The effects of acetylcholine analogues, serotonin and catecholamines on ion transport were studied in both the middle and the posterior intestine of Anguilla anguilla, mounted in an Ussing chamber, with the aim of understanding whether these regulators affect different mechanisms in the different tracts. In the middle intestine, acetylcholine analogues and serotonin decreased the serosa negative transepithelial potential and short-circuit current without altering the transepithelial resistance; catecholamines reversed the inhibitory effects of both regulators. Similar opposite effects were pro

The role of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in the control of blood pressure and drinking was investigated in fresh water (FW)- and seawater (SW)-adapted eels, Anguilla anguilla, by comparing the effects of pharmacological manipulation through the use of papaverine (stimulator) and captopril (inhibitor) on the endogenous system. In SW eels basal blood pressure levels were lower (23.3 +/- 0.8 mm Hg) with correspondingly higher basal drinking rates (0.51 +/- 0.07 ml/kg/hr) and plasma AII concentrations (32.89 +/- 4.19 fmol/ml) compared to FW eels (33.8 +/- 1.3 mm Hg, 0.06 +/- 0.02 ml/kg/hr, 9

Subpopulations of fast and slow fibres within the trunk musculature of elvers were examined using morphometric analysis of electron micrographs. Fibre regions were characterised by their histochemical staining characteristics, and individual fibres located using a coordinate mapping system utilising morphological features as reference points. Percentages of fibre volume occupied by mitochondria, myofibrils, sarcoplasmic reticulum (S.R.), and T-system were determined in each of the fibre groups, along a transect from the skin to the vertebral column (fibres 1-14, respectively). The fine structu

The coelom of elvers (Anguilla anguilla L.), eel0, is contenting glycoproteids, but these are not improvable in following stages of development. In peritoneal epithelium of eel0 activity of leucinamino-peptidase is present, but absent in the stage 2a. We can suppose that glycoproteids vanish by enzymatic catabolism and resorption within the peritoneal epithelium.

The different vegetable oils used in canned fish as a filling medium have a preserving effect and contribute to the palatability of the product. In this study, the colour of European eels and the filling medium (sunflower oil, olive oil or spicy olive oil) was measured at different steps of the canning process. The sensorial characteristics of canned eels packed in the different oils were also evaluated. Colour scores (CieLab values) were higher in canned eels packed in sunflower and spicy olive oil than in canned eels packed in olive oil. The changes in colour parameters depended on the type

Exposure to specific metallic compounds can cause severe deleterious modifications in organisms. Fishes are particularly prone to toxic effects from exposure to metallic compounds via their environment. Species that inhabit estuaries or freshwater environments can be chronically affected by persistent exposure to a large number of metallic compounds, particularly those released by industrial activities. In this study, we exposed yellow eels (European eel, Anguilla anguilla) for 28 days to environmentally relevant concentrations of four specific metals; lead (300, 600, and 1,200 μg/l), copper (

Respiratory and circulatory (measured and calculated) variables were obtained at the same time in resting eels, during normoxia and after 1 h exposure to environmental hypoxia (water PO2 of 40 torr). In normoxia, values of respiratory and circulatory variables appeared less than those reported for most other fish. These differences could be partly explained by a lower level of standard metabolism and a greater uptake of O2 through the skin. Hypoxia caused a marked decrease in heart rate (40%), cardiac output (37%), ventral and dorsal arterial blood pressures (22% and 32%), associated with a co

In the aquatic environment, mercury is readily methylated into its most toxic form of methylmercury. In this form, it enters the aquatic food chain and its concentrations increase in subsequent links, which decreases the quality of fish meat and poses risks to consumer health. Concentrations of methylmercury (MeHg) and total mercury (THg) were determined in the muscle tissues of 64 eel specimens measuring from 59 to 95 cm in length as functions of specimen size and weight. Risks posed to consumers by eel from different length classes were also assessed. The mean concentration of THg in all of

The present short-term in situ study was carried out in a freshwater-wetland--Pateira de Fermentelos--considered an enlargement of Cértima River, in the centre of Portugal. This ecosystem is an important fishing and recreation place, receiving effluents from different origins namely, electroplating industrial effluents containing heavy metals, domestic wastes, as well as pesticides and fertilizers resulting from agriculture activities. The aim of the present research work was to monitor the effects induced by the contaminants present in Pateira de Fermentelos water, using Anguilla anguilla L.

