room to the rural clinic to the high-tech hospital unit. Nurses will also learn some techniques for managing their own anger at uncooperative or hostile clients.

[Coping with anger and the premenstrual syndrome].

OBJECTIVE: Investigations in recent years confirm the importance of "anger coping-behaviour" for women suffering from different diseases such as migraine, high blood pressure and coronary heart disease. The hypothesis for this investigation was that "anger-in" coping (anger-suppression) is a possible causal factor in the premenstrual syndrome. METHODS: Data analysis was undertaken on 38 patients (average age 32 years) fulfilling the inclusion criteria. The Menstrual Distress Questionnaire (MDQ) was used for measuring the intensity of premenstrual symptoms. As a result of a cluster analysis of

Those who had attempted suicide in the past were found to have higher indirect hostility scores and less of a belief in control by powerful others. The results were examined from the perspective of Seligman's learned helplessness theory and Henry and Short's theory.

The effect of anger on intentionality bias.

More than a decade of research on emotions has demonstrated the role of affect in social judgments. Emotions influence the way individuals make inferences about others' behavior. Building on these previous findings, the present research investigates the effects of anger and sadness on the attribution of intentionality. In Experiment 1, angry, sad, or neutral participants read a series of sentences describing simple actions and had to indicate whether the actions were done intentionally or accidentally. Results showed that anger significantly predicted the proportion of intentional judgment whe

Dispositional vengeance and anger on schadenfreude.

The aim of this study was to construct a model of the elicitation of schadenfreude through vengeance, envy, and trait anger. Japanese undergraduates (239 men, 284 women) completed questionnaires assessing dispositional vengeance, trait anger, and empathy. Then, participants read two scenarios: one about a target person's success and one about his or her misfortune. After reading the first scenario, the participants were asked to rate their envy toward the target person, then their feelings of schadenfreude after the second. A Japanese version of the Vengeance Scale was developed, and its const

Anger and personality in eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to examine how anger, temperament and character profiles differ across subtypes of eating disorders (EDs) in comparison to healthy controls and to analyze the relationship between anger expression, eating attitudes and personality dimensions. METHOD: One hundred and thirty-five outpatients (50 of whom suffered from anorexia nervosa restrictor type [AN-R], 40 from anorexia nervosa binge/purging [AN-BP] and 45 from bulimia nervosa [BN]) and 50 control subjects were recruited and administered State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI), Temperament and Chara

Anger: the hidden part of grief.

Anger, under any circumstances, is difficult to experience and understand. When associated with grief, anger seems startling and somewhat inappropriate. Yet the failure to recognize and the inability to work with angry feelings may compromise and inhibit the necessary grieving process. If not confronted directly, anger emerges in a variety of disguises such as disabling illness, maladaptive behavior, and chronic unhappiness. Using numerous case examples, the authors address the role of anger in the grieving process.
