Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are widely used for controlling hypertension. Their use in women who are pregnant is not without risk to the fetus. We describe three infants exposed in utero to ACE inhibitors who had adverse outcomes. These cases, combined with other reports in the literature, suggest strongly that these drugs are fetotoxic. ACE inhibitor fetopathy is characterized by fetal hypotension, anuria-oligohydramnios, growth restriction, pulmonary hypoplasia, renal tubular dysplasia, and hypocalvaria. Although the true frequency of adverse fetal effects has yet to be de

Phytochemical research of the acetate and methanol extracts of the aerial parts (flowers, leaves and stems) of Salvia elegans allowed to obtain seventeen known compounds (1-17): three of them (4, 5, 14), had already been described for this species, while the others (1-3, 6-13, 15-17) are described for the first time for S. elegans. All isolated compounds were characterized using spectroscopic techniques and mass spectrometry and were evaluated in the Angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition model, where the phenolic compounds (13, 14 and 15) had the same inhibitory effect as lisinopril

Angioneurotic oedema is one of rare side effects of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, its incidence is around 0.1-0.2%. Angio-oedema most commonly develops in the first 4 weeks of the treatment, but it can be observed later, after several months or even years. The association between the oedema and the drug intake can be difficult to recognize if the oedema is of delayed type and because the attacks can disappear spontaneously without discontinuation of the drug. The angioneurotic oedema is tend to be worsening during the treatment, and finally the obstruction of the upper respiratory

The introduction of agents that block the renin-angiotensin system has provided major benefit to patients with hypertension, renal diseases, and congestive heart failure. Some of the therapeutic advantages related to the kidney derive from removing angiotensin II at the efferent arteriole. Under some circumstances when afferent blood supply is compromised, particularly beyond a renal arterial stenosis, use of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors can lead to decrements of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and impaired potassium excretion, which clinicians should be prepared to identify

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors represent a major therapeutic breakthrough for treatment of hypertension, congestive heart failure and various chronic renal diseases. They are effective generally well tolerated and safe for most patients. However, acute renal insufficiency or overt renal failure occurs in some patients with underlying critical renal artery stenosis (RAS), hypertensive nephrosclerosis, autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, and chronic congestive heart failure. Diuretic-induced sodium depletion and underlying chronic renal insufficiency

Renal dysfunction and hypertension are closely associated. Hypertension causes approximately 25% of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and develops in virtually every patient with advanced renal insufficiency from any cause. Although normalization of blood pressure can reduce mortality from uremia and ameliorate the progression of renal impairment in patients with established renal insufficiency from hypertension and diabetes, antihypertensive therapy alone is not totally effective in preventing progressive compromise of renal function--especially in blacks and diabetics, who are at high risk for

Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors are potent vasodilators acting by inhibition of production of the vasoconstrictor angiotensin II. In adults, they are used for treatment of systemic hypertension and congestive heart failure and investigated for treatment of primary pulmonary hypertension. In infants and children, saralasin and captopril were found to be useful in treatment of systemic arterial hypertension, especially when associated with high plasma renin activity. Captopril has failed in the treatment of congestive heart failure associated with complex congenital heart diseases and i

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are clearly effective treatment for all stages of hypertension. Since the introduction of captopril in 1981, numerous ACE inhibitors have been synthesized and are under investigation. Their exact antihypertensive mechanism of action remains unclear. Part of their effect may be mediated by vasodilator prostaglandins. Early studies with as much as 1,000 mg a day captopril demonstrated the agent's ability to reduce blood pressure, but only 10 percent of the severely hypertensive patients were controlled with monotherapy. Subsequent studies have demon

Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors are effective therapy in hypertension. They are particularly useful in severe drug resistant or accelerated hypertension, in renal hypertension and in hypertensive heart failure. Although their exact mode of action has not been determined it is a consequence of the inhibition of angiotensin converting enzyme. They offer distinct advantages over conventional drugs in the treatment of high blood pressure particularly as they have no central or autonomic side effects and as a consequence the patients feel well. There is no postural effect on blood pressure

This article examines the evolving understanding of β-blockers (BBs) and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) in the context of anaphylaxis. While once considered relative or absolute contraindications, current evidence shows minimal absolute risk of severe reactions and supports continuation in most patients, particularly when cardiovascular disease is present. For venom and allergen immunotherapies, large studies and guidelines endorse individualized risk-benefit assessment and shared decision-making. Caution remains for patients with unpredictable anaphylaxis, and glucagon may a

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is the chronic medical condition and it affected billions of people worldwide. Natural medicines are the main alternatives to treatment for a majority of people suffering from hypertension. Niazicin-A, Niazimin-A, and Niaziminin-B compounds from Moringa oleifera ethanolic leave extract were reported to have potent antihypertensive activity.
OBJECTIVE: These compounds were targeted with Angiotensin-converting enzyme [ACE] which is one of the main regulatory enzymes of the renin-angiotensin system.
METHODS: Protein-ligand docking of these compounds with [ACE] [both dom

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal adhesions are pathological fibrotic bands developing after mesothelial damage. Transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-beta1) has mitogenic activities for macrophages and fibroblasts. Over-expression of TGF-beta1 has been implicated in the pathogenesis of several fibrotic disorders. Angiotensin II increases the expression of the TGF-beta1 in fibroblasts. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE) on intraperitoneal adhesions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty male Wistar albino rats were divided into two groups. In the

A 105-year-old woman developed pemphigus foliaceus. She had been on fosinopril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE inhibitor) for 4 years. Anti-intercellular cement substance antibodies were positive with titre > 160. She died during admission of an unrelated illness. A 57-year-old man developed pemphigus vulgaris after 11 months treatment with quinapril. At 14 months after developing pemphigus, this man continues on prednisone and azathioprine. We speculate that these are cases of ACE-inhibitor-related pemphigus and we review ACE-inhibitor-related pemphigus.

The possible negative therapeutic interaction between aspirin and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors arose from the conclusions of several experimental studies and retrospective analysis of large scale mortality trials with converting enzyme inhibitors. Some experimental results show inhibition of the vasodilatation of converting enzyme inhibitors, increase in pulmonary pressures, vascular resistances and blood pressure, and degradation of renal function and exercise capacity. However, other studies did not confirm these results. In large scale therapeutic trials, some retrospective anal

Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE) have become an important part in the pharmacotherapy of hypertension, in this indication they were used for the first time in the eighties. Later the indication was extended to heart failure (where they evidently reduce the mortality), acute myocardial infarction (there they prevent cardiac remodelling), and in myocarditis (vasodilatation, effect on spasms and on free oxygen radicals). As to non-cardiological indications the most important indications are nephrological-diabetic and non-diabetic nephropathies. Nowadays already different types of AC

AIM: To review potential problems associated with the use of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors in the treatment of patients with hypertension.
PHYSIOLOGICAL PROBLEMS: ACE inhibitors cause a drop in blood pressure depending on the circulating level of angiotensin II. This may be a problem in patients with severe congestive heart failure, so that it is important to monitor the effect of the ACE inhibitor in this group. Hyperkalaemia can develop in patients with severe renal impairment and potassium plasma levels should be monitored. Renal impairment is another potential problem and
