Memory template comparison processes in anhedonia and dysthymia.

Anhedonic subjects, potentially at risk for psychopathology because of a deficient ability to experience pleasure, have demonstrated a large N200 component in the event-related brain potential (ERP). The present experiment attempted to determine the psychological significance of this finding in light of Näätänen's (1990) distinction between N2a and N2b subcomponents. Anhedonics were contrasted with controls and dysthymics, an at-risk group reporting depression. Across groups, N2a was larger when a tone mismatched a longer run of preceding identical tones. Thus, an involuntary mismatch process

Evaluation of the Pleasure Scale in the assessment of anhedonia in children.

The Pleasure Scale for Children, a measure developed to assess anhedonia in school-age children, was evaluated. Psychometric properties and concurrent validity of the scale were evaluated with 232 child psychiatric inpatient children (ages 6-13) and their parents. Based on prior research with adults, predictions were made that children with a diagnosis of major depression would evince greater anhedonia on the scale and that anhedonic children (low Pleasure Scale scores) would show a negative attributional style in relation to rewarding experiences. The results indicated that the Pleasure Scale

Anhedonia influences threat avoidance and relief: A conceptual replication.

Active threat avoidance is an adaptive coping strategy but can evolve into maladaptive behavior patterns when it is disproportionate to an actual threat. While excessive and persistent avoidance, as often seen in anxiety-related disorders, have been investigated extensively, it is presently unclear under what circumstances insufficient avoidance might occur in the presence of a genuine threat. We hypothesized that anhedonia, the reduced ability to experience pleasure, might undermine the relief experience after successful threat avoidance and thus reduce future active avoidance responses. Sex moderates the effect of anhedonia on parietal alpha asymmetry.

Anhedonia, a transdiagnostic symptom present in many neuropsychiatric disorders, differs in males and females. Parietal EEG alpha asymmetry is associated with reduced arousal and low positive emotionality, and is, therefore, a promising neurophysiologic biomarker of anhedonia. To date, however, no prior studies have determined whether this measure captures sex differences in anhedonic expression. This preliminary study (N = 36) investigated whether anhedonia severity is associated with EEG resting-state parietal alpha asymmetry in adults and whether sex moderates this relationship. Results sho

Inflammation as a Pathophysiologic Pathway to Anhedonia: Mechanisms and Therapeutic Implications.

Anhedonia, characterized by a lack of motivation, interest, or ability to experience pleasure, is a prominent symptom of depression and other psychiatric disorders and has been associated with poor response to standard therapies. One pathophysiologic pathway receiving increased attention for its potential role in anhedonia is inflammation and its effects on the brain. Exogenous administration of inflammatory stimuli to humans and laboratory animals has reliably been found to affect neurotransmitters and neurocircuits involved in reward processing, including the ventral striatum and ventromedia

Anhedonia in eating disorders: A meta-analysis and systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Anhedonia, or loss of pleasure, is related to deficits in reward processing across a variety of psychiatric disorders. In light of research suggesting abnormal reward processing in eating disorders (EDs), the study of anhedonia in EDs may yield important insights into the role of reward in eating pathology. This meta-analysis and review aimed to provide both a quantitative and qualitative synthesis of the existing literature on this topic. METHOD: We conducted this research (or these meta-analyses) according to PRISMA guidelines. We searched four databases for both peer-reviewed an

The Efficacy of Vortioxetine on Anhedonia in Patients With Major Depressive Disorder.

Background: Anhedonia is a common, persistent, and disabling phenomenon in treated adults with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Hitherto, relatively few antidepressant agents have been evaluated with respect to their effect on anhedonia in MDD. Methods: This is a post-hoc analysis of a primary study that sought to evaluate the sensitivity to change of the THINC-integrated tool (THINC-it) in MDD (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03053362). Adults meeting DSM-5 criteria for MDD with at least moderate depressive symptom severity [i.e., Montgomery Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) total scor

Translational Assessments of Reward and Anhedonia: A Tribute to Athina Markou.

Loss of pleasure (clinically referred to as anhedonia), impairments in other reward-related processes such as reward learning, motivation, and reward valuation, and blunted affect characterize several mood and other psychiatric disorders. Despite the availability of many therapeutic options for these disorders, reward-related impairments remain challenging to treat and often persist despite alleviation of other symptoms. Lack of animal models of reward-related impairments and affect that have high construct and predictive validity is a key obstacle to developing novel treatments. This review h

Pavlovian reward prediction and receipt in schizophrenia: relationship to anhedonia.

Reward processing abnormalities have been implicated in the pathophysiology of negative symptoms such as anhedonia and avolition in schizophrenia. However, studies examining neural responses to reward anticipation and receipt have largely relied on instrumental tasks, which may confound reward processing abnormalities with deficits in response selection and execution. 25 chronic, medicated outpatients with schizophrenia and 20 healthy controls underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging using a pavlovian reward prediction paradigm with no response requirements. Subjects passively viewed cu

Social anhedonia as a predictor of the development of schizophrenia-spectrum disorders.

College undergraduates (n = 34) identified by deviant scores (at least 1.96 SD above the mean) on the Revised Social Anhedonia (SocAnh) Scale (M. Eckblad, L. J. Chapman, J. P. Chapman, & M. Mishlove, 1982) were compared with control participants (n = 139) at an initial assessment and at a 10-year follow-up evaluation. Twenty-four percent of the SocAnh group were diagnosed with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders at the follow-up compared with only 1% of the control group, despite the fact that there had been no such difference between the groups at the initial assessment 10 years earlier. The Soc

Establishing content validity of the Dimensional Anhedonia Rating Scale.

