Lung infections of specific-pathogen-free rats were studied to determine cross-immunity between infections with Pasteurella pneumotropica and Angiostrongylus cantonensis. Rats were found to have differences in mortality due to pneumonic infections with P pneumotropica and A cantonensis and to coinfections of P pneumotropica and A cantonensis. Single infections of P pneumotropica were not dosage-dependent in their lethality for specific-pathogen-free rats. The mortality of coinfection with P pneumotropica and A cantonensis was significantly lower than that of a monoinfection with P pneumotropic

CASE DESCRIPTION: 3 Geoffroy's tamarins (Saguinus geoffroyi) in a zoo in east central Alabama developed neurologic signs shortly after a tamarin kept in the same enclosure was found dead.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Neurologic abnormalities varied among animals and were progressive. One female tamarin with a head tilt, nystagmus, mild ataxia, and paresis of a thoracic limb had gram-positive cocci present in an ear canal with otitis media and interna suspected. Another female with mild ataxia attributed to previous tail amputation developed seizures, and a male tamarin with tail tip trauma also develop

In two cases of ectopic localization of Angiostrongylus costaricensis adult worms and eggs were seen in the liver, causing a granulomatous inflammatory reaction with dense eosinophilic infiltration and necrosis. In the first case, although antibodies for A. costaricensis had been demonstrated, a clinical diagnosis of visceral larva migrans was recorded; however, further examination of a liver biopsy revealed eggs of A. costaricensis. In the second case, severity of the intestinal pathology masked the presence of lesions and an adult A. costaricensis that were discovered in a retrospective stud

Between 1959 and 1976, 34 patients were seen in Hawaii with eosinophilic meningitis. Angiostrongylus cantonensis was recovered from two of these patients. The remaining cases were presumed to be due to this parasite because of clinical and epidemiologic findings. The most likely source of infection for eight patients was ingesting raw terrestrial snails or slugs, and for six patients eating raw or poorly cooked crustaceans. Patients typically presented with severe headache; neck stiffness and fever were usually mild or absent. Paresthesias were noted by most adults. The cerebrospinal fluid (CS

BACKGROUND: Angiostrongylus vasorum is a nematode residing in the heart and pulmonary vessels of dogs and wild carnivores. In Europe the red fox is its reservoir, while only three records from wolves have been published. Angiostrongylus vasorum has a worldwide distribution, and many pieces of evidence demonstrate that it is spreading from endemic areas to new ones. In Italy, A. vasorum was reported with increasing frequency in dogs and foxes in the last decades, and now it is considered endemic throughout the country. Angiostrongylus vasorum can be asymptomatic or cause respiratory and circula

BACKGROUND: The cardiopulmonary nematodes Dirofilaria immitis and Angiostrongylus vasorum are increasingly reported in dogs and are responsible for two diseases with overlapping endemic areas, especially in Europe: dirofilariosis and angiostrongylosis. The reasons for their apparent emergence are unknown, but several factors (e.g. increased disease awareness, better diagnostic tools, climatic changes, seasonal population dynamics and movements of animals) may play a role in the recent rise in reports of infection in the various countries of Europe. The aim of this study was to investigate the

BACKGROUND: Angiostrongylus vasorum is a nematode that primarily infects Canidae. The adult parasites are found in the pulmonary arterial circulation and the right side of the heart. The most common clinical sign is respiratory dysfunction. Bleeding, neurological, ocular, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal disorders are also reported. Skin lesions are very unusual.
HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: This report describes a nematode dermatitis due to A. vasorum infection. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first case of a dog infected with this parasite that initially presented with skin

A 2-year-old female spayed Epagneul-Breton dog was presented with ecchymoses, but an undisturbed general condition. Clinical examination additionally revealed petechia and a haematoma. Travel history included Italy and Denmark. Laboratory abnormalities were moderate thrombocytopenia, prolonged PT, aPTT and TT, and elevated d-dimers. Initial therapy consisted of plasma transfusions, fluids, doxycycline and famotidine administration. Babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, leishmaniosis, dirofilariosis or anaplasmosis could not be confirmed. Abdominal ultrasound was unremarkable, while thoracic radiographs sh