The European eel is a critically endangered species that cannot be reproduced in captivity yet. Artificial maturation of female European eels can be achieved via a laborious and expensive procedure, including weekly injections with pituitary extracts for up to 6 months. The success rate is highly variable and a minimally invasive method for early selection of responsive eels would prevent the unnecessary and lengthy treatment of non-responding individuals. Since sexual maturation of European eels is accompanied by morphological changes of the pectoral fin, we examined whether fin could be used

The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is a critically endangered species. Red anus syndrome (RAS) is known to be associated with parasitic infections of the eel, particularly with Anguillicola crassus, but the full range of causative pathogenic organisms has not been systematically investigated. Here we examined the infective organisms and histopathological and ultrastructural features of seventy eels with RAS. In total, nine different pathogens were detected in association with RAS: Pseudomonas aeruginosa were present in twelve specimens (17%), the metacercaria of Euclinostromum heterostomum i

The way in which muscles power steady swimming depends on a number of factors, including fibre type and recruitment, muscle strain, stimulation pattern and intensity, and the intrinsic mechanical properties of the muscle fibres. For a number of undulatory swimming fish species, in vivo studies have shown that muscles at different positions along the body are stimulated during different phases of the strain cycle. Moreover, some intrinsic contractile properties of the muscles have been found to vary according to their position along the body. We report the first results on the mechanical proper

In the neuro-intermediate lobe (NIL) of the eel, Anguilla anguilla, a specific formaldehyde-induced fluorescence, indicating a catecholamine (CA) innervation, has been demonstrated in the neural lobe processes. Microspectrofluorimetric analyses and pharmacological treatments indicate noradrenaline or dopamine or both to be responsible for the fluorescence. The fluorescence in the NIL has displayed a definite tendency toward variation during the adaptation to a white and to a black background. The highest amounts of fluorescence were generally found in animals adapted to a black background, esp

Understanding the migratory cycle of the European eel is crucial for implementing effective conservation measures. The reasons why some glass eels settle in lower estuaries rather than migrating upriver remain unclear. This study aims to identify metabolomic signatures that distinguish active (migrant) from inactive (non-migrant) glass eels. Using a combination of target and non-target screening (NTS) approaches, the metabolite profile of glass eels was studied, and a PLS-DA classification model was applied to find differences between behavioural phenotypes. This model highlighted methionine,

We examined the effect of temperature in European silver eels during their maturation induced by injections of carp pituitary extract on endocrine parameters: pituitary fshβ and lhβ expression, plasma 17β-estradiol (E2) and vitellogenin, estrogen receptor 1 (esr1), and vitellogenin 2 (vtg2) expression in liver. A variable thermal regime (T10) that increased from 10° to 14° and 17°C was compared with a constant 20°C regime (T20) during 12 weeks. T10 caused a faster development until week 8, higher fshβ, lhβ, esr1 expression, and higher E2 levels. The results strongly suggest that T10 is inducin

Obstacles encountered by downstream migrating European eels during their spawning migration are among the primary causes of their population decline. River regulation and hydrotechnical infrastructure play a crucial role in this process. Fish reaching migration barriers often interrupt their journey, while those passing through hydroelectric turbines frequently suffer fatal injuries. Using acoustic telemetry, the downstream migration of silver eels from a large lake complex in northern Poland was tracked. Along their route, the fish encountered small hydropower plant (SHP) equipped with Kaplan

Lipids, particularly fatty acids (FAs), are major sources of energy and nutrients in aquatic ecosystems and play key roles during vertebrate development. The European eel Anguilla anguilla goes through major biochemical and physiological changes throughout its lifecycle as it inhabits sea- (SW), and/or brackish- (BW) and/or freshwater (FW) habitats. With the ultimate goal being to understand the reasons for eels adopting a certain life history strategy (FW or SW residency vs. 'habitat shifting'), we explored differences in lipid content and FA composition of muscle, liver and eyes from eels co

Farmed female eels were fed two experimental diets with similar proximate composition but different n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels. Both diets had similar levels of arachidonic acid (ARA), while levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in one diet were approximately 4.5 and 2.6 times higher compared to the other diet, respectively. After the feeding period, each diet group was divided into two and each half received one of two hormonal treatments using salmon pituitary extract (SPE) for 13 weeks: i) a constant hormone dose of 18.75mg SPE/kg initial bod

An inverse relation exists between the maturation stage at the start of the oceanic reproductive migration and the migration distance to the spawning grounds for the various eel species. The European eel Anguilla anguilla migrates up to 5-6000 km and leaves in a previtellogenic state. The shortfinned eel A. australis migrates 2-4000 km and leaves in an early vitellogenic state. In this study, we compared the early pubertal events in European silver eels with those in silver shortfinned eels to gain insights into the initiation of vitellogenesis. Immediately after being caught, yellow and silve

Heavy metals and organic pollutants were investigated in the Adour estuary (South West France) and associated wetlands using the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) as a bioindicator. Heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Zn, Pb, and Ag) were measured in soft tissue of yellow eels. Mercury (total Hg and MeHg) and organochlorinated compounds (7 PCBs, 11 OCPs) were analysed in muscle. Concentrations in muscle were in agreement with moderately contaminated environments in Europe and were below the norms fixed for eel consumption for heavy metals and OCPs. Analyses of liver showed a higher pressure of Ag and Zn in t