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to evaluate content validity of the Dimensional Anhedonia Rating Scale (DARS), a patient-reported outcome measure, in adults with anhedonia in the context of major depressive disorder (MDD). To accomplish this, a conceptual model including the symptoms and impacts of anhedonia in the context of MDD was developed and refined through a targeted literature review, clinician interviews (N = 6), and participant interviews (N = 20). RESULTS: Using the final conceptual model, an item mapping exercise was conducted for the DARS, demonstrating that it provided suita

Quetiapine prevents anhedonia induced by acute or chronic stress.

The role of atypical antipsychotics as add-on treatments and as primary mood stabilizers in different phases of bipolar disorder is an important current research area. Although in bipolar patients the main therapeutic indication of quetiapine (QTP) is the management of acute mania, several observations suggest that this agent may exert antidepressant as well as antimanic effects. However, in our knowledge, there are no preclinical studies supporting this hypothesis. Thus, the main goal of the present work was to evaluate the putative antidepressant effect of QTP (0.4, 2.0, or 10 mg/kg/day), in

Anhedonia in schizophrenia and psychosis spectrum disorders: An integrative review.

Anhedonia and related motivation and pleasure (MAP) deficits are prevalent in schizophrenia and psychosis spectrum disorders, are generally persistent over time and show limited treatment response. These symptoms are of clinical importance as they contribute to the profound social impairment and reduced quality of life in schizophrenia and psychosis spectrum disorders. This selective narrative review examines methods for assessing anhedonia and MAP deficits followed by a summary of current research on factors that contribute to these symptoms with a focus on identifying continued gaps in our u

Beyond the emotion paradox: Avenues to understanding anhedonia in schizophrenia.

In people with schizophrenia, anhedonia is commonly conceptualized using the notion of an "emotion paradox." This "emotion paradox" refers to relatively preserved positive affect during immediate exposure to pleasant stimuli despite reduced pleasure on non-current self-reports and lower engagement in pleasurable activities. Across levels of analysis, case-control studies have converged in suggesting impairments in representational and evaluative processes involved in anticipating, maintaining, and translating reward into motivated behavior, rather than a uniform incapacity to experience pleasu

[Anhedonia as a Transdiagnostic Phenomenon: Neurobiological, Clinical, and Therapeutic Approaches].

Anhedonia, classically defined as the inability to experience pleasure, was introduced in 1897 by the French philosopher and psychologist Théodule Armand Ribot. Although this term is still used, it has undergone conceptual modifications because the dichotomy of the original description is insufficient to capture the complexity of its components (Pérez Rincón, 2014). The hedonic experience is a dynamic and cyclical process that begins with a state with an individual reference range, known as hedonic tone, which determines each person’s capacity to experience pleasure and happiness. Currently, a

From anxiety to depression: A longitudinal investigation into the role of anhedonia.

Anxiety and depression are highly comorbid with each other, warranting a need to better understand transdiagnostic mechanisms. Anhedonia has been hypothesized as a transdiagnostic mechanism but has often been investigated as a unidimensional factor. Thus, the current study examined how anticipatory and consummatory anhedonia, including how they interact with anxiety, predict next-week depression. Participants (N = 101) completed weekly assessments of anxiety, depression, and anhedonia. Using an iterative approach, we constructed four models to investigate independent and interactive effects of

Examining working and episodic memory in young adults with anhedonia.

Depression is associated with impairments in memory processes. Evidence suggests that poorer recognition of positive information and quicker disengagement with positive information from working memory in depressed versus nondepressed individuals. The working memory deficits are speculated to be downstream effects of a taxed working memory due to rumination processes that impair reward learning leading to anhedonia symptoms. Downstream effects are also hypothesized for episodic memory with impairments particularly for positive information due to dopamine dysregulation from anhedonia affecting m

The impact of rumination and anhedonia on daily social and occupational function.

INTRODUCTION: Rumination (repetitive negative thinking; RNT) and anhedonia are hallmark features of depression and other psychiatric disorders known for their association with executive functioning. However, limited work has directly evaluated associations between these indices and their potential contribution to impairments in social and occupational function. This study investigated cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between RNT and anhedonia with functional outcomes at 6- and 12-months among individuals with elevated depression or anxiety symptoms. METHOD: Participants (N = 92,

Evaluating Anhedonia as a risk factor in suicidality: A meta-analysis.

Previous studies have evaluated the relationship between anhedonia and suicidality; however, to our knowledge, there has been no quantitative synthesis evaluating the foregoing association to date. Herein, this meta-analysis aims to provide a quantitative synthesis of the extant literature reporting on the association between levels of anhedonia across all dimensions (e.g., anticipatory, consummatory) amongst individuals endorsing suicidality. Online databases (i.e., PubMed, PsycINFO, Google Scholar) were searched from inception to 13 June 2022. Studies which assessed an aspect of suicidality

Abnormal Anhedonia as a Potential Endophenotype in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is often accompanied by cognitive, particularly executive function, impairments. Recently, anhedonia has emerged as an apparently important symptom of OCD reflecting altered emotion regulation. These two aspects are often comorbid in OCD. However, little is known about whether anhedonia may be a trait marker for OCD. METHODS: To verify the role of executive function and evaluate the role of anhedonia in OCD and its relationship with OCD symptoms, we recruited 60 OCD patients, 30 unaffected first-degree relatives (FDRs), and 60 healthy controls (