A 7-year-old female intact pug was presented for a six-month history of cough, dyspnea, and exercise intolerance. Treatment with fenbendazole was initiated 3 days before referral based on a positive blood quantitative PCR for Angiostrongylus vasorum (A. vasorum) without improvement of the clinical signs. The dog lived in Belgium with a traveling history to Corsica and Canada. On physical examination, the dog was tachypneic with expiratory dyspnea. Mild non-regenerative anemia, monocytosis, eosinophilia, and basophilia were identified on hematology. Biochemistry revealed hyperproteinemia due to

BACKGROUND: Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a rare zoonotic parasitic illness contracted by consuming raw or semi-raw food contaminated with the third-stage larvae of Angiostrongylus cantonensis, such as freshwater shrimps, fish, snails, frogs, etc. [1]. The parasite can stimulate the host to generate an immune response and cause tissue damage, primarily invading the central nervous system of the human body. However, the liver is relatively infrequently affected and is prone to missed diagnosis and misdiagnosis.
METHODS: Comprehensive laboratory routine examinations, including blood routine, b

Angiostrongylus cantonensis, commonly known as the rat lungworm, causes Eosinophilic meningitis in humans. Our study aimed to investigate the prevalence and distribution of this parasite in rats in Haiti. Rats were trapped at 8 sites, 7 in Artibonite (rural region) and one in an urban area of Port-au-Prince. After euthanasia, hearts and lungs were sampled and preserved in 70% ethanol. Subsequently, the organs were dissected to detect adult worms. Parasite DNA was amplified using PCR targeting either the nematode ITS2 gene for rodent lung tissue or cox1 for isolated worms. Subsequent sequencing

Rat lungworm Angiostrongylus cantonensis is the major infective agent of human eosinophilic meningitis (EM) in the world. The parasite was first noted in China in 1933. However, the public health importance was not realized until several EM outbreaks occurred recent years. Such disease is considered as emerging infectious disease in the People's Republic of China (P.R. China) since the major source of infection is invasive snail species, particularly Pomacea spp. National Institute of Parasitic Diseases (NIPD) initiated a systematic implementation research on this disease since 2003. This report describes a 10-month-old dog with a sudden loss of vision and severe dyspnoea. The ocular examination revealed bilateral panuveitis, lens subluxation, secondary glaucoma, and retinal detachment. In addition, the ocular ultrasound showed in the vitreous body of the right eye, a small doubled-lined foreign body compatible with an intraocular parasite. Radiographs of the thorax revealed an increased opacity with mixed lung pattern (alveolar and bronchial) and thoracic ultrasonography showed several subpleural nodules. The presence of Angiostrongylus vasorum first stage larvae was conf

Cardiopulmonary infections by Angiostrongylus chabaudi affect domestic and wild felids but, due to limited information on the biology of this nematode, its pathogenicity remains unclear. This article describes the histopathological alterations associated with Angiostrongylus infection in a wildcat from Bulgaria, and reviews current literature on this feline angiostrongylid. Nematodes were isolated from lung lavage and faecal samples of a road killed wildcat in Southern Bulgaria. The morphological identification of parasite larvae as A. chabaudi was confirmed by molecular analysis of part of th

After a case of Angiostrongylus vasorum (canine lungworm) was diagnosed in the province of Chieti (Italy) in early 2008, parasitological research was conducted to investigate the presence of the parasite in dogs in the area. A total of 178 dogs, 56 carcasses and 122 stool samples were examined between January and September 2008. The carcasses were examined for the presence of adult parasites in the right ventricle and pulmonary artery, and larval forms in the internal organ and brain tissues. The faeces were inspected for larval form L1 using three diagnostic methods that are currently used to

The nematode Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a rat lungworm, a zoonotic pathogen that causes an emerging infectious disease known as neuroangiostrongyliasis or rat lungworm disease. This study evaluates the efficacy of a vaccine developed for a related species, Angiostrongylus costaricensis, to A. cantonensis in the definitive rat host. Wild-caught rats (Rattus rattus) (n = 28) were mated in captivity to produce uninfected F1 progeny. A total of 43 F1 rats were involved in this trial; 20 non-vaccinated, 21 vaccinated, and two unvaccinated, uninfected. F1 offspring in the vaccinated group were i
